    • Yeah totally! Saw it yesterday and LOVED it! Will go see it again soon, I want to see it in a cinema equipped with Atmos.

      • Yeah, I saw it a second time last night. Loved it even more than first. Preferred it in 3D. Plus the pressure is off after the first viewing, you can just sit back and soak it in instead of over analysing every plot point. πŸ™‚

      • Saw it yesterday, my wife and I agreed in the car on the way home that we’ll see it again before it leaves cinemas.

    • Lucky enough to watch it twice also. Loved it! Just good ol’ fun.
No need to go deep into it picking flaws, it was just a great movie to sit there and watch which I haven’t said about many movies out of Hollywood lately.

  • Took part in a Netrunner tournament on the weekend. Went 0-2-2 and picked up 12th place. There were 12 entrants.

I could complain that having access to only a third of the cards hampered me. However some of strongest decks out there mostly use cards I own. The biggest issue was not knowing nearly 2/3 of the cards people could use.

Netrunner is a game of decisions. Of bluffs and optimising choices. All of that requires knowledge I don’t quite have. Yet.

    • Have you tried to “git gud”

As long as you had fun thats all that matters bun bun, knowing you, you will now make it your mission to get way way way better.

      • I had fun.

4 of 8 games were basically auto-loses. If I’m up against a deck doing something I didn’t know could be done, I can’t play around it to try and win. 2 loses could’ve been prevented by patience. 2 wins were mostly me getting good draws while my opponents did not.

I was surprised that my weaker deck went 2-2 while the deck that I much more enjoy went 0-4. You use two decks and play one game with each per round.

Funnily enough, my losing side is also the one with the stronger cards available. It’s just that I wanted to play a very single minded but fun deck instead of the very broad and powerful one.

  • My weekend was lovely. Just lovely.
A bunch of the old LoL gang picked up LoL again on friday and we just sucked, like i was horrible at the game when i first started years and years ago but this was just another level of sucking, regardless i couldnt stop laughing and having fun. Was a good feeling.

On saturday @sernobulus and i went to his parents house to pick up there old washing machine, Let me tell you: We are the best tradies, i mean technically nob isnt a tradie but he was my apprentice who was holding his phone up so i could watch a youtube video on how to tie a truckers hitch. Nothing fell off the ute on the way back to our place so i assume i did it sorta correctly?

That night i was in the mood for a christmas movie, so we ordered pizza and rewatched die hard.At the end of die hard we just both nodded and said “man die hard is awesome” Because die hard is awesome.

Didn’t do much yesterday except last night went and saw star wars again. So much good. So much much good.

How about you guys? What did you guys get up to?

Im one of three people at work this week and i forsee myself checking TAY every 5 seconds.

  • I had four days notice to host a Christmas dinner for my in laws and their weirder family members (this was a decoy dinner to distract them from the proper one!).

I had to buy a new fridge because my 200L one wasn’t going to cut it for 11 people. It arrived at 10am on the day. Badass fridge though, it was up and running in no time.

Whole event ended up going really well, but I had absolutely no time to play xenoblade, and I’d JUST been given the keys to my first skell!

  • Saw the Starr Warrs yesterday. Here’s some God & bad spoilers, for discussion purposes.

    I loved it obviously.

Lady hero stole the show, she was fantastic. I love the way she won’t take food for BB, hates being dragged by the hand, fixes shit & climbs around on shit like she’s Spider-Man’s daughter & not *ahem*

I was a bit funny with Darth 2.0 because he kept throwing tantrums. They made him as about as scary as a wet fart (so you know, moderately, if someone shits themselves near me, I don’t like it). I presume once his training is done, he’ll ditch the try hard Darth helmet & do his own thing.

I can’t believe they just reused the plot from a new hope with a sprinkling of bits from the other flicks, but whatever.

Han’s death was fantastic, I could see it coming a mile away but it plays out really well.

Actually, can’t say I was suprised by anything, but it was all done well enough that I never rolled my eyes.

Except that scene where the Nazi party addressed the Storm Troopers. I know, Star Wars has never been what I call subtle, but wow.

I really wish Good storm trooper changed his pants.

The was a lot more CG than I was expecting.

    Not enough Kenny Baker.

Lady Fett needs a far more important role in the sequels.

I look forward to the sequels & will try to squeeze in a second viewing before my Xmas holiday ends.

    • I actually really liked the idea of baby vader throwing tantrums, the dark side is all about anger and frustration and vader was still insanely calm when he was angry, i mean it was menacing as fuck but vader was also a jedi for a long time so he usually kept his cool and thought through everything, kylo is just a baby, he thinks he is the strongest and just trys to prove it over and over again and that failure wears on him because he wants to live up to vader. The nazi symbolism was anything but subtle i completely agree, i mean even in the originals it wasnt subtle but this was next level of not subtle.

      • Yeah, it won’t bother me (&bother is even a strong word for what I feel), if after he trains he drops the tantys.

It fits, Anakin pretty much was holding back on tantys the entire time he was trying to be a Jedi & his fight at the end of the Prequels was essentially just him letting loose the ultimate tanty.

        • You should watch the Clone Wars series. It’ll add a bunch of nuance to a lot of the characters from that time period that the prequels miss out on because of Lucas being shit at character writing.

          • Are you kidding? I’ve seen it, bland as.

I don’t mind catching eps occasionally, but it has nothing I much value. Not for that many hours of my life.

            I like the Prequels, remember?

          • I watched maybe the first 5 episodes in a row & I’ve seen scattered episodes of whatever plays on ABC3.

It’s ok, but unless there’s a guide to the episodes that matter, I’m not doing it.

          • First season is ropey as fuck and there are some very average bits, but at the same time there’s a ton of character building and a whole lot of lore building that’s great.

      • The fact that Vader was always in control of his anger and could harness and channel it was what made him a proper Sith, I think. Also probably a side effect of having been a fully trained Jedi. That said, he does have a few bits where he gets pissed off. Like choking Motti for shit stirring in IV. Or during the duel with Luke in V, Luke lands a hit on his shoulder and Vader flips the fuck out, unleashes the rage and that ends with Luke losing a hand.

Also on the Nazi thing, don’t forget that the Nazi party was born out of the remains of the German Empire after it was basically dismantled by the Allies after they lost WW1, and it was initially all about making Germany great again, rebuilding the empire and then getting revenge on the Allied powers that wronged them. It’s not subtle but it kind of makes sense as a historical parallel.

          • Star Wars was never subtle. The first film had an evil space wizard that dressed all in black and in his first dialogue scene he physically chokes a dude, lifting him off the ground with one arm and then crushes his neck.

Later on the EVIL EMPIRE (as they’re referred to in the opening crawl) blows up a planet – a planet that is supposedly completely pacifist, with no weapons. And they do it basically to show off how big their dicks are, not because of any real grievances.

          • But that’s what I said, I clearly say & so does rockets that it wasn’t subtle. But by comparison, this new one makes the old ones look subtle.

    • I agree, it was pretty average, but people should watch it anyway.
      It was pretty awesome

  • I went and watched a Star War yesterday.

Loved it. I could nitpicked it but I won’t, because it was just so damn enjoyable. Was it a completely faithful “Star Wars” movie? Get outta here, what’s the even mean? It was a fantasy movie set in space, it had lightsabers, iconic ships, and a lot of hooey about good vs evil, so it’ll do.

I agree with some comments I say that Rey is at this point an audience avatar. But she did a great job at that, and the scenes where she needed to show who her character is were carried off well.

Fin was great. Well played, his on-screen chemistry with Poe and Rey was fantastic, that really helped me connect with the characters.

If there was one think that felt a little out of place it was some of the sassy banter. This existed in the OT but to a lesser extent, sometimes it felt a bit much (Poe taunting Ren during the opening scene, and a lot of Fin’s dialogue fell into this category) but it all fit so well in this movie, and this movie was done so well, that I accepted it.

Kylo Ren aka Darth Emo took a couple of scenes to grow on me, but when I realised he was basically a confused kid and brought a lot of intensity to the role (channelling who I felt prequel Anakin should have been) his character clicked into place. I’ve seen criticisms that he was a weak villain and I think people who make this criticism are missing the point.

I am surprised no kids started crying when Ren ran Han through with his lightsaber. It was pretty heavily foreshadowed so it wasn’t unexpected in the slightest, but it was pretty hard to watch.

There are a lot of deliberately unanswered questions that people seem annoyed by, but I’d suggest those people go back and watch ANH and look at all the plot threads that don’t get resolved until ESB or RotJ for some serious perspective on that. I think as a generation of fans, we’ve never really had to wait for answers. Even with the prequels, all the important things were already known – Anakin becomes Vader, Sidious is Palpatine and will become the emperor, etc. Star Wars is a fantasy movie set in space, and fantasy needs mystery.

It’s not a perfect movie, it’s not a perfect Star Wars movie. But went in knowing I would be extremely critical of it even if I tried to lower my expectations, and by the end of the first act I had completely forgotten that because I was genuinely just enjoying it. I didn’t feel this way with the prequels.

So, I call it a win.

    • Still not 100% sold on Ren (&stimpy), Anakin had the fortunate role of not being a villain until he’d made that change, whereas as I was supposed to be in fear of a villain pulling a tanty everytime something didn’t go his way?

Anakin held back until his mother was slain.

He started off well, his force grab of the blaster bolt was fantastic, but it was all downhill from there.

That said, as above, I expect after he completes his training he’ll be a villain to be respected.

Yep, there was a lot of stuff dropped for sequels, I thought even more so than both the other 1s which, to me, felt a bit more stand alone.
Which is as it should be, why even pretend this isn’t the first of a new trilogy at this stage.

      • Ren’s tantrums are an example of exactly why he’s not feared or respected (at least by the audience – the people in the room with him are rightfully afraid of a loose lightsaber being haphazardly swung around by a temperamental dark side wannabe). Him killing Han was the turning point. Snoke made that clear. Once Ren killed his father he was able to sever his connection to the light – which will enable him to embrace his powers instead of being a whiny baby.
I can see why this would feel like a missed opportunity, by introducing a weak villain, but I really feel like it’s going to have a worthwhile payoff. I think there’s enough there to engage us (especially with Rogue One coming out next year?) until episode 8 is out.

        • @sernobulus

I don’t think it is, I think this is the fast forwarding Anakin lacked.

The prequels should have started on Teen Ani, seen some progression in 2 then he should have almost been sorted by the third & snapped.

I’m the outspoken prequel lover, but I think they spent too long on whiny Ani & lost audience interest. I see Stimpy being the same arc done right (if they pull it off in 2, I’m mostly confident they will with THAT director)

          • Yes, exactly. We needed teen Ani instead of toddler Ani so the immediate love interest between Anakin and Padme was believable instead of creepy and didn’t have to be forced in episode 2 with whiny Anakin on top of everything else.

The entire prequel trilogy would have been improved just by making Anakin about 8-10 years older and focusing more on his development instead of wasting time with all the trade federation garbage. It also would have helped if Lucas had a fucking writer look at the scripts before forcing actors to use that dialogue.

  • @pupp3tmast3r

Hey I remember you posting a trick with power/wiring in Fallout 4 settlements a while back, don’t spose you could re-enlighten me?

    • Yeah too easy; you might’ve already figured it out but I had no clue when I worked on my settlement. Basically forget about using connector wires and switches they just use copper for little to no utility in simple settlements (obviously larger more complex ones have more use for them). Build a generator next to a house/abode and then build connectors (I think they were called that?) they look kind of like metal traffic cones and there’s 4 variations depending on the direction you want them to face. Basically place them on the sides of a house (near the roof) and and connect a wire to them. One should provide power to about 2 walls length of a house and power everything that uses electricity in that region.

Of course if you want to power sentry lights or anything that has a number power cost next to it you’ll need to manually connect the generator to it!

  • In between feeling unwell and this stupid heat, I feel like I have got nothing done whatsoever.
Hopefully I can get back to it.

  • Mornin’ every one.

Heh, Christmas week, work is gonna be interesting this week. I don’t expect it to be as busy as Dan Murphy’s but I know it’ll be basically flat out though.

Weekend was good, worked Saturday, that was busy-ish, I like that, means i’m not standing around bored out of my mind. Sunday was nice & chill though, caught up with a friend, she might be joining us Christmas day, since her mum has gone overseas for 6 weeks & her dad & brother are in Townsville. Can’t spend Christmas Day alone I figured!

I’m also probably seeing Star Wars on Boxing Day, the original plan was Christmas Day since the local cinemas state they’re open, but don’t have any times for any movies that day.. So idk…?

    How is everyone?!

Also happy birthday to @scree for yesterday! πŸ˜€

  • Still haven’t seen Star Wars. Was unable to scope out session times for Star Wars last night because net dropped out and was still gone this morning.

Still looking at imax, just because. Looks like I could maybe get to the 9am session on Saturday. But not sure if I’d be able to get over to Parramatta in time for lunch for Dad’s birthday, especially since trains appear to be screwed that day. Otherwise decent seats aren’t til the new year, pretty much. Hmmmm.

        • Maybe you didn’t hear me.

          Gold Class.

You know, where they bring the alcohol to you. Why go and get your own beers like some kind of savage?

          • But the film only had one sequence shot for IMAX JJ Abrahams said, so it’d be kinda pointless watching a film that was mostly shot for standard cinema in IMAX, right?

I mean I guess there’s always VMAX up here, whilst no where as good as IMAX, it’s still something?

