Got my hands on an older PPC Mac on the weekend. And it was actually nice to play the Mac version of Myst and the Journeyman Project (hybrid disks for the win!).
But I am interested if there were any other good adventure or shooter games on the Mac back in the day besides those I’ve listed and the Marathon Trilogy. Any one here know of any other games I should track down?
Marathon was probably the only Mac game worthy of noting from back in those days. There really wasn’t a great selection of games for Mac’s back in those days. Still not so great even today when compared to pc, but they’ve come a long way for sure!
I used to teach graphic design and back in the late 90’s we would play Marathon (after class of course) over the network on PPC Macs — it was brilliant! Before then (I’m bloody old!) it was Dark Castle on original mid-80’s b+w Macs!
Rats. Oh well as least I have some of the better made games to play.
I’ve also got this obscure game on the way called Alida. It’s Myst like but takes place on the one island with a giant working guitar built on it.
Don’t know if I’ll like but I’m gonna give it a shot just because the concept is so weird.
Like RPGs at all? Realmz sucked up shittons of my time as a Mac gamer back in the day. It wasn’t AAA or anything (mid-90s Shareware) but I loved it.
EDIT: if you were playing with others over a network in addition to Marthon there was Spectre and Bolo that were very popular. Alsoone of Bungie’s earliest games, Minotaur. Speaking of Bungie, Pathways Into Darkness is also worth a look back at. That game needs a modern survival horror remake badly.
Good morning everyone!
7 days for Rise of The Tomb Raider!! 🙂
Too many games being released right now, I’m going to hold out for the PC version next year!
Luckily for me, I await the PS4 version 🙂
Same
Same here. After my experience with the XBone I’ve simply given up as it took the main feature consoles had over PCs away; pick up and play.
I’m just trying to understand how the Xbone took away pick up and play. I’ve been using it for almost a year now and it feels pretty easy to use.
I have never played on a different console though.
I regret not playing more board games at PAX. I still played quite a few. Now for a good old fashioned post-PAX coma while my puppy mups.
Anything new or particularly interesting? We’re always looking for new games. Though I didn’t get down to PAX, I got a couple of games of Carcassone and one round of Civilization in over the weekend.
I fell in love with Between Two Cities simply because it’s a mix between 7 Wonders and Suburbia where you build two cities with your neighbours based on tiles you draft. It’s clever and the scoring mechanic, where you score the lowest of your two cities, makes for interesting decisions. Seems like one that would be great with a few plays.
Mysterium was a disappointment because it was the wrong environment to play in and I completely cocked up when it came to learning and teaching the rules (being quite hungry did not help at all).
Codenames is fantastic. Clever. Quick. Easy to teach. Easy to learn. Tricky to play but not in a bad way. It’s just a game that invites whoever is playing it to have fun. Super happy that I bought it to PAX.
Got to play some upcoming games as well. Burger Up is on Kickstarter right now, already funded, and I think it’s a very neat filler game. One of those reliable games like Love Letter you can just pull out.
Skyward (Kickstarter coming early next year) is Fact or Fiction the tableau builder. If you played Magic when that card was relevant, you should be super excited about that idea. If that means nothing to you, don’t worry, I’ll be writing about it later.
Between Two Cities sounds good and I keep on hearing good things about Codenames (I just don’t think I’d like it). I think I can continue to confuse my wife’s family with xmas gift suggestions – board games and weber accessories.
I player The builders (Maybe The builders; Middle ages as full title) which was quite good as a small compact game. We will probably end up buying that as a filler game.
The other one we played was Burglar Bros, which I am now kicking myself for not backing on kickstarter when I was ummming and ahhhing over it. It is a heist game and plays really well. Each person plays a character with an ability and you move through a building floor by floor, cracking safes and avoiding the guard. So much fun.
I am so tired after PAX.
Did everyone enjoy pax meat?
My legs are so sore and I’m still exhausted -_-
I’m sorry I couldn’t make it, my buddies wedding rehearsal turned it a long night 🙁
All good man, it’s a shame I couldn’t bump into you at PAX, but there’s always next time.
That sucks. D=
Worst meat ever. People were too busy having fun to play board games.
Sorry.
I just hope it wasn’t too uncomfortable in the bar since it was quite warm/humid that night.
Also felt good to sing again, even when I put on the Sebastian impersonation 🙂
The cinema was air conditioned, so you just had to move.
I know, I was there 😛
Oh right. Sorry.
I just hope it wasn’t too uncomfortable since… well, y’know.
No :p
But D= we should have streamed it on Twitch or something…
Scree! Hi, Scree. Colon pee, pal. Also, I’ve not never, not even once, watched a Twitch.
Well, that’s not 100% true, I tried Twitch plays Pokemon, much to my disappointment. & also, I have also watched them post-live on YouTube, stuff p ke speedruns, actually only speedruns.
How are you?
Sore and still having panic attacks after naps. The worst sensation ever
What do you panic about?
I have the opposite problem, I’m too relaxed & sleep too much. I bet it sounds good, but I find it hard to fit everything I want into my shorter days.
Balance would be nice.
No idea, I just wake up in a panic.
My throat is a trainwreck.
Had an absolute blast though.
Even if I did cock up the lyrics of Bohemian Rhapsody (sorry @f4ction !).
I’m just a sore toy from a sore fambily
The start and end were awesome, it was just that the middle sucked
Thanks Scree, you guys did an amazing job.
For a minute, I was like “oh crap, what happened? And then I remembered that you had to take Tiglet home. I’m not functioning properly
It is post pax. None of us are functioning properly
Yeah, I still think it’s crap that you couldn’t have your pram.
Yeah, Sat was rough as we didn’t even have the carrier. Oh well we will know for next year, although Tiglet will probably need it a lot less
I was telling Mum about it. Especially since I saw others with their prams.
Have you seen the turbo lover gief fish video?
No, i saw the bohemian one though
There’s some clips of it on my Twitter.
I will check it out later. I gotta go to the shops first, even though all I really wanna do is sleep.
Yes!
Thanks to you and @tech_knight yes we did.
Enjoyed PAX, enjoyed putting faces to names, and had lots of fun. And the meat on Saturday night was great! Thanks again for organisational duties.
Once again, I am accepting donations to scree@givememoney.com
Not a real email address. =PMy throat still hurts and my feet still hurt and oh my god my legs still hurt I didn’t even know those parts of your calves even got used for walking.
It was pretty great.
Time to get in on this TAY thing – looks much more entertaining than working on a Monday morning. Considering putting in for some leave next week, since I’m owed plenty of it and well an truely on the hype train for Fallout.
You new? Did you sign the guest book?
There’s a guestbook?
Yes it’s called the Oar of Thorns. You sign it with your bottom!
Eh. We lost the Oar a while back. Now we just enforce a smart casual dress code. Except when we don’t.
@spadge
Hello new blood! … I mean friend!
I’ve gotten into woodwork recently, I could probably create some kind of replacement if you don’t mind it effectively being a custom cut plank with spiky things hammered into it.
Are you an orphaned Eskimo daemons, for as the Prophet @effluvium-boy says:
Spread the good word.
Morning TAY!
I sent part of my weekend in hospital hooked up to a couple of drips for over 12 hours trying to fix me. Turns out I have Hyponatremia/Hypovolemia (sp?)
My symptoms were a mix of both, so they’re not 100% sure, but at least I don’t feel like I’m 80yrs old when I wake up in the morning now. Still feeling a little light headed today, so my boss agreed that taking another day of annual leave to give it the best chance to go away is best, so no work today again, but if things keep progressing the way they have, I shall be back on deck tomorrow! w00t!
Was great to see all your piccies and tweets from PAX over the weekend! Given I couldn’t be there, it was nice to be able to keep up with all the happenings and fun stuff 🙂
Hopefully you’re not all too ratshit after so much hype!
That’s some serious stuff, hope you feel better soon mate.
While it is serious, hopefully it wont turn out to be anything more serious than that. I don’t really want to end up having to have an operation if I can avoid it!
Hope you feel better soon dude, also the fact ypu had a shit tonne of hydralite before going makes you more man than me, I tried that stuff when I had gastro and it was nasty, I thibk it was the orange one I had.
lol my colleague at work said the same thing! He said the orange was disgusting, but better if it is cold. Room temperature is apparently very unpleasant! I went with the purple one, and thankfully drank it chilled from the get-go, and it wasn’t too bad. Not the kind of thing I want to drink every day, but at least it worked 🙂
I had both the drink and the icypole thing, I preferred the icypole, I also preferred a slow death to taking it so ya know thats a thing
yeah it’s not the most pleasant thing in the world, but after feeling the way I did for close to 2 weeks straight, I probably would have ingested anything if it was likely to make me better!
Hugs.
So what do those words mean?
Well, hypovolemia is a decreased volume of blood plasma, It’s usually associated with a decrease in salt, and can cause a wide array of symptoms like confusion, lethargy and such.
Hyponatremia is similar, in that it’s low sodium concentration in the blood, but it’s generally more associated with dehydration, where as the volemia isn’t. Hyponatremia doesn’t generally cause confusion or screw with the mind, which is why they can’t rule out one or the other, but at least they are treated in similar ways in terms of normalizing the body.
Hopefully further tests will reveal the real cause, but keeping fingers crossed it was just bad timing that I got the runs when I was already a little under hydrated, as that should mean my kidneys are ok!
Dr jimu prescribes KFC chips with extra salt & a bottle of evian
Suggestion noted! Though thanks to @ontargett I now have cheese and bacon chicken schnitzel on the brain… evil.. evil man!!! 😉
I think you got hypovolaemia and hyponatraemia backwards. Hypovolaemia is usually associated with dehydration…or bleeding.
And hyponatraemia is associated with confusion, coma and seizures depending on the severity and rapidity…
haha thanks for the clarification doc! 🙂 I was probably still a little out of it when they told me all the details.
There’s only one thing to discuss. 3 days at PAX!
Started off by accidentally taking a wrong turn and ending up 10 minutes late to the first Halo: Reach tournament. Really disappointed. Came back at 2 for the MCC tournament, which was Halo 3. Man, 343i really screwed up the networking. They could only get 4 consoles to work at a time, so we’re moving 4 people through 5 minute games to the total of 64 players. That took 3 hours…
I won the first few games and was worried about the next. Because my opponent was doing MLG strats during his first game I thought I had my work cut out for me. So we start our 1v1 game and I get the first kill. Manage to sneak up on him for the second kill. Got the third. Noticed he wouldn’t be able to catch up within 2 minutes and jumped into a ghost, managing to kill him on top of a building.
Suddenly I hear the spectators behind me shouting about ragequitting. So I’m goofing along and pretending I had no chance and was gonna ragequit. Then the event organiser comes along and tells me to end the game. Confused I look around and can’t find my opponent. Discovering that the spectators were shouting about him ragequitting and leaving in a huff!
After that I went and bugged Mark at the panel for dealing with internet rage. Never knew he had such a strong accent.
Then I went into the freeplay area and played the campaign of Halo 5.
Second day I turned up for the second Halo: Reach tournament. Went pretty ok, but one of the players was an MLG player, so it was unfair to everyone. The final was boring, too since his opponent wanted to practice and explore the map before the finale, lost and the MLG player was awarded the medal.
Tried to get into the Halo 5 tournament but that was overbooked. Which surprised me. So instead I signed up to the Nidhogg tournament. Never played the game but I at least managed to win my first game.
Then I went and got some books signed at Roosterteeth. Meaning I didn’t have to carry my books around anymore and kill my shoulders.
Went into classic gaming and played some Halo 2. Just like last year I forgot how heavy the autoaim in that game is. Still don’t know why people praise it as the best (although that might be the reason).
Then I finished off the Halo 5 campaign. Also showed someone Halo 5 who had been away from the franchise for a while. His reactions were always confusion over the changes.
Final day I turn up for the last Halo tournament. It was supposed to be Halo 4 in the MCC, but because of Friday it was changed to Halo: Reach (just like last year!). I had so much fun in this tournament. Got to the end but lost in a 3 FFA where the opponent kept picking up the kills. Still had a lot of fun though.
I also went to the booth that had a Halo 5 tournament and qualified in the top 16 kills list. Came back at 5 for the tournament and ended up coming 4th overall.
Other stuff I did was going to find Yarnyman and took a picture with him. I played Dark Souls 3 (the aesthetic seems closer to Bloodborne), tried the Rainbow Six demo (they’re really asking a lot for this game) but that was pretty much it.
Overall I had an amazing time.
PAX 2015: Halo Edition
7 days, 16 hours and 2 minutes!
Yeah! Call of Duty!
I’m just wondering how a Brotherhood of Steel themed CoD game would go…
I’d not want a call of duty style game but an Arma 3 mod would go really nicely
After playing a bunch of Fallout and XCOM (waiting for their respective sequals) and a short detour into Fallout Shelter, it got me thinking about an XCOM-style game placing the player as an overseer. You’d construct base facilities, arrange work within the vault (and assign dwellers tasks, or to missions within or outside) and collect items from the wasteland – all similar to XCOM. Additionally, you may have to deal with oddities of a Vault-Tec experiment (or be one of those boring “control” vaults), internal or external factions and eventually secure the area around the vault, perhaps locate a GECK…
Hi TAY, kinda sad I didn’t get to hang out with you guys this weekend but I really enjoyed Saturday at PAX.
@blackdahlianz and @trikeabout escorted me about the place checking out all the Indie games. I never ended up making back on Saturday afternoon, We roamed around at about 1.30pm to try and find other TAYbies in the Boardgames room but in the end I couldn’t find anyone that looked like Freeze, Transient, DC or Techie so I ended up watching people play Rainbow Six Siege and Assassins Creed Syndicate, Rainbow Six looks really really good I think.
Can anyone tell me what was in the Fallout exhibit? I was told that it wasn’t worth the wait but it looked cool from the outside lol.
Did you use the trademarked TAY mating call? tis the only way to find TAYbies out in the wild.
Fallout exhibit:
http://www.kotaku.com.au/2015/10/dont-line-up-for-the-fallout-4-booth-at-pax-this-weekend/
Thank you! 😀
Fallout would have been good if you hadn’t seen anything yet, but apparently it was all content that had been shown elsewhere so was online already.
Good to catch up! 🙂
Morning all, I hope you all enjoyed your PAXing.
My weekend included making an awesome Vegan cake.
http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/32003/mexican+chocolate+cake+vegan
I did a different top though – Coconut milk and chocolate Glaze, much easier!
Also We played our first game of Pandemic Legacy – We lost due to chaining outbreaks!
Almost finished assassins London, liking it a lot.
How is everyone?
Freya was on the fence about Pandemic Legacy, right up until she saw the box at PAX. Not sure how we’re going to get things going but going will get done.
I’m just waiting for us to win a couple of games for the good stuff to happen, but as is we have 5 rioting countries already
Yo, have you been to the “secret” area in AssLondon yet?
So cool.
No I haven’t. hmmmm I will need to look for that tonight. any hints?
Eastern end of The Thames, there should be a marker on the map if it’s unlocked. I don’t know if it comes up as a requirement or anything later, but I noticed it when I was in Sequence 8
Howdy all!
Sitting at the airport waiting for my flight back home. Kinda bummed I need to work today because I’m still feeling pretty dang tired!
Pax was a tonne of fun! Kudos to @tech_knight and @scree for organising the PAX meat this year, it was great.
Spent most of my time hanging around the indies game area. Played a few that were interesting and will check them out in the future. Also got to play some AAA games:
Dark Souls 3 – it is just so god damn good. Basically more Bloodborne-ish movement and combat but with Dark Souls setting and armour/weapons/etc…
Total War(hammer) – I’ve never played a total war game so this was interesting. I learnt (the hard way) that troop placement is pretty dang important.
Xenoblade Chronicles X – The demo wasn’t really anything surprising. I was hoping I got to fly around as a giant transforming ship but you just got to run around as the (uggo) main character and kill things. Combats pretty much the same as it was in Xenoblade Chronicles but improved (give info like where you are standing in regards to the enemy).
Also spent a bit of money on some tabletop games. I bought: Love Letter, Exploding Kittens and Boss Monster 2.
Also, shoutout to @gorzilla for driving me to and from PAX and organising accomodation.
I really doubt that place can be topped for PAX meats, even I wasn’t expecting a full on theatre.
$1k+ well spent for me
Yeah, it was pretty great. Atleast if someone else does a PAX meat next year they know where to book. =P
Indeed it has everything we need, a bar and a karaoke theatre that are separate but a very short trip between them, since the TAYbies prefer one or the other, and they could enjoy one while not interfering with the other at all, it was quite amazing.
How does Boss Monster 2 look compared to the original?
Wait, that was there? Where abouts in the booth? I didn’t see it at all. Hardly any games of interest at the Nintendo booth actually, pretty much just Fast Racing Neo. Which I wasn’t too keen on.
It was hiden in the back area. behind the happy home designer area.
Oh, you mean in with Project Zero? Only saw that when walking past, didn’t think there’d be anything else to go in there that would warrant further inspection.
Still probably wouldn’t have bothered waiting in line to get there though 😛
The line was terrible, it never move. Luckily I was walking pass it 10mins before PAX closed and it was empty. The guy overseeing it was cool and let me play for the 10 mins.
Morning errbody hows every little thing?
My weekend so far has been filled with more ups and downs then a poorly constructed rollercoaster.
Friday night was date night, we went to Eastland as its half reopened from its renovations and is looking pretty schmick everything is differernt but you can tell where the old part of the shops were and where the new begins. But I digress we went to Balsamic for dinner, had a burger that was alright then went to go see Paranormal Activity which if you like horror comedies go see it because thats what the series is now more comedy than horror.
Saturday went with Cathryn’s family to go check out a new house in Endeavor Hills, turned out the property was already under contract and they wouldn’t know if it would be back on the market or not till mid week which they failed to mention until I talked to him about it so that pissed off alot of the people there when they found out because they saw it as a waste of their time. Afterwards we went and picked up Cathryns dad’s new car, he ended up buying an old FJ40 because he loves them so saturday night was spent cleaning and fixing it up and finding any problems with it.
Sunday we did pretty much nothing it was a lazy day where we just relaxed watched the walking dead, watched american horror story, went for a walk and just geberally bummed around all day.
Anywho a monday morning question
When do you prefer to have a public holiday/long weekend day? Friday off or Monday off?
Where I am currently working, Friday.
Friday or Monday?
Por que no los dos?
Bada ba dada ba ba ba da badadadididada
Sounds like one hell of a weekend!
To answer your question, I think it depends a lot on when it actually happens in the year, but generally speaking, I’d prefer Monday off to Friday I’d say. Ideally though, Tuesday would be best, cos that’s when all the dickheads seem to come out of to play :\
Monday. Saturday is normally management meetings so I’m more likely to work through on a Friday or get day off/day on/day off if it’s friday
Sup all? I had a pretty okay weekend. Watched Mad Max Fury Road Saturday night, it was okay, didn’t think it was as good as the original Mad Max, but was still better than Beyond Thunderdome.
Sunday I ended up in West End in Brisbane for a BBQ with some mates, one whom is up from Tassie, was great to catch up with her & the rest. I also met an Australian Shepherd, lovely dogs! Also went to Ikea, god that place is awful to get through on a weekend Q_Q
I also feel like I have a hangover, despite not drinking at all, blah.
Sober hangovers are the blurst
Man, they so are. I think it’s actually from the soft drink I had yesterday, not a huge consumer of it normally. Unless it’s the Bunaaberg ones lol.
Was it coke or one of the other caffeinated ones. Drink too much of those always gives me a headache the next day. The other thing can just be if you are out in the sun at the bbq all day you just dehydrate. The plus side is if you just smash a litre of water first thing you can normally get over them pretty quickly
It was actually schweppes.. I try and avoid coke, find it way too sweet for me. yet i’ll gladly drink shit like Mother, Monster, Red Bull or V heh.
We were in the shade & it wasn’t hot. I just think it was either the drinks or the toxic perfumes I encountered when we were at Ikea. Old ladies & their perfume, about as bad as teenage boys with Lynx body spray lol.
PAX write-up will occur when I get back to Perth – at airport at the moment.
Short of it is: nerdpartment kicked ass, TAYbies are fucking awesome, board games are rad, and there’s a wacky flailing inflatable tube men fighting game.
Hi!
I’m new to Kotaku in the sense this is my first post! I’ve been reading articles for years but finally got the courage to join the community with a profile I guess.
I just finished Mad Max on PS4, quite enjoyable yet those land mine missions were tedious :/
Looking forward to Battlefront, Need for Speed and Seige in December!
How’s people’s mornings been?
Excited for Walking Dead this week?
Welcome! Don’t forget to sign the guest book.
Mad Max is a fun game which I gave up on early on and really should get back into.
I too am looking forward to all of those games more so Siege and Need for Speed however I don’t know if they will get much playtime between ESO and FO4
Also highly excited for the walking dead even though after reading thr comics im really annoyed about the whole show haha
Ah sweet! Thanks man, how would one go about signing the guest book?
Or you pulling my leg? 😉
Ah yeah? How is ESO?
FO4 should be great too!
Yeah I am up to date with the comics so I’m a bit frustrated by the show at some parts
but still enjoying it for what it’s worth.
Fear the Walking Dead is pretty great though
The guestbook is currently down for maintenance, your lucky you didn’t have to sign the old guestbook AKA the oar of thorns, that was a doozy.
ESO is alroght playing with a few mates, frankly if I wasn’t I probably wouldn’t play it, it gets monotonous fast.
Agreed, also that new episode
I’m not a fan of flashback episodes because to me they are too jarring but this one I didn’t mind. Really looking forward to the direction they take it, however if they don’t have jesus in it I will be pretty pissed offHaven’t finished watching Fear the walking dead yet but it is a slow burn show.
Ah nice, looking forward to it then!
Yeah I can understand that, I play FF14: Realm Reborn and that’s with mates, not often I play that by myself.
That new episode though, I did really like it, Morgan did get annoying with ‘kill me’ all the time but I get what he was going through so was justifiable in the end you could say haha You reckon Glenn is still alive and they’ll keep his death for Negan, that was a pretty iconic land mark with the comics I reckon.Yeah plenty of time for Fear the Walking Dead 😉
Honestly my girlfriend asked the same thing but I think that was the way of killing him off because that scene with Negan would never get past the tv execs just like rick losing an arm or Carl losing half his face but fingers crossed im wrongyeah my mate thinks the same. Never get onto tv with a caved skull in by Lucille. Meryl did lose his hand though so it may happen to Rick, you never know 😉So my weekend was pretty great, even if I didn’t go to PAX. Spent Saturday watching sport and playing Guitar Hero Live. Stayed up until 5 am Sunday morning, which was a mistake. Of course the reason for that was the Rugby World Cup final, which was a good game despite the Wallabies loss.
Sunday I went to church, then hung out with friends. Had Hungry Jacks new Cheese and Bacon Chicken Schnitzel, which was actually pretty decent. Then we went to a park and went for a walk and played cricket. After that, I went home and chilled and watched Chappie. That was an interesting movie and I regret choosing to watch Focus instead of it when I had my free movie voucher to use.
10/10, would do again, apart from staying up until 5. Never again (at least until the next time).
YOU!!!! WHY YOU DO DIS?!!?! NOW ALL I WANT IS A CHEESE AND BACON CHICKEN SCHNITZEL!!! ARRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!! SCHNITHEAD! 😉
In a bid to play games other than Destiny in the leadup to Fallout 4, I started a game of Hacknet over the weekend. So far it’s pretty much exactly like Uplink only easier, which is just what I was looking for. I’ll try and spend some more time with it this week.
Also played Toybox Turbos which I picked up in the Codemasters steam sale a couple of weeks ago and as described, it’s pretty much Micro Machines without the authorised branding. I feel like a big part of the appeal is the “street” or “muscle” cars so It’s slightly disappointing that I have to play through races as a taxi or a bulldozer to earn the coins to unlock those cars, but all in all it’s a lot of fun. I’ll probably try and finish all the races at least once just to get my $2 worth.
At some point I need to make a firm decision on whether I’m going to paly the Tales from Monkey Island, Back to the future and Wallace and Gromit games that are sitting in my library. They’ve been sitting there unfinished for so long since I bought some adventure game bundle years ago that they’re actually kind of pissing me off.
Would anyone recommend them?
Oh those games are….well…..ummm…in my library unplayed
Yeah, I don’t know how or when I got them, probably from a humble bundle or something, but they’re sitting there, installed, and I never find the time to play them. Apparently they’re good but don’t stand up to more recent episodic adventures like Walking Dead, Wolf Among Us, etc. so maybe I should give them a miss.
Oh, I should really play the Sam & Max ones though…
My sister liked BttF. The guy they got to do Marty sounds uncannily like Michael J Fox. It’s almost creepy.
