The single player portion of Treyarch’s next Call of Duty game has proven too much for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the studio announced today.
Treyarch wasn’t building the last-generation versions of Black Ops 3, though it was overseeing them. Beenox and Mercenary Technology had been assigned the unenviable task of making the game work on old technology.
Just months before the game is due to arrive, however, they have pulled the plug on those versions getting the campaign mode.
“The ambitious scope of the 1-4 player coop Campaign design of the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions could not be faithfully recreated on old generation hardware,” the company said in a statement.
The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions won’t have the weapon paint shop or eSports tools, either. They will, however, get multiplayer and the zombie-filled Shadows of Evil.
With single player gone, they’re also dropping the price to $US49.99.

Well PC is getting the campaign and don’t they usually give PC the shit end of the stick. So why not port that over.
its not about shafting last gen owner, the PS3/360’s hardware isnt physically capable of handling the campaign…
If this isn’t a sign devs should ditch the old gen I dunno what is. Yea I get there is huge user base on old gen but If the shit cant run on it time to move on.
Meh, leave it to the market I say.
It’s not the developers who should move on, if they can make good money releasing a multiplayer only game for $49US then I say good for them.
If I was a COD fan who didn’t yet own a new-gen console (it’s been nearly 2 years now) then this would certainly have me upgrading.
That’s not how game development works…
Isn’t this still the same old shitty engine? Hence they can certainly do it, they just don’t want to.
still the same old engine, which is still constantly being updated… definitely long overdue for a complete new engerdue fine rewrite, but to say it is the same engine they were using a decade ago would be blasphemy. to explain myself a bit better, the same engine that powered half life 2 is the same yet ridiculously modified engine that ran Titanfall.
Majority of people just play the multiplayer anyway 😛
yeah i have never touched a campaign since World at War. couldnt get into the modern/futuristic campaigns, yet ive had MW2/MW3/BO/BO2/GHOSTS
The campaign for the original MW was pretty great (it was one of the first to really nail that cinematic set-piece that they’ve been rehashing in every game since).
World at War was awesome. One of my faves
Wish they would sell it in chunks so you can buy what you want from the games. So if you want only SP, you can buy that. Same with MP and Zombies.
So you’re saying that the whole thing should be DLC?
More like a menu.
I work restaurants. Im going to start calling side dishes and drinks “Optional Nutritional DLC” 😛
COD has jetpacks now? I remember when you played as a Russian and your mates would shoot you if you stepped backwards. How times have changed..
Don’t fret, CoD fans! The campaign will likely be released at a future date as DLC for the nominal price of USD $69.99…