          • Well for Sydney at least it’d also mean you get to see it on the biggest screen in the world. So that’s neat πŸ˜›

      • I’ve been to one of those things before, for one of the Lord of the Rings movies. The chairs seemed to drop below the balcony ledge thing when you reclined so you couldn’t see the screen, and having to get up and leave the room to go get a drink or whatever sucks. Also I don’t really eat/drink anything when watching movies anyway.

        Seemed like a waste πŸ˜›

        • Hmmm thats odd. The gold class ones I’ve been too have been in the main cinema, not a classist style. Whole cinema of Reclining chairs.

    • Anyone in Sydney should consider going to The Edge cinema in Katoomba, IMAX class screen, cheap tickets and great picture and sound, and last I checked they had tickets available for every session.

  • Saw Star Wars second time yesterday.

One thing that made me wonder
After escaping Starkiller Base, Leia and Rey seek each other out of the crowd and wordlessly embrace. They had not met each other before or even knew each others names. So what was that all about? Maybe they did know. Wife’s theory is they are continuing the OT story beats and Rey is Kyle Rens twin sister separated at a young age.

    • I stand by my theory that she is Luke’s daughter, and that Leia is probably the one who sent her into exile on Jakku to protect her from Kylo Ren.

      • I still like the idea that she was a youngling under Luke’s tutelage, but the family link thing (either Luke or Leia’s child) feels more likely in terms of story. I really do love that multiple theories are possible, though. Speculating like this is fun!

    • “Kyle Ren” typo made me laugh out loud. All I can think is that in the next movie The First Order can’t find Ren and have to run around the galaxy shouting “SEEN KYLE? HE’S ABOUT THIS TALL”

      • I was convinced his name was Kai Loren, until I noticed people referring to him as “Ren”. Then, I just thought it must be “Kai Lo Ren”… Didn’t know it was Kylo until I looked him up for more insight into his backstory.

    • Wouldn’t be surprised at all if Rey and Kylo turn out to be brother and sister. Been looking into the expanded universe a little since seeing the movie and it turns out that Leia and Han have three kids, the youngest Anakin, and a set of twins Jacen and Jaina.

Apparently Jacen (who they seem to have renamed Ben in The Force Awakens) turns to the dark side and is ultimately killed by his sister Jaina

      • The EU isn’t canon anymore though, and while it might make sense for the Solo kids to be twins in line with EU expectations, I think it makes more sense to move away from that.

      • Kasdan specifically said he wrote the script with no exposure to the EU, so I don’t think that’s it. I really don’t like the idea of there being another secret twins set, I think that’d feel like such a cop-out and it’s also way too obvious.

If Rey is Luke’s daughter (which seems possible but I don’t buy it) then it’d make sense that she and Leia might feel close.

Personally my theory is that Kylo is Luke’s son. Rey is Han & Leia’s. To conceal the fact that Skywalker had a son, there was a switcheroo. Rey is sent to Jakku under the watch of Max von Sydow’s character who will turn out to be super important, and Han & Leia’s raised Kylo. He found out about this and that’s what caused him to snap and turn to the Dark Side. Remember, no one knew that Leia and Luke were brother and sister except the two of them and Han (because she told him). Everyone else that was privy t that secret – Bail Organa, Obi-wan and Yoda, plus Vader and the Emperor via Vader – was dead. As far as the universe knew, there was one Skywalker, and he was a Jedi. He’d have wanted to keep his child safe, and where better than right under people’s noses?

The name is the big give-away. Ben. That’s a very, very specific name. Luke was the only one that knew Obi-wan as Ben. Despite the famous line from A New Hope, Leia never met him, only knew stories about him, and she knew him as Obi-wan Kenobi. Han met him but thought he was an ‘old fossil’. Why would those two name their son after the nickname that an old Jedi they barely knew used while in hiding? Meanwhile Ben Kenobi was Luke’s first teacher, his mentor and someone he greatly respected and trusted. It doesn’t make sense otherwise.

This would also explain why Kylo was so upset at the feeling of closeness that Rey had with Han – the ‘father she never had’. He knew. Han was his father figure, but not truly his father – Han was Rey’s father. He was jealous of her immediate bond because he’d never had the same thing.

        • Interesting theory, makes a lot of sense and personally I would rather this be the case than have them turn out to be twins.

          • If you want to get technical about them using bits of the EU then don’t forget that there was a character in the post-RotJ EU canon called Ben. Ben Skywalker, Luke’s son. πŸ™‚

While I think they were writing without regard to the EU, Lucasfilm does pick bits of the EU to include as canon. Star Wars Rebels recently canonized the Interdictor-class cruiser and a bunch of details around the B-Wing (such as it standing for ‘blade’ wing and being manufactured by Slayn & Korpil) so EU details may have factored into the new trilogy, just probably not major plot-affecting details.

          • There’s a flaw in the theory though.

Rey was officially born 11 years after the Battle of Endor, but Kylo Ren/Ben was born within a year or so of the battle, meaning there’s roughly a ten year difference between them.

Kills the twins theory dead, but also makes the switcheroo a bit trickier. Still might work for Kylo, but makes Rey being Leia & Han’s daughter implausible.

    • They had met hadn’t they? She at least knew she was Han’s wife, and presumably she was going to break the news about Han’s passing – but Leia already knew that (having either felt Han’s death or Ren’s “darkness” through the Force. That was the significance of that scene to me. The embrace was for Rey about the loss of (as Ren pointed out) the loss of a closest thing to a father she’d ever had – and for Leia, the loss of her husband and presumably (since I’m well on the side of Rey = Luke’s daughter) a familial connection that she is still keeping hidden for Rey’s own safety.

Though admittedly, Ren already knows about Rey’s powers and potential value so it seems like there’s no a lot to lose by revealing that secret… which now that I think about it, would be why she was the one sent to find Luke. Huh.

        • Yeah, I forgot she didn’t land til after the battle during which Rey was knocked out and taken by Ren. Still though, Rey had done her research. She knew who Han and Chewbacca were, she’d heard of the Falcon, it makes sense to me she’s know of General Leia Organa, though it’s slightly questionable that she’d know her on sight.

          • Because as I assume Rey is Luke’s daughter who he hid on Jakku for her safety, Leia has presumably been watching over her in Luke’s extended absence.

          • Maybe because she actually is her daughter and she’s been keeping tabs on her over the years. Or if she turns out to be Luke’s daughter and he asked Leia to watch over her. It’s all speculation at this point though, only 1 year and 5 months to go till Episode VIII.

Edit: beaten to the punch (sort of). Damn you @kermitron *shakes fist*

    • I’m in the camp that Rey is Luke’s daughter. But regardless, the thing to remember is that the Force is pretty strong with Leia too, so I would imagine that those on the light side know a kindred spirit when they meet one.

  • Just got the carpets cleaned, and Max is doing her best to sniff every fiber and look disgusted.
    Ah, cats.

  • Howdy all,

Weekend was a massive success. Flew in to Brisbane with my dad on Friday night for my mum’s 60th – she didn’t know I was coming, and was super surprised… but not as surprised as when she arrived at her surprise party on Saturday… Surprise!

Then Jetstar went and fucked it all up. Cancelled my flight just as we were about to leave the house, couldn’t get me on another flight last night, so I ended up getting on an early flight this morning and being late for work. Also forced to dress in casual, and totally unshaven. I’m going for that hobo chic look, but I don’t think I’m pulling it off.

Also managed to leave my book and 3DS charger at home (since I had a category 5 hangover on Friday morning). Fun times!

  • So there’s this bloke selling this Silverstone case on eBay that I want, noticed he specified local pick up only, so I messaged him on the off chance that he would agree to posting it to me, he said no. That was 2 weeks ago I asked. He’s relisted it 4 times now. I wonder should I message him again asking if would be willing to post it to me in the new year. Cause I am really interested in it. Since a) Silverstone stopped making it just this year & b) he’s asking a quarter of it’s brand new retail value & it’s in really good condition.

    • How much are you paying? I’ve had people that said local pickup only before and I offered to organize a courier to come pick it up from them, they generally said that was fine.

      • $50 is all he wants for it. I can’t see it costing me more than $20 or $30 via Fastway or TOLL. His excuse was “I don’t have time to pack it & send it” then maybe selling it at this point in time is not in your best interests if you only want local pick up, but that’s just my opinion.

  • Just got a message that the last thing I’ve been waiting on for my Secret SanTAY package has been delayed and may not make it before Christmas. Considering it was supposed to arrive a week ago, yeah, no shit.

On the bright side, someone is going to get to enjoy a second, slightly smaller Christmas in January.

    • Based on the number of posts happening with people saying I haven’t forgotten but need X before I can I don’t think you are the only one. Double christmas!!

        • I have major release due by the end of the year. So Christmas really hasn’t been a focus for me so doing family Christmas over the weekend was a shock to the system. We were fairly organised for it, but still having trouble parsing Christmas is this week.

          • I saw The Force Awakens last week, and (I’m not kidding) I have to now keep reminding myself that Christmas isn’t already done and dusted.
The kids will be pissed if I forget though…

  • I gotta ask, what’s the point of purchasing a tracking number on stuff with Aus Post when it just doesn’t get activated, it seems? I only bought a tracking number cause the parcel I was sending was going through as a letter, but I wanted a one cause of the value of the contents. I feel like i’ve been jipped πŸ™

The other package I sent, it;s tracking number works fine dang it.

  • My weekend in summary:

Saturday: Some stuff happened and it was warm.

    • Seen it twice already, want to watch it again at least a couple more times. Sah gerd!!!

Also, what’s the bet they’ll release the DVD/Blu-Ray on May the 4th.

    • So damned keen to go and see it again.

Incidentally, are you visiting over here during the holidays? Seems like a good excuse to go and see it again…

      • It just so happens that we’re headed up on the 24th and leaving again the 27th so we got a small window if you’re not busy? πŸ˜€

          • 2D – 11:00 am, 2:00 pm, 5:00 pm & 8:00 pm
            3D – 10:00 am, 1:00 pm, 4:00 pm, 6:00 pm, 7:00 pm & 9:00 pm

No idea how busy it’ll be, though considering it’ll be boxing day the answer is probably “Very”

          • Haha i could imagine!
Might chat more about it tonight with you on steam but i’m keen!
Also i’m not too fussed over 2D or 3D

  • Saw Star Wars on Saturday. Only screening I could find was a Lux ticket, so a 30 seat cinema with recliner chairs and complementary popcorn. Still got nothing on the $10 tickets for beanbags at the Pighouse cinema I first saw Phantom Menace at, way back when, but it was pretty good. Movie itself was alright.

Omg, I’m still reeling. Will have to convince my folks to go see it over the holiday break – there are a few scenes I want a second, closer look at. Really looking forward to finding out about Rey’s lineage, and seeing Ren’s maturation – he’s got potential to be a great villain, if he could stop destroying every computer he comes across. πŸ˜›

Failed at my resolve to finish SOMA over the weekend; instead I picked up Monster Hunter 4U that I’d had on my shelf for a while… Wow. From what I’d heard, the endgame is multiplayer-focused, so I’d ignored the series for a long time. But I’m really enjoying it so far. Only monster that’s bested me thus far was the Yan Kutku, but a lot of the fights have gone down to the wire. Basarios was freaking awesome. πŸ˜€

MH even managed to pull me away from Destiny all weekend… awww crap. I forgot to put the gunsmith orders in for my alts. *facepalm*

    • I think I gave up on MH4U after about 40-50 hours, the fights went from being ‘oh this is pretty tough but I think I know how to beat it’ to ‘Man… that’s intense, I don’t know if I can beat that guy’ to ‘OH GOD WHY IS HE STILL HITTING ME I’M ALREADY DEAD’.

I have now moved on to Pokemon… it is slightly less stressful.

Edit: That being said, what weapon are you using? I found the game alot more fun after I discovered how awesome the Insect Glaive was.

      • Yea, that’s what I’m kinda expecting. Hoping to get at least 50 hours or so out of it before things get too insane for me – I’m not under any illusion I’ll finish it.

Started with a greatsword (my staple through Dark Souls), but it felt slow and didn’t like the moveset; swapped to dual blades for a while but couldn’t do the damage I wanted, so switched to the hammer. I may not hit with every swing, but the X attack has a pretty fast combo (once you get the first swing out of the way), and the charge attack seems to have good potential for clearing groups of adds (jaggis, genprei, those ant thingies, etc). Still hilarious to see a genprei go flying when I hit it. πŸ˜›

      • We should team up and fight-slash-get-wrecked by something! πŸ˜€

I hopped into Destiny for a few minutes over the weekend to do the dailies, but I’m really not feeling the sparrow racing at the moment – the lack of incentive to do well, combined with the brute-force-the-RNG method of loot acquisition…

Only things I’m really after in Destiny atm are the Titan’s raid helm and the two new exotic chest pieces. Thanks to racing/hoarding, I’ve got infusion fuel to get any Titan helm that drops to 319, so I’m not in any rush to nab more racing helms. Not in any rush to hit 320, either – maxing at 318 on all characters suits me fine until they add content that requires 320 or higher.

  • I feel like christmas is gonna be good this year,
last year i spent christmas with my ex and her family at the beach in bowen and it was pretty lovely. But i was pretty rushed because i was starting work in cairns on the 4th of january and i didnt get to spend much time with my family or friends. But this year i get to see some friends in townsville and get to spend a few days with my gran and nonna and extended family. Then i get to relax by the beach in Hervey bay at my sisters house and then i get some time to myself before going back to work.

Lifes pretty good for ole rocketman.

