Fallout 4 comes out tomorrow and the price war that has followed this highly anticipated video game has been truly legendary.
This has been the bloodiest video game retail release I can remember. And the price slashing continues to escalate.
The Cheapest
Of all the deals I’ve seen, this may be the cheapest. Independent Aussie retailer Gamesmen is selling Fallout 4 on Xbox One and PS4 for $58 on their eBay Store. That includes delivery. It also comes with a handy Fallout 4 perk poster.
One little catch: stock is limited.
Gamesmen started out with 2000 units. They’re now down to under 500. By the time you read this post there’s a high chance they’ll be sold out. In fact, at time of writing, they’ve already sold out of PC copies.
GO GO GO!
The Best Pre-Order Deal
But if you miss out on the Gamesmen deal, your next best bet might be the JB Hi-Fi deal. That one is still $59 for a pre-order on all three formats. It appears as though JB Hi-Fi will be less likely to run out of copies. But: JB Hi-Fi has run out of online copies at this price. You’re going to have to enquire in-store if you want this one.
Again: this is pre-order only. No idea whether or not JB Hi-Fi will keep this deal going once the game has launched. I know — pre-ordering games isn’t ideal, but this is a decent exception to make.
We called up one store and were informed that yes, pre-orders are still available at that price. Also: the non-pre-order price on day one is $69. Which isn’t bad, but it’s still $10 more.
The Next Best Thing
Target is still selling Fallout 4 at $64. That is still an absolutely phenomenal price. There’s less information on this deal online, but that is the price they have on their most recent catalogue, so this is most likely an in-store, on-the-day deal. Again — Gamesmen will most likely be sold out at this point, as will JB Hi-Fi I’m expecting. Be aware that the bargain hunters among you will most likely be swarming to Target as option number three. I wouldn’t be surprised if this deal sells out tomorrow as well.
The Last Resort
Okay, last chance here. If you remember it was Big W who kicked off this crazy price war to begin with. They’re selling Fallout 4 at $69 on console and PC. That deal still stands. It might end up being your safest bet in the end. Again, this is in-store.

I’m gonna get it for free. All I have to do is wait until Christmas.
Yeah that’s my thought too. Just wait and see who wants to give it to me over the Xmas break.
Don’t be surprised if tomorrow Big W drop the price to beat Target
Don’t be surprised if Target removes the game for promoting violence against women.
No… They’ll wait a year until they’ve made all the money they’re gonna make off it, then claim they’re doing it for their family friendly blah blah blah.
Why won’t anyone think of the mutants!?
Fallout 4 won’t need to bring in pointless first person violence against women to cover a lack of good writing or gameplay, so it will be fine.
There’s a reason why GTA5 seems to be most popular with preteens.
“…pointless first person violence against EVERYONE…”
Fixed that for ya. Respectfully disagree with your points, but don’t want to hijack the point of this post (Fallout 4 $$$).
That madadam81 sure is sexist.
GTA was high profile. The people who started the Petition don’t know what Fallout is.
It was never about what was in the game, it was about what they thought was in a game they had never seen and never played.
To @energydrinkhigh and the others who are upset Target are making money on games but banned one. Think of it this way, their core demographic decided not to shop there. Most of us on Kotaku just go there for cheap games they are making a loss on.
If the Majority of my customers refused to shop at my store unless I stopped stocking Strawberry Milk, I’d get that off the shelves in a heartbeat.
I don’t have a store, It doesn’t stock Strawberry Milk, I don’t even like Strawberry Milk and I have no CustomersI wasn’t upset by what they did. I just though it was hypocritical and a complete over-reaction. but more importantly… you don’t like strawberry milk??? To quote GlaDOS: “You monster!”
Big W and Target have 20% off their ebay store today,
I’m pricematching at the eb near work because I’m poor & had to trade. Also, jb isn’t near enough.
JB Hifi has been advertising the $59 price. If they haven’t changed the prices once the game hits, then there are going to be a lot of arguments and claims of false advertising
The guy in my local JB said they will probably sell floor stock on day one at the pre-order price of $59 but wasn’t 100% certain.