Jealous of people having fun at PAX, but did some OK stuff. Went for a bike ride out to Parramatta and back along the river and made it up some longish hills so I was quite happy about that. Saturday afternoon I did skeleton make-up for my daughter’s halloween outfit, which turned out pretty good. Trundled around the local area in a PVC gorilla mask (so so hot!) and then went to a halloween party and met some cool people.
Sunday we ended up going to a professional portrait place because I had a voucher. I didn’t realise that portrait photography could be so unbelievably expensive. Talking about $1200 for a framed 16×20 inch photo, not including the photo session. Oh well.
Finished Tales From The Borderlands last night, which was pretty cool. Also finished book nine of the WoT series and am now into book 10. I aim to finish the series by Christmas!
I vacuumed & mopped my entire house before being forced to attend a car show.
#PAX North Other
I also played Divinity Original Sin & watched 3 eps of Twin Peaks.
Non-PAX weekend post:
Friday night, played some Civilization: Beyond Earth with @rize.
Saturday, played some Rock Band 4.
Saturday night, watched “Back in Time” on Netflix. Then played some Warhammer: Vermintide with @rize.
Sunday, played some Vermintide with @rize.
Sunday night, played some Vermintide with @rize.
Civ: BE – Rising Tide adds some cool stuff to the game. I like the way the affinity system works now but there’s still a lot of the game that feels like a step back from Civ V and its expansions.
Rock Band 4 is Rock Band. Which is great. Freestyle solos are a good idea but can ruin a song as it can sound very out of place. The fact they’ve made/are making most of the old DLC compatible is great. I’ve already got a game that has all the one disc songs plus another 200 or so from DLC I bought over the years. Looking forward to them making the rest available over the coming months.
Vermintide is a cool guy. The fact that it embraces the fact it’s a Left 4 Dead clone/fancy mod is great. But fuck a lot of the public players who don’t seem to realise it’s a team game. Also the addition of a loot system is pretty great too. It has a good risk/reward component, but you can get screwed over by it.
You bought RB4?
So when are we having a Rock Band night at yours?
I’m free whenever.
It’s on the cards. I’m waiting for the legacy adapter to arrive so I can use the Rock Band Beatles gear I have lying around.
You can’t just use the PS3 dongles? Because I have heaps of them lying around.
I would’ve loved to have gotten the PS4 version, but had to get the Xbone because all the DLC/old games I have were on the 360.
Ah dang.
Sweet, well just let me know when I can come round and get you a noise complaint.
I have to agree that there are far too many lone wolves among the public players. It’s not too bad on the lower difficulties but hard and above demands good teamwork.
Do you have a favourite level? I’m enjoy Waterfront probably the most as it’s quick but also pretty challenging.
I know which level I hate… Wheat and Chaff.
Fuck that level so, so much. I can’t remember the name of the mission, but I really enjoyed the one where you have to hold out in the town and defend the wells. It was simple, but effective.
I know so many people who despise that level. The openness of the area really screws people over with the Gunners and Runners having clear line of sight almost everywhere. And yet, Wells is pretty much the same but is far, far better in that regard.
Wait, random players in public games are being dicks?? Oh wait, it’s the OPPOSITE of that when I should be surprised…
Is Vermintide worth getting for single player or is it one of those “Yeah we made bots but didn’t bother making AI for them” kind of deals?
The bots are okay at times but generally terrible. It is a multiplayer game and there isn’t really any single player at all.
Yeah, I joined a game of vermintide and 1 guy was doing all the work. When Igor knocked down proceeded to help me I complained that he had to get me up and set up barrels all at the same time while the other 2 Sat in a corner just looking at us. Then I got kicked for that. It was dumb, untill I played win friends and we actually worked together and had strategies and just plain good communication in general as well.
WHAT?! where were my Vermintide invites?!
I misread that as Vegemite.
That too. Skaven are the secret ingredient!
Also: Melbourne TAYbies, now that the excitement of PAX is over, it is time to plan for the glory and excitement of meating me. 😛
@beavwa @budgieishere @chuloopa @coldcamv @crazyguy1990 @f4ction @greenius @mad_danny @pixel_the_ferret_viking @scree @smurfydog @tech_knight @tigerion @tofu @trikeabout @zetrox2k Anyone else I may have missed.
I have made an executive decision, in that I think that Saturday the 14th seems to be the better option for the meat. So, I am asking for suggestions of places we can go for dinner, and which cinemas would be the best option. Or if you don’t want to see Spectre, other options for activities after dinner.
Also, if you can’t make Saturday night, but are free Friday night, let me know, as I have no plans for the Friday night, and would like to hang out. Thanks.
Friday night will work best for me to hang out, would love to meet you.
Cool. Not sure what we’ll do, but there’s bound to be something to do, even if it’s just wandering the streets. Certainly more interesting than Launceston.
Dinner will be perfect for me, we’ll figure out where that’ll be a bit later on.
I think I have a thing that weekend. But an actual thing with stuff, not just a thing thing to avoid this. I am the best at planning.
Should be free on the Friday, if you want to wander down south melbourne way I can always duck out for a coffee and a chat if I’m at work. or a drink if it is after work. See how it goes.
Cool, I understand that not everyone is available. Life happens. Friday drinks/dinner will be good.
you work in south melbourne to? neat
Too? Does that mean you do as well?
I’m just off Clarendon St behind the town hall. If you are close feel free to drop a message if you feel like grabbing some lunch or a coffee
yarp. I’m across from the markets on cecil st. If you’re ever walking past and see a motorbike out the front on the sidewalk, it’s probably mine
I might have been free Saturday, but I think there’s a high likelihood of family stuff overlapping – I’ll see how things go over the course of the week regarding my availability
@beavwa and I are free on the Saturday night but the Friday is the Pokemon concert.
Yeah, was already aware of that. A friend of mine from Tassie is going to that as well.
Nice! Now I just have to try and convince @beavwa to take me with him.
I’m not sure at this stage as Mum has to go into Hospital on Thursday to get the nodules in her goiter. I’m not sure if I’ll be needed on Saturday, I should be able to let you know Friday. Sorry for the late notice.
Thanks for shout-out. Get back into Melbourne on Saturday morning so may well be able to come out Sat night! Will see how we pull up…
Put me down as a maybe for both nights ill let you know if anything comes up beforehand but will try to make it either the friday for dinner or saturday for the movie
welp, the 14th is my birthday, so I’ve got nothing planned. I’m in, just tell me where to meat.
I think I have D&D on the 14th but I’ll let you know (if you remind me closer to the day)
Come back Fishgief, the world needs you nore than ever right now
*Scaley Spinning Pile-Driver*
‘Cause he’s our Turbo Lover.
…did you see my plane leaving at pretty much exactly that time, or what?
Pax write up: soon. Straight into 3yr old parenting.
Very short write up: you are all awesome, I’m broke now, playing board games was my highlight of it all, I’ll never karaoke again, can somebody tag batguy and tell him I’ve converted on Master of Orion, the escalation of the Streetpass offensive greeting with Freeze ended with an anxiety meltdown on my end and finally my 3DS SD card corrupted itself and I lost everything.
All in all really good. 10/10 would PAX again.
Tall man hugs <3
Pinging @batguy
It was lovely meeting you!
Thanks for being the first Tasmanian at Pax meat
Such an awesome weekend.
Had today off booked so we get a post-PAX ‘weekend’ (thanks to melbourne cup) to just lie around in a bit of a daze.
Guesstimate that I had at least 80 Pokémon battles over the weekend. Could have gone more but I ran out of challengers mid-Sunday.
Batboy had so much fun battling you and the other gym leaders. Thanks for being awesome 🙂
So there was a prolonged power outage in my town yesterday arvo. Cut to today, I’m currently up to 102 emails from the fallout of all our shit breaking and I may just call in sick tomorrow.
When your IT department demands funding to replace old, out of warranty and failing hardware, this is why you just do it.
Want an IT enforcer? I know networking, logical argument and intimidation
Argh. I can’t believe the entire weekend went by and I wasn’t about to find any time at all to go to PAX. Wasted a 3 day pass. Looking forward to seeing what gets in my way next year. I’ll be living within a 10 minute walk of the Exhibition Centre so it’ll have to be big.
Man, that sucks.
Dayum! That must sting! But I’m sure you had a very good reason why you didn’t go.
Wow, something rough must have happened. Hope you get to relax soon.
Nope. Just had a few personal commitments and some work that could only be done during very specific windows. The really annoying part is that I’m stuck at work now tired from the weekend and bored out of my mind with nothing to do but wait for a courier to pick up. The second PAX was over my schedule went right back to normal.
That is incredibly shit. I know @gorzilla wants to thank you though
Thank you 1000 times for letting me use your pass.
No problem. Happy to see it put to good use.
My Weekend in Melbourne: An Ongoing Tale Nearing the End.
Got into Melbourne on Thursday bummed around a bit. Found a bar open outside in an alley. Beavwa Twitter stalked me and dropped by. Convinced me to pokemangs during PAX. Parted ways and caught with with Blaghs Freeze and Cracks for lunch. We had a plate of meat. So much meat. Parted ways while they went to check in. Bar 2. Was eh. Headed down to PAX to grab my pass. Ran into guy I went to highschool with. Bar 3. Left to go check out what was going to be Bar 1. Bar 4 was awesome. Meat up with a whole bunch of TAYbies for dinner at bar 5. Dinner was at cool Chinese place. Met B-ob for first time. Parted ways after dinner cause I was still on my crawl. Bar 6 awesome. Bar 7 was nothing amazing but I could be a regular. Good staff. Bar 8. $49 whiskey please. Bar 9. Oh god if I have one more drink in gonna be #rekt for PAX. Don’t remember how got home. Was lost for a bit.
Friday hung over. Arrived late to pax by 30mins. Didn’t have to line up good decision. Wandered aimlessly. Played new butt creed. Ran into Harli, could to see she had recovered from dying at that wedding. Mind you so had I. Played Joust for first time. Was good. Had dinner with scree numbers tech Gorzilla nob and nobs sister. Got late invite to dapper meet rocked up. Made wise decision to have 2nd dinner. Which was really my lunch in it being 2nd meal of the day. Gin Palace afterwards. Great Bar we should go again some time. (Totally meet Quiz B somewhere in all this) got home at 4am. Went back to last bar from night before. Apparently I’m friends with the staff now and free drinks were had.
Saturday more hangover. More of the same as day before at pax. Played a lot of the Pokemon league and ash Ketchum’d my way to “winning” most badges. Saturday night meat was awesome. Just ask anyone who was there. EVENTUALLY THANK YOU VERY MUCH PEOPLE WHO WONT BE NAMED. got into a bar for the all blacks game. We won. We are the greatest. Stumble out of bar. Sun rising, get an uber 5mins.
Sunday. Not too hungover. Did nothing. Bought giant bean bag. Can’t wait for it to arrive. Quiet night with bunch of the guys. Good times.
Now I’m having breakfast and rushing cause I lost track of time and I’m booked into the cat cafe!
Flight leaves later tonight. Also met Trikeabout. Good guy. All I can remember ok buy going to play with cats.
(Written entirely on my phone)
Also forgot “made the worst love letter play ever”
Hahaha. Oh god. So good.
*waves*
@trjn I liked Between Two Cities also because I kept pointing at people and telling them they were between two cities because they were.
Also because I won. Mainly because I won.
PS: I finally played Love Letter and it is amazing. I got a copy despite the sellers insistence I shouldn’t get it and should get the Batman one instead.
Winning does make a game more fun :p
And yeah, Batman Love Letter is the best version of the game. Most of the official reskins have some slight rule changes and the Batman one lets you get points by playing the Batman card (1, guard in base game). Turns out that’s a pretty rad rule.
Otherwise they’re substantially the same and it doesn’t matter. Especially because you can throw in the Batman rule to the one you bought anyhow.
@princesspipster was really happy to be able to introduce Love Letter to new people (and we finally got our own copy for the library too)
Yup. Love the game. Pretty and easy.
Love Letter is a great game. I love it.
You love any game that lets you say “ham”.
Well that was a productive morning, regarding job stuff.
A mate of mine whom I grew up with, his brother in-law manages the Big W where I went for an interview for the other day, he’s gonna put in a good word for me \o/
Also another mate who works at BWS informs me that the one in town is desperate for staff and I should get in touch with them, same with his store, and to come see his manager when he is back next week.
Also another mate again who works at Coles near me told me no one has been rung over the interviews yet, even though we were meant to be rung Friday. So that’s relieving I guess!
Well, now I have a pounding headache.
Great. 🙁
Good day awesome TAYmates. Thanks for an excellent PAX weekend and similarly thanks for being so welcoming to me despite my laziness on the ‘keeping in touch’ front.
I am trying to get back into the habit of reading and posting on TAY, so watch this space.
In an exciting note, today I finished my first ever pokemon game. I already feel like a more complete person.
Thanks for the Pip hugs, I’ve missed you
Which one did you finish?
Alpha sapphire. So proud of myself.
You don’t like chocolate and are therefore not a real person.
But I’ll give you hugs anyway.
Thanks frond. I will take all the hugs and accept my lack of personhood. It’s not the worst thing I have been called.
*hugs*
Did you catch them all but? That is the real test
Not even close. I also accidentally killed the final legendary that shows up.
Oh yeah, I am a pokemon pro.
You are the PokeMasta!
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/11/02/quigley_ends_his_silence_unloads_on_government/
*long drawn out sigh*
But look at all the good the government was able to do with the money they saved. Oh wait, they didn’t save any money and they didn’t even attempt to do anything to better the lives of Australian citizens.
Hey gang,
For those who PAXed, I hope you avoid the pox this year.
For my part, some crappy interactions on reddit are ensuring that I feel done with the internet for today. So I’m out. Bye!
There’s another type of interaction with reddit? Especially reddit writers?
I had some pretty decent ones a fortnight ago. I think all those people must have been killed by reddit since then for failing to live up to their charter.
I have a blocked nose and sore throat. I apparently look pale also. Yay!
I believe my previous theories on the benefits of mask-based costumes in preventing infection may have been completely unfounded. A total lack of protection, and totally pox-free!
I am jealous. I believe that I have been poxxed. Now I need to be quarantined.
Oh man and I even accepted a hug and everything. Gross 😛
So I finally made it all the way through the X-Com: Enemy Unknown campaign. To be honest, the end of the campaign was a bit of a letdown – once I’d unlocked plasma weapons and some decent armour, the difficulty became trivial. I’ve heard the plasma stuff got nerfed in enemy within, so I will keep an eye out for that in sales and have another run through at some point.
Anyway, decided to duck over to Steam to find another good single-player game to eat up my time (because I don’t already have a crushingly overwhelming Steam backlog to work through…). They are still selling Arkham Knight, but GUYS… IT COMES WITH TF2 HATS! No shit, they are trying to flog a broken game with hats for another game.
Second – Wolfenstein: TNO is still freaking $80 on Steam. So, dejectedly, I pop over to GMG to do a price comparison… and it’s on sale for $20! Will be downloading (and hopefully playing) tonight… Much hype.
Australia Tax alive and thriving.
The impact is lessened for you and I because we’re happy and comfortable shopping around. But for those that don’t know any better I feel so bad.
Fair warning with TNO; it’s more shooty than stealth when compared to the original game. I found while the original had a nice mix of story vs game, TNO is 80% game 20% story. So great fun if you’re looking for a healthy single player fps!
Wait, the original being… Castle Wolfenstein? Wolfenstein 3D? The 2001 reboot?
Lol soz mixed up the acronyms for TNO and TOB xD scratch my comment! TNO is awesome.
I almost got TOB as well, it was only like $6.
Then again, it looks like GMG have screwed up my order, I got charged but there’s no game in my account, so I might not be Wolfensteining tonight… which makes me sad 🙁
Enemy Within does change many things, also adds way more, then there’s the “Long War” mod for it, which turns it up to 11… thousand.
I’ve been playing it quite recently, the damage varies more on the basic weapons I’ve noticed, I didn’t even need to use a pistol to bring an enemy down low enough to capture if the guy had 3 health starting, and there’s a larger option of items you can get for your troops too like new grenade types, enhancements, etc.
Enemy Within is pretty brutal in some places – unfairly so in some ways. Also the enemy mech units (can’t remember what they’re called) suddenly have double HP and take half damage from everything.
@redartifice @tech_knight @freezespreston @negativezero @beeawwb
I’m fairly certain everyone was aware of this but no Pathfinder tonight. Gives everyone a chance to relax after PAX. We shall rejoin on the 16th.
I am more than okay with this.
Alright sure thing Popdart
At some point tomorrow, I’m going to have to sit down and try to transcribe the interviews I did at PAX. There is a feeling not dissimilar to dread.
Oh and my phone probably did a shit job of recording things, if it did anything at all! Edit, quick test listen straight off the phone and it sounds like I can clearly hear my questions and the responses. Tomorrow is going to be a long day.
Would anyone be interested in an Indie game write up? I saw most, if not all but a few of the indie games including the international section
Doit!
I’ll review what I saw and I’ll write up some of the better ones. I should probably grab a list of the games.
I keep thinking that today is Sunday…
My mind is all sorts of screwy today.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-11-02/optus-to-broadcast-premier-league-in-australia/6904866
Well that’s a kick squarely to the nards of Foxtel.
Well, that’s PAX done for this year. I’m not sure if we’ll make it next year, seeing as Batboy will be at school and schools tend to frown if you chuck a sickie to go to PAX, but we’ll see.
We had a blast. The PAX pokemon league gym leaders were all fantastic! Thanks for battling with my tiny trainer and baby pokemon! Highlights included having our Pansear frozen by ice pokemon and not knowing a fire move to get unfrozen, and going into a Leaf battle with 2 water pokemon. I am super proud that my little guy did all his own battling (with only a teeny bit of help) and didn’t burst into tears when he lost. He proudly wore all his gym badges on his lanyard, and they’ll get stuck onto his special pokebag now that we’re home.
I don’t have a full album of photos yet, but on Friday we Splatoon’d, on Saturday we were Junior Pokemon Trainer Blue + Bellossom and on Sunday we were Junior Pokemon Trainer Red + Audino. We didn’t run into Team Rocket, but we did find some other wild pokemon (a wild Gardevoir and a wild Bellossom) and even a Nurse Joy!
DapperMeat was five stars!
I didn’t get to play everything or talk to everyone, but had a fantastic time anyway. Such is PAX.
“Family holiday”
Also, he’ll probably enjoy the EBExpo just as much, and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper to go to.
So @trjn, what about that Paperback?
It’s a game I’ve been chasing for about 6 months. There just hasn’t been a good way to find a copy in Australia and buying through the designer’s website is brutal thanks to high shipping costs and the low Aussie dollar. So if you’ve found a way to get it for a reasonable price, I need to know!
Anyhow, the game itself looks rad. The Rahdo Runs Through video of it does a better sales pitch than I could however Rahdo tends to be a little too positive about games that his wife likes (which Paperback falls into).
Mostly, it just looks like a very solid iteration of the deckbuilding idea that encourages the same wordy parts of the brain that Scrabble should (we all know that Scrabble is in fact a maths game for people who memorised the dictionary). It also looks easier to get to the table than Dominion because the theme is better and it all seems a bit neater.
Well we can check the place in radelaide and see if they have stock.
If they don’t then I’ll be ordering off the guys website. It looks like I can add another copy to that order for AU$45 including shipping. So I could get you a copy to Melbourne for that. Could either post it up to you or do a pickup/hand off thing
Thank you all for a wonderful PAX yet again.
Curse you PAX for ruining my body yet again.
Much love
I ate moderately healthy. Only 1 lot of junk food a day.
3am food court dinner will do that to you
Food court nap*
Sorry :S
Aight friends, my album of TAY photos is up, available here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B44lMzBcunsnd0s3QWxFeVd6Nm8 Originals and stuff available on request, or if you desperately want more photos of yourself (or for a photo to be removed) give me a shout.
I like the bit where no one knew who I was 😛
\o/ my local EB Games opens at 8am on Nov 10 for Fallout 4, guess I won’t have to wait until after 4 to collect my copies! 😀
I have next week off, the hardest part will be making a special trip into the city just to get my game. I’m tempted to see if they have a midnight launch just so I can do all the tedious travelling when I wouldn’t otherwise be doing anything useful anyway.
EB? I’d bet on them having one tbh!

I swear I saw you post your update in last TAY? 😀
How do you remember the exact month?
I have trouble recalling whether on not it was this or last year!
I can definitely say I finished TitS this year. Must have been October, quickly followed by Resident Evil Revelations 2.
Only because I was overseas at the time!
This is a saved list I update whenever necessary :D. Got a total list for 13 and 14 too but I thought months and order of completion would be worthwhile having (I think @SerNobulus had this so I totally stole it)
What for?

No idea what a bolt 3 is but sure.
*casts*
Boo!
I finished Metal Gear Solid 4.
It was terrible. Long-winded, nonsensical, self-indulgent, utterly disinteresting, severe problems with the depiction of women… basically all the problems of the other games in the series, but increased by a factor of 10.
It feels like the game found my threshold of tolerance for these issues, and used that line as a starting point for a long, long jump.
Honestly starting to lose my enthusiasm for my plans to continue with the series. And as someone who’s played the first MGS game at least thirty times, and the second one at least a dozen times, I never thought I’d be saying something like that.
I enjoyed playing 4 but found it got waaaay too fanservicey. I dunno if I’ll ever be able to complete Phantom Pain 🙁
Also, I didn’t used to have to be an expert aim in the old games & that shits me.
I really, really want to buy Rebel Galaxy… but I also really, really want to play through Wolfenstein: TNO, which I bought yesterday.
I also really, really don’t want to be halfway through a game when Battlefront comes out, because it will get left by the wayside and I hate abandoning and later picking up playthroughs halfway through. And don’t even get me started on Fallout 4.
These are tough times, people.
Drop everything for fallout.
Wolfenstein TNO is the first straight fps I’ve completed since Perfect Dark.
To be fair, I probably would have finished Half Life 2 if I didn’t lose my save.
Morning TAY
Hope everyone who made it to PAX had a great time :o)
I think I may have come away from PAX this year with a, potentially expensive, new hobby, Warhammer 40k
Any TAYbies in the Melb area regular players?
@chuloopa is nuts about it, but he lives in geelong. Same with @f4ction
I have like… 4,000 points worth of Chaos sitting in a closet. It certainly isn’t the cheapest hobby around.
Yeah. I’m always tempted to start playing again but between the price tag and the amount of time it takes to assemble and paint everything it’s just a bit too much.
@wizz-fizz If price is a concern make sure to investigate how costly an army is before you pick one. It’s been a while since I played but I would imagine a Tyranid army still outnumbers Blood Angels 10 to 1. That’s really cool in theory but it means buying ten times more paint, buying ten times as many models and spending ten times as long putting it all together (that last one is a bonus to some people).
When I first started playing I went with Imperial Guard. I was stuck playing with an under equipped, unpainted army because there was so much stuff to be purchased and just gluing it together took up all my time. All my friends used basic Space Marine armies that I could barely scratch because all my money went towards getting enough units together for a thousand point army instead of buying the infantry weapon upgrades that would make them effective.
That said huge armies are fun and a lot of them look really cool. The turns can be a bit of a chore when you’ve got a hundred models to move and roll for but if you’re playing socially that doesn’t matter and if you’re playing competitively it’s about what works not what’s quick.
[Edit: Probably should have mentioned that armies use a point system to measure army strength. So two 1000 point armies should be equally matched to play against each other, but one may consist of 100 models and the other may only have 15. Heavy and Elite units for instance are way more effective than Troops, so they’re worth significantly more points.]
I lost a Necron army during a house move a while back. Don’t ask me how – a box went walkabout between House A and House B. It made me very sad – Necrons are awesome.
Damn. That’s a pretty huge setback. I’m packing right now and I know at least one of these boxes is going to go missing. I’m just hoping it’s full of clothes or something.
Yeah, that’s basically when I gave up playing. I was pretty sick of playing with my Chaos army (which was huge, and included an entire sub-army of Khorne), and Necrons were a refreshing break. Once I lost them I basically lost the spark to keep playing.
Although, all this talk of 40k kind of gives me the urge to go out and start building a Necron army again. Are there any other Sydney-based 40k players on here?
Hey @dogman
Yeah, I am certainly getting the picture of $ cost and time cost involved.
I grabbed the Dark Vengeance starter kit to dip my toes in before I go any further.
I like the idea of building and painting the armies, I used to paint fantasy mini’s back in high school, but that will only go so far if I don’t get a chance to play.
I’m not really looking to get into competition gaming, mainly just a social outlet that get me out of the house occasionally, figured asking the friendly TAY neighborhood was a good starting point.