  • Pretty good weekend. Went out with Pizza Thief on Friday night, wandering around Newtown going from bar to bar pretty much. Still don’t understand how it is that we managed to spend so much time talking. Ended up on play equipment on the way home because of course, managed avoid causing any injury to self or others somehow, despite the level of inebriation. A nice change. Then when we got back to hers, the same old guy as last time was sitting in the park across the road, just watching us with his dogs πŸ˜›

Saturday night, sister had some friends over for a catch-up. They decided they should do a Christmas photo. Then decided it should be a Santa photo. And that I should be Santa. And then that they should go to Kmart to get some crappy Christmas shirts. And that I needed to take them because I was the only one that was ok to drive. Then when we came out of the shop, they noticed that the Santa throne was just downstairs and pretty easily accessible, so we should just take the photos there in the middle of the shopping centre. The security guard came down and was kind enough to man the camera for us. His framing leaves a little to be desired, but did better than one of the girls who somehow managed to make everything impossibly blurry. Later on the boys were done with whatever they were out doing, so came to join. Had to do another run to grab them from the station, dressed in the Santa outfit again. They had the AU edition of CAH which I hadn’t seen before, ended up playing that. It was most of the group’s first time, and half of them were too fuddy-duddy. Most of the great plays didn’t win because they all came up when those ones were judging. Boo πŸ˜› Also, eggnog is great.

Sunday was get-stuff-ready-for-Christmas day. We’ve got several kilos of fruitcake (the big one alone is nearly three and a half), sister got the front room decorated, and then it was on with the traditional set of CDs to accompany us for crostoli making. Sister does the rolling and cutting of dough, Mum does the frying and I do the sugar coating and boxing. Seemed to go much faster this year for some reason.

  • @shane, Undad volume 2 just came in the mail. Thanks man, also that diary of Brett Buckley arrived a few weeks ago.

  • After checking out the best video game music article I put on the Splatoon soundtrack. Damn it, now I really, really wanna get back into it.

Too many games to play, and so many more that I want to get!

  • Alrighty because im bored at work and its approaching a critical mass of boredom where i use the soldering iron to give myself a tattoo lets play FAVOURITE MEDIA OF 2015
    Here are the rules
Pick a show, movie and song released this year that is your favourite.
Tv Show:Mr Robot, easily the most compelling tv show of the year for me, the tone was perfect, characters memorable and i just really enjoyed the ride. The use of music throughout was particularly clever
Song: The Hills-The weeknd, “but rocket a CHRVCHES album was released this year what the fuck man. ” True but i have had the weeknds album on repeat pretty much most of the last few months and i just think it is a amazingly solid album for the mood im in at the moment. CHRVCHES is always in my heart though
Movie:The Martian-Beautifully shot, beautifully acted and they played ABBA in the movie so my hands were tied. Seriously though.Best movie of the year.

    • Fargo S2.
      The Hills – The Weeknd.
Mad Max: Fury Road/Star Wars: The Force Awakens. If forced to pick one, probably Star Wars.

    • TV Show… Did I watch something new that was released this year? Ooh, Better Call Saul was released this year. I really enjoyed that. Looking forward to next season.

Music… Yeah I really don’t think I’ve listened to any albums that came out this year. Ben Folds’ “So There” album was ok. There’s a new Clairy Browne album but I haven’t heard it yet.

Movie… Agreed, The Martian. Loved it. Also Ant-Man.

      • Ant-Man was a suprise for me, i didnt know i was gonna love it as much as a i did. But it was a genuinely fun movie and so funny.

        • Yep, same. I went in to it thinking “PG rated Marvel universe? This is probably going to be pretty average” and came out of it ranking as my second favourite Marvel movie next to Guardians. Amazingly well done.

    • TV Show: Better Caul Saul, I think. Edges out Daredevil and Master of None, as well as Season 3 of OitNB.

Song: Are people still making music these days? (obligatory Grandpa Simpson)

Movie: Mad Max: Fury Road. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Star Wars was a great big shot to my nerd, but Fury Road was a much more impressive movie.

    • TV: Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailers
Song: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Soundtrack
      Movie: Alvin and the Chipmunks

      • A quick google tells me the movie is called “The road chip”

I dont want to bag on anyone who has the creative talent and forsight to realize there is a market for this but talk about beating a dead horse. Make some talking dog movie instead.

      • More seriously:

TV: I didn’t watch a lot of new stuff this year but Daredevil comes to mind and it was damned good, so that’s where my vote lies.
Song: Most new music, good or bad, tends to fade from memory a few weeks after I’ve heard it…but this year soundtracks have made a big comeback. Splatoons is amazing, as is The Witcher 3. Too many others to choose from, really.
Movie: Similar to TV, but even if I had seen more stuff this year I think I’d still be putting my vote on The Force Awakens. I’m still fanboying like mad about it and I don’t see that stopping for ages. This has really made me really how stupidly big a fan I am of all things Star Wars…except for the Maul arc in The Clone Wars. Ugh.

    • TV: Don’t know if it’s just because I’m watching it now but Ash Vs Evil Dead is just so consistently fantastic. It’s goofy fun that’s the most entertaining watch I’ve had in a long time.

Movie: As much as I’m still riding a Star Wars high I think Mad Max was the better film.

Music: er, I’m a cranky old geezer when it comes to music and genuinely dislike modern music. So I guess it would have to be off the only two albums I’ve like this year so as far as sing goes it’s either The Day Is My Enemy – The Prodigy or The Handler – Muse.

    • Holy fudgsticles, looking now and I don’t think I have watched a movie that was released this year.
TV shows: Maybe because it is recent by maybe Jessica Jones. To date only seen the first episode so hard to say.
Music: Nothing recent really springs to mind. Sure I’ve heard some new stuff but nothing that

I am the worst at this game

    • TV show: would be Moon beam city such a funny cartoon in similar veil to Archer if Archer was 80s laser rave also has Rob Lowe and Will Forte.

Music: I would go with Macklemore’s Downtown as its so damn damn catchy! And I know almost every word

Movie would be The Martian it was beautiful and smart while also comedic and feelsy

      • You know i really wanted to dilike that macklemore song because its literally just genre hopping to appease the masses. but the chorus is just so great. I would like a song where they sample that chorus on repeat.

    • Oh good, you asked for favourites, not best on a relative scale.
TV: none of it. I’ve enjoyed the catch up on older series more than anything released this year.
Music: none of it. I’m deaf, old and grumpy. I don’t listen to music released this year.
Movie: Star Wars is going to edge out Mad Max. While I think MM is a better movie, SW will probably make it onto my very short list of movies I’ll watch more than once.

    • TV show – The only thing that comes to mind that I’ve watched this year is Daredevil

      Movie – STAR.WARS.

Music – hmmm, I’m not a bit music person. Maybe something from the new Muse or CHVRCHES album.

    • Music: CHVRCHES. No, I won’t specify further, fuck you.

TV show: What the hell have I watched this year? You know what? Fuck it. Steven Universe. Far from the best show I’ve watched this year, but it’s fun, and I like fun. Fun is fun.

Movie: This one’s kind of a challenge. I want to mentally distance myself from Star Wars, since it’s so recent that I can’t view it properly. I liked Fury Road, but was cooler towards it than most, Inside Out and The Martian were both great, but I don’t know if I’d rate them as my favourites, and most of the rest was mid-tier crap that I enjoyed for various reasons (Spectre, Ant Man, Jurassic World, Age of Ultron, et al.).

So uhh, yeah. Non committal answers are the best.

    • TV: Um, too hard. Either The Leftovers/Sense8/Jessica Jones/Please Like Me/Bloodline/Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt/Show Me a Hero/Mad Men. Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―
Song: Adele’s When We Were Young Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―
Movie: Really enjoyed the new Star Wars, but also loved Ex Machina and Mad Max. Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―

    • TV Show: Sense8, easily! Loved every minute of it.

Movie: Toss up between The Walk and Flying Colors. Wasn’t expecting anything from either of them and they both turned out to be fantastic. The surprise makes it better I think.

    • TV: Ash vs. Evil Dead. This is such a gem.

Music: Haven’t really bought much music this year, but Book of Souls was definitely the best.

Movies: Tough choice. The Martian was obviously fantastic, but then so was Fury Road. Trainwreck was great but probably not the best…

… but I haven’t seen Star Wars yet, so I can’t make an informed decision here.

    • TV: Probably Ballers. Can’t wait for season 2.

Movie: Inside Out. Star Wars and Ant-Man were pretty good too. The only other movies I saw this year (that I can remember) were Fast and Furious 7 and Pitch Perfect 2.

Music: The Wombats. CHRVCHES had a few good songs though.

    • TV Show: Mr Robot.

      Music: It Follows soundtrack

Movie: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. As much as I loved Star Wars (saw it 3 times in 24 hours and will be seeing it again this week), I don’t even think it’s in my top 5.

    • TV: Sense8. Daredevil and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt came close… I guess I like Netflix?

Movie: Haven’t seen too many this year (maybe 5 or 6?) but Inside Out is the best of what I’ve seen.

Music: Glitterbug by The Wombats. Narrowly edges out What Went Down by Foals. They’ve been on repeat constantly since release.

    • TV show: Dunno. I guess I got pretty into Orphan Black earlier in the year? Other than that I guess some anime thing but I feel like this was a weak year for anime. EDIT: Oh wait, Daredevil was actually 2015 too wasn’t it? That, then.
Song: I don’t really do ‘songs’, I do albums, because I’m old. But honestly nothing grabbed me this year.
Movie: Mad Max. Star Wars is great and there were some other solid films but Mad Max shot right into top ten of all time for me, maybe even top five. Rewatched it many times and every time I do I notice more stuff. It’s so dense, and yet so tight. And it’s so completely unconventional. Still stunned that it was able to be made and released in 2015 with such a high budget and yet be such a risky and unique film. Also that fucking color. The pop of it, the vibrancy. The color treatment alone makes it the most striking thing I’ve seen in ages.

    • Show: Fargo S2. Just, so good.

Song: David Bowie: Blackstar. Bowie has distilled peak Bowie into a single song and it’s wonderful.

Film. Mad Max Fury Road. WITNESS ME

    • Favourite TV Show: Into The Badlands. Cheesy as hell, post apocalyptic American South meets Kung Fu. Some amazing fight scenes make it incredibly worthwhile. Unfortunately the last episode for the season is tonight.

Song: Hard to pick. I’m leaning towards Scars by Metal Allegiance because it features Cristina Scabbia but any song from that album is pretty great. Also Muse, The Darkness and Stryper albums came out and they’re also pretty great.

Movie: Mad Max Fury Road. Hands down my favourite movie of the year. Saw it twice in opening week, which I’ve never done before. Been a really good year for movies I like though. The Force Awakens is second, then Ex Machina, Inside Out and The Martian, with Kingsman not far behind.

Damn I’ve been spoiled this year with some great stuff.

    • TV show: Jessica Jones I think, though there are a bunch more old TV shows I am catching up on now that Netflix is a thing. I prefer Continuum and Supernatural to JJ but neither were released this year.
Music: eh? I love all music but not much that has been released this year. Adele -Hello?
Movie: loved Mad Max soo much but I think it has to be Star Wars simply for the nostalgia value. Watching it honestly took me back to being a little kid and cuddling up with mum and dad while watching the original trilogy on vhs.

  • Oh.

    Oh no, what a shame.

This is the greatest tragedy known to man.

There was a fire related to the air conditioning at my work, so I probably won’t be able to work for the rest of the week (or at least a day or two).

    I am truly heartbroken.

This is the end of days.

        • I thought you may have meant that one but didn’t see much argument in it.
The biggest issue with it is probably the title doesn’t match the intro.
The best games to play over christmas != The best game to play for families that argue

          • No arguments. Looking at the comments I think people only looked at the title and the games listed. Which is exactly what you’d expect with something in that format.

And yeah, I didn’t pick the title. My suggestion had something to do with bickering in it.

          • Write another articles with co-op games and see if they call it “The other best board games to play over Christmas”

    • Whenever it comes up, I feel like I must be the only person on the planet that doesn’t like The Resistance or its many other forms. I just have never been able to see the fun in it. It seems to self-select toward a certain type of player and it also can easily be dominated by certain types of personalities that end up making it feel like they’re playing the game for you. I guess I subscribe to the a-game-should-be-an-series-of-interesting-choices and I’ve never felt like I was really making interesting choices at all while playing it.

My family is ridiculously hard to find a good game for. My sister is stupidly competitive and refuses to play games that involve any form of co-operation. The only way she truly enjoys playing games is if she can crush everyone else utterly. My Dad is a planner and a deep thinker so really enjoys stuff where he makes tactical decisions and plans things out 4-5 moves ahead constantly, so gets frustrated if anyone takes time on their turns. My Mum tends to like stuff that’s fairly simple – she is usually fucking good at stuff if she pays attention to it but gets overwhelmed by anything too complicated and will seize up and stop thinking. And I know some stuff I will end up playing people’s turns for them (super bad at doing this in Carcassonne, as a result of having played it so much)

I’ve tried a ton of stuff and just nothing has clicked for everyone. Hoping to try them on Splendor at some point over these holidays, I feel like it might have the potential to work. Basically needs to be a strictly competitive game which involves planning moves 3-4 turns ahead, but has really simple mechanics.

      • Whenever it comes up, I feel like I must be the only person on the planet that doesn’t like The Resistance or its many other forms. I just have never been able to see the fun in it. It seems to self-select toward a certain type of player and it also can easily be dominated by certain types of personalities that end up making it feel like they’re playing the game for you.Man. My friend tried to get to pick up a copy of Avalon for him just the other day, and this is almost exactly what I said to him. Not at all alone πŸ˜›

      • I’m very much a fan of games as interesting choices. With social deduction games, the decisions are made about the other players instead of the actions. There are still choices to make with your actions: voting, team selection, pass/fail (as a spy). Then you have to navigate justifying/bluffing through your actions.

