The images look stiff, rough, and incredibly awkward. Polished, they are not. Online in Japan, people are saying this is a “massive breakdown” (大崩壊 or dai houkai) of the anime’s images. Crap images are not uncommon in anime, but this is perhaps a tad disappointing because Dragon Ball Super is a big, new show. The bar is a bit higher, I guess. (It’s supposed to be super, right?!) Also, this was supposed to be the episode’s big showdown…

Thing annoying me is I’ve already seen the Battle of Gods movie and the series is just retelling it at the moment. And yeah the animation wasn’t exactly the best but its seems to be doing what I’ve seen other animes do is put in less detail to animate smoother movement. Almost rotoscoping.
I saw an ep when I was in Japan a week ago and now I know why I kept feeling like I had seen it before, even though Ive hardly watched DBZ before. I did watch the BoG movie so that explains it.
I actually thought the animation quality was pretty good; was even telling my brother this (along with “I swear I saw this story/plot before on DBZ”).

I gave up part way through episode one, it’s the worst DB ever – it makes GT seem interesting by comparison. And apparently it only gets worse.
What’s wrong with it? So far it’s been fleshing out Battle of the Gods story arc.
This is exactly what is wrong, besides the fact that this is more a cartoon then an anime, they come up with a new “season” or “arc” and what do we get? An idiotic arc about an enemy, that we already know…
Imagine seeing the Freezer movie, before the Namek Arc happened… It would have been completely boring, you would have known who dies when, and stuff like that…
Seriously, what possessed them to FIRST show the ending of the arc in the movie, and THEN show the story after that? Isn’t the other way the right way? You tell a story in the anime, and for some additional fun, people can watch a movie? That’s how everyone always did it, even DBZ, many many times… Not ONCE did the movies spoiler, what happens in the Anime, it was always some kind of… “what if” situation, where you saw the past, or something that “could” have happened at some point in the past.
For my part, i still hunger for more DBZ, really really bad, but this is not it, just like the game. I have the strong feeling that both the game and this bad anime (which seriously makes GT look interresting, like someone else said) are just a cash grab, to get some easy money from the fans. Would really love to see a new DBZ arc, and i literally hate the people that make THIS one, because just like GT, this will be so bad, that later, even the creators will admit that it was bad, and just (hopefully) continue the story as if this never happened.
Also, sucks that we have to wait another 10 years for a new arc now, because this one will fail, they stop making db again, and then it takes forever until they try to make a good show again…
This is what happens when they put idiots in charge. They only see “oh, dragonball doesn’t sell, canceled!” They don’t understand that it doesn’t sell, because the content creators don’t care about the product, and just want to make SOMETHING that they can sell to dumb kids. Try putting people with a brain in charge, you could be making billions off of old DBZ fans that are STILL waiting for a REAL continuation of the series…
Episode 1? Where the characters were being re-introduced in silly ways? How was that the worst ever?? Dragon Ball (hell everything Akira Toriyama has ever done) has always been silly, if you were expecting non-stop action…. well… Maybe you don’t remember Dragon Ball all that well?
It didn’t contradict estabilished plot multiple times within the first episode anyway so I can’t see how it could possibly be worse than GT.
I was expecting lots of padding, but I was hoping it wouldn’t be duller than a Kardashian. It was the worst DB filler I had seen.
Huh? How can it be padding when it’s the first few episodes, it’s reintroduction to the characters and showing they have a normal life. Padding would be between story arcs or things added with no relevance to the arc during the arc.
You’ll often fond people saying these things without know what they mean or their actual relevance to narrative. Kind of like when people try to use “plot holes” as a film criticism.

If you want to skip to the action real quick go take a look at the very awesomely fan made Dragon Ball Absalon. In fact I would say Dragon Ball Super should take a few cues from Absalon.

It was all during the fight scene/s, so all of these shots blurred past pretty quick.
Not really trying to defend it, some of that does look really crap, just saying it’s not quite as obvious while watching it as this article full of still-shots makes it seem.

Eh, they are most likely “in-betweens” from rapid action scenes. They are meant to literally not be seen but serve as a quick, smooth transition between more detailed stills. Every anime does this and you always see threads like this of anal people playing anime frame by frame to catch the really hilarious ones. This ones have nothing on some of the most infamously bad ones.
Yeah this isn’t exactly first Gundam or Transformers haha.
My guess is all the animation was rushed to make schedule, then they’re going back to re-do all the animation for the DVD release. Syndication and reruns don’t really exist in Japan, so they probably cheaped out on the hope that nobody would notice until the DVD can get ready.