With me, if the price on the floor says $59 when I walk in, then that’s the price I expect. If I get to the counter and the price is different to what is advertised on the floor they should be giving me the advertised price.
They may be able to claim that this is a pre order price and that if you buy floor stock it it $69. Which is fine I guess. I dont think they are breaking any laws. It clearly states pre-order.
Walked in today. No preorder. Walked out with the game for $59. I told them that because $59 was the only advertised price in store and online leading up to launch with nothing indicating that you were required to preorder to SECURE the price, that technically they were misleading customers before launch.
“Preorder price” is not a great indicator that you must preorder to secure the pricing. If the signs in store said “Preorder now to secure the preorder price of $59” then I would have been paying $69.
ACCC requirements demand that advertising disclose these things very specifically and any type of “vague condition advertising” is illegal.
If thats the case then thats cool then. I would be more upset if they then refused to give it to you for that price. JB is reasonably good with not being d*cks about stuff I’ve found. Although others might have worse experiences. Good you got it for the $59. Mine turned up this morning so alls good and well 🙂
Every JB store I’ve walked into recently has clearly labelled the $59 as a pre-order price only. No false advertising there – just a case of people not wanting to read the advertising clearly
Rang my local jb and they said their price tomorrow will be $69 but still $59 if i preorder now. So i preordered.
All the advertising I’ve seen has made it clear that’s the preorder price, but that’s only 3 or 4 stores I happen to have walked past in the last month.
FYI: EB games staff told me they would price match JB-HiFi pre-order price of $59 because I have a pre-order with them already (also helps that I’m getting pipboy edition for xbone and then trading the game disc for my ps4 preorder). EB games preorders come with a poster and soundtrack too!
Yeah, rang my local EB and they wouldn’t price match as it was a “preorder price”. Probably still get it from there with a price match to Big W as a soundtrack and poster is not a bad deal and I’m too lazy to wait for the post.
Yeah they just tried that rubbish on me too, literally 30 mins ago.
Difference is I went in personally and said flat out that I will price match to JB’s pre-order offer, when he started saying they couldn’t I said it wasn’t my first rodeo and it wasn’t a sale price.
Their tune changed quiet quickly and acted like they didn’t realise I was pre ordering an said they can match it if I was preordering with them.
I learnt ages ago that if you show them that your not sure, a lot of the time they will bullshit you.
Friends with someone who work’s at EB and the unofficial spiel is to offer the $59 dollar pre-order price matching to whatever they deem to be “regulars”.
Some random who walks in gets the shaft, but if the guy comes in every week and pre-orders stuff don’t send him to the competition.
I figure, but I’m no regular. One manager there knows me and offers price matching without me asking, even though I very rarely buy from them. There were two guys I had never seen before today.
That’s kinda dodgy, that they prey on people who are unsure or have fluctuating rules from person to person.
Yeah that said it’s up to the staff’s discretion, my mate pretty much laughed it off saying “how the hell am I supposed to know who’s not regular??”
Lol, went into my regular EB and the douchebag manager who’s as annoying as fuck said he wouldn’t pricematch JB. Shrugged and said I’d get it off them then. No skin off my nose.
My local is matching it for me. No bullshittery and they’re happy to do it. Only hitch was I had to put down the whole 59 instead of tge $10 minimum. but that wasn’t a big deal.
If your local JB is out ask your EB Games to price match them
Tried my local EB’s. Wouldn’t price match an online and preorder price.
If they’re out of stock then EB won’t price match.
Yup. I mean, they might if they don’t check – I’ve scored cheaper games that way before. But if they know they’re out of stock they won’t match – I’ve run into that wall previously as well.
DO: Buy it digitally. Even if it costs more you’ll NEVER have to remove the disc from your machine. This may be a terrifying prospect.
DON’T: Buy it digitally from the US (as I did). They’ll be the longest 18 extra hours of your life!
Good luck getting me to pay double the price for that convenience. I’m pretty certain you can just add the game to Steam with the Steam “add-game” feature anyway if you have a valid CD key. I hope Steam’s Australian sales for FO4 tank hard.
Edit: I can confirm that JB Hifi copies are Steam compatible.
I got it from the US Xbox Live store for $60 US or something like that.