People tend to be overly critical of the units in the box sets but even if they’re not perfectly optimised they’re still a good start. They’re really handy when you want someone to play with but you don’t want to ask any of your friends to go and fork out a ton of money. I wish they’d do a range of armies in that size, properly balanced with fixed lists, so you could play a sort of Warhammer 40,000 Lite. I’d definitely buy Tyranid, Tau and Necron packs so I could paint them up and leave them for when guests come around.
Man, with all this Warhammer talk it’s so tempting to finish off this Eldar army and start playing again but the timing is terrible and I’ve got too many neglected hobbies already.
Yeah, I do get the feeling that some might look down on the “basic” or “pre-made” kits somewhat, but they seem pretty great for anyone that has no idea apart from some spectating and just wants to give it a go
I have a Dark Angels and Chaos Space Marine army.
Both are fairly sizable – i can make 2,000 point games fairly easily.
I don’t play regularly due to either time or lack of someone to play with, but i do have the full set up.
I’m based in Kingsville now.
It’s a damn good game, just be smart on where you buy stuff from to save some cash.
How did you get into it at PAX? Did you play one of the demo games they had set up? Did you pick up a boxed set while you were there? Anything in particular you’re leaning towards army wise?
This chain of comments (that I’m now reading for the first time) makes me want to buy more 40k (got plenty of Orks to paint!). BAD KOTAKU. BAD!
I really want to tell you to do it again because, well, 40k…
But also so so spensive and just getting so much worse…
Also – have you seen the leaked pics of the new HH board game they will be releasing?

I’m just so sick of SPES MEHREENS. I much prefer the gritty horror of the Guard (or whatever the shit they renamed them to). IG, ORKS, ELDAR, CHAOS and a small splatter of MARINES. That’s enough for me. But it feels like there are a billion space marines for every human in the 40k universe.
Not that it’s GW’s fault (for the most part). It’s people playing them. But they don’t help by making everything about the Space Marines all the time.
Now I just want to play some good ol’ Gorkamorka
I have always been fascinated with the lore of 40k, borrowed a book from a guy back in high school and spent a lot of time reading it and sketching marine weapons, but never knew anyone who played to intro me into that side of it.
I managed to play for about 2hrs at PAX this year and I really enjoyed it.
As for the armies, I’m not entirely sure yet, I like the Dark Angels and Chaos Marines of the starter kit i bought, I also really liked the random craziness of the Orks
IF money is no object then Orks are really fun and a lot more forgiving from the painting side.
Dark angels are a great army if you want space marines with flavour, but we also miss a lot of good stuff other chapters get.
Chaos’ codex is incredibly broken in a bad way. They are certainly really fun to play and collect, but you probably won’t be winning many battles, depending on how you go.
If money IS an object, i’d suggest starting with something like Grey Knights, as they will usually be very small armies, but still pack plenty of punch.
Also, can’t disagree – the lore is just about the best out there for any game.
I hope to have my starter mini’s assembled, base coated, and colour started this weekend
I am definitely leaning towards the Ork’s and Dark Angels for now, but any of the other Space Marines appear interesting too
Back to work,
back to work,
to prove to mummy that I’m no… jerk?
Cakesmith attempts to watch 100 movies in 2015 that he has never seen before!
Almost there! You only have to put up with like 2 more of these after this! Yay!
Apparently I had a lot of free time this month, because I watched a lot of movies…
The Good…
‘The Martian’ – I think almost everyone has already seen this movie so they know what is so awesome about it. If you haven’t seen it though, you probably should.‘Bridge of Spies’ – I loved this movie. It is an incredible well made movie. Sadly, I think this will go the same way as the last batch of Spielberg movies (of which I watched some others for the first time this month too). All well made movies, but will never be remembered along the likes of Schindler’s List or Saving Private Ryan. Which is a shame, because it’s a captivating story and brilliantly acted. I may not be in a rush to see it again, but if you haven’t seen it, you should definately check it out if you like Spielberg dramas.
‘Crimson Peak’ – I’m glad I saw this a little after release when a handful of reviews had come out. It was a completely mismarketed film. If you go in expecting a horror movie, you’re going to have a bad time. One of the first few lines of dialogue is “It’s not a ghost story. It’s a story with ghosts in it.” and that is 100% accurate. It’s more akin to an Edgar Allan Poe story. And visually it looks just amazing. I ended up seeing it twice and enjoyed it even more the second time around. Guillermo Del Toro’s attention to detail is just amazing. If it wasn’t for The Martian, this would be my top film for the month.
‘War Horse’ – I watched this in the lead up to ‘Bridge of Spies’ because I’d never seen it before. The name and premise always sounded a bit dumb to me. But man, this is a well made movie. The scene where the horse runs through no man’s land is so incredibly well done. You have a scene that is maybe 2mins(?) of nothing but a horse running. And it’s intense. Again, if you like Spielberg dramas, check this out. A bunch of now big name actors (Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston) appear in it in minor roles which is kind of fun. It is a bit slow to start though.
‘Lincoln’ – The second Spielberg movie I watched before checking out ‘Bridge of Spies’. I don’t know what else to say about this without repeating what I’ve said about ‘Bridge of Spies’ and ‘War Horse’. It’s a very well made movie, and Daniel Day-Lewis is just outstanding as Lincoln. But I’m in no rush to see it again.
‘Southpaw’ – The big thing this movie had going for it is Jake Gyllenhaal. The story goes exactly where you expect it to, but his performance is great. Worth watching just for that.
‘Legend’ – Like Daniel Day-Lewis in ‘Lincoln’ and Jake Gyllenhaal in ‘Southpaw’, this movie is elevated to better than it would be otherwise by Tom Hardy playing dual roles. Not one to see in cinemas, but if you’re flicking through Netflix one night and see it on there, definitely check it out.
‘Circle’ – I watched this on Netflix because I was bored and it had a decent rating. It’s…alright. It’s a great concept. 50 people stuck in a room, one will die every 2 minutes until there is only 1 left. It’s not subtle at all in its themes of racism, sexism and the likes, but it kept my attention for the short run time of 1 hour 20 minutes. Check it out if you have nothing better to do.
‘Back in Time’ – This is weird one. I both liked and didn’t like it. It ultimately didn’t know if it wanted to be a documentary on the making of the movie or the impact of the movie, and so it tries to be both. I would’ve preferred if it focused on just one. It’s on Netflix, and worth checking out if you’re a Back to the Future fan (who isn’t? Seriously, reveal yourselves so we can shame you)
The Bad…
‘We Are Still Here’ – It’s a horror movie that tries to be a throwback to those campy 70s movies while also trying to be somewhat modern at the same time. The acting is campy. People don’t behave in a realistic manner. It’s 1 hour 20 minute run time made it feel way longer than it actually is. Cannot recommend. The Ugly…

So, 17 movies in 8 weeks. Shouldn’t be too hard…I hope.
Feel free to give me suggestions on movies you think I should watch, I am keeping a list. Strangely enough, there’s a lot of “older” movies I should’ve seen but probably haven’t and as everyone found out about a couple of months ago, Disney movies.
You could make November Disney Movie Month.
What haven’t you seen again? I only remember the Hunchback cause it was brought up last night but there were like 4 others…
When you are @cakesmith or @blaghman every month is disney movie month.
I introduced my niece to Tangled the other week. 1 and a half years old and she sat there the whole time. I was so happy.
Paranormal activity ghost dimension for a comedy
Have you seen The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly? Because you should watch that. Heck, the whole Dollars “trilogy” is worth it. And while we’re on the topic of Clint Eastwood, you should watch Dirty Harry, too.
Do a whole western movie month. Watch Butch Cassidy, the searchers, unforgiven, high plains drifter
Once a time in the old west!!
They Call me Trinity and Trinity is Still My Name! Also, Support Your Local Sheriff with James Garner.
All hilarious.
Did you see Oddball? It was a surprisingly great movie (saw it at the drive in, knowing zero about it)
Not yet. I probably should though considering it happened where I grew up haha
It’s an excellent tourism video for Warrnambool!
@tigerion @redartifice No dice on Paperback or Burgle Bros at Games World.
Weird suggestion, but have you tried gametraders? I can check for you as I have to go there today
They tend not to have self-published Kickstarter titles.
Games World has no dice? What kind of games place is this?
They have dice. They just don’t keep them on their (non-existent) copies of Paperback.
OK, thanks for checking
I’ll just go direct from the designer then. Looks like I can get additional copies for around $45 shipped to me in Melb. If yourself or @redartifice are interested let me know and I’ll place the order
I thought they were out of stock if you tried to buy direct?
You can buy it from the site so it looks like they have stock. The definitely have Burgle bros as they confirmed they had stock of that.
I just hadn’t heard any confirmation that the latest print run of Paperback made it to them. I’d be shocked if you couldn’t get Burgle Bros right now.
I might wait this one out, thanks anyway
We have 3 fridges at work. 2 of them are decently sized. All of them are currently filled with alcohol for this afternoon.
Well then…
Seriously what do you even do??
😛
Well, currently I’m reading up on the Battletech Kickstarter that I backed.
Promote that man!
Hit the PvP stretch goal!
I’m super-glad that was actually a final stretch goal and not something of earlier – higher – priority.
My plan this afternoon is to go for a walk because I don’t understand betting on horses and some of us have work tomorrow so don’t want to get plastered today
So are you going to be one of the people that drinks too much and has a really shit Wednesday, or one of the people that doesn’t drink much and has a really shit Tuesday?
One of those people who slips away at 3:05 when the race is done to go home and play video games…
Lets all spare a thought for @negativezero and wish him all the best on his move to the states. HOPE EVERYTHING GOES AWESOME FOR YOU BUDDY 🙂
Also say hi to the Seattle Space Needle for me! All the best! 🙂
He’ll have to make sure and shout, it is quite tall. There is nothing unusual about a grown man shouting at a building.
I do it all the time. DAMN BUILDINGS. (cc. @redartifice)
So much anger.
Brace yourself, people are going to comment on your “funny” accent every day.
http://www.tickld.com/x/jaw/this-guy-just-changed-the-way-we-see-star-wars-jar-jar#page-1
I…. Uh…. Theres nothing I can refute here. Argument is solid.
I’m happy to accept that premise, if only because it’s far more interesting than the more likely one of him being a bit shit.
I am sitting down, and I think I need to sit down some more. Everything I know is wrong.
…
In the grand tradition of my people, I’m going to choose to hold on to my prejudices even in the face of evidence to the contrary.
…
Nope. Can’t do it. My world is forever changed, my eyes opened. All hail Lord Jar Jar.
How… this fits into everything too well! O_o
Holeeee shiiit.
Dang. Even the stuff from the Clone Wars animated series sort of directly supports this theory. Heck, there was an episode where Jar Jar was suspected of being a Jedi by the Separatists and helped bring an entire planet into the fold of the Republic in a way that both strengthened and weakened each side and continued the war.
Darth Jar Jar would have been hilarious to see. If only the charade of a ditzy character had lasted part of the first movie and not the entirety. Yoda would have been equally annoying if he had kept his space gremlin nature for all of Empire Strikes Back. Damn it Lucas.
Sweet mother of baby jesus himself, Darth Binks is real!!
Haha, oh man I might actually give a damn about the new Star Wars if that was the case and Disney run with it. Would be such a great twist.
I had the same reaction. Especially the whole cardboard cutout Dooku character
I miss hanging out with TAYbies already.
We’ll need another board games night!
Time to invade the @alexpants/@powalen establishment again.
I like this plan!
I really want to read that Fallout 4 article, but I don’t want spoilers. We’ll see if I make it to the end of the day…
I read it its stuff like the sky is blue and look at this lighting effect. But there are some new areas shown so I guess that could be something you don’t want to see. Some video there too didn’t watch them cause phone.
They do have the completed perk tree which I consider not really spoilers but others may. Here’s a link if you want to check it out.
EDIT: I also don’t really want the game spoiled but just quickly scrolled through in the off-chance there was a perk tree (which obviously, there was)
Well, I guess not really completed because some higher ranks of certain perks have special effects.
They do? Interesting
If you can be bothered waiting for a response just tag me here with a link to the article, what info you’re hoping is in the article and what sort of spoilers you want to avoid. I’ll either give you the all clear, tell you the info isn’t there or (providing it’s not ten pages of info) re-post a censored version. I’m making an effort to stop considering things that don’t actually ruin anything spoilers, so bumping into the odd spoiler or two in an article would help with that.
I’m not normally one for media blackouts, I’m devouring every piece of information I can on Dark Souls 3 (which having now played it OHMYGODHYPESQUEE) but without exploration and discovery the Bethesda Fallout games are just kind of a shit open world shooter. So I’ve avoided everything except for the E3 presentation.
Watch the SPECIAL videos as well.
Butt nothing else.
I regret playing Dark Souls 3 at PAX
because now I have to wait for it to be released when I’ve already had a taste of it.Any open-world sandbox really feels like it should be discovered by the player. Like, if someone told me about a certain location in Fallout 3 ahead of me finding it, it would have ruined the experience for me.
Fallout 3 spoilers (yes it’s old, but people here are replaying it/playing it for the first time and might not have seen this):
Specifically, I’m talking about Oasis. I stumbled across it by accident and it was an amazing experience to find all this vegetation hiding on the other side of a little nook. I’d love to experience that kind of thing again and Fallout 4 has the chance to do it for me.I’m not on a total media blackout for Fallout 4, just picking and choosing so I don’t see/learn things I don’t want to. I’ve watched the trailer and all the SPECIAL videos (which are fantastic).
I knew it was out there but not where. But yeah I loved fallout 3. And I think it’s cause I went I blind only knowing the opening the the quest where you are in a town and there’s a dog and I don’t remember the name of it.
I dunno, I find that only applies if there sandbox is small enough that there’s only a few things to discover. Talking about what you’ve found in the wasteland makes me want to explore it myself and see what I can find. Even if you tell me exactly where to find something specific as long as you don’t break everything that makes it interesting down line by line I’m ok with that. It’s like hearing a rumors. Granted it’s a little different because it’s often said with certainty. ‘There is…’ isn’t quite the same as ‘I heard there was…’.
D’oh! I never found that!
I was going to put the location name outside of the spoiler tags but it kinda gives it away a bit. 😛
You should still check it out. Interesting area with some fun stuff to do.
I threw F3 into my ps3 a month or so ago. After it decided never to load, I put it back on the shelf & played some Skyrim instead.
Lost most of my original progress when my 360 kicked the bucket, all I managed on ps3 was beating the main quest I think.
Buying New Vegas pretty much put my F3 progress on indefinite hiatus. Getting 4 next week won’t help :p
I went something like 30 or more hours without finding Dogmeat in my first game. Somehow I’d managed to circle all around that area without ever seeing him. Wasn’t until someone at work mentioned it & I had to use a guide.
I’m good at avoiding the cool bits :p
Most of it wouldn’t load up on my phone, I managed to copy the pic of the entire perk tree & descriptions before skedaddling outta there.
Now I won’t spend all night on character creation!
#preparedness
Now you will spend all the nights leading up to the game’s release creating your character. =P
I totally forgot & you remind me after bed time?!
Was fretting about not having any money left after PAX due to overspending and was about to cancel my Pip Boy order and the Battletech kickstarter and start crying.
Payslip pops into my email and its over $5000. Due to having changed employers this week and technically leaving the company I was with I had 100 hours of annual leave and 250 hours of sick leave payed out.
Even after taking nearly a month off work getting payed sick leave I still had that much O_o.
Still, games!
Hooray for both!
So… drinks are on Freeze?
A lot were over the weekend.
holy half of it going to the taxman batman
That part was less fun.
Oh yeah, this. If you’re not sure whether they taxed you properly, you should keep some aside for tax time. Otherwise: rude surprise.
Awesome, man!
Good thing your employer didn’t switcheroo before your medical woes, or you’d be out all your accrued sick leave!
I could always have another one. I’m good at stuffing things up for myself.
You’re probably already on top of this, then, but mayhaps you should keep some of that money aside, just in case.
\o/
Also, with the way you talked about the Battletech KS, I wouldn’t have let you cancel it.
You wouldn’t have had to try very hard.
I’d have paid for it if I had to 😛
Did you end up getting the jacket? It only has a couple of hours to go.
Nah, decided not to. Never gonna wear it 🙁
Gonna trade my Fire Emblem Awakening for Fallout 4, if anyone wants to bear EB’s offer, it’s up for grabs.
Beat EB trade values? Shouldn’t be hard.
I’ll punch you in the dick then bang your mother. Deal?
Sweet!
My mum dated a guy your age once. Was kissed I never got to meet him before the inevitable breakup & call him dad!
Very amusing Freudian slip there, man!
But it makes no sense!
Remember JB HiFi do trades as well, heh.
I’m working out in the burbs & JB isn’t close enough. Otherwise I would go straight to the best price
Ooh, fair enough man! I understand then!
How much?
Make me an offer 🙂
Just for reference, I presume eb gives about $20. I was anecdotally told they go for $45 on gumtree(didn’t bother to check).
I’d prefer it went straight to a fan rather than through a corporate money eater & you get mate’s rates of course, for being so Screeish 🙂
How about we all take a guess – I reckon EB will offer you … 12.
Is he using a 50% trade in bonus? Im thinking no more than $8
Should…should I be apologising for this?
How about the middle ground and go about $32.50? Is that too little? I never finished the copy Gorzy let me borrow, so I would like to do that.
Done! Dm me your details on the Twitter & I’ll send you some bank deetz too 🙂
Thanks to Zangief, my new ID for work is pretty hilarious, in an “oh my god that beard” way. Though comparing it to my old one, I don’t even recognise that other guy. This is a weird place to be.
Also, finishing work at 2 is pretty great 😛
It is a truly impressive beard 🙂
From those of us that finished work at 10pm last night… screw you :p
Plus the beard doubled your head size
Yeah I enjoy finishing at 2pm. Not 2am like this week though.
Left guy is super cool and friendly
Right guy is super scary and oh my god pls don’t hurt me
Is the beard staying, or do you have plans to get rid of it? Just curious.
Dunno, really. I am somewhat inclined to get rid of it now PAX is gone, since I was pretty much only keeping it around for Zangief. But on the other hand, I have gotten kind of attached to it.
…also, it came up in conversation at climbing the other night, and I asked in general what others thought, a whole bunch of them said I should keep it. Including a particular girl there >.>
#popcorn
Yeah, feels like it’s been a while 😛
Finally got an SSD for my computer. Now if I could only find my Windows 7 disc for a fresh install.
Do you have the serial key? If so, you can download the install files onto a USB and install from there
Also – booting from an SSD for the first time is up there with the best things ever.
No serial key I’m afraid. All that stuff was bundled up together and put in a drawer somewhere. I just have to remember which one.
Given that it’s now taking over 5 minutes for my computer to boot up I’m really looking forward to those faster speeds.
There are a bunch of programs that’ll pull out your product key if you can’t find it
I’m dead serious when I post this: https://www.magicaljellybean.com/
You shouldn’t see that huge a boot time increase in 7. Boot was optimized in 8 so you’d want to upgrade to 10.
Standard Disclaimer: I worked on Windows 10 so have a vested interest in seeing people upgrade to it.
I dunno, when I went from a mechanical HDD to an SSD with just 7 I went from a 2 & a half minute boot time, to about a 40 second boot time 😛
Now in about that time with WIndows 10 I can have Firefox open & be surfing the webs.
^ this. My boot time went from about 90 seconds to about 20 for Win7 once I switched to an SSD.
I also got shafted buying Windows over reddit, so don’t have the option to upgrade to 10 🙁
Really? I had an MSDNAA key from my TAFE days, allegedly they were not getting the upgrade, but after I reinstalled updated etc I got it.
All it says is that my copy of windows is not genuine every time I boot, and that I should pay $X00 to buy a legit version.
I think it might be a problem with one of the patches I downloaded – when I first bought it, it was fine, but then after installing some updates I keep having this issue. Problem is, having the ‘bad’ version of windows means that I can’t dl any more patches to fix it.
It isn’t the end of the world, but it’s pretty annoying.
Oh man that sucks :/ How stupid.
My boot time in Win 8/10 on a SSD is like 8 seconds. So fast I don’t have time to interrupt it to fire up the BIOS half the time.
haha. Mine would be a lot faster if my motherboard posted faster heh.
Walked into JB to get a 2nd Wii U Pro controller, walked out with a 2TB external hard drive for my Wii U alongside it.
Am I doing it right?
Yep!
\o/
My fairy bread article got cross-posted to Lifehacker today.
I find this odd and I’m not sure why.
Cause fairy bread is fucken awesome..?
That fairy bread picture gets all the clicks.
Also, I failed to bring fairy bread to PAX. I blame lack of sleep. I will bring fairy bread to all future board game meats. Might even invest in some new fancy sandwich cutters.
Why am I seeing an increase in the last few weeks of news articles about people coming out and defending feral pigs, cats, dogs, rabbits etc and how they shouldn’t be culled..? :S It scares me since i’ve seen the damage these animals do to farmland, bushland & our native animals, and it’s awful.
A pack of feral dogs can be a pretty fucking scary thing.
I remember once, whilst riding my motorbike late at night through country NSW, going past a feral dog that looked like something out a warewolf movie. It looked as big as I was sitting on my bike (probably wasn’t actually), I could see it’s huge K9’s and it was obviously physically built for chasing things down and killing them. All I could think about at the time was that If i fell of my bike now I would never get back on it again.
It’s kinda easy to see how roomers of wild panthers running around various parts of Australia get stared. Let house cats and dogs go feral for a few generations and survival of the fittest sees that they soon start to resemble their more top-of-the-food-chain ancestors.
I never had an encounter with wild pigs though but my understanding is they are twice as tough as feral dogs and much smarter.
I’ve gotta say, that’s the best spelling of ‘rumours’ I have ever seen 😀
My brother has been pig hunting a few times, apparently those things are vicious.
Will I know it was primarily the pig hunter pushing against anti-gun law changes as they were shit scared of facing an injured boar with a bolt action rifle
Pigs tear up land and legs alike. They’re terrifying up close o.0
That’s pretty much how he described it.
Hearing him talk about how one was charging at him when his gun jammed is enough to make my palms sweaty.
Rule one: keep all extremities in the vehicle at all times 😛
I’ve done spotlight duty *once*, and that was enough for me lol.
Friends have lost their blooded hunting dogs, and they themselves are scary enough. Feral pigs are absolutely horrible.
There’s something to be said about the kind of folk that are drawn to pigging as recreation, but I think it’s a case of ‘lesser of two evils’ here.
And hell, so long as they’re hunting pest species, I guess it’s ok to a degree. I mean, it’s not, but it is. Or something.
Yeah man. It’s fucked up.
I remember a mate of ours who manages a 2,500 acres property west of Toowoomba telling us about the feral cats that plague the area & how big they are. It’s like nope. Fuck that shit. Also the feral pigs that disregard electric fences are pretty terrifying too imo.
I think some people link feral with neglected/abused pets, so if they don’t have any sort of experience with the damage feral animals cause they probably default to seeing them as being the victims or just animals harmlessly living naturally. I’m guessing in their mind it’s closer to defending sharks because they don’t realise a feral cat is incredibly destructive towards everything around it. They’re like if your fluffy pet cat chugged a bottle of blood from 28 Days Later.
There’s a really good reason for farmers to carry firearms, and feral dogs are one such reason.
I remember my cousin lost his dog (big, beautiful german shepard) while visiting family in Gympie last year, and at the same time there were a lot of family pets/working dogs getting torn apart by a large pack of feral dogs. They visited a couple farms to look at remains before their dog was found alive (but thinner) halfway down the highway back to Brisbane. (Smart dog seems to have avoided cars AND the packs of ferals by running along the side of the road and not straying too far from it.)
Thing about the attacks was that the pack was pretty big (at least half a dozen dogs), and they weren’t killing for food, or claiming a territory, they were just roaming and killing for fun. Once an animal gets to that point, it’s done. I really think people don’t understand how dangerous these things can be.
I get that people are squeamish about the kind of person who actually enjoys killing, and a cull is rife for abuse from the sadistic, but culls need to happen.
Hell even roo’s are a pest if they don’t keep the numbers in check, but they’re a tasty pest so y’know 😛
Alright, so @freezespreston, @cj and several others (sorry, I have forgotten as I am still bloody tired) suggested that I monetize my inkling girl hats. I only have a photo of my dog wearing it, but should I? And would people be interested in the boy ones as well?
You should. Seriously I think you could sell those for $200+ and people would buy them. They’re really well made. Plus they’re handmade so even if the materials are cheap, you need to consider your own time and effort has to go into making them and value that accordingly.
I think I’ll custom make them for Taybies.
