Did you know that you can beat the original Legend of Zelda without using a sword? No, you did not know that, because it’s not true. But you can beat almost all of it — up until the very last battle.
During this week’s Summer Games Done Quick speedrunning marathon, runner jkoper showed off how a careful gamer can skip the sword and beat all of Zelda‘s dungeons with bombs, the wand, the candle, and all the other items you’ll gradually pick up as you play. The only thing you can’t do without a sword is beat Ganon (or, as the NES translation calls him, Gannon), but jkoper makes the rest look easy.
Maybe it’s not that dangerous to go alone!