I bought $200 worth of US Xbox live cards during a sale at less than the exchange rate (I’m sure there’s some weird way of manipulating the market doing that) so I think it ended up costing me about $70 AU.
Easily worth the convenience IMO, Fallout is one of those games that I’ll be switching back and forth too plenty over the next year (or years depending on the DLC). Came with a downloadable version of Fallout 3 too which was nice.
Fair enough. I haven’t looked at other digital suppliers. I was mainly thinking of Steam’s ludicrous $113AUD price (after conversion). Somebody needs to go and tell Valve to pull their heads out of the dirt.
It’s $99.95 AU on Aussie Xbox Live i’m sure (it normally is).
It’s just offensive what they charge for a download!
Steam/Valve don’t set the price. Publishers set the price on Steam. (Same for Xbox Live and PS Store)
Prices are set with a fair amount of greed but there is also pressure from Bricks&Mortar stores not to undercut them with online sales. The bulk of sales are still Bricks&Mortar because people still like physical media, until that changes, your digital goods are going to cost just as much.
That’s up to Steam/Valve to figure out their policies then. You can’t be telling me that a retailer is entirely powerless to negotiate with its suppliers. Either way, this time I’ve voted with my wallet and, as I mentioned previously, I hope Steam’s Australian sales for FO4 tank. It’ll be a good wake up call for them.
birdy, you’re missing the point entirely, Valve dont set the prices, it would be stupid of them to ” figure out their policies” as their current policy is best practice, let the publishers have control over the pricing. If you want Valve to implement firm regional pricing you will end up with a billion different clients as publishers will go on their own ala EA/Origin and Ubisoft/Uplay. That would be a massive step backwards. As a protip Valve have are VERY lenient on australian accounts using VPNs to enable games from the US or UK if for some reason a key is locked…
It’s nice that Valve allow my US and UK friends to gift me games on the cheap and that’s often how I would do business on Steam. It doesn’t somehow take the responsibility away from Valve to push for better prices if only for their own company’s best interests in a competitive sense, especially on such big titles as this.
If JB-Hi Fi and multiple other companies can offer better prices then why can’t Valve? Again, I hope that Valve realizes they’ve made a mistake with their current setup when their Australian sales hit rock bottom on this one.
Also, using a VPN to fake your region to buy a game in a different region is technically against Steam’s rules and can potentially result in your account being shut down. Not really something I’m willing to fiddle with, and not something anyone should be forced to do.
Hey birdy , usually I don’t get the valve hype and praise. I don’t particularly dig gaben. But in this instance I think you’re shooting the messenger.
Valve are the medium in which all your games are bought through. But the developer/publisher sets the price to their own game. If anything you should be annoyed that Bethesda is blatantly gouging their most loyal customers the PC players.
I’m getting it on ps4 first. When that inevitable steam sale comes about and drops the game very low , and all the mods are out to change the game up a bit , I’ll come back to PC.
I understand that, but if JB Hi Fi and other major retailers can offer better prices, Valve should be able to follow suite. If they can’t due to the way they’ve set up their company, maybe they should change things up a bit because we’re talking big dollar figures here.
God I wish I’d done that. I’m hating on you just a little bit right now. 😛
I got my steam key for FO4 off ozgameshop for $60AUD and got my key emailed to me this morning, pre-loading now.
Got mine Sunday. Pre-loaded and ready to go.
I actually would if Australian Internet was faster.
But at the current speeds, paying more and waiting ages for increasingly bigger games to download just isn’t something I enjoy.
You’ve been able to pre-load it from Xbox Live for a week or so I think.
That or the placeholder icon was a couple of dozen gig!
It should just unlock instantly at midnight tonight. Even if you’re at the midnight launch you still have to take it home and then install it!
Also you should get an ISP with unmetered XBL content. I’m with iiNet and it’s the best.
The elephant in the room is Steam still selling FO4 at a ridiculous $80USD asking price. That’s just a slap in the face. This will be the first hard copy of any video game I’ve bought since Battlefield 2.
GMG is cheaper and they sell Steam keys. I’ve saved $60 on games a few times by going to GMG and using their cheaper price plus a 20% voucher code instead of buying at the Steam store.