Templates for the rest =P
Robot inkling head! 😛
I was thinking more along the lines of actual measurements and colour of your choice
@freezespreston @shane could I get your help for kids measurements? Seeing as you guys have kids?
I can do that, but my kids are tiny for their ages.
That should be fine. I just want to get an idea. I just need height and around the head.
Height and around the head? I don’t know if we have a tape measure in the house, but if we do, I’ll let you know.
Thanks. I wanna make some for children too, as they seem to also love splatoon
Do it!
I was post an image but…
Wait…what?
I meant to say, i would post an image (of the hat) but I only have one of my dog wearing it, and it does show the whole thing
Mrs is supposed to be posting ‘the goods’ today (if she remembers), I’ll have to send you my bank deets from home tonight 🙂
I’ll pay you once I have them.
Kewl
I’m sure there’s an audience for the boy inkling hats aswell. And off the top of my head I know one person who’d want to buy one.
I will have to do research then as Numbers’ hat didn’t want to stay on his head
Finally managed to give myself a kick in the arse last night and jumped into Tales from the Borderlands Ep 2 (I played Ep 1 on release and absolutely loved it and just…haven’t touched it since).
Fast forward to 1:30am and I’m part of the way through Ep 3.
God damn I love that game.
Bro.
Bro, bro.
I couldn’t figure out why the hell they were doing that till it jumped back to the present and I was reminded that Rhys and Fiona screw with each others’ stories 😛Bro bro bro bro.
I love the narrative breaks. So awesome, and a great game. Look forward to discussing it all once you finish. Enjoy! You may or not bro the answer to this question, but when you’re able to choose who to blame for the situation while talking to Vallory, if you choose August does she actually shoot him? I chosePatrick WarburtonVasquez and he got shot all up in the chest lumps, but I got the impression she’d shoot him regardless of what I said.Hah. ‘Bro the answer.’
I blamed Felix (because he was already dead and definitely responsible for the moneysplosion) and Vallory still shot Vasquez.I’m holding on to the brolief that Felix was doing right by me so I’m playing Fiona as cut up by the whole thing with him, rather than blaming him. I’m letting Sasha be the angry child (despite the fact that my Eye told me she’s 24)I was surprised by the ages, too.
I have bro idea. I chose Patrick Warburton because he was Patrick Warburton and I’m not inclined to bro back and un-shoot Patrick Warburton.I was giving Vasquez hell every chance I got bro as soon as that came up I kinda had to go for him. The more I think of it, the more I would have liked to get rid of August but yeah, I don’t think it would have let me.It’s the best
Bitched about the insert in Cosmic Encounter on Twitter. All of a sudden I have the designer of the game tweeting at me
Hurray?
Board game storage is weird. Most game boxes are designed to get the game safely from factory to shelf. Being able to easily pull out/pack up the game is not really a concern (with few glorious exceptions).
Yes, I have been tempted to write about the glory of Plano. I think that one might have to wait a while though.
Tweeting ‘at you’ makes it sound like an act of aggression.
Are they, uh… not receptive to criticism?
I can see it now.
‘Comrade Putin, they tweeted at us!’
‘We will not abide this provocation… fire the nukes’.
Naw, he basically said “throw it out and put the expansions in.” but I need something or shit will just roll around, might have to make a run on containers/snap seal bags at lunch
Those little snap-shut tupperware containers they sell at Coles are quite good for storing board game bits. They’re made to stack, so it’s pretty easy to get 2-3 of the little ones and stack them together with rubber bands.
Yeah. Ideally I’d get ones big enough to put all five planet + all four ships in, and still fit all 6 colours in the one box, but I think I’m in magical christmas land there.
Bigger tupperware!
Honestly, the snap-shut lids are a godsend. I once got to the point where I was storing smaller tupperware full of pieces inside larger tupperware… I had a problem.
They are especially handy for Risk pieces, since you can have one container per colour and don’t have to sort through the pieces to pick out all your own ones every damn time.
Hoorah, hayfevering something bad this morning. Been like 2 years since I had any real issues with my hayfever too 🙁 This time it woke me up at 4am, damn it.
To the zyrtec!
Actually, there’s some new spray ones like Nasonex on the market that are great for a stuffed up head (I was prescribed it for sinusitis and it worked like a charm). You can get a stronger version on a script if you chat to your GP.
That sounds pretty nifty! I haven’t bought anti-allergy stuff in ages either I should have some on hand, i’ll have to check it out, thanks 😀
The last week I have been:
a) reducing my caffeine intake
b) going to bed earlier
c) forcing myself to wake up at a consistent time, including getting up early on the weekend
in a bid to get better sleep. So far, I have had some of the most miserable sleep of my adult life with the exclusion of the times I had tooth abscesses and ear infections and was therefore in too much pain to sleep.
This is just a whine. I’m tired.
Have a coffee, that’ll help.
Not helping.I still drink coffee at work (in order to maintain my humanlike façade) just not after 4pm since I usually go to bed at 11 or 12.
I hear the other thing you need to do is get blue-based lights out of your sight for a good while before bed (an hour or so?), which includes mobile/tv/monitor screens.
I tried to do ‘good things for sleep’ the other night too (mostly because I have been sleeping poorly, waking, then crashing into bed as soon as I got home). Had the worst nightmares, all night. Plus temperature fluctuations.
Yeah, 30-60 minute embargo on screens such as computer monitors, TVs, tablets and phones. That was explained in a resilience workshop our team attended last week and shockingly the most common question the workshop leader gets now that she didn’t when she started 5 years ago is “but what are we supposed to do with that time?” because apparently the idea of talking to loved ones or even just reading an old-fashioned book is becoming a lost art.
I’d say about half the time at around 11 I’ve moved away from the computer and fussed about in the kitchen and straightened things up around the place instead of looking at a screen right up until the point I go lie down, and I can’t really discern a meaningful difference. I’m probably sleep-checking my phone in the middle of the night and not realising it. I’d put it out of reach, but of course, I use it as an alarm clock.
Likewise. Might need to invest in a traditional alarm clock.
Man, I bet you’d get some funny looks buying one of those. “What’s that for? A fallout shelter?”
I started doing the C thing this year, has made me feel so much better getting up at the same time every day of the week. It also means i’m asleep by like midnight which is nice.
The whole earlier/consistent sleep thing did about as much for me too. Always seems like it ends up a choice between sleeping badly, or sleeping worse 😛
In other news even though the acquisition of our company has yet to be approved by the SEC and there are several shareholder lawsuits in action, the CEO of the acquiring company has decided to start doing a world tour of his new offices, starting with Sydney. Apparently he flies into Sydney this morning on his private jet, accompanied by bodyguards, for a bit of a dog and pony show which includes me having to wear a suit and clean my desk on the off chance he feels like a tour of the trenches, because god forbid he get the impression people here actually do work occasionally.
I suspect that
peopleCEOs don’t become CEOs because of the ungodly amount of money they make, peopleCEOs become CEOs to gain a captive population of ass-kissers to make them feel important. That’s really cynical. Like it or not, most effective CEOs are there because they’re good at it.
It’s really the owner-operator managers that are the tyrants.
My last boss.
If you own a company and have more than 10 employees, DONT BE THE FUCKING MANAGER
you are too close and will end up with everyone hating you. Hire a actual manager who knows how to deal with people and has a foot in both camps
What tends to be the problem is that a lot of small businesses start because the owner/operator has a good technical capability- they can machine good, they can circuit good, they have IP- but as they grow, they never go back and train in management and “soft skills,” which have just as big an impact on a business. You look at almost any business and one of the highest costs is payroll, so why the hell you wouldn’t invest in people management is beyond me.
The smart guys- the REAL smart guys- in SMEs take the time to train and hire managers.
Spot on, damn it red i need to take you to parties so you can explain my point of view in a eloquent and thoughtful way. I could develop that skill myself but i can only circuit good.
I’ll be your PR manager.
“No, what he meant to say was…”
(I used to rewrite all of my manager’s external letters for her, she’d get me to come in and pace around her office so she could, n her words, sound appropriately wonk-y)
Is it, though? You’re talking about effective CEOs… I’m talking about the ones whose contribution to the company is setting new ‘strategic directions’ copied from a 90s-era management book, and leaving all the messy ‘implementation’ up to other people while they work on their golf game. the ones whose first communications in their new roles are usually notes about how they’ve changed all the department names and everyone needs to update their auto-signatures.
The kind of people who actually respond well to the obvious efforts to show off style over substance, who are so disconnected from reality that they actually believe the smoke blown up their asses.
I have zero respect for style-over-substance, beyond a grudging and resentful acknowledgement that there’s obviously some kind of rare talent required to convince people that you have a high-6/7-figure salary worth collection of ‘soft skills’ that manifests as vague psychobabble.
(Plus there’s plenty to suggest that top-level business success goes hand-in-hand with narcissism and sociopathy/psychopathy.)
I’m not saying all CEOs are great, but I am saying that it’s cynical to believe that there’s not a great deal of skill in managing a big company.
Those that are mismanaged tend to have CEOs removed quickly.
Unless they have a sort of revolving-door CEO position from doing that over and over again, and CEOs are particularly good at the kind of networking, favour-dealing, and statistics-abuse to secure themselves the next branch to swing from on their journey of lucrative incompetence…
But on reflection, a lot of my criticism comes from a place of ignorance, too. My own experience in management positions is that a tremendous amount of effectiveness can be almost invisible to the layman.
For example: something as simple as evaluating the qualities of your people and putting the right person in the right role can have dramatic improvements in effectiveness, if not even being the difference between success and failure. To the casual observer, the success is the result of the efforts by the people placed in those roles, not the director who decided where everyone would be most effective and was proven correct.
It stands to reason that there could possibly be other equally less-obvious decisions with high impact.
I think you’re definitely coming from an “in the trenches” mentality, where management has to have an holistic view of a business which has many competing factors.
CEOs have different responsibilities legally to employees- if a CEO fucks up, they can get jailed/fined, for example, which means that their decision making process weights other things differently. You might look at golf games as frivolous, but CEOs often do out of hours work (and many of those golf games are actually a canny way to get 3 hours alone with another CEO, they’re not going out to the course with their best mates from school)
That’s not to say they’re all paragons of decency, or that all CEOs are effective managers or leaders, just that there is other shit involved in leading a major company that sitting on a lower rung won’t expose you to.
This is absolutely right. If you’re the CEO of a large or multinational company (or even just on the board of one), you’re not only dealing with running the company, but also oversee that company’s interactions with competitors, suppliers and government. Political lobbying is a very important part of the job, as is finding investors, and keeping existing shareholders and board members happy. There are plenty of great CEOs and plenty of terrible ones, just like at all levels of management, but once you get up to those top levels, the personal responsibility is huge and if your company fucks up, you’re the one the prosecutors will be after. That’s certainly part of the reason for the perks and salaries.
“(Plus there’s plenty to suggest that top-level business success goes hand-in-hand with narcissism and sociopathy/psychopathy.)”
HOLY SHIT A JOB THAT MATCHES MY PERSONALITY PROFILE.
Was tired & easily confused last night, so I switched off Divinity & threw Darksiders in.
Apart from having to endure those same 4 voice actors from EVERY game ever, I actually had fun this time around.
The first time I tried it at a friend’s house & the room was a tad too sunny & the tv wasn’t as good as mine. So this time I was able to quickly make it through the introduction almost as far as I had been before.
A much more pleasurable experience this time. Looking forward to giving it a proper go.
Most people acknowledge my existence before rummaging through my drawers looking for parking vouchers T_T
i went to Dendys last night and watched Mistress America.(spoiler free)
it was certainly a movie, i really liked it, the banter was hilarious but as for the actual plot i have no idea what the fuck was going on.
Side note: Whenever a movie does weird quirky stuff i sometime struggle to get a read on it and it throws me from enjoying the movie. I feel kind of alienated on purpose. I understand its probably designed that way and i appreciate that it takes skill to accomplish but being left at the end of the film with a mixed emotional response isn’t something i know how to deal with. SO a Wednesday morning question
What film makes you feel odd at the end, like a mix of emotions that dont make sense?
The King of Comedy. Bought it years ago after seeing half of it on TV, it’s a minor scorsese film with Robert de Niro and Jerry Lewis. Always makes me feel deeply conflicted as to whether it’s a satire or a stalker thing, and to how funny it actually is.
Every time I tried to watch one of the Twilight movies I ended up confused and angry. Does that count?
“every time i try”
How many times have you attempted this rize? i thought it was okay and i only watched it twice and once was with the volume down while i did a voice over of edward with a bogan accent with my friend.
My wife is a fan of the books and the movies so I tried to be nice with the first few movies and watch them with her. After a few attempts we agreed that me yelling at every shitty scene (all of them, in every movie of the series) was making it hard for her to enjoy them and it was best that I go sit quietly in another room so she could enjoy her audio/visual garbage.
The upside is that I didn’t have to watch all of them, but the downside is that if I smash up the discs she’ll probably figure out that it was me trying to stop her from tainting my TV and household with a series that would honest to god be more enjoyable if I watched it while on fire.
i admire you passion.
😛
I asked @rize to play games once and this was the response I got…

Sometimes i feel like everyone on TAY is too funny. Like it spoils my interactions with non tay peeps because its not a laugh a minute with a million different people making witty pop culture references. That made me laugh way to hard out loud.
I think my favourite thing about that photo is that his TV looks like it’s wearing a top hat.
Rize is a fancy man. I saw him wear a vest once to a casual social gathering. Of course his tv has a hat..
It would only be made better if it lined up with the dudes head on screen.
Oh wow, it really does.
At the risk of breaking the illusion, it’s a surround sound speaker sitting on top of a Wii U sensor bar 😛
Akira. I have seen it a hundred times (conservative estimate), and every time the credits roll I still have no freaking idea what just happened.
Someone’s Knocking at the Door – a weird, low budget grindhouse style trash flick. It was a total trip, and pretty fun if you’re into that kind of thing. It did my head in through, and left me confused for like a straight week after watching it.
Akira and Eva 1.11-3.33 do that to me too, but it tugs on various emotional responses in a way where i can at least try and understand. Although this is only from dozens of viewings, my first few times watching them i just didn’t understand. I mean i still dont but i feel like they reveals themselves more and more with each watch.
Both End of Evangelion and Eva 3.33 had that in spades for me.
“You’ve nowhere to hide
Nowhere to run
Your village will burn like the heart of the sun!
With infinite glee
It’s going to be me
That slaughters the world!”
Has been stuck in my head for days now…
Also suitably how I feel about the world doing these 10 hour shifts at work covering the phones…
So what’s new with everyone here?
Laika really loves bubble wrap, huh?
Haha yep, had some left over last night and she absolutely lost her shit! Amazing to behold.
It’s so cute. Sid would probably run. The wuss =P
Yeah that was adorable, just pouncing on the bubblewrap xD
Got a new trucker hat.
oh right, super saiyan…
Oh, right, Super Saiyan…
You gosh darn dun did it now son!
“For thousands of years I lay dormant. Who has disturbed my-”
“Hey best buddy!”
“Oh, it’s you. Explain idiot!”
“SOME IDIOT, GET IN MY WAY TO STOP ME!”
Of all the places… you picked the Arctic!?
You’re wearing a jacket!
Oh no Trunks! Your jacket is weighing you down!
Has everyone seen the ad for the new COD game? The Kevin one? It’s awesome.
Freya’s phone died so I went and bought her a new one yesterday. It uses a different SIM card, so I had to drive to the other side of Canberra (because there’s only one Virgin Mobile store in the ACT) to get her a new one. They just pulled it out from a drawer, scanned it and said “get her to activate it online or call customer service.”
Kinda wish I’d’ve just asked any random telco to hand over a SIM and save the drive. Somehow I doubt it works that way.
a scissors is the quick fix.
Did this with my old telstra sim, cut it down to micro. It wasn’t pretty, but it worked just fine.
Legitimate suprise/pride ensued.
I actually tried to do that, changing from an Internode (who use Optus) normal SIM to a nano SIM (i4 to 6+)… I went to the Optus store since it’d be the same network and they seemed to think it would be fine. Spent the next 2 weeks having no SIM as they tried to work out why it wouldn’t activate. Finally found out that the SIMs are registered to each reseller so only an Internode SIM would work.
Kind of glad that Virgin decided to keep one store in the ACT then.
My poor mother-in-law bought herself a cheap optus Nokia phone. It was supposed to be an unlocked one, but when she put her sim in, it demanded a network unlock code. She thought she’d been doing something wrong but it turned out to be a glitch – once we finally got through to a competent tech on the phone, he gave us a code to unlock it (no charge) and now she has her shiny new little not-smart phone.
I think the biggest problem with the people running things is they have a career, not a job. They move on before properly seeing things through & then implement those same ideas elsewhere without ever really knowing if it worked.
Whenever I chat with the okdulies at work, they can tell me how so&so tried the same thing, with a different name, 10 years ago, before things went back to how they were.
@redartifice @transientmind
Implementing organisational change is a really hard thing to do.
That doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be done.
Fo sho. I just think it needs to be looked at in the long-term rather than seeing the budget at the end of financial year, patting each other on the back, then escaping before anyone realises the ship has sprung a leak.
They move on to bigger & better opportunities off the back of shoddily reused ideas with shiny new names.
If companies are going “back to the old ways” it means one of two things- the scenario you outlined, or an intractable organisational culture that’s hidebound from the lower levels.
Either aren’t good, and both sound like poorly managed change.
Where I work, it’s both!
So how did everyone enjoy PAX?
It was awesome to bump into some of you guys again – bummed i missed so many more of you – i had no reception on my phone the whole time so couldn’t keep tabs on where and where was going on.
Didn’t get much time to play vidya games over my saturday and sunday, as my bro-in-law and I just couldn’t be bothered with the queues. Played some PS4 screen cheat, just cause 3, warhammer total war, world of warships and a few other pretty decent offerings here and there. Missed the bigger games, though.
Most of our time was spent in the tabletop area browsing the shops, learning to play new games, and painting.
So now I have 2 new game problems:
Warhammer 40k conquest – played a demo game, bought the core set and an expansion. So much fun. Really great game even if you’re not a 40k fan.
Magic – Damn it – i’ve avoided this game for so long, but we wanted to get the MtG pin, so we played a demo game. I can see why it’s so popular. Stunning artwork, solid gameplay, and easy enough to understand.
Also picked up the force awakens boxed set for X-wing. Soooo purdy.
Meanwhile, i got wiped in the dog fight tournament on the saturday… haha
Also, reaper minis are surprisingly good these days. We both picked up a few bones minis and hit the painting tables – also entered a speed painting comp where my mini was one of the last to be eliminated, which is always a good feeling. But the winner totally deserved it – was soooo pretty.
I grabbed Conquest and XCOM: The Board Game.
I’m still bummed Necrons aren’t added yet, but once they are… you’ll know what I’ll be maining!
Niiice.
Thinking of picking up the nid expansion too – looks interesting
We need to 1v1 sometime then, I need practice cuz apparently there’s tourneys on a fair bit 😀
Which suburb are you in?
Edithvale, south eastern suburbs.
But again, I won’t be seriously practicing until Necrons are out 🙂
Do we have any idea how far away the necrons will be?
I know it was confirmed long ago, but when that’ll actually happen I don’t know of any release date for it.
All else fails, I got Tau 😀
Maaaaaaagiiiiiiccc
Joooooooooin ussssssss
*hissing noise*
If you’re really interested, give Magic Duels on Steam a crack before you spend more money, and get friends on board. If I wasn’t playing with friends I wouldn’t be playing at allI’ve been playing with the brother in law who also really likes it – so i doubt it will ever become serious.
Just another game to pay when we want a quick bit of fun.
No way known i will delve to the level on buying cases… that’s just… intense…
And i’m saying that as a 40k fan!
Commander is my favourite casual format, perhaps have a look at that one- pregen decks are about $40, but my cheapest deck I think I spent an extra…$4? on over what I already had.
Sorry that I missed you.
Did you see the fallout miniatures game, that looked amazing. Certainly with all the scenery and the like that they had
I know, right?
It’s all good though.
I did see some of the painting minatures in the display case which i thought were all sorts of awesome – i didn’t realise there was actually a game for them though!
Theirs a fallout minatures game?! *squeezes money*
Looked so cool with the way they had it setup. Vault dwellers as your units, as well as awesome looking things like radscorpions.
It was good to finally (briefly) meet you!
A large chunk of my fellow Enforcers are going to volunteer at PAX PRIME next year. So I made the call to do the same. Now I need to save money very quickly (to get things booked well in advance).
Holy shit snacks that’s awesome!
It will be if I get accepted! Long way to go for that, though.
OMG.
Come stay with me!
EDIT: That’s a 100% serious offer by the way. I’ll be living there, should have a spare room and intend to go to the event too so more than happy to provide accommodation.
That would actually be great and would save me a whole mess of money. I shall keep it in mind 😀
What was it like, signing up to be an Enforcer? I hadn’t even considered it, but it seems like the best way to PAX, for me. Just being in that environment was something I found to be the most rewarding aspect of PAX, that time I went. As long as I could steal some personal time to spend in the indie booths (that’s the heart of PAX, IMO), having an actual purpose in being there sounds like a satisfying way to PAX.
Depends entirely on where you end up being allocated. I got about two hours of free time a day, that was it. And I didn’t volunteer much extra time 😡 But I was leading a team in the Expo Hall so I had my work cut out for me (DAMN YOU, MSY AND WARGAMING GIVEAWAYS).
The actual signing up was okay, though this was the second time I tried. Putting in an application doesn’t take much effort!
I may have spent most of this morning trying to list out my SPECIAL stats for Fallout 4.
THE WORST PART IS I AM 1 SPECIAL STAT OVER THE LIMIT!
Cool thing is
you can choose whether to take a stat point or a perk on your infinite levelling 😀I’m sad because my plan (all Luck and Intelligence) seems to counteract itself a little with perks (well, one perk in particular). May need to switch to something else.
I like the fact that low int builds are actually viable now. Right now on my build I am sitting on 3 int but tempted to just put it down to 1 because you gotta min/max!
I’m curious about the maths (spoilered in case anybody super duper cares about this for some reason?:
Does INT increase the experience you earn, decrease the requirement to level, or add some additional “bonus” experience constantly? And I also need to know the scaling off that luck perk, since it could either decrease levelling speed (relatively) with more intellect, or simply have less of a bonus to levelling speed with more intellect. Also, it’s nice that Charisma has any use whatsoever now.In 3 and NV it only modified the amount of skills points you earned per level. They make it sound like in 4 that it actually modifies the amount of experience you get.
Yeah, which is why it was essential to max it. They’ve removed skills entirely, so far as I’m aware, and now everything is under the perk label, so if I want to MAXIMISE MY POWER I think I’ll have to level up quickly.but you level infinitely now & you can choose a star instead of a perk at level up.You can minmax by grinding
Yeah, it’s more about efficiency of experience. In the big picture it’s not going to make a big difference to about 90% of players. Really only effects those weird people that like to min/max@sernobulos so max int
Depends, if the look at the leaked Luck 5 perk you have a chance to get 3x exp depending on how low your int is when you do anything. Depending on the proc chance having low int may be more efficient.Yeah, without any numbers it’s all just guesswork right now. I believe the they’ve specifically said you will gain bonus exp with int so I assume it’s some kind of % bonus * intelligence. Also, it’s worth keeping in mind that there’s 3 ranks in the Luck perk which means it will either increase the chance of it happening or increase the multiplier. Another thing to keep in mind is that you will need to level to get the perk so you need to take into account the missed exp for the first 3 levels (if you rush it) you lost out on due to low int.I just wish they would give us the specific numbers. =P
got a link to the calculator you’re using?
I’m just listing it on a spreadsheet. Nothing fancy but with a couple of formula’s it does the trick.
@blaghman @bish
my plan atm, is to raise stats only high enough to open access to the perks that make the game play fun for me.Then once I’ve maxed all those, crank stats to open the next most interesting perks. I’ll continue this until I’ve had enough which probably won’t be long enough to open all perks
To be honest, I haven’t really thought about it too much. How SPECIAL affects you in game hasn’t been precisely detailed yet, so for me it’s not much to consider. I like hard numbers and formulae.
I probably won’t go too wild on this first run.
Maybe make an average McGee and try experience the world as it comes.
Next year when all the DLC is out I might revisit the game with a specific character in mind. It’ll help role playing once I know the world a bit more intimately.
A second game? I wish.
Yeah, right now I am going for a stealthy, sniper character. High Percenption, Agility and Luck. Low Strength, Charisma, Endurance and Intelligence.
I just crank up my VATS points & crits.
Also speech skills to amuse & avoid fights.
Maybe probably lock picking too
That’s what my main character has always ended up as for previous games. Though from what I’ve seen of 4 so far, I feel like not making use of power armour/certain loud things will make me feel like I’m missing out.
