In a world filled with uncertainty we are able to cling to few sure things. One rock we can grasp to pull us through our days is the expectation that the more advanced clothing and armour that we obtain for our video game heroes will look more impressive than their starter gear. If only this was true in the new Mad Max game.
Perhaps there are those among you who will disagree and who will say that our hero’s outerwear evolution, achieved through the amassing of virtual scrap, is an aesthetic triumph equal to the game’s stunning display of beautiful big skies. If so, we just disagree.
Here is a beautiful sky in Mad Max:
And here is Mad Max’s jacket journey, from minimal Max jacket to max* Max jacket:
What has happened here?
Top-level Mad Max here looks like Generic Video Game Bad Guy #15. I dare say his mid-level jacket was the peak. Maybe the development studio Avalanche can patch a cooler top-level jacket in. They just added better vehicle-rolling to the game in a patch earlier this week. This has got to be the next most important thing.
I’m sorry if you too are shaken by these developments. I know what you’re thinking: Can we no longer expect uber-level gear in a video game to look cool? What next? Staring at a virtual sun in a racing games and not getting a lens flare effect? A Final Fantasy without a fire spell? Mario jumping higher than Luigi?
At least my pretty high-level car in the game is looking great:
Mad Max remains a divisive game for the Kotaku staff. But at the very least I hope we can all find common ground in critiquing Mad Max’s clothes.
*UPDATE – 12:40pm: A couple of readers have informed me that completion of the game unlocks a new jacket that does indeed look cooler.

Mad Max’s top level jacket should’ve looked like a black leather jacket and his getup from part 1 when he goes on his rampage in his v8 interceptor…
Yeah finishing the main story unlocks his original jacket and shotgun which makes him look like a sweet cool dude. And also the Interceptor gets unlocked. Too bad theres nothing much left to do at that point 🙁
I’d argue he looks more like, “Practical combat gear guy.” than anything… And I am always pleasantly surprised when games don’t take armour design to moronic lengths.
But hey, when the apocalypse hits everyone just feel free to run around in whatever looks ‘cool’ and leave all the functional body armour for me.
Finish the game first.
you guys know there is another one?? you should finish the game first, you get the original jacket from the first movie
Similar problem different game = I always found the costumes in the assassins creed series extreamly samey (ie, same costume with slight variations in colour and pattern). Black flag is a good example with the vast majority of Kenway’s outfits being reskins and only a couple that fit in with the pirate theme. Sort of sad in comparison to games like GTA5 where you can run around in a dress if you so choose, but hey, any customisation is better then no customisation.
…first of All how about moving the *update info on top of this pointless article?….as you are beeing proven wrong by one of your readers which makes this whole jacket complaint inrelevant….secondly: do you really think Max Jacket look is more important over his immunity to fire from burning cars, fireplaces, wall torches ? and that his jumping sucks big time, that convoys going round in circles rather then from A to B, and that you can’t use sniper rifle outside your car?…..jacket issue? Really?
TBH if someone could use that sniper rifle outside of the car i would be incredibly impressed, it looks like a hydraulic tank buster rifle.
I’ve actually been burnt from cars and fireplaces while playing the game so not sure what that is about.
Also Irrelevant*
That’s the thing with fire. We walk straight into flames of a freshly blown car and….nothing. Max can stand there for hours or collect scrap. Fire place / BBQ in camps…No Problem – doesn’t seams to bother Max either. But Fire from pipes torches ( boss fights ) or car’s flame-throwers or even car wreckages (not destroyed by us) DO hurt Max….There were 3 patches since the release and non of them fixed this. I’ve notice it way before game’s launch when Devs were live-streaming. I was asking on Game’s facebook and twitter, on YT …no answer…
and TBH…just finished the games (100+ hours – 100% completion) ..Got the iconic jacket and Max double barrel shotgun. Jacket is very cool and gives even more protection – Double barrel is also showing to do more damage but in reality it is ….shit – sadly. When you try to shoot car’s back tank it takes like 2 or 3 shells to blow it up – first you have to shoot off some metal scrap around the tank. So I’m back to 4-barrel shotgun again. I hope DLC and Patches are on the way.
Do you understand how illegible your writing is and how it affects your credibility? Especially in the critique of a written piece.
English is not my first language – deal with it!
Jumping sux?
Have you even seen the movies?
Didn’t you notice he’s wearing a leg brace?
Yes! Jumping sux.
I’ve seen the movies – all of them and YES ..I know his leg was hurt and he’s wearing a leg brace – but I’m talking about scenarios where he’s not able to jump over a bloody stone, low fence…a small obstacle – what happen with a simple climbing over objects like that ? he can climb up in places marked in yellow, he can run, roll over, quickly evade etc…