I find it amazing that we’re paying so little for games right now. Our dollar is terrible against the US, games should be getting substantially more expensive. It’s kind of great.
Don’t worry, Steam is trying to keep that dream alive… It’s nearly $115 AUD if you buy it on their store right now.
I pre ordered with JB and im still paranoid they wont have a copy for me, going in first thing tomorrow 🙁
I’ve never played Fallout 3. Figure I might do that instead. Got it for 5 bucks ages ago, that’s an even better deal!
I just accidentally bought it from greenmangaming.com for about $85… I goofed and forgot they charge in usd.
So if you see their thing about it being 20% off and only $60, just keep the conversion rate in mind.
I bought it from them because generally when they say the publisher would give them the keys to put out early for pre-load they mean it. No other key site can really guarantee that.
It was an extra $20 or so to ensure I could get the thing preloaded, so I’m okay with it.
That being said, it does bother me that GMG specifically list games like “Fallout 4 (AU)” then don’t state specifically it is charged in USD. It is sort of misleading.
I used to buy there. I now buy here
https://www.instant-gaming.com/en/
Green Man Gaming doing a 20% off the pre-order. Brings it down to US standard price $60
To be very clear that is still $60 USD… So still about $85 AUD.
Oops i just bought it before thinking it was aud lol. My fault gor bot checking final payoal amount i guess haha
Getting it from JB. Best price around and I have some stuff to trade in.
I went with OzGameShop at $61.99AUD for a Steam Key.
I could have saved myself $2 and gone with JB I suppose.. but I’ve got sick of JB not living up to their promises Online and while I could get the same in a physical store, I just don’t have a good feeling about JB at the moment..
I did the same, i also just got my key this morning so i can now start pre-loading it!!
RIP with OzGameShop though. One of my mates got his through there, I got mine through the NZ one. I’m not looking forward to not receiving keys before release date so I can preload.
Thinking I shoulda gone through GMG.
Edit: @halfumanchew , I am jealous you got yours. Gaarhrhrharhhrhrhah.
Just called my local JB and they aren’t taking anymore pre-orders BUT it will be on sale at $59 the moment they open tomorrow morning ! 😀
Thanks JB I pre-ordered 2 weeks ago at $89.
They will refund you the difference after release. It’s on the terms and conditions it may take a week before you get your $30 back though.
They should refund you the difference.
Was that online? I bought mine online too and it said that if the price dropped you’d get refunded the difference.
I’m overpaying because I want a lunchbox. I feel like I’m ripping myself off.
I’m overpaying because my girlfriend wants a lunchbox.
The things we do for love…
I’m happily paying $114 for the lunchbox. Don’t care.
Price matched at EB for 59 and can pick up at midnight, best option for this schmuck. Kind of up to them it seems as their twitter account replied to my questioning as so when asked if they will match that price–
Enjoy the wasteland guys!
Damn. I was hoping this article would be a broken release date.
Sadly living in a smaller area I’ll probably have to pay EB prices to get it on release.
Walk into EB on the day, price match to JB for $59.
GG
Or just go to JB.
Spent AU$57.74 at cdkeys a little while back…
I checked my PayPal, I was charged $57.11 from cdkeys.
Did the JB pre order. Got a notification and tracking number on Friday. Hopefully its delivered for release tomorrow.
I was going to do that but was afraid it wouldn’t be delivered on Tuesday
Good luck 😛
Yeah I am wondering whether it will be as well… oh well I can wait a day I suppose. Maybe… 😐
Good luck mate, JB promised that my pre ordered copy of COD would be to me on Friday last week (even said it on the site). So far it has not shown up….
Thats annoying! I checked the tracking just now and its with a delivery driver for delivery today. So heres hoping!
I’m in the same boat but for the Starcraft 2 expansion… Got my online tracking on Friday, but as of 4pm today it’s still just saying “booked”… Really hopeful that it comes tomorrow as it only needs to get from Altona to Brunswick West.
I wonder if the fact this is Fallout means they are on the ball with it? My Toll status is with driver as of this morning (was booked still yesterday evening).
