A Game Where You’re A Cat. Then A Shark. Then A Tentacle Monster

A Game Where You’re A Cat. Then A Shark. Then A Tentacle Monster

What Remains Of Edith Finch is an upcoming PlayStation 4 story game that seems equal parts mysterious and twisted. It made me sick to my stomach.

It’s about a girl who returns to her childhood home: the ancestral house of the Finch family, many of whom die conspicuously young. Upon death, the family bolts the deceased’s bedroom door shut. It’s weird. As Edith Finch, you explore the house and find pieces of family members’ stories. Then you get to live those stories. It’s kinda like Gone Home, but darker, weirder, and more varied.

The story I played (and watched a developer play) at PSX was about a young girl in the 1940s. She awoke in the middle of the night hungry — ravenously so, violently so. First she ate moldy gerbil food. Then mistletoe. Then a whole tube of toothpaste. It was weird.

It got weirder. She transformed into a cat, climbed out onto a tree, and tried to eat a bird. After that, she became a shark. Then, finally, some sort of revolting tentacle monster. Watch:
