Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture: it’s a first person exploration game. Sorta like Gone Home or Dear Esther, which makes sense because it’s made by the creators of Dear Esther.
I had forgotten this game even existed. But it’s coming out like next goddamn week. It looks great.
What’s the premise? It’s in the title really: everyone has gone… to the rapture presumably. The year is 1984, everyone is gone. Something weird has happened. MYSTERY. It describes itself as an attempt at innovative non-linear story-telling. I’m assuming that means its a more expansive, more ambitious version of Dear Esther — which was such an unforgettable experience.
I am a little worried by the trailer though. Mainly because the dialogue seems a little more… trashy TV? Compared to Dear Esther, which featured some of the best writing I’ve ever seen in a video game, I worry that Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture might suffer. That being said, I love the premise and it looks visually spectacular.
What I don’t want: a weird slasher spook story. What I do want: a unique story that surprises and engages me.
Here’s hoping we get the latter.
Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture is PS4 exclusive. Interesting considering the fact Dear Esther was only released on PC. It hits the PlayStation Store on August 11.