Me, every single Elder Scrolls game.
“I never use magic/sword-and-board… I should do that.”
*sneaks everywhere and stealth-crit-arrows everything*
Skyrim was the first RPG game in a long time where I went sword and board first up…and it was hilarious. I actually focused on mostly shield and the end result was that if I wasn’t powerbashing for a 1 or 2 hit kill, I was running into a group of enemies and knocking every single one over.
Honestly, shield and magic would be amazing in that game once you have the running knockdown ability.
I think PAX this year has probably been my favourite since it started up. Feels like I got a lot more out of it than I usually do, like actually spending time in the indie section for a change. Plus, got to spend lots and lots and LOTS of time hanging out with everybody before, during and after the event. So many great memories. And any weekend where I spend time with my arms wrapped around @freezespreston is always a good’un.
But now, back to the daily grind.
🙁
not since…the accident!
So many Pants Hugs.
#phrasing
“The best one ever”
Curiously the only one where rockets wasnt present
I see how it is
I SEE WHATS HAPPENING
I KNOW THE CUT OF THIS JIB
I also wasn’t there.
So much makes sense now…
Yeah, well…you know.
I mean, uh…
*leaves*
Of course you can see. We’re not hiding it.
https://twitter.com/redartifice/status/661669218866229249?s=09
You should Fiasco with us next time
Everybody should Fiasco with us. All the time.
Even Giovanni?
Especially Giovanni
Giovanni is pleased, even if hes in jail
What’s a jib?
Its a very bad word.
Also nob are you free on saturday, i feel like we need to head to garden city for ramen and a movie
Sounds good, but only if shouting fruit guy is there.
Ill make some calls
But CJ was there.
Went on an adventure for lunch with a couple of the guys from work. We decided on a place about a 15 minute walk away that was meant to do amazing burgers.
I present to you, the “Blame Canada”.
I live in Canada and I don’t even know where I’d get a burger like that here.
What the hell have I been doing for the past three years of my life.
How’s your waistline feeling?
(The correct response to this is “better than yours, fatty” just in case you were wondering)
Better than yours, fatty.
Better than yours, fatty.
Fatter than yours, Betty.
Betty then yours, Fatter.
fat betty bam ba lamb
Why would you say something so horrible? What’s wrong with you?
I have my reasons.
Jealous Blaghs hasn’t kissed you yet?
It’s a touchy subject for me, yes.
As a vegetarian I have often looked on enviously as someone from our office lunch crew inevitably orders that burger.
Then again, Lord of the Fries is just down the road, so there’s that.
Edit: To be fair, the vego burger at BarLuca is quite excellent, so I can’t really complain.
I would like you to take me there, please.
I would go back there in an instant.
Lets make this happen.
Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.
So I just bought a whole bunch of tiny food storers for board game components.
Don’t cry for me, I’m already dead.
I do this for sewing. They are so handy, but so very expensive.
I bought Home brand ones, 3 packets of like 6 for $6.
You’ve crossed the line into one of those people. *gestures towards @trjn*
That sounds like a compliment to me :p
I gave it neither a positive or negative connotation. Any read into it are results of your own preconceptions.
I’ve only done this twice… so far.
have you looked at brokentoken?
Hah, there’s no way I’m paying that much for a fucking insert.
yeah… I did…
Blahdy hellfire Chris.
Neat freak.
How long before you buy a Monty Haul?
Wedding present I’m sure.
Hahahahaha nooooooooooo $30 I can justify, $2000 nope
One day I will own a Monty Haul.
Or at least a similar knockoff. It’d probably be cheaper to buy all the timber and tools and make one myself than to buy one of them.
I know this was my suggestion… but still feel bad for you man
I realised the ones I’d seen for other games were those little dip/dressing containers for lunchboxes. Might not use them for cosmic, but I reckon they’ll work well for suburbia woody bits. Also got some for cosmic that should fit all of the UFOs and the colour cards, plus some snap seal bags for cards and the like
Plano cases from Big W are pretty rad. Agricola and Village are no longer a pain to set up and I’m sure other games will get added to that list.
Which actually reminds me, @trjn and maybe some miniature enthusiasts like @chuloopa or @f4ction or players of the game like @mad_danny:
I have a terrible addiction to buying Super Dungeon Explore stuff. I’ve got over a hundred little and not so little minis and they’re all stuffed into ziploc bags then packed into the two boxes I have. There has to be a better, safer way to store stuff like this?
Depending on the size of things, either tackle boxes or foam padded carry cases (either way, Bunnings is my go-to place for storage/transport
If you’re willing to spend some time on it foam blocks work. Just buy some 10mm sheets and a reasonably solid box or plastic container. Cut out a base to fit the box and then strips for the dividers. Notch out the dividers so they slot into each other to form a grid, then glue a grid to each base (leaving one extra base). From there you just stack them on top of each other and chuck the blank base on top.
You’ll have to measure it all out but you can get tricky with a hotwire and cut holes in some of the bases to form super cells for the larger models. The stuff also bends relatively easy even though it’s solid once you assemble it. So you can change the spacing on the notches to warp the cells creating slightly bigger and smaller ones when you’ve got that model that’s just a little bulkier than the rest. Again it requires a little extra planning but it’s worth it.
Alternatively you can go berserk with a hot wire cut out silhouettes for perfect fits. Then you take the part you cut out and make a bottom piece so it can sit nice and still. Looking at these models you shouldn’t need to do that, but it’s great for stuff like Warhammer tanks that are a little flimsy.
[Edit: That said if it’s for long term storage or just for your big move your bag solution with a double layer of bubble wrap, layer of models, layer of bubble wrap, layer of models, etc will work fine as long as the box itself doesn’t get crushed. Maybe give things with easily damaged components like staffs, wings and extended swords a sub-box though or plastic container, since stuff is vulnerable to bending and snapping rather than just shock damage. A Vegemite jar or can of coffee/Milo can work nicely as long as there’s enough padding in there to stop it from bouncing around.]
I say embrace it. From an old Lifehacker article, http://www.instructables.com/id/4-DIY-Electronic-Parts-Storage/
You can build a system like that into a draw or hang something similar on the back of a door.
Personally I’d search places like Jaycar, RS Components and Element14 for portable storage boxes. Those aluminium cases with the foam inserts are perfect for letting people know it’s time to stage an intervention. Tool storage systems and tackle boxes can be pretty sweet too. Stanley make some absurd portable toolboxes too.
I use flat tackle/storage boxes from K-Mart. Only between $4-$12 each and the compartments are all sorts of Awesome.
I use them for all my X-wing Needs. They obviously cna’t hold large ships, but all my upgrade crads, stands, tokens, small ships and dice are in those awesome little puppies!
Is it weird that I’m feeling zero hype for any game that’s coming out over the next two months?
As in, I give zero shits about any game being released for the rest of the year.
I just… feel a bit weird now… 🙁
Young man, you will board that Fallout Hypetrain and like it goddammit.
Fallout? Eh.
The series never grabbed my attention in any real way, honestly.
I’ve only put 44 minutes into Fallout: New Vegas, so it’s not that interesting to me…
See, this guy gets the hypetrain: https://twitter.com/redartifice/status/660281764150030336
Nope.
I’ll pick up CoD for something to do and will probably grab the new Need for Speed when it’s cheap. But hype? Nah.
DARK.
SOULS.
3.
I know it’s not this year.
Doesn’t matter.
DARK.
SOULS.
3.
Derk Sheryls Free?
There’s pretty much only one thing left this year I particularly care for (Trails of Cold Steel). A few more I’ll get and play and probably enjoy (Tomb Raider for example) but nothing I’m really hyped for at all.
It happens to all of us
Where did the warm go?
Come back my hands aren’t working.
Is it appropriate to call irony when the guy who ran around mostly naked for a couple days is suddenly feeling cold?
Especially when he is sitting here all rugged up yet still manages to be cold, yes.
Maybe I should go change into my ‘gief gear, and that’ll warm me up.
Did this room just get hotter or is it just me under the collar *fans self*
I do declare I have a case of the vapours.
Cold? It’s raining and i’m sweating like a mofo here. Dang humidity.
I am in need of help everyone. In-ear headphones have never worked for me, but someone just gave me an unused pair of senheisers. Do I need plastic surgery to ensure these things don’t just pop out of my ears every 2 minutes or am I a weird person who has been genetically denied in-ear headphones?
Cyanoacrylate.
Genetically denied.
In all seriousness, if the earbud attachments are the wrong size everything will just slip out, and you should be able to find a multi-set replacement somewhere, the problem is that your ears may well just fall into an awkward size/shape, in which case you’ll be wasting money on something that you can’t really test before you buy.
I can’t stand in-ear headphones like that. They make my ears just tense up constantly, and they always feel like they’re sliding out and it’s totally gross.
Regular earphones pls.
I’m glad I’m not the only one. It feels like I’m pushing earwax in and then my ears get really hot. I don’t want to pass up these headphones but there aren’t a lot of high quality regular headphones anymore.
I can get them to fit, but hate using them. I have 2 pairs of headband ones now (one sport pair for running, one for general use) and I’m much happier.
I’ve long since given up and resigned myself to the fact my ear canals are just not capable of accepting foreign objects. Circumaural suits me best, but they’re a far cry from the portability of intraaural designs.
Sidenote: best handle? Best handle.
Need some of those sweet, cushy rubber ones.
The hard plastic ones always slip out of my greasy, misshapen holes.
I had a pair of these http://www.harveynorman.com.au/sennheiser-mm30i-in-ear-headphones.html?CAWELAID=1642728303&gclid=CNjgj-aB-MgCFYWYvAodtZ8G6Q&gclsrc=aw.ds for ages and they were 100% radical.
I’m rocking some Bose in ear headphones. Love em to bits, literally, hope my warranty is still good. 3 sizes that mold to the ear. So good. In ear or covering my whole ear. Shit that just sits there annoys me.
I am one of those freaks for whom the rubberized in-ear buds fit perfectly on their default ‘medium’ size nubs. But the ones that always, always, always fall out are the standard iphone hardened-plastic in-ear with no rubber attachments.
You may need to experiment.
I’d be very interested to see what a store would say to your dilemma if you straight-up asked them how you can possibly try these out because of the problems you regularly have with sizing.
Well, at least we finally have cricket tomorrow. 😀
You have mentioned trouble sleeping. That should help! :p
Oh, you did not just go there…
You’ve made a powerful enemy…
Cricket!
The cricket added an hour to my commute (because I work at the Gabba).
Fuck the cricket.
Hmm. Hmmmmmm.
Humble Book Bundle currently up has a whole heap of Witchblade and Darkness volumes.
Hmmmmmm.
Or army of darkness if that is your bag
So, I appear to be accumulating one-session/no-prep RPGs.
Anyone want to join in for a one-shot? I’d like to run all of them, only a single night commitment if you want
On the list:
Fiasco (yeah, played it, but come on)
Lasers & Feelings
Lovecraftesque
Microscope
One Last Job
If people are keen for one or all of these, I really want to run them
Lasers & Feelings looks neat. Anything that lets you be a sexy doctor gets my approval.
If you can run a Microscope during a time when I can attend in my Timezone then I’d be up for it again. Or anything else really.
single-session seems far more appealing personally? If there’s space at the table, consider this an expression of interest?
…I think I have commitment issues.
This is my problem, too.
I would be keen for a single shot. I don’t actually know what they are but the two that have been played and posted about seemed fun
You know I’m up for Lovecraftesque
I’d be up for these
I’m happy to fill in a slot for anything.
sounds sus
Lady Blackbird (by the same guy that did Lasers and Feelings) is apparently pretty good in the “everyone is a person on a steampunk airship cruise liner” sense. You should add that to your list of one-shots.
I can jump into one of these sessions if you need more but it sounds like you have plenty of interest.
Fiascoooooo
I was trawling netflix for trashy horror last night.
Stumbled upon Circle first.
Spoilers aren’t really spoilers btw, or at least vague enough to probably not warrant the use of the tags.
Considering my low expectations, I left disappointed because I thought it was half-decent. Gantz-y in presentation and theme, seemingly self aware (more so than other films in the genre I suppose)Then found Advantageous.
Technodystopic late-capitalism future, pretty buildings, heartbreaking themes. It was a different kettle of fish to Circle, but I much preferred it.
Both worthwhile, especially with low expectations, but probably even without.
I had a really shitty migraine yesterday, then some of the guys from work drove me and my car home.
I am never leaving this work, Seriously if i ever get fired they will have to drag me out of here kicking and screaming. This is the best work. The best.
Upvote for work excitement not migraine.
Sounds like you’ve found a pretty awesome place man. well done 🙂
Baw, no Violin Girl on the train this morning 😛
Just bring out the ‘Geif tomorrow, she’ll come running
*fans self*
Sounds erotic.
Wolfenstein finished downloading at 5am this morning. If my girlfriend wasn’t working from home, I probably would have chucked a sickie to play it.
Enh. It’s good – really good. But I don’t think it’s ‘sickie’ good.
Alright so I’m going to try and create an outline for the new visual novel. I’m thinking the first game will be dedicated to anxiety as it’s the only real thing I understand. I’m also thinking it’ll be split up into different scenarios for different variations of anxiety. Are people willing to pitch in and give me ideas and such? Happy to tell me my crap is unrealistic and stuff?
Also working on the bookmarks as well. Because I have no idea how to stop.
My version of anxiety takes place way before events happen. I constantly overthink about how many different ways things are gonna fuck up. During or afterward i am fine but i get quite frightened directly before the thing. I find that people often think its weird that i have anxiety attacks when they dont know me very well because i am a big talker but its there in the background. Thats my version anyway. I know my friend has a different version where he is fine until the actual thing happens and then he shuts down completely.
Maybe switch between characters and explain the different perspectives of the affected person and then the story can culminate in the people meeting 🙂
I was planning on having different characters. Also, it’s from the perspective and choices of the person who doesn’t have anxiety. It’s kind of a “how to” for those who may end up in same situation
I am looking forward to this game that features realistically-rendered poo.
Have someone cook dinner, forget to put the garlic bread in the oven, burn the bottom of the meal they’re cooking while stressing about the garlic bread then end up sitting on the kitchen floor crying.
Uh, happened to… A friend. They’re from…. New Zealand? You wouldn’t know them.
*shifts awkwardly*
I’ve got some paperwork here you can use as a boss battle. I know all the answers but I’m still paralysed by the thought of committing this to official documentation. Seriously considering just crying and begging my accountant to do it for me. =S
That got me thinking. We don’t really explore the stories of people with mental illnesses who have them ‘under control’. Like you’ll read about the daily life of someone with agoraphobia, but it tends to dwell on the ups and downs of someone who can’t function with it. There’s not much about someone who suffers from it but still manages to go to work every day, because at that point it’s (from an outsiders perspective) either cured or just beginning to become agoraphobic.
Might be an interesting take for one of the stories. Someone who has come to understand themselves well enough to function and is doing well from a life check-list perspective, they’ve got a good job, family, etc but continues to struggles with it.
As I said, I’m hoping to make it to help those who don’t suffer from these problems, but may encounter those who have it.
All work and a 5 day wait makes Rize something something.
Lose his trucker hat?
Don’t mind if I god durn done do.
Hour 2 of resolving to cut sugar from my diet for a while: Kill me.
Ok
Make it quick. Hour 3 is nearly here.
I’m all about making it quick.
Sounds erotic.
I eat carrots now
If I used to look like this https://instagram.com/p/9TXZoeMgaT/ then I think you can do it.
See, I did the opposite to you.
HA!
Reposting just in case anyone has suggested tweaks:
THE TONY STARK RUN
High Intelligence, High Charisma. Low Endurance- dude’s got a heart condition, dontcha know?
– Build every weapon you use (IN A CAVE! FROM A BOX OF SCRAPS!)
– Be a charming dick
– Sleep with every female character you can
– prioritise the building of POWER ARMOUR above all else. Especially Power Armour with jetpacks.
– Basebuilding: As much like Avengers Tower as possible
– Sidekicks: Have to look like Gwyneth Paltrow or Don Cheadle, need their own sets of armour
Coming November
#redinthebostonwasteland #StarkRun
Sounds similar to my idea:
THE JIMMY STARK RUN
– Make a character called Jimmy
– Don’t wear any clothes
Based on those requirements why not just call him @mrtaco?
THE FISHGIEF RUN
-Character needs high charisma
-Never, ever wear a shirt
-Craft a fish mask ASAP
– Unarmed combat a priority
Done. That actually fits in pretty close with how I tend to play Fallout.
One punch killing Deathclaws is fun.
THE NED STARK RUN
-Be honourable but with low charisma
-try to do what was right
-Die.As I was typing that comment I considered swapping it to a GoT joke but couldn’t decide which was funnier 😛
Now that’s a method I never thought of with these games, playing as a specific persona.
You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced New Vegas as Forrest Gump.
Characters actively pity how dumb you are.
i know that feel
Isn’t low Int playing the story on hard mode cuz nobody can understand you?
Naw, speech is tied to charisma.
In all seriousness, that’s kinda like the stat distribution I was thinking of going with for my first playthrough. Some things to consider though:
– Is there a minimum/recommended Strength/Endurance for the gear you want to use? I have no clue if they’ve brought across the NV recommended stats thing for gear.
– Are you going to limit yourself to energy weapons/certain energy weapons?
– If there are cybernetics (a la Project Nevada/Old World Blues) you could totally get a shiny new heart!
Energy weapons are a priority, especially as I’ve never really focused on them. Plasm over Lasers, if there’s a difference.
Laser is made of light
Plasma is a state of matter
#Rocketfacts
also also while we are talking plasma, the magnetic containment field for this fusion experiment is fucking amazing
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_confinement_fusion
I meant mechanically a difference in the game, smartarse.
The problem with magnetic bottles is they take usually more energy to create than you (initially) get out of a fusion reaction.
Me a smartarse?
Thats nuts
You have offended me
I am no such thing
The Sun is a Miasma of Incandescent Plasma
Assuming they carry on the differences from previous games, generally speaking laser weapons are faster to fire and use hitscan, but are weaker per hit, whereas plasmas are slower and stronger and have physical projectiles.
I prefer plasmas when using energy weapons (though I’m usually firmly in the Guns camp in Fallout) but laser would probably look more appropriate thematically.
From what has been shown in videos the game doesn’t seem to have strength requirements for weapons.
I think you need STR3 for the armour-mod perks.
And to be fair, if we go by the movies, Tony can sure swing a hammer.
Im still tryna suss out my Mark Wahlberg run “gotta get that Wahlburger donny!”
Hello everyone!
Finally back at work after PAX. Regaling my bosses with my disastrous series of events in Melbourne to hearty laughter (it’s funny now :P)
Thanks again to @scree and @tech_knight for organising the TAY Meat on the Saturday. It was a lot of fun and the venue was pretty ace.
Overall it was a pretty good trip (first day excluded :P). Super tired once I got home though. So much social stuff crammed into those days. I’m not used to going out every single night 😛 Good though.
Also I kinda assumed the Pokemon bug would go away after I was done with my PAX duties, but it’s still nibbling away. Ended up buying Pokemon Y to try a Nuzlocke run through. We’ll see how that goes…
Oh and I bought the new Project Zero (Fatal Frame) once I got home. It’s 2spooky.
Did you test it? I find I get very frustrated with the camera controls and keep confusing the menu and camera buttons. I also keep losing the enemies, so I’ll be glad when I get the seek lens.
Other then that I am really enjoying it. First playable male character that can fight ghosts!
Yup, I played the first two chapters for free and then it tells you to buy that game if you want to continue. Liked it enough to keep going!
Yeah the movement and camera is a bit not great but it helped to crank up the camera sensitivity. Getting the hang of it now.
The previous games have a turn around button. I am missing the fuck out of that button. I move so much slower then the ghosts.
It was also the most expensive venue we’ve booked to date for PAX meats, good to know it wasn’t a waste.
I think it was the perfect venue for what we wanted. You guys did a good job.
How was the travel? Gotta say, despite slumming it up in a hostel, being able to just walk down the road and get there in all of five minutes or so was pretty ace.
It was actually pretty good. The tram that went straight past the apartment went all the way down to the Casino stop. Would’ve been nice to be closer but at least it was just a single tram to get everywhere.
i havent ever done a full nuzlocke, I might see if i can find a old copy of Y and try.
My X Nuzlocke was full of despair. I went into the Elite 4 with only three Pokemon and I had serious issues with the Champion. Thankfully Miltank and calcium beverages saved me.
whitneys Miltank in Silver version is by far the strongest pokemon in any pokemon game.
ROLLOUTS FOR DAYZ
XY is probably the easiest to Nuzlocke because of the variety of types found early on. I’m nicknaming all my Pokemon to sound rich and fancy.
Froakie: Frogsby
Bunnelby: Digglesworth
Pansear: Heatington
Burmy: Bugswell
Farfetch’d: Quackswood
Budew: Roserson
Also I picked the girl trainer this time but her name is still Pow which is a bit strange 😛
Did you soft reset until you got a good froakie pow?????
Normally I would have but this is Nuzlocke! It’s a bad nature or nothing!
I always play females named jimu, no joke 🙂
Funny how I thought PAX would lead to a Pokémon break in our house for at least a few months, instead the urge to play has just continued.
Ooh, there was hilarity?
At the time, no. Now, yes 😛
Do people prefer Tomb Raider reboot or Uncharted?
Was playing the Uncharted demo & felt like it was a series of set prices one after the other, rather than the exploration feel I get from TR. Also, why do people dig Drake? Those wisecracks D:
But yeah, do bits of uncharted feel more exploratory? The demo was I’m a city with a chopper chase & lots & lots of shooting
Fuck off autocorrect
Tomb Raider to Uncharted 2 & 3.
Uncharted 1 to all of the above.
Exploration??
Drake’s alright, but Sully’s where it’s at.
Sughly? :p
Sweatin’ like a damn hooker in church!
I prefer the Uncharted games (except 3) but that’s not saying anything bad about Tomb Raider. Uncharted has a bit more spirit of fun to it and occasionally acknowledges how ridiculous it is. Tomb Raider took itself way too seriously and got a touch overwrought at times.
Right, I’m looking at it from gameplay perspective. I liked the overall story from TR, the supernatural stuff was cool. But the drama was…well it did the job I guess.
I think I will eventually grab the Uncharted HD collection, once there’s a gap between all the RPGs I must own.
I love that Tomb Raider inspired Uncharted and Uncharted inspired the new Tomb Raider and the new Tomb Raider seems to be inspiring Uncharted 4. (Climbing hook, more open environments, etc.) Don’t make me choose. Love the cinematic story telling and character of the Uncharted games, but prefer the gameplay of Tomb Raider even if it’s a bit more ‘gamey’…
I love gamey.
But noones answered my other question, outside the chasin n shootin, does Unch get more exploratory at all?
Yeah, there’s usually substantial sections of the game with down time and puzzle rooms and the like. Game leans more to the shooty side of things, but it’s definitely there. 🙂 That demo showcases a huge actiony set piece. There’s more puzzles in the sequels than first game.
Tomb Raider has way more exploration, though.
Yeah & you’re gonna revive them!!!
U2 > TR > U1 >>>>> U3 for me
U2 make terrible music, speaking of, start me a grunge band in Seattle!
Seattle grunge bands are a bit 1995 dude.
I’ve been replaying The Walking Dead s2 on the PS4. Absolutely loved it the first time around, but really digging playing the eps back to back this time. Has a better sense of cohesiveness. Bring on the Michonne mini-series. 🙂
Still have to get around to playing season 2, might hold off till just before the first episode of season 3 drops.
From what I hear the Michonne mini-series is pretty soon, but I don’t think it will connect back to the season 1 and 2 arcs. 🙂
Had to look up who that was, because as I said the other day I’ve only watched the first two seasons.
Remember seeing her at the end of season 2 with the chained “walkers” and being really interested in seeing her part of the story.Kinda been holding off watching season 3 because I don’t have seasons 4 and 5 and I don’t wanna be left hanging.
Reckon I’ll finally pick up 4 and 5 when I go out later to pick up the Doctor Who level pack for Lego Dimensions.
Walking Dead marathon! Hooray! Don’t forget there’s a spin off too now. Fear the Walking Dead.
Yeah, I know. Just checked JB and it’s not out on DVD till March next year. Oh well, I didn’t want to start on that until I caught up on the main series anyway.
Also makes me think of that other spin-off series I haven’t gotten around to yet, Better Call Saul.
Played 1 on vita then bought the lot for $50 on ps4. Had to restart my WD1 to carry my choices over(I must!) & not digging it nearly as much after playing JP, Wolf & especially Borderlands.