The interesting choices are there. They’re just very different from what you’d see in say a worker placement or Stefan Feld game.

With that being said, they’re not for everyone. That article was specifically about games to argue over. I’m hugely biased against anything involving a moderator which is why The Resistance has to be first on that list.

Splendor sounds absolutely ideal for your family. Simple with many lines of play.

    • Hello, my name is Nobody. I only read the intro. I don’t need to give my family any more excuses for bickering, thank you. πŸ˜›

    • The thought occurred to me at the time that pretty much exactly that (especially because of the kylo reference to empire data) would have made a perfectly good explanation to put in the movie instead of just being compelled to wake up Because Plot

      • I feel like it would have worked better if there was a hint of response to BB-8 from R2-D2. A light going up, the whine of a servo, something like that, but then, for all I know there could have been and it was just really subtle, and I’d rather something subtle than a lingering shot on R2 as his eye-light lit up. I’m just assuming that there isn’t even the barest hint.

        • I didn’t see anything, and the linked story shows that it’s coming up in interviews as a not really explained thing, so it’s probably just a small misstep by the director. Eh, movie ain’t perfect but it was entertaining.

  • Star war haiku review
    I like the movie.
I didn’t think they could do,
    but they did, and well

    Jesus I can’t do poetry

While I really did enjoy it, it was just crazy to think they’ve made a formula of a film saga without a formula. The last six films were different in every way, but this followed a path already walked. I guess I’m glad they did it – and they had to from a business point because this film was simply testing the waters for a multi media decade spanning franchise.

Also there were some fantastic shots in there, and while there were no stand out pieces the score was great too.

  • Apparently when some people get butthurt and have a grudge, they really hold on for their desperate lives.

So I’ve been test streaming since I got faster internet and it didn’t take long for a group of people that hate me to find it and start acting like dicks. I’ve been trying some Halo: Reach and the group was watching me to know when to search and matchup. The second they’re in the game they immediately start insulting my views and opinions on Halo that I said years ago and don’t care about anymore.

    • I don’t know how the matchmaking in Reach works, but can’t you just cut the stream until you are in the game, so they can’t queue at the same time as you?

      • I didn’t even know they were waiting for years for me to start streaming to jump in to attack me. I thought by now they would have moved on to Halo 5, which was designed specifically for their only gametype.

    • That’s… a really impressive and very specific grudge to hang on to and orchestrate a coordinated response to. Wow. Impressively sad.

Everyone knows multi is shit and campaign is where it’s at anyway…

  • Guys.

It’s SECRET SanTAY. You’re all leaving out the secret part. *chews nails agitatedly*

    • I assume mine will have my name as a billing invoice, so that when they hate it they know to never speak to me again.

      • I am not sure if mine will be the same. I asked them not to put my name in cause gift… but who knows how well they can read.

    • I’m sorry! /o\ I left them a note. I thought it was okay to know who it is when they get the present. My bad.

    • I DIDN’T, although probably at this point I am the only person that didn’t put their name on their Secret SanTAY gift so it’s easy to tell it was me. =P

    • You’re not my real dad, you can’t tell me what to do!

Also, be quiet or i’ll at some point get a Christmas present to you πŸ˜›

    • I’m pretty sure I left off all identifying details. Except for when I tweeted that I’d posted it… but then I’m confident they don’t follow me so I’m in the clear. Except for this response. Redact the post! β–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆ is β–ˆβ–ˆ β–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆ β–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆ and β–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆ β–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆ β–ˆβ–ˆ

  • The worst thing about Star Wars right now is that they fucking flushed the EU down the toilet but the only novels available to replace it are written by a fucking hack that’s on par with the worst of the people that worked on the old EU, and written in a style (present-tense narrative) that’s absolutely impossible for me to enjoy even if the writer wasn’t shit.

    • Hah! Man I’m so not a fan of present-tense narrative. Really testing my memory to think of any works I’ve enjoyed that use it. (With the exception of porn.) Makes me wonder if that’s just because everyone uses past-tense so it’s what I’m familiar and comfortable with, or if there really is just something deeply flawed with present-tense.

  • Heh, I tweeted just before that I bought Kane Hibberd’s photography book ‘Kanye Lens vs Soundwave’ & some Kanye West twitter bot favourited it. I guess that goes to show the twitter bots are just mimicking his attitude that any mention of the name means it’s about him haha.

      • Its funny because i was talking to some telstra guys in cairns and because of their absolute monopoly on the communications in this country when the government contracts come up for tender again, literally nobody, not even telstra tenders for the maintence of regional cell towers, then because nobody tenders and telstra is really the only one with the infrastructure or knowledge to do it, they are basically paid whatever they ask to do it. There isnt really any solution to because telstra has the network knowledge, even if a international came and tendered telstra would still have to play a massive roll because they set the shit up.

Telecommunications knowledge is very very limited in this country and there is a literal goldmine at the end of the shitty copper rainbow for anyone who wants it.

    • Naw, they sold is “as is,” it’s just our current PM’s shitty NBN relied on “as is” rather than it being replaced with fibre.

It’s frightening how poor the whole process has been

      • Not Telstra’s doing at all, just a really terribly thought out plan by the government. So much wasted money.

        • Don’t you see? This was the plan all along.

Way back when NBN was first floated, the Liberal position was that Telstra should improve the network themselves. They haven’t changed.

Right now, ‘NBN’ also includes the High Frequency Cable that Telstra operates. And Optus’ network has been rolled into it and presumably fixing up the shitty cable will involve Telstra taking over management of Optus’ network too.

In a few years, watch as NBN corp is privatized, then immediately taken over by Telstra who then own the entire broadband infrastructure again.

    • It’s pretty surprising how bad government is (or can be) when it comes to contract law. The things I could tell you (but won’t, in a public forum)…

  • @shane Got my Undad today also! It managed to get in before the rain really got going. Also the spine survived the trip intact too, which I continue to be surprised about.

      • Exactly my reaction.

I went to Star Wars to enjoy a fantasy/scifi movie set in the SW universe, not to go as a film critic.
I enjoyed the hell out of it, must go see it again.

I’m sure there are massive plotholes and problems, but you can pick the shit out of Citizen Kane if you spend enough time on it (I had to for a film school assignment years ago, totally destroyed the movie for me), and if you watch the original films as a critic, they probably suck too.

I love this new movie, am avoiding reviews as I’m pretty sure they will just piss me off πŸ™‚

        • Yeah, I don’t agree about the critic thing.

Any time a movie makes me stop being engrossed in believing its world and makes me realize, “Huh? What? The hell is– oh, that’s right, I’m watching a movie,” is a negative, to me.

It’s not about ‘watching things as a critic’, just looking for things to pick out – it’s more about why the uncanny valley is called the uncanny valley in the first place. Something is not right here and your subconscious is screaming at you about it.

This is not about having a chip on a shoulder or being a sad sack.

I didn’t go into Star Wars looking to be disappointed, and I didn’t go into it looking for things to pick apart. I had my suspension of disbelief all primed and ready to go so that I could just get engrossed in that world and soak up all the pretty and the fantasy of space wizards and heroes and villains and spaceships and feel like a kid again.

And I really enjoyed it even DESPITE all the moments that it yanked me out of that world and back into this one, where plot decisions and character actions are about call-backs and other non-in-world factors.

My second viewing was more enjoyable because I knew what specifically to ignore, and could mentally ‘tune out’ all the dissonant bullshit and come armed with (utterly contrived) rationalizations to help things make more sense so I wasn’t getting yanked back to this reality despite myself.

Other people have better suspension of disbelief? Didn’t find contrived references jarring and out of character? Good for them. I wish I could do that. I would’ve had more fun, and what sad fucking cynical bastard doesn’t want to have more fun?

    • Namco Bandai must have been very pleased with how Tales of Zestiria went for them in the west on Steam too, because they also announced Tales of Berseria (next year’s Tales) is getting a Steam port for the west and they’re not releasing on PS3 (it’s PS3 & PS4 for Japan)

      • It just seems like a no Brainerd* to me, to develop games for all platforms. I get sometimes it’s an issue or the extra $$$ just aren’t there.

        Yay for the customer!

*autocorrect, I don’t remember inventing that word, but I’m amused.

    • Not controversial opinion time:
U2 made some decent music in there day.
Joshua Tree and Actchung Baby are pretty great. People just like disliking things its popular to dislike, U2 are the new nickleback.

      • To be fair, their last couple of albums from them were shit and Bono’s head is firmly wedged up his arse. But their music is still great. That pack has four absolute classics, one more recent piece that’s absolutely perfect for a guitar game (Vertigo has some great riffs) one ho-hum piece and a couple of stinkers to pad it out.

    • The schadenfreude has been delicious! Although he’s not in prison yet, and these types have a tendency to get out of trouble on a technicality and end up living a life of luxury in a tax haven somewhere.

      • The dude that bought the rights for Daraprim and then hiked the price by 5,500%. He is now in jail on securities fraud and has been kicked out of both of his companies… it is very satisfying.

        • Ah. I’d only heard the first bit. I am out of every loop πŸ˜›

Always great to see someone cop a karma boot to the face.

        • I have never felt delight from other peoples suffering, i would much rather see them learn to be a better person than see them publicly flogged. After all he is more than just a guy, his family probably received death threats, i dont know if he had kids but they would of been publicly mocked. I think we have to be careful to jump on a hate wagon for it takes you down a very shitty path. Maybe ive just watched a muppet christmas carol one too many times.

          • Usually I’d agree with you but read up on this guy. His entire life is one long string of shitty behaviour. He’s incapable of learning to be a better person since he already thinks he’s better than everyone else. Literally. He’s come right out and said it on several occasions.

          • We also can’t just excuse an incredible lack of ethics with the line “guy was just doing his job”. Even other pharmaceuticals were shocked at the Daraprim stunt, and pharmaceutical companies are generally not known for shining morals. And even if what he did with Daraprim wasn’t illegal, it certainly attracted enough attention to trigger the investigation into his business practices, hence the arrest.

Incidentally, this is exactly the same process that happened to FIFA – awarding Qatar the world cup was a decision that was so outrageous, it was impossible to ignore or excuse the flagrant corruption in the organisation. Once the US authorities started tugging at threads, it all unravelled.

          • Im not disagreeing that the guy was a dickbag, i just am not a fan of relishing in his misfortune. He fucked over alot of people and is probably not even a little remorseful. But I dont think we should enjoy that he is being punished.

again ive been watching too much star wars recently.

          • My girlfriend had the same perspective when Osama Bin Laden was killed. She believed that killing should never be celebrated, whereas I thought the killing of a renowned terrorist was worth celebrating; not so much as punishment for what he had done but because it prevented all the harm he was likely to cause in the future.

I mean, this guy is pretty much the textbook definition of the scum of the Earth. His removal from positions of power is likely to help ordinary people in their time of need, when they will once again be able to afford their essential medication. To me, that’s worth celebrating.

          • The celebration of Suddam and Osama’s deaths creeped me right the fuck out. I was happy to accept that them dying could potentially remove a lot of bad in the world (still a point of contention with a lot of people, but not relevant here) but the fact that people were partying over their deaths was incredibly sobering and made me realise that I don’t ever want to be in a position in life where I feel like I could do that.

Back on point, I’m having a laugh at Shkreli getting caught as comeuppance for being a dickbag, but when people go overboard about it it’s just unsettling.

          • At what point do people stop seeking revenge from the people who have wronged them. Once the wrong has been righted and the guy has been held accountable? Once he has done his time? He will forever be hated no matter if he changes or not, to me when we split everyone into “good” people and “bad” people we ignore that some good people can do bad things and those bad things go unrecognized because we are blind to them. Just like when all “bad” people do something good we are blinded to that because of hatred. The world is full of grey area and celebrating the downfall of a “bad” guy seems like just hate that is redirected into a more publicly acceptable form.

I will add that i could be completely wrong and i have been thinking alot about moral relativism lately and how good people can do bad things.

  • In other news, I know the Steam sales start tomorrow… but I am finding it impossibly difficult not to buy Total Annihilation right now.

      • Legendaries?
Well, I cleared out all 28 from the new games earlier this year.
This is now 3 from gen 4, making 31 total. Got 2 more left (Articuno and Zapdos) that I can catch in Soul Silver. Only other regular ones possible outside that are Kyogre (from either Heart Gold (gen 4) or Sapphire (gen 3 – that’s a whole new playthrough back on GBA though)) and Rayquaza (same 2 options, plus SS if I have the HG kyogre). I have sapphire and a working DS original, but I don’t have HG.

        Only other ones outside that:
Darkrai and Shaymin – diamond / pearl / platinum event long gone and buried in history, would need some sort of hack or cheat to access the encounter.
Arceus – diamond / pearl / platinum event that was never released. Hack / cheat to access, can’t transfer it forward as it’s not a possible ‘legitimate’ catch.
Mew – was only ever a Japanese event for emerald (Gen 3) – needs to be hacked / cheated in to emerald to access it now, and the legitimacy of a non Japanese one is questionable.

So, 31 / 33 of what I’ve aimed for with available gen 4 and 6 carts in my possession. 31/35 of regular ones available through normal play, 31/37 of everything ever possible in an English region.

General shiny count? I’m probably close to filling a third box, so as a rough estimate I probably possess ~90 and have caught / hatched ~105. This is just what I’ve done personally, I don’t count trades or distributions, only things with me as the original trainer.