Bought it through the xbox store because I’m tired of my games “disappearing” from the shelf. Plus if all the disks explode or by console catches fire I can just redownload it.
I absolutely read that last bit like you were saying could redownload the CONSOLE if it catches on fire… Man that’d be a neat trick.
Teach me these dark magics great digital warlock!
I too would like to learn of this cybermancy.
Don’t expect to get your copy from JB HIFI if you ordered online on launch day. They promised that they would have my online pre-ordered copy of CODBO3 to me on launch day and it never arrived. I rang up Toll (who they shipped it with), and they don’t know where it is either despite having a tracking number. Sadly, I was not alone in this problem either.
Considering there were probably a few less copies of BO3 sent out compared to Fallout, it would not surprise me of more people have this issue.
I am stucked with buying from EB. Stupid Pipboy edition.
Used a VPN and got base game and season pass from GMG for $60ish (US)
no need.
https://www.instant-gaming.com/en/
What happened to telling everyone not to preorder?
Fallout 4 happened…
The argument against preordering was for stupid preorder bonuses like exclusive content that are designed purely to promote preorders to scam you out of your money early, not against “holy shit if you preorder you get this popular game that might actually sell out, you also get it for a ludicrously low price”.
I’ll wait a month and hopefully save another $20 gettng it from somewhere like G2A.
After all it is a single player game, so no need to be there day 1. That and my pile of shame needs trimming.
I preordered the pipboy edition from eb games.
My local EB pricematched my preorder when I bluntly asked will you pricematch next door. No issues whatsoever.
Green man gaming have 20% off so $60. Good deal that doesnt require driving anywhere and can get it pre loading. Just click on the fallout 4 link then it pops up with the code
Oh shoot its usd. Oh well too late for me. At least i can play at midnight tonight in WA 😉
GMG is all is USD. Still dearer.
try here
https://www.instant-gaming.com/en/
I’ve been thinking I’ll just wait to get the inevitable goty edition to hopefully get the most stable code. The glitches ruined nv for me.
Well my Pip-Boy Edition is paid off, now just to wait, then wait some more.
When will we see a review?
I asked my EB to price match. Didn’t even tell them which store or what price, and they still gave it to me for $59.
Bought one of Gamesmen earlier this morning, anyone used them before and would it arrive this week?
Anyone know the approx. trade value of Halo 5 at EB?
Packet of gum and a 3 day old newspaper. Not because it’s halo 5 but because it’s EB.
But probably $35-$40
$15-30
greenmangaming + their 20% off november coupon = 60 aud. instant delivery is best for me. saves money on petrol too
No they do not need to give it to you for advertised price. Its called Invitation to treat. the price tag could be 5 dollars and at the counter they could sell it to you for $1000. false advertising is more about if the product is different to what is specified.
No, if they advertise the price at $x then don’t have stock or raise the price then it becomes bait-and-hook (or bait and switch) advertising, which is also illegal.
Test
Don’t forget Legacy of the Void (final Starcraft 2 expansion) comes out tomorrow too!
I was more excited about Fallout 4 than my wedding. Yay!
Not wasting money on it. I win.
Got mine from jb 🙂 all paid for pickup tomorrow yay
or you know, just wait a few months for a goty edition and buy it ofor $10 off steam.
I just realised something…
We have it here in Australia for $59, which is $41.60 USD.
I wonder if Americans are having any luck with discounts, or has the world turned upside down and Australia is getting a AAA game cheaper than America on release day.
I’m just playing with my Galaxy SII which is now my Pip-Boy screen…….wish it was 11 already
Cheapest Price I’ve seen it currently $63
https://www.instant-gaming.com/en/
It looked good, up until they wanted photo ID for PayPal but they’re happy for direct credit card details. I don’t know how they plan on matching my ID to my Paypal account.
Whats with the dodgy photo ID for PayPal. What a pain. Would almost rather pay full Steam price than wait 24 hours for them two verify its really me trying to buy something on PayPal.
This wouldn’t work as it was advertised that it was going to be $69 on release day.
It wasn’t vague and the ACCC would tell you to get stuffed as it was written perfectly on the sales page.
Aaand ozgameshop are out of PC download codes. Let’s just think about that for a minute.