Still good, just taking me a lot longer this time
I feel like you’ve got to want to replay and when you’re forced to do it out of having no save game you can start to resent the game. Haha! 🙂
Nah, I was keen until maybe the end of ep1 & I lost all steam.
Blame Tales of the Borderlands. The best Tales game ever
@doc_what @negativezero
I absolutely LOVED Tales from the Borderlands and Wolf Among Us but The Walking Dead games are still my favourite. (Felt like Borderlands was a bit more on rails than The Walking Dead, even if it was just the illusion of more freedom there.)
I thought everything about Tales was done better. Maybe not the choices so much but it still made me feel a range of emotion while having the best visuals & music.
Those introductory scenes set to a kind of pop music I generally don’t care for were amazing, sent chills down my spine.
How great was that season finale too? Felt so much love for all the characters! 🙂
Yep, it all came together so well!
I loved those sequences, too.
Sew gud
Just got sent this in a kickstarter update. People love to shit on Sixense and STEM for how long it’s taken and everything, but I’m still hyped. And even moreso now.
Finished Tales from the Borderlands last night, and will have fond memories of it for the rest of my life.
I’m still amazed that they managed to make a QTE boss fight in an adventure game be so much fun. On paper it sounds like a terrible idea, but it worked really well (possibly helped along by the overt Power Rangers reference 😛 )Now the real question is, do I move on to a different game or do I go play it again? Because for the first time in a long time I’m keen to replay a whole game with different decisions just to see how things work out. For example:
I’m interested to see what happens if I reject Jack the whole time rather than generally always following his suggestions. Also interested to reject Hyperion ASAP rather than letting Rhys hopelessly cling to his dream, and instead push him towards Sasha (which in my playthrough would not have made much sense despite it apparently letting me do it)Or, I could just be making excuses and want to go hang out with the greatest character in the Borderlands universe:
Gortys! AAAAAHH! SO CUTE!Oh yeah, I should probably play chapter 4 and 5 😛
Oh yeah, I should probably download that.
I don’t know what’s worse…you not even downloading it…or me having downloaded it day 1 and never touching it…
If you play through at least the first 2 episodes, I’ll let you pick which game I play next.
From a pre-defined list.
That will have 3 games on it.
…two of which are Telltale ones.
Train Simulator
Next Telltale game confirmed?
I was skeptical there was much they could do with Borderlands that didn’t involve shooting a tonne of people, and even more skeptical about Minecraft ‘story mode’, and they’ve pulled both off pretty well… if anyone could do Train Simulator, it’s Telltale.
I bought it when it was on sale but all the episodes weren’t out and I don’t play episodic games until they’re fully released.
I played Ep1 on release and loved it, and then just took way too long bothering to go play more. I think part of the issue is that I don’t work well with episodic content.
You should go finish it, it’s totally worth it.
I know what you mean. Usually I’ll play the first episode or two, then just stop playing until all the episodes are out beacause I hate being left hanging for months. I much prefer to marathon things.
Episodic content would be much better If they released an episode with 3-5 hours of playtime every 1 or 2 weeks, but what’re the chances of that happening.
My favourite character on this has to be
Loader Bot, he’s the best bro in the entire game, and every time he suddenly goes “Hi” I just giggle with glee, MVP of the series hands downOh, he’s brilliant and would be top of the list if not for Gortys. Honestly though, all the characters played their parts really well. Such a great experience 😀I can’t be sure, but because Telltale, I’m assuming that things go largely the same way. As much as I’d like to test that hypothesis, I don’t want to ruin the magic.
Seems I made the choices you didn’t
Spoilered due to wall of text.
Well what an interesting week it’s been. Started out feeling more normal physically, than the previous 2 weeks, but still struggling a bit mentally (confusion/forgetfulness etc,) But seems to have improved over the course of the week. Still a little disoriented at times, but not as often as before.
Then on Wednesday I got back from my break at work, and I was burning like hellfire inside. Felt like my blood was boiling, and had burning sensation in my fingers/toes/pretty much everywhere, and my heart was racing. Lasted about an hour or 2, then went away like nothing ever happened. I’ve experienced this before in my life, but never quite as intense as it was that day. a few hours later, I started to get a big attack of these weird pains in my head which I get from time to time, but have never been attributed to a particular cause, nor have any doctor’s been able to find a solution for it thus far (been seeing doc’s on and off about it since my mid-late teens). They make me wince as the pain is so intense, but only lasts for a few seconds at a time, but will randomly happen at intervals for a period of anywhere from 10 mins to several days.
Was chatting to a doctor friend of mine last night, as the burning and head pains happened yesterday as well, and they suggested it might be worth getting checked to see if I have Porphyria. Apparently very rare, and often genetic, but worth looking in to as it can lead to weakened muscles (among a slew other things), which can then lead on to quadriplegia/paralysis or something? (I’m guessing that’s extreme cases but perhaps our resident Dr @freya can confirm/clarify?
So I go to the GP I’ve been seeing about this, and relayed the suggestion, only to (unsurprisingly) be met with a comment of “Don’t worry about what other people say. It’s very rare”.
I told him I was aware it was rare, but given that I take Tegretol for reducing my migraines (it’s an anti-convulsant/anti-epileptic drug) and that all this started to surface after I took an antidiaretic (sp?) after I got the runs all those weeks ago, it was like a light bulb went off in his head. He all of a sudden went from being a bit dismissive, to madly typing up notes.
Anyway, so now I’m off for round 3 of tests. In some ways I’d be glad if they did identify it as being Porphyria, as it would go a long way toward explaining some of the random ongoing pain issue’s I’ve had throughout my life, Having said that, it’s not really something I like the idea of having to deal with for the rest of my life, but I guess any answer is better than none right?
sounds like a big roller coaster man, but it’s good that it seems to be going somewhere!
indeed. any kind of direction is better than years and years of searching, only to have them shrug their shoulders and move you on.
Hope they get it diagnosed quickly so it can be treated and improve your quality of life, friend.
All things considered, my quality of life isn’t all that bad. I’ve had these random pain issues for almost as long as I can remember, so I’ve accepted that it’s something I have to deal with, and thankfully doesn’t bother me every day, but just lately everything seems to have hit at once, and all in a chain reaction, starting with taking magnesium to help relieve muscle pain (that’s what gave me the runs, causing the dehydtration, then the antidiaretic added to the mix and it all just went down from there :\
Bit of bad timing followed by a series of treatments that helped, but created/revealed more problems! At least I don’t wake up feeling like I’m 80yrs old any more. I have most of my energy back, and the mental cloudiness is slowly clearing, but it would be heavenly to think that I could be free of issues for a while (or at least be able to manage them effectively)
As someone who essentially had one headache that lasted 20 years I can say you probably don’t realise what a difference getting something like this under control will make. You get used to this crap, especially when it comes on gradually over years. I was aware that I had some really bad, abnormal headaches but I was so used to the constant pain that it never quite registered that my idea of normal was so far off.
The best way I can describe it is you know when Goku was training with King Kai, and then he finished and was like ‘oh shit, I forgot King Kai’s planet had crazy strong gravity’. Not being in pain and being able to think clearly was like that.
It’ll suck if you have Porphyria but confirming it will provide the chance to attack it properly rather than swatting at the symptoms. There might not be a magic cure but you’ll definitely have better results.
This is all I can hope for. After spending so long trying to tackle my migraine’s, and having no luck, it was such a blessing to finally find something that helped. I used to get 2-4 migraines a week, but after a neurologist put me on to tegretol for a couple of months, I generally only get one a month now! Doubt I’ll ever be free of them, but not having to worry every single day that I would wake up with one is a huge load off my body and mind.
I took these choices hits weird, I’m always all sorts of sick & sometimes I wish they would diagnose me with something serious & treatable rather than just having to put up with feeling crap all the time.
Never Happens, I be always just got a bit of nothing particularly serious which isn’t treatable, I just have to put up with it & go back to work.
My lungs remain in pain whenever it’s cold or I catch something ‘just asthma’ I take all the drugs, which help but it doesn’t go away.
I know what ya mean man. It took me 7 odd years to find a ‘solution’ to my migraines. I say that, cos I’m not completely rid of them, but drastically reduced the amount I get thankfully!
So this “new” work laptop has a fancy touch screen and runs Windows 8.1.
All of a sudden I’m realising I was a little misguided in heaping shit on the new (now old) Metro start menu – it actually works a damn treat with touch enabled and firing up frequently used apps is a breeze. It’s still stupid if you’re only using a mouse though.
That being said it still feels completely foreign to use keyboard, touch and mouse on/off all day.
I still hate windows 8, hate touchscreens too.
#oldmanmonkey
have you tried 10?
Nah, worried I’ll hate it even more than 8.
It’s awesome. If you disregard the part about Microsoft allegedly watching what you do even if you turn all that stuff off lol. Then again I never touched 8/8.1
I’m not a fan of touch screens for everyday usage – right now I’m using it in 2 instances – starting frequently used apps – hit windows key, tap large icon on screen, drops back to desktop app open. Getting around PDFs – pinch to zoom and swipe to move feels so much more natural than using the mouse.
Also – you should really try 10. Personally think it’s the best iteration of Windows yet. Everything about it is built for speed and ease of use – search functions, notifications, new settings space.
Welcome to the wonderful world of being forced to defend Windows 8/10. Be prepared to sigh and say ‘it’s actually better if you give it a chance’ or ‘yeah Microsoft are terrible, but this is good’ a lot.
@batguy @cookingmama A few of the leaders over on the PAX Pokemon League forum are buzzing saying that “the youngster and his Audino mummy” left quite an impression on them at PAX! You’ve been mentioned a few times now, everybody loved you guys haha They all really enjoyed Batboy’s enthusiasm.
Collecting badges really was one of the best bits of PAX for us. I wasn’t sure how he was going to to, given that we had a very underpowered team, and that, being 4, he’s quite prone to bursting into tears when things don’t go the way he wanted. I was very proud that he did almost all the battling by himself, and kept smiling even when he lost. The costumes were fabulous, the battles were fun and everyone was super friendly. Has me thinking that being a Gym Leader is something for future PAX.
Do you mind if I share this comment with the other leaders over on the forum? They’d love to hear it!
Sure 🙂
Just been browsing TV shows on the Playstation store and I stumbled across a show called Z Nation, a blatant rip-off of The Walking Dead by the looks of it. Looked it up on Wikipedia and it’s produced by the same company that gave us Sharknado and Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus, so it’s obviously low budget, but apparently one of the guest stars in one of the episodes is George R. R. Martin as “George R. R. Martin Zombie”. Kinda wanna watch it now, if only for that.
I’ve never watched the show, but I’ve seen what I can only assume is the whole joke with his cameo as part of a commercial on Foxtel. Meh.Rings Bought!
We swears to serve the master of the precious *gollum gollum*
Ahh the smell of WD40, fragrance for robots 😀
Not as a lubricant… you didn’t did you?
it helps the joints in both moving and smelling nice!
It does… for a time.
WD40 isn’t actually a lubricant. WD = Water Displacement. The film that’s left once it’s dried is to repel water and not lubricate. It tends to dry/gum up after a while.
So if something needs to be loosened, give it a hit of WD40 to get it moving. Once it’s dried out use a proper lubricant – silicone, teflon or graphite – to keep it smooth.
I love you so much, i was about to post the same thing before you did.
I learnt the hard way when I destroyed the chain on my bike when I was 14. I’d seen my dad using it on his motorbike chain and went all my-dad-knows-everything!!! *starry eyed teenager*. What I wasn’t seeing was him giving his chain a full clean and lube several hours later.
i use it for cleaning parts but thats it. great for cleaning
Slowly getting up my NaNoWriMo wordcount after starting a few days late. I’m still not where the stats on the site say I should be at the moment, but I’m nearly there. I ended up sort of restarting after writing the first chapter (which was 2500 or so words). Decided to take the story in a bit of a different direction so I wrote another chapter one. I’m keeping the old one there though just for the wordcount.
Also finished playing the final episode of Tales From the Borderlands last night. I really liked it. A really strong finish for the game that tied together everything nicely. I’m looking forward to how Borderlands story unfolds after this, so hopefully we get a Borderlands 3 soon. A second season of Tales should also happen.
Think the important part of NaNoWriMo is to do it at your own pace. Estimated wordcounts are a useful marker but some people do more at the start, others do more at the end.
I’m watching the final episode of Mad Men tonight. I’m beyond hype for it.
Who here’s a Mad Men aficionado?
@dc and @sughly if memory serves… anyone else?
We’ll compare notes after. 🙂
I still haven’t watched the last half-season because the DVDs are taking way too long to come out :[
They’re out! They officially released today, but JB had them on the shelves on Tuesday!
!!!
WHAT
But I checked on their website and everything!
Aw man, it is! https://www.jbhifi.com.au/movies-tv-shows/movies-tv-shows-on-sale/tv-drama/mad-men-season-7-part-2/802238/ Didn’t show up in the regular search for some reason.
I must complete my cool-cover set!
(slightly disappointed they re-used Don for the cover, though I understand why. Was hoping for a Sally cover or something :P)
Sally’s had a lot of screen-time in seasons 6 and 7 too, so it would have been cool to see that!
One of the many shows on my ever growing list of shows to watch that I never seem to get around to.
Still only up to episode 6 of season 1 of Sons Of Anarchy, and I’ve got the first 5 seasons on DVD.
The first four seasons of SoA are pretty amazing. Sadly, the quality dips pretty sharply after that, though. I posted a rant about the last season on Twitter earlier this week, but deleted it because of potential spoilers.
Fair enough. Good thing I’m not on twitter anymore then.
Oh good, glad to hear I am not alone. It was okay, but didn’t think that highly of it. Much like how I felt about Breaking Bad.
Also please tell me i’m not alone with how obvious it was going to end with Jax was? I swear that was set up back around season 2 maybe even end of 1.Aaaach, most of the last sixteen – and ALL of the last nine eps – of Breaking Bad were so disappointing to me.
Yeah I was a bit “eh” by the end. Especially just how much violence was there, kinda got stale fast for me.
Tornado warning for Melbourne… Well that’s a new one
RUH ROH!
I was out walking about 30 minutes ago… In full sun shine…
D’oh!
thankfully I didn’t see hail, otherwise that would’ve been costly for the CBD
You mean that storm that passed through the city like a bloody plane?! It’s sunny again!
http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDV65752.shtml
Eeeyup!
Hm.. hopefully my undercover washing will be okay :/
Edit: It’s in a corner closest to a concrete wall and my back screen door, so should be fine
It’s not really that new. Melbourne has been full of blowhards for decades.
HAH!
Did anyone else spot Vector 36 at PAX?
I know Freeze, Cracks and myself had a crack (hurr) at it, and I’m pretty sure the verdict was unanimously, overwhelmingly positive.
Think Star Wars Episode One: Racer, only like… physics based? Conservation of momentum felt great through the corners, and while I only had ~10 minutes with it, I loved it. Apparently the customisation side of things is super in-depth too, which I’m really keen to check out.
ALSO thank you so much Cracks (@cracks @thecracks @the_cracks?) for gifting it to me, you’re a champion.
As an aside, *if* anyone spotted it and subsequently bought it, have you managed to download/install/run it at all? It seems that I’m only downloading about a third of the required files, which isn’t entirely conducive to a functional experience whatsoever.
I’ve spoken to the dev over facebook so they’re looking into it, but I’m curious as to what others’ experiences may have been with it so far?
I tried it, I was awful at it
Misread this as “tried, it was awful”.
You’re the worst, Red.
At Vector36? Yes.
I beat Freeze’s time on my first go. His tears were delicious.
I went back and beat it.
I didn’t. I crashed a few times then didn’t want to tie it up too much and just took comfort in the fact that I won a shirt. An incredibly tearstained shirt from a hollow victory.I like the edit.
You had me at Episode 1: Racer!
Added to my ever growing wish-list as money is currently
non-existenta bit low after PAX 😛Sorry
Don’t, would rather have gone to PAX then not at all, plus I had a whale of a time! 😀
And you got exploding kittens!
\o/ NO REGRETS 😀
Did you get the NSFW edition? It’s quite excellent.
Maybe
Yes!Whale Boner Tetherball FTW 😛
Well that’s easily fixed.
This is all @scree’s fault.
I’m sorry. D=
No no no no that’s not what i meant! 😛
But thank you mang! You’re way to generous!
;_;
Dammit. That’s what I was about to do.
@scree’s fault.
Where is the bawling emoji?
I… saw it, but don’t remember which one it was. And didn’t get to play it because there was a crowd and I was asleep on my feet.
People talking about boxes for storing game stuff:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/218332
My ScribbleTaku was doing so well too :'(
I’ll have to make a harder one >:)
There, there. You know the pain Mark feels on a near-daily basis, now.
So Bunnings now allows you take your dog in to their stores nationwide apparently. I can see this having mixed results. Guess I can venture in to Bunnings with Chilli next time i’m at Petbarn with her.
@scree thought you’d like to know this!
I know, cool dog group was super excited about it!
@dc, I watched it.
It was harrowing and intense, but amazing.
I don’t even know where to begin talking about it. I’ve been turning it over and over in my mind for hours, and the number of loose threads and long-term character arcs that were tied up in just that one episode is beyond staggering. It really got to me, though, in quite a few different scenes. The refrigerator guy’s monologue was spellbinding, and way too real.Mad Men finale spoilers:
If you’re any thing like me you will have that Coke jingle in your head for mooooonths. Loved the finale. Such a great season too. I thought the Peggy ending was a bit forced, but otherwise? Brilliant! Felt so sad for Betty, but absolutely loved the evolution of her relationship with Sally. So much depth there.Yes, BUT:
I contend that this was deliberate. The Stan/Peggy scene was meant to be way too sappy and over-the-top. Here’s why I think that’s the case. Peggy has had a very cynical love history so far. Knocked up by Campbell, and then a semi-steady progression of detached and self-involved jerks. She, as Don’s protege, bought into what Don said in the pilot: “Love is something invented by us.” Her brief dalliance into romantic-comedy, her Hallmark Card moment, her sudden ability to (re)define love into something meaningful for her was exactly what she was missing in her life. (Also, that relationship has been TELEGRAPHED for years, so its existence is definitely not a surprise.)And while we’re getting into the deeper analysis, isn’t it just glorious that Don’s ‘breakthrough’ moment (fleeting though it was) came from someone else’s mouth? He’s the man with all the answers, the smooth tongue, the compelling monologues, the man who “understands how people work”, but this other guy’s words about loneliness are the only words that get through to Don, the words he’s been unable to find to describe himself and how he feels. And while we’re on Don, do you remember Ted saying that there are three women in every man’s life? Don made three calls in that episode: Sally, who rejected him; Betty, who really rejected him; and Peggy, who told (practically begged) him to “come home.” Is it any wonder that he went back to McCann? It’s the only home he has left (remember the burger joint he ate a ‘family’ meal at with Peggy and Campbell?), and the only thing he’s ever been good at.Every one of the characters got what they were missing in their lives.Pete Campbell, a lifelong mediocrity (who’s never been told someone was proud to work with him) gets a corporate jet, becomes a high-flying executive (literally, I guess, if you figure the plane as symbolic), and finally achieves a little internal peace.Joan finally managed to carve out a piece of the professional world that is just for her, that no one can take from her (as evidenced by both of her names being used in the business name). And she’s getting there with hard work that has nothing to do with her being a woman, which is what she wanted all along.Betty, eternal hypochondriac, got terminal lung cancer. From the very products that Don was advertising in the pilot.Roger finally sorted out all his issues with his ‘legacy’.It might all be wrapped up a little neatly, but damn if it didn’t do such an incredible job fitting so much into just that 50 minutes. I was utterly mesmerised the entire time.EDIT:
Apparently that coke jingle is a real ad, made by the real McCann agency. Some ad guy called Bill B_____ (I forget his surname), apparently. Alliteration clue? Real-life inspiration for Don Draper? Wonder if this was always the endgame they had in mind? Don uses his new bright outlook on life to shun the cynical “It’s toasted” deceptions, and writes a “buy the world a drink” jingle for the most successful Coke ad of all time?I might be overthinking it all, but I reckon everything I’ve noted was deliberately staged, and planned well in advance to work out exactly this way.
Can’t sleep..Clown (which is a metaphor for my personal life problems, worry of bills, fear of having nothing to show for my life at 24) will eat me.
You should bring Moni and come hang out with Tiglet and I
I completely understand that feeling. While I am not there at the moment, a few months ago I so was.
Sleep is important though. I found that listening to podcasts, or youtube videos, helped me sleep without allowing my brain to do the thinking thing.
So I’m busy meticulously crafting a resume and cover letter/s and I was wondering if any of you people with jobs could give me a bit of advice.
Is it acceptable or not to apply for two jobs within the same company? This one place that I know quite well and have met most of the managers and that there has a few positions vacant and I want to try my hardest to get my foot in the door there, and two positions would be good for me: associate consultant and junior tester. The first one takes priority for me, but nevertheless is it okay to apply for both or would that look bad or make me seem too unsure about what I want to do?
are both jobs under the same department? what is the business structure like?
I would say that when I have applied for multiple jobs in one department I’ve never got a call back.
but I might not have been any good
The business structure is pretty flat, and there’s just the one guy that handles all interviews. It’s not a huge company but it’s rapidly expanding after they were bought out last year and operate now under a multinational banner.
I think, unfortunately, you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. You might be able to get away with it through an incredibly well-crafted cover letter but honestly I think applying for both will give the company a negative view of you.
Best thing I can recommend, if you’re on good terms with some people that work there you should talk to them about it, assuming this won’t cause any issues with that/those relationships.
Much, much better to pick the one you think you’re most likely to get, and go for that one hammer and tongs… and then move laterally within the company at a later date!
If the jobs are within the same department, apply for the one you want more (the associate one). I’m guessing the other one is more junior? I’ve had interviews before where they said ‘Sorry, you’re not quite qualified enough for so and so, but we do have this other available position’.
If they are in different departments, then go for gold. It’s astounding how little communication there is between departments in some companies.
Depending on how is doing the hiring. If they are large enough to have HR then it probably all runs through there
Yeah, I had a whole rambling reply that went way off-topic, which I (obviously) ended up deleting.
tl;dr If the contact is the same for both positions, just apply for the more senior / preferred one. If you aren’t suitable for that, but they think you’d be right for the other position, they (generally) will let you know. I know our company has done this a few time – people have applied for senior positions that they aren’t qualified for, and have ended up taking junior positions that we have available.
I think it comes down to how confident you feel in either interview? Applying for both jobs can be pulled off if you address it appropriately within your cover letter and your initial interviews. Basically translate it into confidence that you feel you have the skillset for both roles and while you normally would never apply for 2 jobs within a single company your passion for this firm made you feel an exception was warranted in this instance.
I think the problem with that is there seems to be a senior and junior position. So applying for both makes you seem like you have no confidence in the senior position but that you are over qualified and looking to move beyond the junior position.
If it was two jobs at the same level that can work, however at different levels I wouldn’t recommend applying for both
It is totally acceptable to apply for multiple jobs.
Something you may even find is that if a company likes you and how you interview, they may not even necessarily give you the job you applied for but ask you if you’d be interested trying something else they have an opening for.
I think they’d just consider it a positive that you want to work there, and this really makes it about the place, not the role. Being flexible is a plus.
Hmm I think I’ll just apply for the one and see how it goes from there, and if that doesn’t work out I’ll try for the junior one or something.
Thanks for all the advice guys 🙂
When you submit, ring up and say I am applying for this one, but I’d also welcome consideration for the other. Have it both ways.
Happy birthday @thecracks!
I’d do a birthday strip tease for you but it’s already too late, you’ve seen everything.
Thanks Freezey.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CRACKALACKA
seriously have a wonderul birthday, you are a awesome dude. 🙂
Thanks Rocketbuddy!
Happy Birthday! I’m sorry I forgot who you were on the Sunday. I owe you a Link bookmark.
On that subject, thank you again for those. Tiglet really likes them.
I can’t apologise to this! You’re welcome.
Thanks Scree!
Yes Mrs Smiiiiiiiiiithe.
😉
Happy birthday! I hope you eat lots of cake!
Lots of cheesecake and a heap of chocolate fudge a colleague made for me ^_^
Yay!
Cracky Birthday!
Thanks Rize!
Happy Birthday @thecracks, I hope you birthday is almost as good as mine
Thank you, Tigs!
Happy birthday Sadie. Still in the prime of your youth.
Yeeesssss…
Happy Birthday!!!!
Ta muchly.
Happy womb exodus day dude!
Didn’t really get a chance to talk a lot to you at the meat (damn social awkwardness) but you seemed cool 😛
Oh, I am cool.
I think…
Thanks dude!
Finally I’m progressing through Act 2 on Guild of Dungeoneering, and it was all cuz I’m now 100% sticking with my tier 2 character, the Barbarian! Bloody hell the difficulty ramps up quickly, I guess I really need to start noting down who is good against what enemy
I stuck with the ranger for most of the game (until I unlocked tier 3). I find the quick attacks just make him way too powerful.
Barbarian is hilarious, lots of high damage abilities that cost 1 hp to pull off, then I can just use Withstand when I’m about to die then use more high damage/-1hp moves to smash to victory.
Last night i bought a 2 wheeled balancing scooter from alibaba, i havent ever bought anything from alibaba before but i thought i would much prefer to spend $200 than $800 plus doing some research only 3 companies manufacture these things and they are all in China so i dont think any are using more high quality parts than the others and if worst comes to worst i can fix up the dodgy electronics myself. I am genuinely excited about having something to hack around with since i finished my microcontroller.
I’ve been pushing myself to finish off a bunch of games in my Steam library that I haven’t touched in ages (before I lose my life to Fallout 4).
Jumped into Battleblock Theatre last night and knocked off a bunch of levels. It really is a fun little game with some AMAZING voice acting…especially when you find a secret level… 😀
The secret level music is amazing.
… We should Co op that again!
Everyone should co op it again!
Soooooooo… Tonight? 😛
Possibly? I don’t know if I’m doing a family thing tonight or not yet. Will let you know!
Had a quick chance to try out Vector 36 last night (thaaaaaanks Freeeeeeezey!)
And oh my God it’s addictive!
Completely screwed my first skimmer due to putting the thrusters in stupid spots causing it to lose balance and spin like a top 😛
Second setup worked much better but I still need to learn to fly that thing! Good fun!
I’m so going to get that game…just not sure when. Might let it mature a little more first.
How many people can fit in one race?
Max I’ve seen is 8 racers all up, but yeah definitely let it mature because I don’t think multiplayer is implemented yet
Why can’t today go quicker? 🙁
because we are moving at a constant velocity that makes time pass at a near constant rate.
HANG IN THERE BUDDY, only a few hours left
First you school us on Plasma, now you’re making a relativity joke.
ROCKETMAN = ROCKET PHYSICS I GET IT NOW
Rocketman, or Rocketscientist?
im working on a design for a hoverboard too. Im just gonna tape some magnets to a skateboard
or just over 20% of a full rotation of the planet to go.
Do something really fun! That’ll make the time utterly disappear.
Yay!!
They Might Be Giants tonight at the Enmore!
I dunno, if they actually are giants will they fit into the theatre?
Maybe they should be called “Schrödinger’s giants”
*might not actually be giants
We’re Certainly Dwarfs.
…
And only now do I get that reference.
Hmm. A friend of mine asked me if I was interested in joining as a partner in his business to replace someone else leaving. I have to admit that I’m tempted to give it a go but $6,000 is a fair chunk of money to invest into a business that is barely profitable. The business is an online retailer for board games of which I have very limited knowledge of board games and it’s mostly my friend and his wife running things. Still tossing it over in my head but I don’t think I’ll jump into business just yet.
I can’t say if you should or shouldn’t go for it but I can suggest that if you do want to go ahead with it, take the time and money to get an important-looking third party law type person to draw the contract for you. Don’t ever, ever go into an agreement like that without some solid protection for both parties.
If I could upvote this four more times I would. Also you need to be crystal about whther you’re a full partner, silent partner, and what director responsibilities you would have (actual legal repercussions here)
The option is a partner of a partnership so I’m already a bit hesitant as there are far less financial safeguards on a personal level compared to being a director of a company. I’m probably more savvy with legal requirements than my friend so I would certainly review everything before signing on the dotted line.
If you’re investing in a friend’s business especially, you need to treat that money as throw away cash. If you’re happy to spend that much and maaaaaaybeeee get a return on it, go for it, but if it doesn’t come back you have to be able to write it off.
FWIW, as a board game site, prices seem OK but not stellar.
Yeah I’ve heard stuff about the pricing. Apparently South-East Queensland gets screwed over as the main distributor for board games also runs their own retail operation. They are nominally separate but the retail store has access to more stock and (supposedly) better prices. Plus apparently there is a bias that as a non-physical store is more risky than bricks-and-mortar so they had to smooth things out with the suppliers. It certainly doesn’t sound easy.
OK-but-not-stellar can get you around a bunch of things if your service is good. Really depends on the existing financials.
I could ramble a bit here but this is a pretty crowded space right now.
Australian retailers have a minor local advantage because Amazon won’t ship most games here. However there’s already a range of established retailers.
And yeah, relying on Good Games for distribution is something most stores have to worry about. I think there are a handful of stores that have established their own supply network but there aren’t many.
Good luck if you do decide to go ahead! I highly recommend finding out the level of commitment expected from you should you decide to partner up (both financial and time oriented). Following which multiply that commitment by about 50% and ask yourself if you can wear that added fiscal and time oriented responsibility.
As with any business venture I do advise going into it for the monetary return, so ask yourself what you expect as returns with the money you are going to contribute as capital to the business. What happens if you don’t receive your expected returns and finally and most importantly in my opinion with regards to any investment. Never ever invest money you aren’t willing to lose completely. This will provide you with the emotional distance you need in order to judge if the investment is worth holding on to or selling out of.
Given this is a partnership situation; what forms of exit are available if any should you wish to pull out of the agreement? Can your partner afford to reimburse you for your share of the capital investment? Given this is a start up for a niche economy what level of contribution to the direction of the company will you be able to make? Do you see potential for improvement or growth should you invest? Can you bring something to the partnership that can affect change in the medium-long term future? What level of strain do you believe your relationship with your partner can endure? This is extremely critical because once livelihood’s become involved things can become very personal very quickly.
(forgive the erratic nature of the post; at work but wanted to put some thoughts out there for you to consider before looking at a business partnership)
I was only offered a partner role as one of the current partners was leaving and they needed someone to pay them out. Their alternative was to get a business loan which they could do but the interest and repayments would dint their profitability. None of the current partners are running this business as their primary occupation as it’s more of an on-the-side hobby job so I don’t think it would be too stressful if I joined up.
The more I think about it though, the more I’m kinda meh at the whole thing. I’m a tightarse by nature and I’m sure I’ll butt heads with my friend who is far more free with spending money. It’s definitely not worth ruining a friendship over money, especially when the RoI is so minimal at the moment and profit potential is pretty low (as you said, it is a niche market). Thanks for your thoughts Puppet.
All good =] *flexes financial knowledge muscles* It sounds like your friends run this store as a point of primary income; what kind of historical return did their previous partner get for his/her investment?
I say this to anyone I speak to looking to invest in anything; a good investment is like a good gym routine or a good diet. It all comes down to the level of comfort you feel with the plan; if you like the idea you are more likely to endure any pitfalls and moments of weakness and see the plan through till the end. If you’re uneasy to start with; then it’s not about to get any easier! In effect “if you don’t know then it’s a no”.
P.S. A bonus benefit to investing what you aren’t afraid to lose is it puts less strain on a relationship if you aren’t stressed about what’s going to happen with the money. Just some food for thought!
Edit: A bank loan is a dint in their profitability but having an added partner should also be a dint; after all they should be returning your investment to you in either equity or income over time.
The store only started up last year so there were a lot of commencement costs but I think the exiting partner may have walked away with about $500-$1,000 in addition to their initial investment after the partnership profit distribution. I haven’t asked for any details yet nor have I looked at their financials (haven’t pried into it before now) but it has always looked like a very slow-growth business. My friend and his wife do a lot of spruiking at various board gaming events and I am generally pretty lazy regarding all of that extra work. I’m an accountant by trade so if I did join I would be happy to review the financial reports and ensure that cash flows were good, inventory turnover was good, etc.
The invitation was an off-the-cuff thing but I’ll definitely look into it before I make a decision.
Finally got around to buying Saints Row IV: Re-elected. Thought why not with the PS+ double discounts sale, can’t remember the exact price, but I think was somewhere in the range of $15-$20.
Only played for about 20 minutes, but so far I’m disappointed. For starters they ripped off Far Cry: Blood Dragon with the intro (it was cool in FC:BD, but SRIV came out after so they’re just lame copycats). Also, my initial fears when they first announced the game have been confirmed, it just doesn’t feel like Saints Row anymore, it may well be a fun game, but I stick by the statement I made a few years ago that it NEVER should’ve had the Saints Row name attached to it.
Don’t know if there’s gonna be a Saints Row 5, but if they don’t go back to the series roots I hope the franchise just dies.
I felt the entirety of SR:IV was kinda just wanting to be 3 all over again which I rather liked. I haven’t played any of the DLC so can’t comment there. But eh, I guess I lost interest quickly in the series and i’m not immature enough to appreciate the game enough like my mates who had hard ons over it did.
*googles juxtaposition*
I can’t even say the word titmouse without giggling like a schoolgirl.
Is your titmouse tufted or just happy to see me?
Try boobrat instead
Heh.
I haven’t played Blood Dragon so don’t know how the intros compare, but I never heard any dramas about copying?
Also, keep in mind that the older games were generally considered to be an average GTA clone. By embracing the stupidity they made the games relevant again. Going back to the old style now would probably kill it harder than sticking to the same shtick.
It was a minor thing, but now I think about it it was probably intentional, especially considering the part after that where
after fighting through the terrorists you jump on the missile and have to climb up it as Don’t Want To Miss A Thing by Aerosmith plays *cough* Armageddon *cough* (got the reference even though I’ve never seen the movie. They’re just going as stupid as they possibly can with it. If they want to make that game, fair enough and I’ll probably even buy it, but don’t call it Saints Row.
… We need to finish our 2 Sayians run of this too XD
We do.
HEY! WANNA SEE SOMETHING COOL?!
…Yeah okay!
Oh right, super Sayian!
You should, it’s amazing. So much 80’s cheese.
I was thinking about splashing out for this too (it’s $16 IIRC), but am hesitating. I’d be very interested to know how it goes for you. I loved SR2 and thought the third one was pretty good.
Yeah, it’s cheap enough to take the risk. As I said before it could well be an enjoyable game, but so far it just doesn’t feel like Saints Row. Will let you know what I think after I’ve had a bit more time with it, don’t know when that’ll be though, not gonna have much time for gaming till next week, and then it’ll be Fallout time.
SR2 was my favourite too, still got my Freckle Bitches Collectors Edition with all the contents untouched.
Saints Row 2 was an amazing game with amazing timing for me. I had hit a point (like many others) in GTA 4 where you’re sick of dealing with the “Am I a serious game or not” issue, and then a friend tells me to try Saints Row 2 and holy shit it was great. The driving mechanics were god-awful and yet it was still a great game.
SR4 is essentially SR3 with a whole bunch of fun and nonsensical mods. For that price I say it’s worth it, and if you can get someone to co op with then it’s a steal.
Yeah. With GTAIV they started to believe they were making art and lost a lot of what made me love the series. Saints Row 2 not only had a truck with a poo cannon it had a set of fun missions to play with that truck (sort of Rocket League meets Splatoon now I think about it). Even in the better GTA games I felt like they had funny ideas but weren’t as committed to nailing the execution as Volition were. Volition would make something stupid, but on the condition that it worked. Vehicle delivery, modding and storage made cars so much better. No more losing the cool car you have to a cut scene then driving the joke car because that’s the only one that spawns nearby.
Also letting you unlock cheats by playing was awesome. If you’ve done whatever it takes to unlock unlimited ammo you’ve obviously played enough that having to refill your ammo is just a chore you don’t need. The cheats break the game but they sort of fix it and keep it fresh too.
Love that game so much.
20 minutes doesn’t really land you in the game. I found it to be a bit of a weird, linear start but eventually the barriers start coming down. It ends up being very fun to play. A lot like how Saints Row 2 and 3 were just a great place to run around causing mayhem.
I hope you’re right.
Hopefully you enjoy it, although sooner or later we’ll all reach a point where we’re done with it. Saints Row is like Frisky Dingo or Sealab 2021. The escalation of in-jokes and stupidity is part of what makes it great but it’s also what will eventually make it collapse in on itself.
That said if they went with the alternate reality/reboot idea that was sort of an American Sleeping Dogs that could result in a pretty sweet game.
Aww man, I loved Sleeping Dogs. Still upset they made that stupid MMO spin-off Triad Wars instead of a proper sequel.
I’d eat any Italian food for money.
I’m a total Pastatute. #dadjokepagesix #hi@strangeWhat did the five fingers say to the face?
SLAP!PAX 2015: Kidwrangling edition
Fri:
Monkey Island day
So today was the day we planned to checkout the expo hall. Took a bit of getting ready and starting to stress about time but everything was sorted and the Threepwoods were off. Got into PAX and headed through the hall looking and made our way to tabletop to see if we could find some taybies. Had my first squee moment on the fallout miniatures game, god damn that looked amazing. Was still kinda hard to do much with Tiglet, but we managed to get around and see everything, even if we didn’t get to play much.
Checked out the game that one of my programmers was working on, Hyperjam at the swinburne uni both, had the biggest crowd of all there games so got a nice hit of pride, even if I had nothing to do with it. Checked out some games, took some cards, had the MSI girls fawning all over Tiglet.
Caught up with a bunch of taybies and then as it was getting late so figured we would do a quick circuit of the expo hall and take Tiglet home for a sleep. Amazingly she crashed and went to sleep in the carrier in the middle of the expo hall so that throw the plans out. Nothing much jumped out at me from what was shown, but missed the chance at trying any VR which was of most interesting things for me.
Mrs Tigs played steampunk airship game. Checked out some cosplay and managed to ambush Mario and Luigi as they were leaving to get a photo with Tiglet
Then headed home to get ready for Dapper meat. Watched Serrels cook via a live stream then off to the meat. Had some issues getting there as we ran into 4 stories of stairs. Had the good fortune that a guy playing with his daughter let us into his apartment complex so we could take the elevator down.
Arrived at squires and nobody else was there, apparently we came in the ‘wrong’ way and missed everybody. Always nice to get dressed up. Then the rest of the taybies showed and and let me tell you, it was suddenly damn hot in that place. Hubba Hubba.
Waited a bit for dinner and that bit was a bit too long for Tiglet and she was fed up and ready to leave and let us know that. Was nice to get a chance to talk to some people who I hadn’t spoken to before.
Sat:
Pratchett day
So today took even longer to get ready as it was probably the more involved cosplay for me. Although after watched @markserrels cook porridge Tiglet had become a bit of a porridge connoisseur and was doing her best Matt Preston impersonation as she took her time to decide if it was acceptable. So it was closer to lunch time by the time we arrived. and then we found out the worst part of PAX this year, no prams in tabletop area /o\
We didn’t even have the carrier as we figured she would just be in the pram as we would stick around tabletop. More hanging around tabletop talking to Taybies.
Tiglet needed a sleep so we grabbed the pram and as she slept had lunch at the pub nearby. It was then I realised I needed to go to the loo, which isn’t normally an issue but I sudden realised I had to while wearing a kilt and tights. It was some interesting mental gymnastics as I got my head around that idea.
Played some more games and then had another look around the expo hall. This time the MSI girls decided to kidnap Tiglet, and took her telling her to say goodbye to Mummy and Daddy. Posted a photo to try and win the plush dragon they had on offer. Thanks @blaghman for the charge for my phone.
Got a number of compliments and requests for photos (and a couple of interviews) so were rather happy with how the cosplay turned out.
Then it was time for the meat. Decided to head down with Mrs Tigs and Tiglet so they could say hi to people we missed at PAX and hoping that Serrels might be there so we could show off Tiglet in her little kilt. Wasn’t there long before Tigelt hit her limit and I was walking them out. Had planned to leave them at the station but Mrs Tigs was nervous about going alone so I took them home before heading back out. Sorry that I missed a bunch of people but glad I was able to see people still there.
Was great to finally meat @QuizB and get some tall man hugs, so good to hug without bending. Also was very sweet to get the ‘oh so manly’ comments about wanting to meat neg and I.
FISHGEIF!!! Best birthday ever!
The headed out and everything kinda fell apart But that was fine, in fact more than fine. It was good to just hang and have a chat. 2am double cheeseburgers. Discovered that 3am drunk freeze is 3am jerk Freeze (Waves to @cj and @redartifice) Ended up grabbing a cab with Freeze and QuizB and headed home. Thanks for convincing me to head out guys.
Sun:
What the hell is this hat called day
Was a mostly tabletop day today.
Had a quick trip through the expo hall and a smile from Tiglet managed to get her a dragon from the MIS girls even without the required number of likes.
Had a game of Burglar Bros with Red and @thecracks. So much fun and after the game I was tweeting the game designer to see if they have stock left. In fact the order for that (and his other game) has now been placed.
Finally got to see some @beavwa / @princesspipster Wedding photos \o/ So damn glamorous.
received some Zelda bookmarks from @scree which made Tiglet smile. We are planning an attaching them to icepole sticks and making little puppets out of them for her.
Then it was time to spend all the monies. We bought a few boardgames and Mrs Tigs bought me a few Pop Viynl figures for my birthday.
In the main hallway we ran into Mark and Harli and stopped to say hi. Didn’t get much of a chance to chat though as Tiglet was determined to escape.
Mrs Tigs headed out to grab some dinner with a couple of friends and I headed home to cook up some pasta for Tiglet and I. The first real meal I had eaten since PAX started. It was only later that night before I remembered I hadn’t congratulated @trikeabout on his wedding. I’m the blurst
And typically now that I finish it is page 6 and nobody will read it
Were you involved in the 3am phonecall I got from Freeze that I half parsed?
I was there. There was some nos and lots of shaking of heads. I was wondering if you decided to have smoothies for breakfast and cranked up the blender at 6:30am
I think I was less awake than I thought I was
Obviously I only got one side of the call, but it didn’t sound like there was much coming from your end.
I don’t remember this at all.
You called Red at 3am just to ask him if he was awake
And something about Rugby. I think you were trying to come back and watch it and I was saying OK sure but the conversation went back and forward on this point for several minutes.
Oh let’s not get me started on that rugby fiasco.
I’m glad that she likes them.
It was nice meeting you guys! Tiglet was the cutest little paxling! (yes, she out-cuted batboy!)
This is the best comment
Based on how cute batboy was, she must have been pretty damn cute.
Loved batboy’s energy on day one when he was painting the signs
He painted EVERYTHING! I was very proud of how the last-minute roller turned out. It’s a pool noodle, an old coat-hanger, a cricket stump and a lot of tape and paint. Amazingly it survived the flight down, PAX and the flight back. Hooray for duct tape!
Hey hey. No apologies required! (From you… I have to apologise to @cookingmama for not saying hello at all… Oops… My only excuse is I was struggling to learn every new face and was a bit overwhelmed!)
Was excellent time and I look forward to seeing everyone again.
Slow reply because Mrs Trike and I spent N7 Day on a coach from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap… Angkor Wat today!
No worries man – I was in cosplay so I didn’t look like me anyway!
So I took Sid into bunnings. He was scared of the lift. It was kind of amusing and also sad. He was also scared of the travelator. He was a good boy until he peed on some plants. They were inside, but they were plants! We told the person and offered to clean up after him but the lady said she understood.
He was pretty good overall and people didn’t seem to care. He also wanted my sausage, but he doesn’t get one because he is fat.
Since when do they have lifts and travelators in Bunnings, it must be absolutely massive. Even when I lived in Adelaide none of the ones I went in were anywhere near big enough to warrant anything like that.
Ours is two floors.
That’s huge, I’ve only ever been in single storey ones.
Yeah, it’s pretty big. We got two parts of the oven tower kit.
Reminds me of this time I went to a Bunnings out at err Watergardens Shopping Centre in Victoria once, I almost got lost it was that big 😐 Something like 50 or 60 continuous aisles. My local one is like 20 aisles.
Just like my ex-wife.
Calm down.
No one cares!
currently working on them.
New bookmark!
That’s awesome!
Of course we do. Looks great.
Sorry, I was tired when I wrote that.
It looks cool, but I have no idea who that is :/
Love shockers from JSRF. I don’t expect people to know
I think I saw them in an adult store once.
i would not be surprised =P
Invalid link?
Yeah, I deleted them as I decided to go bigger. Just gotta do beat and then I’ll update
Jesus came upon a small crowd who had surrounded a young woman they believed to be an adulteress. They were preparing to stone her to death.
To calm the situation, Jesus said: “Whoever is without sin among you, let them cast the first stone.”
Suddenly, an old lady at the back of the crowd picked up a huge rock and lobbed it at the young woman, scoring a direct hit on her head. The unfortunate young lady collapsed dead on the spot.
Jesus looked over towards the old lady and said: “Do you know, Mother, sometimes you really piss me off.”
Made me think of this.
Praise Jebus!
What’s the correct way to pack French bread for long journeys?
You baguetteYou’re reading a post by a bona fide Wii-U game developer. Confirmed my account five minutes ago.
Now all I gotta do is develop a game.
Oh crap. Maybe in 2017 😛
Wow! That’s cool. The NX will probably be out by then though.
I’ll be following the news VERY closely in the months before I order my dev kit, if/when that happens.
Apparently they’re already sending out dev kits for the NX.
http://segmentnext.com/2015/10/16/development-kits-for-nintendo-nx-are-being-distributed-now/
Huh. That’s interesting. Thanks for letting me know.
No worries man, if they are actually sending them out now it could mean a retail release sometime next year.
Rumour has it it’s going to be more powerful than the PS4 and Xbone too, which isn’t surprising seeing as they’ve both been out for two years.
Still reckon the new Zelda will be a launch game.
I’m not ready to let go of my WiiU yet! D=
Sending them out now means retail release in 2017 unless Nintendo want a repeat of the Wii U. Big third parties can’t make a game on brand-new hardware in <12 months.
If it’s an x86/64 machine with similar specs to the current gen, I could see some mediocre ports in that time, but I definitely think that it won’t be out until 2017, and until then is going to be a really shitty dry spell for ninty fans.
I was thinking more along the lines that it would launch with first party games, with third party support to come later.
Has anyone here played Heroclix before?
My brother in law picked up a bunch of them super cheap at PAX and the guy who was selling them made it sound pretty fun.
Thoughts?
It’s one of those things that is always there but nobody really seems to play it. Basically, the tabletop equivalent of World of Tanks.
Seems like fun if you have someone to play with.
One of the stalls i was speaking to about it said their store (based in dandenong) has regular drafts and games of heroclix – first time I’d heard of anything like it haha.
Seems like it could have some really good elements though – might read through the rules on the weekend and see.
I personally like the idea that their abilities and stats change as they take damage – seems a nice touch.
For the last few months, I’ve been falling steadily back into the Magic the Gathering trap. I’m regularly watching streams and whatnot and went to the Battle for Zendikar pre-release a few weeks back.
Now that I think about it, this seems like a good excuse to give Android: Netrunner another shot. Both games scratch the same itch. It just comes down to if the local Netrunner community (which meets once or twice a week at the FLGS I don’t go to much) is nice or not. I’d quite like if they weren’t raging dickbags.
So I spent a bit of time today sorting all of my Netrunner cards. I’ve really fallen behind the latest releases. The most recent box I bought was Creation and Control, which came out more than two years ago. They release small expansions every month and a big expansion every six months. That’s a lot of cards that I don’t have.
Oh well. I think I’m just going to have to dive in and see what happens. Worst comes to worst, I can write about it. Not that I’m lacking in things to write about right now thanks to PAX.
I’m still only looking into magic for the first time. From what i see the rabit hole runs realllllly deep… holy cow..
Similar to netrunner, it makes me glad i bought Conquest… although, apparently, to have tournament level decks you need to buy the core set 3 times… bloody hell.
You what? O_o Cripes…
Yeah – unless you have the Tyranid expansion, which already comes with 3 copies of each card so it super strong from the get go
Then that is what I’m going to do, get that expansion if I’m going to try going in with Tyranids… oh and the Necrons.. whenever that is, apparently it could be in Jan-Feb next year when we see that
Everything but the core set comes with three copies of all the cards. I guess that means the inevitable Necron expansion (which we all know is the only thing Techie cares about :p) will work out just dandy.
The downside is that the LCG model demands that the core set remains the baseline for power. Most of the game’s staples will be in the core set and several cards that you want to build decks around as well. New players will always start with the core set, so it has to be relevant.
Hey the Tau are pretty cool guys too… but yeah you’re right about the Necrons 🙂
Fantasy Flight are dicks like that. All of their LCGs let you run 3 copies of any card. All of their core sets contain a single copy of several very powerful cards. I have two copies of the A:NR core set for exactly that reason and will probably need a third if I ever get serious about the game.
Yeah – I already noticed some damn powerful cards in the conquest set.
Is there no way to get tourney packs or something to only get the 2 other copies of the other cards or is it as bad as it looks?
You can actually buy card sets on ebay from people that split the base set up.