Yes, I’m probably ready for a break soon.

          • Hmmm…

IF shinies are implemented in PokΓ©mon Go, I’d say it wouldn’t be so much of a reset thing as a farm the shit out of an area thing. I mean, it’d be pretty silly if you can only ‘capture’ one of any given pokΓ© given how much they’ve talked up the necessity of trading recently.
Basically, I don’t see what I do in the handheld games as being compatible with the kind of experience that PokΓ©mon Go will be. But we don’t know enough yet.

I’m hoping it’s not just going to be Ingress with a new coat of paint and some minor tweaks to mechanics, but there’s every chance it’ll fall more on that side of the line than the PokΓ©mon side. Capture wild pokΓ©s with the watch thingy and no interface? Having to find gyms to level up and battle? There are many ways this could become an idle curiousity due to being far too limited for the average player rather than a proper PokΓ©mon experience, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

          • I nominate a Pokemon GO TAY Vacation where we travel to one gym a year as a group and catch all the pokemon in that city! =O

  • I’m approaching Christmas with mixed emotions. My parents are in Bunbury having Christmas with my sister and her fiancee’s family, which is fine, as I’ve spent a few Christmases in a row with my parents and my sister deserves to spend Christmas with them. So I’m going to one uncle’s place (Dad’s youngest brother) for Christmas lunch, and going to Dad’s middle brother’s place for Christmas tea. Don’t get me wrong, both my uncles are awesome blokes, and I’ll probably get a couple of decent presents from them, but I’m nervous.

Why am I nervous? Well, as a few of you may remember, I have Aspergers Syndrome, and when I get overstimulated, I get very tense and can often lash out either verbally or worse, physically. I’m worried that I might have a meltdown and hurt someone either emotionally or physically. One of my triggers is people yelling at other people, and I know that one of my Auntys will be yelling a lot trying to organise my Uncle’s preparation of the meal, mainly because she’s frustrated she can’t do it herself.

I’m just hoping that my fears of a meltdown are unfounded and that I’ll survive the day without too many hassles.

    • Dude, that sucks, maybe if you know its gonna be a issue, just arrive a little later or offer your services so your aunty is less likely to wanna yell. Otherwise just be honest with your fam bam, they are family, if you cant be honest with them who can you be honest with. anyway i wish you luck. Merry christmas dude.

      • Don’t really have a choice on when I arrive as my uncle will be picking me up (I don’t drive). There’s not a lot I can do in the kitchen as it’s a small kitchen and my aunty is in charge of the kitchen even though she physically can’t do the work. She gets annoyed and is constantly telling my uncle what needs to be done, even though he knows exactly what he’s doing. In other words, my aunty is a backseat driver. They are aware of my AS, but I’m not sure whether they fully understand, hey I’m not fully sure that I understand. My main problem is that my escape from those situations is to mindlessly check my iPhone and Twitter and stuff, and then I get told off for being antisocial.

    • You can always talk to your aunty/uncle ahead of time and organise a safe space for you to go to if you start feeling pressured. It’ll let you remove yourself from the situation so you can have a breather.

      • I also use earplugs, I can hear people talking easily, but it takes the edge off people shouting, and clears away a lot of background noise.

        • Take out your headphones and tell them you hear them loudly as it is, and there is no need to shout.

With heapdphones people often assume they need to speak louder.

tHen again, no idea. My problems were/are different.

    • Hooray for family Christmas. I get to spend all day with my in law’s pointedly ignoring my presence as they do their usual shutting me out of their family (house is full of photos of my wife, kids, brother in law and his partner but none of me to the extent I’ve been photoshopped out of two of the photos with my wife and kids). My wife hates that it happens but she knows they won’t talk to me so she gets upset at me for not trying constantly to reach out to them. 14 years of dealing with it I’ve had enough so Christmas night usually is a fight between my wife and I.

      • Ok, well that puts my problems into perspective. I can’t imagine what that must feel like as I don’t have inlaws (or outlaws) and I get along pretty well with my family. Seriously, mate, I hope you survive Christmas.

        • Oh no, don’t get me wrong, mines just irritating and awkward. Yours sounds like a big bucket of stress for you. Is copious amounts of cider a solution? Each one chased by a slug of whiskey? Alcohol, the solution and cause of all our problems.

          • Not much of a drinker, as I suspect I’d be worse under the influence of alcohol, and I have an addictive personality. I did take alcohol last year, so maybe I should check if I should bring stuff this year. I think the stress is mostly me being stuck in my own head and overthinking things as per usual.

      • I was in the same boat for over ten years, I decided to go all Zen about it, accepted that they are total dicks, but that I love my wife, so I just smile and nod and be nice, and have no expectation of getting anything in return, other than the love of my life being way more relaxed and happy.

        However… to my inlaws:

But I manage to go stress free now, and can bathe in my on smugness of owning the high moral ground each Xmas ;^)

      • I hear ya. I have lovely in laws but my family are…let’s say…unstable at the best of times.

I get annoyed when my husband abandons me at christmas and goes to hide and watch the cricket or whatever, but I can’t hold it against him – they can be very hard to take for a whole day. I’m cracking open the hendricks at christmas this year.

    • The problem with anxiety is that it feeds on itself and worrying about something is usually far worse than it actually will be. I’m spoilering the rest because wall of text:

Firstly, if you have a counsellor or psychologist that you see about your Asbergers, then NOW is the time to go and talk to them about your anxiety. They can help you prepare, which is better than putting pieces back together in the new year.

It’s good that you know what is likely to set you off, so instead of worrying that you might have a meltdown, instead you need to plan ways that you can actively manage the situation to keep yourself calm. Remember that things like exercise are incredible for dissipating anxiety, and we often neglect to exercise in the festive season. So planning a walk or run early in the morning might be a way to kill some of that negative energy, and help you relax for the rest of the day.

Then, at the event, take activities that let you focus and stay calm without appearing antisocial. Take cards and play solitaire, or one of those adult colouring books (don’t laugh, they’re brilliant for keeping hands busy and mind quiet). Get a couple to share and a nice pack of colouring pencils or textas. Read a book. If there are kids, then bring something fun for them, like christmas playdough (it’s also good for calming sensory overload), or a box of lego, or bubbles outside in the garden. Get on youtube to learn a napkin origami and then spend some time methodically folding all the napkins for the table. Bring noise-cancelling headphones and your favourite calm-down music.

And if all else fails, then take yourself out of the situation. Find a quiet space and calm down. You can’t control other people, but you can control yourself if you plan ahead.

My youngest sister passed away 3 months ago, and now it’s christmas without her. My parents are not coping. Christmas has already been cancelled once and I’m still not confident they actually want us to come visit (but they want to see the grandkids). Christmas rarely passes without an incident in my family, but this one is going to be extra awkward.

      • Wow, I can’t imagine how I’d cope if I lost my little (only) sister. I hope you can get through Christmas without too much stress and that your parents can cope as well. The first Christmas after losing a loved one is never easy. Thanks for your suggestions. I think I’m going to be ok, was just stressing but being able to talk has helped a lot. I think my biggest worry will be not having my parents there as a buffer.

  • Secret SanTAY arrived today, all wraped up in Star Wars paper, going to wait till Chrissy to open it as I won’t have much else to open on the day πŸ™‚
Unfortunately I ran out of filament printing the present for my recipient, so I had to send them something else I am working on, hope they like it, and will forward on the print once some new filament arrives, everyone is out of stock of the good stuff!

    • You can tell Team Diaverik thank you for taking such liberties with my body there. I now know what awaits me 10 years from now…

    • Out of curiosity,

I get a feeling that the mustachioed person on the late night commercial in the bonus chapter is supposed to be someone. Are we allowed to know of the other special people that got character placements in the novel?

On a side note, Doctor @beeawwb is always responsible.

      • I don’t mind. All the likeness people know about each other, so I don’t think it’s a secret.

The guy on the late night TV show isn’t a likeness character.

BDKIAF and my brother are the cops that arrest Brett. BDKIAF appears as the same cop again at the start of Issue 8. Freeze is Uncle Phil. TheCracks is the psych who looks after Jason. HighPerformance and a dude from my work are the two older kids who call Jason over and recruit him into their bite-fetish gang. Beavwa (pet store manager) and (doctor) B-ob reprise their roles on TV recounting their experiences with Brett. Transientmind is Veronica’s date and (impossible to find EASTER EGG) is an actor typecast as the victim in every zombie movie shown in the Undad series. An old friend from another circle is Veronica’s larger friend. The kid of some other friends is Brett’s daughter in the petting zoo flashback. Cakesmith is Brett’s Uncle Robert. The dude carrying goodies around Robert’s farm in the last flashback is my father-in-law.

I think that’s everyone. Apologies to anyone I missed – I’m working from memory here.

        • That’s really cool how you’ve managed to work everyone into the story. It certainly makes me regret not chipping in a bit more for my own cameo but I’ll certainly set some aside for next time if you do another kickstarter. πŸ™‚

          • Appreciated, man, but I’m not currently planning another Kickstarter. Honestly, I’m hoping I don’t have to do that ever again. I’ll be sure to let you know, though, when I inevitably break that rule.

  • @shane Some book arrived in the mail with your name on it. It might have been sent to me by mistake? It’s called Undead or something.

  • Wow, they’ve finally added user playtime back to Elite’s stats. Well, it used to be on a separate stats screen back in the original beta, then disappeared for release. Looks like it’s getting added to the right hand panel now.

I’m scared to see where it’s at now πŸ˜›

    • I have no idea how much time I’ve put into it, especially because switching between active goals and just screwing around makes it super easy to lose your ability to track time.

I did manage to reach 5 million credits last night. Almost all my profit has been through bounty hunting, too. Loving the speed and firepower of the Viper MkIII!

      • I sold my discount Clipper the other night (bought it after a community goal got a 20% discount, back before Powerplay and Li Yong-Rui’s power-wide outfitting discounts), so I’m sitting on about 25 million now. That’s all been gathered by bounty hunting and mission-running in my Sidewinder, especially assassination missions. At least, back when I could still do them πŸ˜›

Think I’ll need to jump on and examine my stats, try and figure out whether it’s worth trying to press on or if I should just jump to the DBS. Although for the time being I’m mostly just planning on roaming planet surfaces and hoarding materials.

        • I liked the look of the Clipper but after blowing up tonnes of them as bounties it’s kinda ruined my impression of them πŸ˜›
Other than wanting to try out a Python I don’t really have a plan for what to switch to next. The Asp Explorer looks like a decent ship, and they’re a pain to take out in 1v1 proving their performance is decent, but they almost sound OP? Pixel told me the other night that they’re insanely popular so that gives credence to that theory.

          • Yeah they are pretty popular. They’ve got good hardpoint placement and seem to be able to take a beating. Plus they sound pretty cool too.

You should check out the Asp Scout, that thing can dance. Seems like it might be a little on the squishy side though.

          • Yeah, I was weighing up the Explorer and Scout. I really do like having good manoeuvrability which gives the Scout a lot of points, but I can’t stress how much of a beating the Explorer can take, and having so many friggin’ hardpoints shooting at once means one misstep and it beats the shit out of me. I can take an Anaconda with little or no help if I dance away from its front, but Explorers I’ll either wait for help or not bother.

EDIT: I forgot about the Vulture…hmm…

          • That’s interesting, I find Asps not that bad to take down. Although I guess Sidey’s got more manoeuvrability than the Viper, so it’s probably easier to keep out of their way. Can’t remember what the Viper’s speed’s like but I assume that’d help you keep up with the Anaconda, that seems to be my biggest problem with them. Either can’t stay far enough away from them or can’t keep close enough to stay safe, then get shredded unless there’s other targets around to distract them.

            Also pfft, Vultures πŸ˜›

          • My speed without boosting is about 310m/s, and if I pump points into my engine the boost recharges fast enough that I go up to 400, then drop to 375 before boosting again. It’s seriously fast for what it is, and this is half the reason I won’t go for the newer Viper. It’s slow and sluggish.

With the Vulture, the idea of becoming a headhunter in fights sounds like a lot of fun for me. It seems like it could easily be set up to take down the big bounty targets with some well placed shots. Though I think I prefer the potential adaptiveness of the Asp, with so many hardpoints you can cover a lot of options and have decent ammo reserves for long runs.

          • @rize I’ve just been reading this thing on ship sizes and roles with the new hull reinforcement balances and in response to some guy’s complaint about them. It’s been an interesting read, I like the idea of there actually being a scissors/paper/rock relationship between the different sizes.

It kind of sucks that it makes the most sense to just stick to lasers, for the sake of not having to return to base for restocks or never running out of ammo before you’ve managed to take down a huge bounty. I’d like to play around with other weapons more, fixed multicannons are pretty fun with how you have to lead your shots and everything. Actually that’s what I like a lot about CQC, you get to play around with more things because ammo limits just don’t matter any more. Though of course I say that having settled on burst lasers being pretty much the best thing ever.

          • Coincidentally i picked up an Asp Scout (mainly because it looks like the Ghost from Star Wars Rebels… i mean COME ON LOOK AT IT! :P) last night and i can confortably say it’s my new smuggling ship! It can’t top my Cobra for speed, but then again, nothing can…. But 350 under boost is not too shabby and it can dance around most ships to avoid scans… good fun!

    • Retroactive time as well or just tracking from now on? It’ll be interesting if it’s able to track back to when we all started playing. I won’t be beating my 1072 hours on X-Com, my 667 on Borderlands 2 or my 492 on Arma 3 but it’ll be pretty high I suspect

      • Retroactive, yeah. They’ve been tracking it the whole time, just haven’t had it exposed to the players. Seen a few guys with like seven weeks of playtime so far.

