Here's a modern day video game mystery we haven't been able to solve: Why are the download files for new Assassin's Creed Syndicate outfits so enormous?

A new free download that gives players a single Steampunk outfit for Syndicate's twin protagonist Evie Frye is an 820MB download on Xbox One. The PS4 lists it at 1GB.

Here's her outfit:

A $7.35 downloadable Steampunk Pack that gives players a new outfit for Jacob Frye as well as five pieces of gear like the ones pictured right below this paragraph is listed at 2.1GB on PS4, 1.5GB on Xbox One.

The entirety of Assassin's Creed Syndicate weighs in at 47GB on PS4.

Neat as these outfits and pieces of gear are, it's hard to believe they contain that much data.

Sadly, we don't know the reason for the size, as Ubisoft PR has not responded to a request for comment. Nor did the official Assassin's Creed Twitter feed when I Tweeted at it yesterday.

Some fans online have speculated that the downloads contain patches for the game, but these are optional downloads and it's highly unlikely that any essential graphical or performance patches for the game would be sequestered to discretionary DLC. Perhaps AC Syndicate needed a big patch just to support the addition of the new costumes and that's what we're being asked to download here.

This is an odd one, but fans will likely accept Assassin's Creed idiosyncrasies such as this one rather than the kind fans were getting with last year's main AC.

My only hope is it has the same stats as the aegis armour, hate the look of that one but has the best stats

I feel you on that one, I am running a steel grey military outfit with the royal cloak for aesthetic purposes on Evie even though I rarely use the gun. Thankfully Maximum Dracula looks great, is great and has a great name. The Shao Jun kit isn't too bad especially with the boost to throwing knives but for me it doesn't fit in with the fiction.

on a complete tangent, I just 100% synced the game about 10 minutes ago

Does the 100% sync require full perks as well? So far I think I'm pretty close to 100% so far until 75%

Nope, none needed for 100%. The trophy only needs 10 perks as well, not all of them. Helix glitches and a handful of optional objectives were the more frustrating aspects of the 100%

$7, 2GB download then you have to buy it with in game money. WTFudge!

my theory is that they up the size for no reason so that they can justify the cost. people now know what MB and GB are more so than they use to. so they make it big, charge more money, and you feel better!

Why are the download files for new Assassin’s Creed Syndicate outfits so enormous?

Cause everything AC is full of crap!

When Destiny and Borderlands can get 18gb patches, you don't need to make bloated "free" updates to include game patches. Sleeping Dogs was very guilty of this on the 360, but that was due to patch size limitations.

I'd be keen to know if there is anything else to these updates.

well the answer for the female character is obvious.. according to ubisoft females are so much harder to animate it borders on near impossible so therefore their clothes are the same

The outfits you can get through UPlay (Aveline and the other one) didn't seem to take up anywhere near that much data, might be worth a look at how they weigh up.

How do they do the patching on consoles? Is it simply downloading the entire file or do they have a proper patching ability using file differences? If its the former then it becomes understandable if one file contains all animations\skins.

I would guess that it would be changing all the cutscenes so that they are wearing the new outfits in them. That could account for the large space.