Probably be the easiest and cheapest way if you only want to main 1 or 2 factions
Yeah I might do that but only for Tau as my second main, or Chaos, whichever I decide to pick, cuz either work
Oh, the Magic rabbit hole is mega deep. That’s why early on I said I would draft, and play commander, because otherwise you could spend megabucks.
What the heck is drafting, anyway.
I think the worst i may get is maybe buying a couple of starter set – mainly because i am wayyy too busy to build decks, so would prefer something that is more or less balanced out of the box, due to only playing casually with friends that would be very unlikely to play any other time
8 of you sit at a table with three packs in front of you. Open the first pack, pick a card, and pass the pack to the left (and receive from the right). Keep doing this until the first pack is done, then open pack #2 and pass to the right.
Once you’ve done this with all 3 packs, build a 40 card deck from what you drated and basic lands
Main advantages are
1) drafting is a game in itself,
2) fixed cost to play (cost of 3 packs)
3) Deck power is based on skill, not the biggest wallet
4) it’s a cool mini tournament.
Good way to get cards, and you end up with weird one-off decks that you can cannibalise for commander.
Here’s the thing. Just buying sealed product isn’t a super good way to get specific card. Good when you’re starting out and experimenting, and I buy packs for fun sometimes, but usually you’re better off buying specific cards you want
Spawn Point in Sydney used to run a Commander (?) night that I dragged my girlfriend along to once (she was obviously thrilled).
It seemed like a lot of fun, given that I had played magic once before and she had no idea at all. I managed to pull a cool combo and 1-shot someone to death, so that was fun. Then I got stomped, but we all knew who the moral victor was.
10/10 would play again.
Commander is a big dumb battlecruiser magic format.
Last big game I played, we compared it to two punch-drunk boxers laying into each other in the tenth round, landing punches on each other but no-one backing down.
Until I cast a bunch of shit from everyone’s graveyard and took all their stuff and won
That DOES sound like fun.
@chuloopa New pre-gen commander decks come out in like two weeks. If you can get your whole group on board, grab one each and you can give it a shot.
I like it because you can make decks that just do weeeeeeeeird things. I have one deck that’s mostly counterspells with this guy http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=253701 as commander, I just spawn drakes. Another one is entirely devoted to taking other people’s stuff and casting their own spells back at them.
I had some card that gave me mana for each tapped land in the game, some card that let me cast the mana spell again again, and another card that let me pay mountains to deal damage to a player. It was almost as ridiculous as it was awesome.
I’ve been getting into Magic via Magic Origins on the XBOX One lately (also on the PC and PS4). If you haven’t checked it out I recommend picking it up. From what I understand Origins is essentially a reboot to make it a little less overwhelming.
They use a really nice free to play model where you can win/buy coins to buy boosters. The campaign gives you a decent amount of coins and so do the battles and daily rewards, and the boosters only contains cards you can use (so once you get four of a specific card, you’ll never get another). I think in theory if you open 80 boosters you’ll have the maximum amount of every card in the game and you can do that without spending a cent (you can also pay coins to ‘foil’ your unlocked cards, which does nothing). All future expansions are going to be released for this game so you shouldn’t have to start your collection over again.
That all sounds like dodgy free to play mechanics but they’re surprisingly fair about them. The daily quest system lets you stack 3 days worth of quests without having to login and if the objectives overlap you can take care of them at the same time. The amount of coins everything gives is fair. I get the impression the only reason the coins aren’t 1:1 with real dollars is because it’s hard to do in-game credit rewards that way. I guess they don’t care if players play this for free forever since they’ll probably go out and buy a real deck sooner or later.
Honestly my only real problems with it are that they use some pretty brutal AI cheating techniques and I find the card game itself requires a bit too much fiddling around while playing.
Wrote something that’s a bit personal to me:
http://yearofthehermit.tumblr.com/post/132636563901/coming-out-aftermath
Mentions hottest girl at the party immediately followed by picture of @dkzeitgeist.
Excellent.
Haha! Oh man, I didn’t even check to see whether the photos fit with the words. Just that it was a picture from that same party. 😛 PICTURE IS GONE.
My hotness surpasses gender.
Thanks for sharing, man. A really interesting and honest post.
Thanks for reading. Really long and rambling and probably could do with some editing. You’re the real hero for getting through it. 😀
Great post DC! Takes a lot of courage to put a piece of yourself out there (which is what I feel this post is!) =]
Thanks man. 🙂 Always a bit nervous when I do it, but people have been really nice. Haha!
I like to think people are best represented by that line in coach carter – what is your greatest fear.
Seeing others shine their light only lets those around them know it’s ok to do the same. The trick is finding someone who’s willing to shine first =] So kudos for doing that DC.
Nice writing and glad you are finding that balance in your mind
Totally different but having that new identity fill your life does resonate with me. Becoming a father and suddenly that is what I am and what I do. I have recently started to actively try to be ‘me’ some times.
Oh, I imagine the fatherhood thing is all consuming. 🙂
Thanks for reading, my friend. Really appreciate it.
It is but doesn’t have to be. and thanks for sharing
This is so true. That part of DC’s post resonated with me too.
Becoming a father made me cling to my writing self more than I ever had before.
I had a similar thought. This new identity, called Mum, takes some adjustment.
DC, I didn’t read it all because I felt I had to respond. Do you really think people on TAY care if you’re gay or not? You wouldn’t care if any of us suddenly came out as gay. I’m glad that you seem to be travelling well and that you don’t feel you need to keep it hidden. Your preference of sexual orientation isn’t going to change who you are.
At the same time, that is one of the toughest but most bravest things you can do. Congratulations.
Thanks Scree. 🙂 The fear isn’t based on any thing rational, though. It’s just this abstract worst case scenario that’s constantly swirling through your head, that’s been building momentum for years and years and years. In hindsight, of course you guys were gonna be cool with it but paranoid DC wasn’t so sure. 😛
Everyone who goes through something similar has these doubts. You were scared but you still did it. That’s pretty fucking brave.
It’s a good piece. Some interesting insights I hadn’t spent much time considering; thanks for that. That kind of peek is always a good thing.
Also, I’m totally up for wing-manning at gay bars. The Wickham is probably Gay Lite/pubbish, and the Beat a little more intense/clubby. And there’s always The Sportsman up the hill at Spring Hill, which is even more ‘pub’ style than club with an older clientele (my brother’s friends say they go there when they want to feel young and attractive by comparison), and a couple of the bartenders there do some pretty interesting drag routines. I remember when I was working around there one of the bartenders would shout me a whisky every now and then when I went there for the roast lunch. Probably liked my eyes. And uh… damn, there was one opposite, on the corner of Leichhardt and Little Edward that I can’t remember. Whatever, the offer is totally there, and genuine. Apologies in advance that face to face I am likely to continue being that off-putting kind of… reserved. My wit is drier than it is fast, meaning I tend to simply observe and enjoy the company. I assume lack of emotive forthcoming might not give you the social feedback that would probably put you more at ease, but y’know. I guess there are things I should work on, socially. Thanks for reading, man. I’m bit rusty on the writing front, but just had to put down what had been swirling through my head the last little while. 🙂
I think The WIckham would be more to my liking out of all of these. The gay lite thing seems a nice gateway. 😛 Might make a meat *cough* out of it real soon. I know the Hellscreams were keen. STAY TUNED. Appreciate the offer. Genuinely. 🙂I’m keen, too! I already offered to go with you, but I guess an old lady would cramp your style. 😛Hahaha, yessss. This has to happen. 😀
A meeting meat meet! \o/
You write goodly. <3
I understand the IG thing in a completely different but still similar way. A little bit after I first joined I found myself looking at other people’s work, (and being jealous of other people’s pictures of their fabric collections!) and comparing my work to theirs. After a while of getting myself upset about this, I finally realised that what I was doing differently to everyone else was what was going to make me special. And I made a point from then on to not only not compare myself to anyone, but also to make sure I was just being myself, and share the bad with the good, to really put myself out there and expose everything (in a figurative sense, not literally! :P) so that nobody else looked at my feed and felt bad. I don’t want to be carefully curating a life in pictures that I want people to think I have, I want to show ALL of it so others can relate and feel better that their lives are far from perfect too.
Awww, thanks Strangey. You’re so kind. <3
That’s it exactly. I wonder if everyone has this Instagram epiphany eventually. The way you’re doing things is awesome and shows the real person. 🙂
The gays like to expose themselves literally, though. 😛Not just them =D
I have seen the PAX pictures. 😛
Sorry.
Nothing to apologize for, except making me look inadequate in comparison. 😛
It’s ok it happens to a lot of people 😎
But yeah I think I agree with what you and Strange are saying. I dunno if I ever had a specific epiphany moment as such, I feel like I’ve kind of always been happy enough doing my own thing. But I think in more recent years I’ve become more unapologetic in the “welp, this is me, this is who I am” of things, and just laid it all out there. Warts and all 😛
Something something Scree’s fault.
Also, I’m so damn excited for Fallout 4. Gonna mosey SO much.
I’ll make a character designed to amble through the wasteland with you, if you like.
You can be Phoebe Mosey and I’ll be Christopher Walken.
And I’ll be in my Jetpack power armour going “HAH SUCK IT JETPACK WHAT UP *rocket noise*”
Mines gonna probably limp after an accidental encounter with a Fat Man..
I’m downloading it right at the moment but won’t be able to play it for another 2 days! I feel like Cartman waiting for the Wii…
Saw the Scribbletaku image on the front page, Bubsy theme is now stuck on repeat in my head.
This day just got a little bit brilliant.
I ruined it for everyone just by being right place, right time!
Just had a look and I’m shocked it took so long. I recognised it on the spot…2 hours after it went up 😛
Grats on getting it!
I also recognised it the minute I saw it. And ruined it for everyone!
Why does The Dig remind you of Bubsy?
Why wouldn’t it?
Point.
I’ve had the Battleblock Theatre secret level song stuck in my head thanks to reading your post earlier today.
Song? What song?
This song? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwZISypgA9M
You a literally the worst per-it’s a secret
*starts singing song*
I need a new PC, but we also need a new kitchen. I want a new PC, but the kitchen is more urgent.
…
I will probably spend all my money on stuff for the new kitchen.
Buy the new PC and cook food through – http://www.battlechefbrigade.com/
I wish. I know that Mum has wanted a new kitchen for years
That doesn’t automatically make it more urgent though. I mean if the kitchen counter is sinking and the oven is buggered that’s urgent, but if you need a new computer and your mum wants a new kitchen that makes the PC more urgent even if you’d rather go with the kitchen.
Can you compromise and put off buying one part of the new kitchen until later in order to get the core components for the PC today? It’s a bit hard with kitchens since you tend to gut the room and rebuild it, but I remember when we redid my sisters kitchen she included new appliances in that budget when she could have just kept her old ones until they actually needed to be replaced.
Our oven is useless and the kitchen counter with the sink is sinking. ^^;; It’s kind of urgent. I’m sure Mum will help me, but I figured that I can keep working on my current computer. Later she can help me buy my computer =P
Yeah that’s legit urgent. My mum is in a similar position. The seals on the oven are basically gone so it takes three times as long as it should to cook anything. The amount of money she must waste using it is worth the cost of a new oven. Although my main concern is that she’s got so used to the long times that she’s going to burn the place down with a new oven that has the capacity to burn a meal. You should get on the sink ASAP since if it starts to move out of it’s position it’s likely to break the various seals on the backing or potentially the pipes. The resulting water damage can be very costly if you don’t notice it’s happening and let it go on too long.
It’s awkward because we need to get it all beforehand. That’s why I decided to put my extra pay towards getting items
How new a new pc do you need? I have a lot of parts and a couple of decent cases that are surplus, and with some careful scavenging and a few tactical new bits… Talk when I’m back in Melbourne?
What would you like to play/do that you cannot now?
I have a first run i7 processor. It’s starting to get old (7 years!) so it’s time for an upgrade. It still does most of what I want it to do, but if I move into 3D work, it will struggle.
http://www.cracked.com/blog/7-tv-movie-cocktails-we-got-drunk-in-real-life/
Guy made and taste tested a bunch of cocktails from Danger 5. Gotta say, keen to try some, especially the Fruit Madrid.
I wanted to run a… well it’s not really a movie night. TV night? Where I’d prepare the same, and hand them out at the appropriate moment.
I could probably skip the Fruit Madrid though.
Should do it on team speak and we can all join in XD
As in we watch the same things and get drunk, not the tasting thing because I still don’t think it’s possible to transmit liquid over data… I tried
It’s hard to keep everyone’s videos in sync but it’s surprisingly fun. Just prepare a drink list before you start so everybody is on the same page (or adjusted for those with higher/lower tolerances). A friend of mine and I used to get hammered drunk and watch movies while playing MMORPGs. We’d find a reason to start at 8 and by 9 she’d be lost somewhere in the wrong dungeon and I’d be ranting about Superman. Good times. =P
Ah, the perfect Bangkok Sunrise!
Glug glug glug glug-glug-glug.
Okay guys, I have a dilemma. I made the love shocker bookmark and saved it and stuff. Then I realised I had made it too big. So I now have no idea what I should do. Shrink the Love shocker, or enlarge Beat and Rapid 99?

Enlarge Beat and Rapid 99 imo.
Love shocker?
Pretty sure i saw that at sexyland once
Nor this
I’m convinced this is a sex toy range. If so sign me up for 2 Rapid 99s. I’m a busy gentleman of discerning taste without an abundance of spare time.
this doesn’t help me in the slightest.
You’ve got a minimum order?
I am only one person freeze! I can’t make bookmarks, cosplays, inkling hats AND sex toys.
Use your ingenuity to make something that’s all four.
I’m not that talented! D=
More talented than vast majority of us.
I disagree. There’s people like Shane here.
I couldn’t make a sex toy if my life depended on it. Don’t bring me into this! 😛
Well, the inkling hat does have tentacles…
This whole conversation thread makes me so happy.

I mistimed it. Every. Bloody. Time! ;_;
Edit: My “Under the Sea” was way better IMO 😛
To be fair, the video had the timing way off.
Making this laptop mine… http://imgur.com/tQaZ2dP
Good choice of wallpaper. It’s even better in stereo.
Holy shit.
LinusTechTips just released a build log on putting a Micro ITX gaming PC in the Mini Nuke from the Fallout Anthology. I totally want to replicate this now. Just I would need access to a 3D printer =(
Edit: Should probably make known that it’s on their Vessel channel which releases 1 week ahead of YouTube & it’s a subscription based platform.
I got my very first parking ticket yesterday. Apparently you have to buy a parking ticket to park somewhere in Fremantle. Who knew?
The people reading the signs? 😛
Those machines on the footpath aren’t just for dogs to pee on.
Pay for parking? Man what a rich place that must be!
Were you near Pier 21? That’s the extent of my Fremantle knowledge 😛
There’s parking in Fremantle? Like for cars?
Legend tells of it.
Damn.. I’ve now found every single place in Fallout 3, done every quest. Now to find the rest of the Bobbleheads I guess. I’ve only sunk 43 hours in to this play through as well =(
Ugh finding a place sucks, I don’t know how to adult 😛
Anyone know of anything available in or around Bowen Hills (QLD)? What’s a general price range for rent? (if you’re willing to share what you paid/pay and what you get). It’s pretty hard to get an average indication with so many variables like being fully furnished, utilities included, location, car spots, gym, pool etc.
I’m willing to shuffle around some variables but research is poopy 🙁
At the moment I’m thinking of living solo but it could be cool with a buddy. Know of any potential room mates? Where’s my QLD equivalent of a @powalen/@alexpants 😛
Recommendations and/or thoughts about the suburbs around Bowen Hills? I’ve heard not to stay in Fortitude Valley :D. The QLD office will be in Bowen Hills so anywhere around there will work for me. I don’t want to stay directly in the CBD and wouldn’t mind the suburbs #suburblife
I’ve got some form from the moving company and apparently they can help you find a place with some generic recommendations. But any sort of additional information can help as it looks like they can look into specific suburbs you provide.
Enjoying all the questions?! 😀
Thanks! Feel free to talk to me off-TAY if necessary. Move still isn’t until early 2016 but just thought I’d study while I can!

No idea what rents are like in that part of town as I’m southside, but I can’t imagine it would be cheap around there due to it’s close proximity to the city. Where I am, rent can be anywhere from around $280 a week, to 600, and my house is about 20km from CBD.
One advantage you have though, is with your work being at Bowen Hills, makes it easy to get to by train. Especially if you live somewhere on the Beenlleigh or Ferny Grove lines. No change of trains to get there. Perhaps check the queensland rail website for suburbs along those lines and search for rentals around there?
Ferny Grove, yes. I wouldn’t fuck around commuting from the other side of the city on the Beenleigh line though.
Teeny Grove line is a bit more expensive in my experience, but worth a look
Shorncliffe line is also an option, cheaper places but less frequent trains.
@greenius
Move to any suburb along the caboolture train line. In the morning, there’s a train every 10mins & going home it’s about every 15. Unless you live anywhere Northgate station or before in which case you can also catch the express, it isn’t an express until after Northgate.
If you move to a place near Eagle Junction station you’ll also be able to catch airport trains because ej is the last stop before the airport where they jack up the price.
The closer to the cbd the more expensive unless you can handle older places.
I’m not sure what you’d consider cheap, I’m not even sure what is cheap. I lived with mates in a 4 bedroom place before I was married & it was $70 a week back then. I think they’re paying more than double now. Prices skyrocketed just before I got married.
My wife and I had a two bedroom apartment that was around $200 a week 5 years ago not far from the city. that was not bad but it looked old, had old carpet & old fittings etc.
I know several people that would probably live with you but they’re all drunks. The friends that cleaned up their act have all settled down these days.
I used to use realestate.com , dunno if there’s a better replacement these days.
But look along the caboolture line z work your way out from the city using real estate.com’s search and I’d be happy to have a second look for you.
I saw a fully furnished room in a nice area not too far from ej station the other day on my way home from work.
How long til you move here?
Happy to help 🙂
Still no final date but I’m thinking February at this point. I’ll have a car too but maybe trains or those crazy “express tunnelling buses” I keep hearing about might be better? Depends on price/convenience! Company is willing to pay to ship my car there, but I don’t want it sitting there collecting dust 😛
Oh well, if you bring a car then that opens up heaps of options. Will they have a carpark at work? Not sure of the parking situation in Bowen Hills.
It could be cheaper to drive to a train station and train in.
Id avoid buses as much as possible if you can. Traffic is nuts in Brisbane, there was a massive population boom and those tunnels aren’t helping with the shocking traffic.
Id just llok for a place on the North side then, not too far out and drive in. Places are cheaper the further they are from stations anyway.
even if you do bring a car and not drive every day, youll get plenty of use on weekends I reckon. I can always use a lift out to Freeze’s BBQs :p
*leaves car in Melbourne*
Buses are a good option southside, they have their own lanes that run along the motorway so traffic isnt an issue. They will go through every 5 mins or so, very viable option for southsiders – cc @greenius
Yeah, we only have the one bus road & tha starts at Bowen Hols & ends in the city…
I’ll be looking for a couple of housemates in my place in Alderley around Jan/Feb sort of time 😛 around Bowen Hills, apartments are about $350-400 a week I think for the cheaper places
HMMMMM! That’s actually really close to Bowen Hills…
;D
Keep me posted? Potential gaming buddies? 😛
EDIT: How is Alderley anyway? Just did a quick look on realestate.com and I’m seeing some pretty good places 😮
Alderley’s pretty nice. Fairly quiet. The house I’ve been eyeing off on the top of my road overlooking the city is up for auction…I just need a million or so to buy it I reckon..you’re not bringing a spare million up with you are you? 😛
But yeah, Bowen Hills is ten mins on the train and the station’s a ten min walk from my house. Plus loads of room for multiple gaming areas 😀
I lived right smack dab in between the RBWH and the Bowen Hills train station, overlooking the scenic M7 onramp. I was paying… $465/w for a 2br apartment (with car park and also the building had FTTH NBN) and I know rents in that building have gone down due to the completed construction of a larger building across the road and a new building being planned next to it.
It’s a great place to live, and I genuinely didn’t need a car. You’ll be able to walk to work which will make things easy, and the public transport options are great. Walk in to the Valley, quick train in to South Bank / West End. The only thing you might find difficult without a car would be grocery shopping. I did all my shopping in the city and then took the train back home. Results may vary.
If you can find an affordable place (relative to your wage) in the Valley, I recommend it. I loved living there… but you definitely pay extra for the brand name.
I lived there for several years, and its reputation for violence seems undeserved. Never saw anyone getting assaulted who wasn’t deep in a domestic dispute or a late-night, drunken punch-up outside the clubs.
…I just had someone stop their car next to mine to compliment my beard.
I was waiting to turn right, the left lane was clear and he just pauses there while going past and says “love the beard bro. Brilliant” and drives off. A bearded dude himself, unsurprisingly. But still, what. I mean, I hardly think mine particularly stands out at all – we’re in freakin Bankstown of all places 😛
A good beard is always worth of praise.
*grabs popcorn*
Just in case, huh?
I’ve decided that instead of posting a bookmark once it’s finished, I might just post them all when they’re done. Is this okay with interested parties?
Whatever you think is best Scree.
Huh. Turns out GH has a free access weekend (though only seems to have a few hours left now). But then there’s also Splatfest. DECISIONS!
Por que no los dos?
Time constraints 😛
Weird…double post.

Will post in more detail tomorrow but 28th November Bri wants to do a BBQ meat at our place for her birthday (31,so old. So so so old) and would love you lot to come along. Won’t be to the scale of last year, more quiet.
Cheers for the notice. No idea what’s happening that far ahead, but good to know in advance! Only thing that I know already that may stop me, is if my dad gets back to Brisbane and decides to to up to clear up the stuff in his mum’s house. We were supposed to go do it a couple of weeks ago on the weekend he had his car accident, but not sure when it’s happening now. Reminder a week out would be great too if you can 🙂
No pass the parcel penis soaps? 🙁
We could arrange it specially for you if you want?
Also, I should be able to make it.
Haha, that was good fun.
Put me down as a maybe!
Does @jimu need a lift?
I won’t say no.
Lasy, last time I trained most of the way there. Knocked over 3 or 4 dungeons in Link Between Worlds.
Uncle Freeze picked me up from the station.
You could be train buddies with @dc & probably Transient 😛
Oh, they hate me…
(Colon pee)
Understandable, you’re a pretty easy to hate kinda guy 😛
*cries*
<3
Will try my darndest.
Tentative yep from me, should be ok.
So, started watching American Horror Story. I thought it was okay at first. Powered through the first season, onto the 2nd, thought i’d really like the Asylum season, turns out I find it dead boring :/ Saying I see why it’s so popular with my friends who I never thought would be into horror, it’s not that scary or horror like imo 🙁
Watched the first episode ages ago and thought it was ok, but I haven’t gotten back to it yet. The thing with these kinds of shows is you get a new setting and new characters every season, so it kind of keeps it fresh, so if you happen to not like one season it might pick right up for you in the next because it’s totally different.
Freak Show (Season 4) sounds pretty good, especially the Twisty the Clown character.
That’s why I thought i’d like it more than I do.. It’s kinda eh I think :/
Anyone got a mini quadcopter drone thingy?
I just saw a random video on one and impulse purchased it after :P. About $23ish so I can post my thoughts on it once it arrives in however many weeks.
$23 is great! I’d even consider getting one for that much! I have no experience with them myself, but we often see a big one flying around outside our windows at work!
They’re watching you!
Buy it and we can be buddies 😀
I had something a bit bigger than that but still well within the mini range. They’re tricky but it’s a fun skill to master. The only problem is they’re so light that they can’t really operate anywhere other than small rooms. The slightest hint of breeze will send them off out of control.
It looks really easy in videos but because there’s no smarts on the controls it’s all about directly adjusting the raw power of the blade motors to balance the desired movement with the current momentum. For instance if you want it to go down you’ve got to level it out to cancel all the momentum then decrease the power gradually. If you just crank the power right down it’ll fall and once it starts falling it requires more power to counter the fall, so you’ve got to crank it back up to the perfect level to stop the fall without rising again and then quickly slam it back down to the power required to hover.
It’s hard to explain but you’ll understand once you’ve got a little practice under your belt. You’ll definitely get $23 worth out of it.
Yeah, I’d imagine it’ll be hard to explain, but I never considered its momentum/weight as a factor… hmm!
I assume all of the cheapo ones would control similarly?
All the ones I’ve encountered have been the same. Even the little desktop helicopter was more or less the same controls. They’re really interesting because without the fancy systems of the big versions they almost plug you directly into the physics of flight. You can sort of see/feel in real time the way it tilts forward and shifts it’s center of balance to move forward.