Wondering how far back it goes, I guess it’d probably go to the last wipe at the end of Beta 3/start of Gamma. Last I remember when we still had the separate stats screen I was somewhere around 168 hours, so it’ll be interesting to see what I’ve done on top of that.

    • I’ve apparently put more than 3 weeks in… Which equates to something like 550 all up… NEED TO PLAY MOAR! πŸ˜›

  • Internets question: Is anybody here with Exetel? Their Unlimited 100/40 NBN plan is $10 cheaper than TPG, so I’m giving it some serious consideration.

        • This is the only – the only – real issue I have with my place, it won’t ever get NBN for the foreseeable future, and this is the best I can get, it’s stable for playing games but when it comes to getting them off Steam/Origin, blergh such a long wait!

          • It’s not. Not at our house anyway.

All the automated maps say we should be eligible and in area for ADSL2+, but then when you get to the specific checks, the only companies that could even find our house at all were Telstra and TPG.

          • Considering we’re talking about companies that just could not process the idea that a farm doesn’t have a street number (I was helping my sister get her house connected) I’m not even remotely shocked.

  • Decided I’m going to go and buy a new outfit for Christmas Day. I think I’m going to get a Star Wars T-Shirt and a new pair of shorts (29 degrees, I will wear shorts). Hopefully having a new outfit will make me feel good about myself and will negate some of the stress I’m likely to feel.

I’ve seen the film twice now and much like Red’s reaction, I too love the film. It’s just so much more entertaining than the Prequel trilogy and I even went back and watched them again this week to verify. In fact, when I first saw Menace, Clones and Sith back in cinemas I probably didn’t dislike them as much as I did after rewatching them. Young and stupid, I was. *in Yoda’s voice*

I’ve now read multiple people’s opinions and the consensus is that the new film is really A New Hope 2.0. Except that it’s not. We get so much more than just that. There’s elements of ANH however there’s also the villain reveal – something that doesn’t happen until Empire in the OT – and going into the film I even pondered whether they’d leave this until Episode VIII.

If I had to nitpick I’d simply say that Adam Driver looks nothing like the offspring of Carrie Fischer and Harrison Ford and that’s it. TFA is brilliant and George Lucas is a hack – he fluked it with the original film and has proceeded to ruin it by touching it ever since. And I only say that because I just discovered he didn’t direct Empire and Jedi – but he did direct all three of the Prequels.

    • people hate on the prequels too much,
Are they star wars, no not really
Do they have bad acting and shitty dialogue-yes
Do they have fun fight scenes with lots of lightsaber on lightsaber action mixed with some genuinely fufilling starwars moments HELLS YES
There is a LOT to not like with the prequels, but there is also alot of fun if you want to find it. @sernobulus and i had a grand old time rewatching them, i think we just appreciated them for what they were. Which is a bit of fun with a mild star wars flavour.

      • I don’t like the prequels, and have made a decision to not watch them again, but I absolutely agree that there’s too way much hate for them. It’s gone way beyond rational criticism, and the expiry date for outrage (if it was ever a valid response) has long since passed.

I also think people are way too quick to condemn Lucas as well, and launch personal attacks against him rather than against his work.

I’m glad that Disney have control of Star Wars now, because it looks like they’ll be doing some good things… but it makes me genuinely sad to imagine the circumstances and feelings that led to Lucas deciding to sell the rights to someone else.

        • The circumstances of Lucas writing the sequel trilogy stories so he could drive up the price of Lucasfilm before the sale to Disney? Very blunt, I know but my there’s a hint of truth about all this just being a business venture to him in there somewhere.

          • My opinion: He wasn’t trying to do that. Or at least, he wasn’t just trying to do that.
Evidence: He was already richer than God, and ended up giving almost all of the money he made from the sale to charity.

I genuinely believe he had a creative vision for the series, and the idea of a prequel series has clearly been on his mind since they added Episode IV to the original film (just after its cinematic release in the late seventies, IIRC). It just wasn’t realised nearly as well as it could have been.

          • I will add that yes Star Wars was his baby and letting go was likely extremely difficult – as would have been for me were I in his position. However! If one of my creations ever blew out to the scope of Star Wars (uh.. what?) then I would have to accept the fact that others I have inspired have the ability to take that creation and turn it into something bigger and better than I could have ever done, no doubt.

          • Which is probably the conclusion he came to when he sold it. I just feel bad that he was not eased gently into that conclusion, but rather flung there by the full fury of nuclear rage from a world of butthurt nerds who turned on one of their idols with unbelievable suddenness and savagery. Despite what I think of the prequels, I now regret being a part of that pack.

          • It is a little sad, indeed. However thirty years is a huge amount of time and the Disney deal clearly intended to keep the toys and films going, just now in a course-corrected direction.

          • Fair criticism is fair. But (unpopular opinion time!) surely the time for that has pretty much passed. The TPM movie was more than sixteen years ago.

Film criticism, whose aim is arguably using one person’s opinion to influence the moviegoing or purchasing activity of another person, surely has lost most of its utility with regards to the Star Wars prequels by now.

          • We continually celebrate excellent movies for decades after the fact, why should the positivity of the criticism affect the duration of how long it’s relevant?

I.e. I will continually talk about how great WALL-E is on an emotional and technical level and how other movies should aspire to do more like WALL-E (fun fact: I compared certain technical elements of TFA to WALL-E.) – conversely I’ll continue to look at TPM and discuss examples of what movies shouldn’t do if they aspire to be good.

          • Because positivity is life-affirming and makes the world better. Negativity, especially of the kind you frequently see regarding the prequels, is corrosive and corrupting when held onto. Light side and dark side, #YodaLifeLessons etc.

But yep, I take your points and accept them.

          • @freezespreston I’d argue that a balance of both has led to the world being the way it is now. I’d like to cast a vote for a little (or a lot) more light side in the world.

I’m not really good at embodying this ideal yet, but it’s my personal development project for the foreseeable future.

          • Science says that matter won out over antimatter, so the world is the way it is now because there was a little more positive than negative. Hooray!

…unless it’s just what we happen to call and view as positive, but is actually negative /o\

          • My beef was more with refusing to release the Original Trilogy in any hidef format, and actively hunting down and destroying survivng prints.
His pig headedness about having the SE being the only surviving versions of the OT was what rattled my chain.
The Prequels were just bad movies, and really disappointing, but messing with the original movies and stopping the originals being released, well that was vandalism.

    • Yep, pretty much agree with all of this. I remember liking Episode 1 when it came out (I was … 17?) but then when Episode 2 came out I was decidedly underwhelmed and it took me ages to get around to Episode 3 (never saw in theatre). On rewatching I found myself completely bored by Episodes 1 and 2. They’re just so poorly made.

One of the comments I made about TFA was that JJ Abrams sat down and actually remembered to MAKE a film, rather than just putting together a series of disconnected shots and conversations and hoping people wouldn’t notice because “Star Wars”. One of the most important things to do when making a movie is MAKE A MOVIE and I feel Lucas forgot that point when making 1-3.

      • Episodes 1-3 were just weighed down with too much detail and too much Serious Important Stuff. JJ brought back the popcorn and it makes such a difference. He’s just genius at distilling the things that make a franchise unique, and then blending it with his own style.

        • If you want Calculon to race to the laser gun battle in his hover-Ferrari, press one. If you want Calculon to double-check his paperwork, press two. Enter now. Replace Calculon with Jedi and paperwork with Trade Federation Negotiations and Senate Hearings.

    • Eh, Lucas knew what he was doing. Star Wars always was nothing but a giant toy commercial and it was super successful at that. Granted they’re fantastic toy commercials I’ve fully brought into but Lucas was always about the merchandising.

  • Wow, nearly three hours to download the STEM SDK. Only 667MB, but this site they’ve used to host it is sloooooow aaaaaas shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

  • All these Star Wars posts! Finally I can click the spoiler tags!

All these Luke = Rey’s dad theories makes me wonder who the mother was? I for one would prefer a storyline where Rey was his most gifted padawan and he sent her into exile for protection. Something about how she got to Jakku just doesn’t make sense if it was his daughter; as there was someone holding her hand as a ship flew away? Seems like there’s a gap in the story that is yet to be filled before we can tell for certain. I’m also very curious as to how they build Kylo’s character; what did he learn that would be sufficient for a child to turn against his own parents and mentor?

    • After watching the scene she was left on Jakku very closely the second time the one holding her was the cranky thing handing out portions for the scrap.

      • Was it? Slave heritage? He doesn’t seem like “i’ll look after your kid” kind of guy? She did say she was waiting for her family implying she knows who they might be? Curiouser and curiouser. Can’t wait for the next instalment and the eventual 12 hour 6 movie marathon I’m going to have 6 year from now.

        • He doesn’t say I’ll look after you, he says quiet girl. Someone said it was Simon Pegg holding her so I made sure to look closely second time. Big bloated webbed hand and the same voice.

        • Seconding Freeze on this one. I took a pretty damn close look the second time around, too. Same conclusions.

    • I’m torn between the “Luke’s daughter” theory and the “Leia’s daughter” theory – I’m pretty sure she’s a Skywalker. Her “awakening” points to some prior training, perhaps repressed, which means she was likely trained by Luke. I want to see it again to get a better look at a couple of scenes – the flashback on Jakku, Luke’s reaction at the end, and Kylo’s reaction to learning of the “girl” who helped BB8 and Finn escape from Jakku – he seemed a little quick to latch onto her, which makes me wonder if he knew about a pupil of Luke’s he may have missed when he turned to the Dark. Or maybe he just felt a force-strong person with Finn and BB8 when they left, and that’s why he latched onto her so readily. *shrugs* Given the explanation for R2’s wakening, Ren’s reaction could be hugely important or inconsequential.

  • Spoilered cos.. well.. I’m sure you’ll understand..
Just back from the doc again. According to him, I have narcolepsy, 95% chance of bowel/colon cancer, problems with my bladder, issues with my cyst (and more investgiation once it’s been cut out to see if it’s infected by brain), and apparently my involuntary leg movements are as yet, a medical mystery. (Apparently it’s different to restless leg syndrome).
Next to mum passing on, possibly my worst day ever.

    • Jesus Christ man, I’m so sorry.

Any chance the narcolepsy/leg issues are related to the head cyst and will resolve once removed, assuming there was no secondary infection?

95% chance of cancer? Man, I’m so sorry. How long do you have to wait for confirmation?

      • Zero clue if the narcolepsy is related, but the latter I should find out on or after Jan 8 when they actually take a look.

    • Oh, no. That’s really awful πŸ™

I’ll have my fingers crossed for the 5% outcome and for a speedy recovery in all fields.

    • Well… fuck!
      I’m so so sorry man!
I realise that absolutely nothing i say will help you get through this, but just know that my thoughts are with you! Here’s hoping for the 5% or a quick treatment!

    • I’m still hoping for the 5% myself. What choice have I got really. Just as yet, all signs point to there being some sort of growth :\ No matter what it turns out to be, it’s not going to be pleasant.

  • Eugh. Went to check Facebook as a quick distraction from work, 2 minutes later I have backed the Kickstarter for Secret Hitler. Et tu, willpower?

  • I seriously feel like death walking at the moment. I have no idea why I’m so tired.
In other news, may have a new bookmark to show off in a few days

    • Upvote for the bookmark, not the dying bit.

Have you tried asking a doctor? My girlfriend was always tired a while back, turned out she had an iron deficiency or something similar.

        • Oh yeah that’d do it.

I always get hella tired when I’m sick – I like to think it’s because I’m using all my energy fighting whatever bug I’ve got, but it’s probably because I finally have an excuse for never getting out of bed.

  • Ooh, Rift SDK 1.0 shipping this week. Happenings intensify πŸ˜›

Ooh, and that puts the ball in Frontier’s court now I guess. Wonder how long it’ll take them to sort that out.

    • For the record, I encouraged him to do it.

Annnnnnd that makes me feel like a pimp lying in ambush in a dark alley while my employees drag johns into range…

  • So I’ve been playing the Uncharted series for the very first time with the remastered edition.

I don’t think the games have aged very well in terms of the gameplay mechanics? I’ve only finished 1 and am about 60-70% through 2 and the graphics hold up well but after playing the Last of Us which just felt so polished and the revamped Tomb Raider the game feels lacking? I enjoyed the story in the first game; shooting sections were more annoying than entertaining and I lost my way in exploring more than a few times. The second game feels a lot more polished; better movement and platforming and the environment directs you a lot better (i.e. camera swivels; highlighted paths, etc.), much better platforming puzzles absolutely loved the temples and the characters felt more fleshed out. However the shooting sections just became more annoying. Kind of feels like in this game the devs had an identity crisis between this being GoW or something like Tomb Raider. Atm feels like the games telling me to eat my greens with shooting sections before I can have my dessert being the exploration/platforming.

    • I’ve always considered face-shooting to be the dessert.

People like me, ruining your games for you.

      • But it’s just so bad! There’s never enough ammo for any of the fun weapons; the weapons themselves have no discernible feedback and for some reason he cant shoot anyone in the head unless you use a sniper rifle [email protected] Also Uncharted 2 saw the presenting of enemies/bosses that were just massive bullet sponges. Yeah sure a sleeveless army looking guy needs 8 cartridges of assault rifle ammo emptied into him before he gets knocked out cold. Not even dead! [email protected]

In comparison in the first game the enemies felt better to fight against but still annoying =P

    • Yeah, gameplay is definitely a bit simplistic now. Uncharted 4 looks to be adding some more complexity. πŸ™‚ Just enjoy the ride with these stories.