Welcome to shounen anime as they are. Fights take a lot of time and effort to animate and they only have a week for each episode. You want it to look nicer with less obvious inbetween frames? wait for the DVD/Bluray release.
It sucks but this is super common in Dragonball. From the Cell saga onwards the animation took a very noticeable nosedive, with the best artists being used for the most important stuff; rehashed stuff (like the BOG battle in Super episodes) got the shitty artists. Which is weird because the animation already exists.
This stuff is what made DBZ Kai so jarring for me. You’d have all the original DBZ animation, and then the new stuff created to join the new cuts together was pretty much exactly what we’re seeing above. So it’d go from DBZ, to this, then back again – was super obvious how bad the new animation was.
Sayian Saga, Frieza Saga, Android Saga (?), Cell Saga and Buu Saga is my childhood all wrapped up with a bow
If you look at the still of Vegeta you see his right hand is all wrong too. thumb is in the wrong place. (look closely at the fingers)
Once you actually watch other animes besides Dragon Ball, you soon realise that it is one of the poorer ones out there.

The whole show is garbage, I watched the first episode, and i honestly felt bad afterwards, like… seeing your favorite hero, on the toilet, bad…
Goku is such a… well, sorry, i would say idiot, but that is what he always was and what i love him for… there is no way of saying this nice, but he is a complete retard, and a faggot.
WHAT asshole lets his like… 3 year old kid, handle heavy machinery? Why does he need to rescue him? and WHY does just nothing happen, AT ALL? When the tractor fell down, shouldn’t it have been completely destroyed? Just HOW much “you have to be careful with your powers, this is not a cartoon, when you punch a wall with your power, people will DIE, because the wall will turn into projectiles that are deadly over a distance of 500 miles…” They spent whole episodes showing how hard it is for Goku and Gohan, not to destroy their house, when they are back from their ultra awesome training. And now, AAAAALL that is gone… Goku can just stop a falling tractor with 1 finger, and the tractor doesnt even have a dent… AAAAAALL those beautiful details that were established in DBZ… gone… Just punch a wall as super saiyan, it’s a cartoon wall! Ofc it will resist your punch, even though you can pulverize planets with your fists…

Because i watched the former ones, and tried the later ones, and they are pretty much ALL utter garbage… ALL if you compare them to DBZ.
The only things that came close to DBZ were the first arcs of Naruto and Bleach, but both of them turned COMPLETELY stupid at one point.
Bleach has MASSIVE timeline problems (Good guy fights bad guy, suddenly good guy is at home, completely new story for 200 episodes, and all of a sudden, he is back with the bad guy from 200 episodes ago, but instead of losing, he now is winning, because he learned tons of stuff in the last 200 episodes… which represent like a YEAR, but all happen in 2 seconds, while they take a breather… JUST WTF???)
And Naruto is just worse then everything people say about Lost.
They make up 1 million rules, 1 million plots and 1 million foreshadows, and at one point, just NONE of that matters anymore. Ninjas don’t use Chakra anymore, they can just do whatever they want with stupid excuses. The whole “capturing the 9 pokemons” thing, just disappeared. At some point, the bad guys, suddenly, for no real reason, don’t need the last 2 pokemon anymore, they can just use something that the pokemon touched… Then WHY on earth did you spend 800 episodes trying to get them? That was the main plot of the series, and suddenly… it’s gone… Imagine watching any anime you like, and the rules just… disappear…
Every human has a death note, people have hundreds of devil fruit powers, you can carry 500 lv9000 pokemon at the same time without any badges, Oolong turns into a Super Swine to defeat Cell… yea, sounds horribe, doesn’t it? Something that is essential to the series, and they just destroy it. Imagine in NGE, everything just suddenly blows up with the reason that “god” managed to reach the first angel, because god is everywhere! Well, ok, but then why the hell did i watch 10 episodes of this? Shouldn’t the world have exploded before episode 1?
Just like that… Should Akatsuki not have an EXTREMELY easy time to find 9 things that were touched by the jin… yin… chin… big pokemon? YES, and they should have destroyed the world LONG before Naruto even decided to not hurt the village with his pranks anymore… NONE of the plot should ever have happened, THAT is how big of an error this is… The big pokemon are not really hidden, finding 9 things that they touched should take you a few days, considering how fast Akatsuki can travel through the whole world, if they are not walking and talking for 10 episodes for plot reasons…

Imagine there was no beginning in the saiyan saga, and then Vegeta shows up and is like “Hi, im ur new enemy, gief dragonbalz plx!” Yea… we need at least a BIT of backstory. That’s why everyone thinks that Radditz is stupid, because he was like… the first guy that NEEDED to die, so we actually care. Because Raditz was Saiyan AND Gokus brother, Goku cared, Vegeta and Nappa cared, EVERYONE cared, and stuff became interesting… Don’t go all “nowerdays anime” on us, and show us 10 episodes of filler, how that idiot grew up, right before he dies, so we at least feel SOMETHING for him.
Just like in One Piece RIGHT now… 10 Episodes about Law’s past… Oh boy, i REALLY wonder what “semi main” character is going to die… 5 min later Mingo cuts his arm off… CALLED IT! Just hope there is not 5 episodes of crying about him, sucks enough that one of the last good characters is gone, because all OP characters are being turned into jokes by the manga drawer…