      • I recommend that instead of suffering through un-fun and dated gameplay which hasn’t aged well, turn to teh YouTubes for that sweet, sweet narrative goodness!

They make movies out of games, now! It’s only really ethical if you own the games, of course, but a Godsend in many cases. To hell with tiring puzzle bullshit and collectibles and achievements and reloading checkpoints for that one shitty bit and quicktime events and blahblah etc.

      • You can definitely see them trying out new mechanics through each game which fed the eventual polished product that was the Last of Us. It’s kind of cool to watch the evolution of a development team in that sense =]

To be fair to Naughty Dog up until Uncharted they were well known for Ratchet/Jax games.

        • I still absolutely love the first three games too, but I agree The Last of Us is Naughty Dog’s best work so far. πŸ™‚

      • Noooo!! My resolution this new year is to not buy any game I won’t finish! I bought it so now I have to finish it :@ *looks over at Darksiders 2 & Syndicate*……

    • It’s a bit rough playing them for the first time after you’ve played the new Tomb Raiders but I recommend sticking with it. Uncharted is fine but Tomb Raider really raised the bar on that sort of movement. It’s like going back to Super Mario 64 after playing Sunshine/Galaxy. A perfectly fine game that hasn’t aged badly as much as it’s just sort of primitive in some spots. The gravity of everything feels just slightly off and slow. I can’t wait to see what they do with Uncharted 4 on that front. With things bouncing back and forth between them and Tomb Raider we’re bound to see some really solid work from both.
Totally agree with the shooting. It feels like they just randomly spawn enemies around you (Gears of War deserves more credit for controlling the flow of cover based fire fights). Each encounter feels like it drags on for maybe two waves of enemies more than it should. It’s weird, it’s almost like two games. You’ve got this awesome story driven adventure game and then you’ve got this basic shooter that’s just beginning to learn how to use cover, and the game flips back and forth between them.

      • Yeah defs agree; I dropped the difficulty down to easy and found the shooting sections more bearable mostly cos I could just rush through them. Just started Uncharted 3 and this game feels significantly more polished than the last. The platforming feels so fluid and the graphics got a massive facelift as well. Looking forward to completing this one πŸ™‚

  • The more I think about it, the more I realise that the reason I did so poorly at this weekend’s Netrunner tournament was not because I had access to fewer cards than everyone else there. It was that I didn’t know how to play around the cards I didn’t have.

My decks are perfectly serviceable. Definitely not tier 1 but they have a plan and can execute it. Everything that I saw on the weekend that disrupted that plan was a pain in the ass. Not because I didn’t have the tools to deal with them (well, mostly I didn’t have the best tools to deal with them) but because I didn’t know the game well enough.

That being said, I really want to scrap my corp deck. I could buy a handful of cards to tweak it into one of the most dominant decks going around right now. I don’t want to do that. I want to try some of the other strategies out there. They look more interesting. More fun and more importantly, let me learn more about the game. The only problem? I need a lot more cards to do that.

I’m going to fall deep into this rabbit hole.

      • I’ve got 2x Core sets, so I’ve got three copies of every card that I own (except for the cards listed as one ofs on this list).

Since I stopped buying cards, they’ve released three cycles of Data packs (360 cards) and three Deluxe expansions (165 cards).

I’m fairly sure that a Deluxe expansion and two Data packs turns my mediocre Corp deck into something close to a tier 1 deck (another Data pack would mean I could copy a t1 list card for card). However I don’t want to play that style of deck and it will take at least one Deluxe expansion and more than 5 Data packs to get the cards to do what I do want.

Same goes for the Runner side. I can make something very close to a tier 1 or tier 2 deck with these cards plus a few packs. Hell, if I plan it right there’s some overlap between the two sets of packs I need. If I want to try more experimental decks, I need to get more packs and they’re very different packs.

On the other hand, I could just use the various unofficial online ways to play. At least that way I could figure out what I want to buy with some certainty. It does lose the magic of playing in person but I would improve much, much faster.

        • if you have the option of playing it online I think that is a better idea to at least see what kind of cards each pack has to help you decide which packs you should get and try to use them in matches, might save you a bit of money in the long run, no point getting other packs if you have no interest in the cards inside after reading them.

          • Pretty much every data pack/deluxe expansion has cards that are useful to some archetype. The deluxe expansions also don’t rotate out, so they’ll always be useful.

I’ll probably end up using as a bit of a testing ground but playing is person is so much more valuable to me. Mostly because it’s more fun.

    • Did I ever mention that time I read about 8, uhhh, rants? Let’s go with rants, in a row from return of kings? The first one I assumed it was a parody website, by four I wanted to cut out my own eyes, and by eight I was back to assuming that it was some sort of elaborate art piece on the stupidity of man. Wonderful website, a truly bountiful location of spite and stupidity. Nothing makes me feel smarter of more rational than dealing with places like that.

  • I’ve finally managed to have a few matches of Warhammer 40k Conquest with a friend of mine and unsurprisingly I had a lot of fun with it.

We had two games, he went Dark Eldar and I tried Tau, got absolutely crushed due to bad card draw unfortunately, lots of cards to help troops, but no troops to actually play, and I had so many resources too xD. If you don’t have the military strength to push back Dark Eldar early, bloody hell do they snowball with the commander ability of summoning a token unit every round along with them that do 2 damage each! It was at a certain point that there was nothing I could do and was forced to concede.

Round two he decided to try and stick with the Dark Eldar and I bring out the SPAYCE MAUREENS! This one was more even as we both started having a grasp on what we were doing, but we both still made misplays, that’ll just come down to practice. He started the snowball again, however Space Marines had a certain trooper that had area of effect damage, completely obliterating his swarm of critters and finally giving me an advantage as every enemy I killed gave me a resource token each (As per my commander’s ability), and then there was the planet ability that allowed both of us to bring a card out to the field for free, and I happened to have a Dreadnought in my hand xD. Having 2/3 Green and Blue victory world cards and the next one was a Green resource planet to capture, I threw everything I had at that planet to secure it. Victory was mine!

So can’t wait for Necrons to come out, this is already looking like something crazy and awesome.

  • Now there’s a few of us, I’ve added an Elite Dangerous column in the tay tags spreadsheet… πŸ™‚

  • @shane Negative feelings and emotions are what stops you sticking your hand in the end fire every time, literally and metaphorically. Problem is people don’t know how to handle or process them appropriately.

    • So many of our initial reactions are tied to a world we don’t live in any more. And the damn ones that bypass any thought process and make you react.
That said next time a ball comes flying at my head I’ll be happy for those ones

      • Instinct’s a funny thing.

For hundreds of thousands of years of human evolution, survival – let alone prosperity – demanded that we be warriors; any sign of weakness was an invitation for extinction at the hands of the strong. Then the advent of gunpowder warfare, the subsequent age of enlightenment and the industrial revolution, and eventually globalization meant that within a few measly hundred years – only a few generations, a blip in human history – most of us no longer need to kill. Not up close and personally, if ever at all.

Those of us born today are born with the product of hundreds of millennia of evolution: now-vestigial instincts for aggression and tribalism that, at our healthiest and most constructive, we sublimate through exercise, sports, and fantasy.
…All while incredulously wondering what purpose those instincts serve and what’s ‘wrong with us’ for having them in the first place.

        Gee, I wonder.

    • May I suggest “The Happiness Trap” by Russ Harris to anybody? It’s specifically about that… how “negative” emotions have a purpose and value and we shouldn’t try to eliminate them (which, our inability to do so, makes us unhappy!) we should learn to process them in a constructive and effective manner.

      • I like that, i think when i was at my lowest the negativity just felt so overwhelming, like thats all there was, being able to realize that constructive negativity was useful was probably my catalyst to getting better. Self improvement only happens when you realize what the problem is. I was deppressed because of expectation and when it wasnt met i felt cheated. I learned to stop expecting things and started to just enjoy them and i felt a whole load better. I might pick up that book and have a read and see if my self discovered enlightenment could of been learnt quicker πŸ˜›

        • I’m only on the third exercise myself, but once I’m happy to pass along my copy (you can download blank worksheets from their webpage) once I’ve finished reading and moved on to the companion app.

I’ll DM you the page that made gave me a real “Ah-Ha!” moment too.

          • I think i just need to realize when something is worth feeling.
Its funny they teach you critical thinking in school but they never teach you how to critically analyse your feelings and deduce wether or not its valid reaction or not.

          • I think it’s no coincidence that the method taught in the book is called “Acceptance and Commitment Therapy” πŸ™‚

    • Haha, I understand what you’re saying and I recognise the importance of balance in life. I wasn’t advocating the eradication of negativity or critical thinking or the very reasonable natural fear response. I just have a dream for the world where the scales tip just a bit more towards the positive, purely in those circumstances where holding onto the negative feelings is more destructive than beneficial (like, for example, inherited bigotry and racism, or holding a 16 year grudge for the Star Wars prequels πŸ˜› ).

  • So here’s an out of left field theory for the new Star Wars trilogy (contains spoilers for The Force Awakens and really dumb 99% unlikely to be true predictions for episodes 8 and 9).

Luke is Snoke. He has gone over to the Dark Side and the First Order is his thing. He secretly turned Kylo to the Dark Side and used the guise of Snoke to recruit him as his Sith Apprentice, and made the others think he was just devastated over his “failure” when he went into hiding. He planted the Vader mask for Ben to find and made him think he was destined to continue Vader’s legacy as a “Knight of Ren”.

Now Luke plans to recruit Rey and train her under the guise of Jedi training. At the end he will get her to face Kylo who he is also training in secret, and get her to destroy him to complete her training and try to turn her to the dark side. Rey will realise what’s happening and refuse to kill Kylo. She will instead save him and turn him back to the light, they will then team up to defeat Luke.

  • God shit damn it. I had about 600 words written up about something emotional that happened today, and now it’s been swallowed. It took half an hour to write the damn thing, and now it’s gone. I should have copied it into a word document before posting. Argh.

  • Dear Secret SanTAY (part 2)

Do you remember the best thing about X-Wing vs Tie Fighter? It’s not the game itself (though wow, nostalgia for sure!)… but the fact that the game CD is actually also playable as an audio CD! Half an hour of pure blissful medley of the Star Wars trilogy soundtrack’s action sequences. HEAVEN.

    Thanks again! <3

  • Was struggling to think what I could get for my sister for Christmas. Then suddenly thought hey, board games could be a good idea. Then couldn’t think of anything, and spent ages scrolling through searches. Gonna go down to Gamesmen and pick up both Sushi Go and Hanabi for her. Sorted!

And shouldn’t even have to go out on Christmas Eve for once.

    • Sushi Go is a brilliant game. Played it with friends a couple of months ago, and it’s so much fun. Quick game too, so you can get a few rounds in before it gets stale.

  • I knew it, I *knew* I was jinxing myself by saying that. Just realised I have neither thing nor clue for both Mum and Dad.

I hate Christmas and all its forced thoughtfulness.

    • I have no idea what to buy my sister. I’ve grabbed her board games in the past, but I’m not sure she’s ever played them, so that’s out, which leaves, what, a pile of tears?

          • That’s ok, until she outright tells you that she doesn’t like them you get to just keep pretending that you think she likes them and you’re doing good.

    • Yeah but it’s not winter here so I can’t participate! THAT’S MY EXCUSE AND I’M STICKING TO IT!

    • Their definition of “Just Cause Collection” bothers me since there’s more than 2 in the games series now damn it!

But holy shit that’s a good pack, I have all those games so damn πŸ˜›

  • Hey guys. I dreamt of a game last night. Bear with me please.
It was a racing game where 8 races raced against each other, but, 4 raced the track forwards and 4 raced in the opposite direction. The aim was to complete in the fastest time, without smashing into the oncoming racers.
When I woke up I thought, that sounds like a pretty interesting game.

    • Sounds like it could be interesting. Kind of like a lot of the burnout series where the track loops back on itself so you have cross traffic, but a level more intense.
Was it done from a 1st person, 3rd person or top down view? Perhaps as a top down view but if it is an 8 person race maybe you have 4 teams of 2 people, one racing in each direction. With the final result being the sum of the positions of both players on the team.

    • Make the vehicles trucks. The roads icy. 1 side carrying coke and the other carrying mentos. Could be fun. Have little cars as obsticles too. lol

    • I could see that being amazing.

What if it was 2v2v2v2, with 1 player from each team racing each way around?

What if it was Rock ‘n Roll Racing style, and you could equip weapons to fight against the other players. You could have a big plow on the front of your car, and if you hit the guy coming in the opposite direction you send them flying! It would be pretty amazing if you could coordinate an attack on a car with your teammate coming in the opposite direction.

      Someone please make this.

    • Also… why do you get to dream about games, and I am stuck with dreaming about going to work. I wake up, relieved, until I realized the nightmare is real and I have to go to work.

Gimme counter-clockwise-battle-racing dreams any day of the week.

      • Apparently they did a study and found that people who play video games have less nightmares and tend to be able to control their dreams. I have that ability, Some of my best dreams have been nightmares about zombies that I’ve then turned into video game like dreams =P

        • Well I don’t know if dreaming about work classifies as an actual nightmare… but playing video games in my sleep SOUNDS AMAZING.

          Totally not jealous or anything.

          • It’s happened teen and entering adult life. After that it stopped. I didnt get the same quality of sleep that I used to and barely any dreams to nothing did I actually remember. Untill not too long ago. Lucid dream. I believe I’ve had one, but can’t really say for sure. Memory can be tricky.

Now I remember. Kicked a zergling-like dog and woke up in pain. Realised I kicked the wall.

    • Sounds interesting, but it might be difficult to balance it out unless the course is a mirror image of itself, so they’re effectively racing on the exact same track. I guess if you wanted more course variety than mirrors offer you could just make them race once in each direction, then add their times to determine the winner.

    • You know what? If you could keep the track design interesting and varied ala Mario Kart, while making it bi-directional, I would play the hell out of it. Especially if there was an alternate method of victory that required you to destroy all opponents.

    • This is pretty much how I used to play Daytona/Scud racer at the arcades, everyone would take off at the starting line, I would turn around and get as much speed up as possible going the wrong way and try to take out whomever was coming first. It was worth it for the WTF! screams from my mates.

    • There’s a limit on replies? How do the replies work here?

Also, yeah it does, but I guess I was waking up and certain parts switched functions too soon. So paralysis worn out I guess.

      • The thread does run out after a certain number of replies.
That sucks that your first lucid dream in a while ended up with you in pain. Thanks for explaining it’s lucid because I sometimes wonder if it really is. Sometimes I think that maybe it’s not because I seem to use logic to change the dream. (does that make sense?)
It’s really weird. Sometimes, something will happen that I don’t want and it’ll just rewind it and try again but with a preferred outcome. I don’t really feel like I control it, it just kind of happens.

        • Makes sense. Logic of the mind is what the mind makes it to be. Sort of like beliefs.

Rewinding? Strange. How much detail can you remember and how much is made up to fill in the parts you don’t? Its difficult to tell, maybe you got really good memory.

I’ve changed environments and myself in dreams. Noticed that the people in my dreams are different parts of me. If all my attention becomes used by me then the people stop and alsmot go hollow? I guess the brain kinda focuses those parts to what I wanted to do with it since I’m fully aware of what’s happening. Doesn’t just roam. The more I concentrate the easier I wake up. You need to find the balance in between. If you relax too much you will lose yourself in your dream and if you focus too much you will wake up.

I’ve had it when I’m about to wake up I let my mind wonder and then start dreaming normally only to realise once again and remember the weird moment that I wasn’t aware that all it was was a dream. It’s strange and fun.

I’ve also visited and talked with characters I tried writing a story for. Been the hulk, been James bond snow boarding down a mounain. Did a kamehameha. Used rocketman cheat to save someone. Altered my nightmares so I do not have to run. Opened doors to places I never thought I would reach. Talked to monsters. Confronted a ghost, changed it to a spirit eagle. That’s all that I can remember. Was master chief, that was the first time I kicked the wall. So far that’s only happened twice.

Was captured by two eltes, so I made a plan to kick the third one that was approaching me and push off from him. Kicked the wall and woke up in pain. lol

          • The rewind ability is when I say “Wait, that’s not right” then it goes back to before it happened and I’m able to alter it. For example, someone may get killed, I’m not happy with it, it goes back and I save them.
As for people, I don’t see them with features, but rather, they’re a blank human. Instead, I look at them and go “that’s mum.” or someone else. So I know who it is, but I not from their features. Dreams are weird.
When I wake up, I remember them for a while, but the details become vague after a while. Probably because it happens so often. For example, I know I’ve had the zombie apocalypse dream multiple times, slightly different each time, and it’s always ended up a lot of fun because I’m able to find resources and fight back.

          • Listening to the audio book; The organized mind, by daniel j lewit, Luke Daniels. Learned that when you try to remember something you borrow the parts of your brained required to remember it, to recreate it. If it’s something visual, your visual cortex is somewhat borrowed to see the picture, color, detail. Same applies to other senses. To add to that you don’t remember and/or see every possible detail. Your brain fools itself by filling in those missing details. Every time you recall a memory it is slightly altered. If the action being remembered is something you do every day, such as catching the same bus, chances are you won’t remember it in too much detail on what happened on the bus ride 2 days ago. Unless something out of the ordinary happens, like a dog takes the seat next to you and strikes up a conversation. Or maybe something normal but not ordinary, like some guy tries to start up a fight. But in the dream that can feel like such a normal every day thing that a talking dog or a guy who wants to fight can feel so natural lol. That being said if you don’t try to remember it then it is not important and chances are you will lose that memory. Best have a dream diary next to your bed and write down the dreams as soon as you wake up if you want to remember them.

Sounds pretty cool though, I’m pretty tired of all the zombie games lol

          • Write it down for now. Beware of scope creep though.

As to make it; check out tools such as unity. Or perhaps draw up a prototype. Make one out of paper? Test the idea.

If the idea feels good. Break down the tasks as much as possible. Such as; load up empty screen. Load up box. Apply controls to box. Load up small surface for box to move on. Another box.test collision. Eventually you would need to apply some physics, but then that also depends on the kind game style you want to go for. Maybe you won’t need physics.

1 by 1, the tasks can be done and eventually you get there. Would take time though.

I’m too lazy and have stopped working on all of my ideas. Keep telling myself I should continue, but the more I talk about it the less I do.

          • That’s pretty cool. 3D? Or 2D? Both? I can’t really do 2D lol. I’ve done a bit of 3D at uni, it was fun. I wouldn’t really know how to make/prep 3D for games, but I’m sure I could find out.

Yeah coding can be difficult, that’s the only thing I’ve done so far. I’m that good at it, but given time I’ve figured some stuff out. Given time you can figure it out.

          • 2d and 3d. I do both.
I don’t really have time to learn coding. It sounds like bullcrap but I am pretty overloaded as it is. I’m still working on my bookmarks, trying to fix up the house and I’ve still got sewing things to do.

          • All things take time, its just a matter of organising the tasks and priorities. Good art takes a lot of time. Learned that when I did 3D animation. If you don’t have time to learn coding, you can ask a friend who may be interested.

I’ve done that before with my friends and never really worked out. No one wanted to actually do things they didn’t know how to. Nobody wanted to do any research, just do what they already knew. And everyone seemed to have wanted to make changes/influences on the core design of ideas even if they agreed to who was going to do the main design. Attempted many different ideas with the same friends and every time nothing lol.

          • That always seems the case.
I’m pretty terrible at getting things moved forwards, especially since I have a lot of other things to do (At the moment, bookmarks and house DIY)

          • One thing at a time you’ll get there.

What kind of bookmarks? Fan-art bookmarks? Book specific bookmarks or something like that?

The design all in the art or is shared on the design of the phsyical thing itself? I’m imagining something like a rectangle with art, bright colors.

          • They look pretty cool, but I’ve never watched persona or played the game. Only heard good things about them. No idea as to why I never really bothered to search up on it. Is the game a fighting game? Whats it on?

      • Persona 4 is part dating sim, part dungeon crawler. You play as Yu (you can call him whatever you want) who has to adjust to staying with his uncle as his parents are overseas. To make things worse, someone is going around committing murders using the most unlikely of weapons! This is no ordinary case and the police have no idea. Juggle daily high school life, create lasting relationships and catch the murderer!

The social links allow you to level up your persona, which is what allows you to do battle in the dungeons. Persona 4 is available on PS2, and the later released persona 4 golden is available on PSVita.

The fighting games are spin off games that feature the cast of Persona 3 FES, Persona 4 and later Persona 4 golden. There is also Persona Q, another spin off game and Persona 4 dancing all night, yet another spin off game.

        • Seems like a successful franchise. I never had a ps2. At that time I had Xbox and halo. So missed all the games on ps2. After the Xbox I got the Xbox 360 and wii. Only 3 months ago did I get a ps. Ps4. Pretty good console and some decent games on it. Now I barely have time to play anything. Still playing the Nathan Drake collection.

          • If you like JRPG’s and story based games, you’ll generally like Persona.
Uncharted, the second game is best. I’d then say the 3rd and then the 1st

          • I don’t mind jrpgs, though never really invested much time into them. Might look into persona if I come across it.

As for uncharted. So far I’m near the end of number 2, and its was more story rich and fun than 1. I’m looking forward to finishing 2 and playing 3, should be good. Got the last of us lined up after that. That should take some time considering I have witcher and other games on pc that I’m still playing from time to time. I think I’ve seen a persona game on steam? Will have a look.

Hmm just had a look. Nothing. Strange, I remember seeing it on some sort of online shop. The newest one. Might check it out later. Should probably leave it for now. One game at a time.

  • Heading home today to see the family. Probably won’t be around TAY much for the next few days so I hope you all have a very happy Christmas!

  • So the only Steam game for the Christmas sale seems to be “look at your discovery queue 3 times a day for free cards”. At least it’s accessible for all, I guess?

After going through my queue I realised that about 20% were actual games, and the rest were Early Access entries. Thanks anyway, Steam.

      • Yeah, but I’m kind of stuck. I want to see new Early Access games, but I don’t want to buy them until they’re done…and following them just means my Steam feed is clogged by tiny updates that I don’t care about.

I’d love a button that says “This game looks interesting. Let me know when it’s released”.

        • That is what I want as well. But for me I’m happy enough to ignore them until release, not really interested in see how they develop and what new features are there. Only interested in playing once it is done

  • So I really want to buy a bunch of Steam sale games..
But my backlog is already so, so long…
BUT I have been wanting to buy these games for ages!
But my SSD is nearly full anyway…
    BUT they are so cheap!
But I am already broke from xmas shopping… and I won’t have much time to play over the holidays…

      • That would delay buying a new graphics card…. which I can’t do until I have paid off my credit cards…

    • Do what i do, buy for everyone else XD
Satisfies the buying urge without clogging up my library πŸ˜›

      • If this is your sneaky way of getting me to buy you games…

It’s working! What do you want? I still haven’t gotten around to downloading the games you gave me (these 12hr working days are so much fun).

  • On a whim I just counted up how much all my remaining (did a big sell off a few years ago) TF2 items are worth on the Marketplace. It comes just over $40USD. Now to see if I can convince myself to part with them.

Also, if people do have old TF2 items I’d suggest checking your Halloween 2010 items. I have a couple of hats worth $7ish each.

  • So, what’s the deal with these Steam mystery card thingos.. I have #2 – #11 already, can’t seem to spot a #1 on the market at all. So uh..?

  • Huh. Looks like I underestimated TPG. I figured I could place my NBN order now and being Christmas they’d take a couple days to get to it and I’d see my connection next week when I actually move in (lease starts on the 28th)

Just got 3 emails in a row confirming my order, confirming my address was suitable, and that my modem had been dispatched and should arrive next business day.

    • I’m about to give them a call myself. I forgot that port availability was a thing. Now I’ve got to figure out exactly what I’m going to do. Construction has commenced on the NBN for my new building a while back, so I’m hoping they flip the switch on that and solve all my problems sometime between now and when I move in. =S

  • Star Wars. I have experienced it. Spoilers ahoy for those that haven’t seen it.

I enjoyed the movie but I enjoyed it on a slightly better level than the prequels but not as good as the originals. It was a good Star Wars movie but I’m not sure that it was a good movie overall. It did feel like playing a bit of Star Wars bingo with the sheer number of throwbacks and homages to the earlier movies. Of course the movie would never be treated as just a movie in isolation to the rest of the series but it feels a bit lackluster that it didn’t even try to stand on its own two feet. It also didn’t have the same feeling of New Hope or Phantom Menace where the movie could be taken as a standalone and the obvious “wait for the sequel” ending didn’t help. I would have much preferred that the movie ended after piecing the map together and before finding Luke.

A bit ranty I know but I’m hopeful for the rest of the trilogy.

    • I definitely agree that the movie was ending “too late” and it really should’ve ended after the ship took off with all those major characters in the shot watching as they left, as the usual end of every Star Wars movie showed a wide shot of many major characters just before hitting credits.

I had other huge problems, specifically with Finn himself as a character but I’ll leave that rant for another time. It’s weird that I’m the only one that I know of who’s bothered by that.

      • You could probably recut the final shot as a Post-Credits scene and have the actual ending be the wide shot. It “felt” like a PCS any way, just without having to sit through the credits.

      • I know it’s weird to say about a Star Wars film but a lot of the new characters felt almost too one-dimensional or they had one specific character trait that was amplified above all else. Finn was a massive coward, Rey was really good at the Force, Poe was pilot extraordinaire, BB-8 was an overly cute droid, Ren was super angry, etc. I hope we see more variety in the sequels because the characters were almost caricatures in some scenes.

        • Yeah I see what you’re saying but to be fair almost all the characters listed are still quite young (looking at them and interactions it appears to be the assumption?) Finn came across as massively traumatized; especially after he realized what kind of power Kylo weilded and how escaping could be futile. Rey definitely needs more backstory in order to justify her character motivations; as a kid stranded on a desert planet scavenging for junk she should have much more of a self-serve; everyone out for themselves kind of personality. They better have some justification for her character being so well-rounded. Ren struck me as young as well; hence the overboard-emo-teen-angst vibe off him. Once again hoping for more character development to round out those jagged personalities. All in all felt like they had some really solid foundation characters with great potential to grow into some memorable icons in the upcoming movies; upto the writers and actors to make sure that happens now I guess! I would have to say out of all the new characters Poe seemed to be the most well developed but to be fair he’s also older.

    • I’m jumping on the hate train!

My pet peeve was I felt the over-arching themes were too similar to ANH? While I apprecaited the similarities for the most part I felt it went over-board with the whole giant planet destroying machine that can be destroyed with a single weakpoint. That final arc just felt like the story lacked originality; also I kept querying what the hell the rebels have been upto since RoTJ that the majority of their fleet = 10-15 X-Wings. And why is it the Rebels are still running shit out of a single base???

To be fair these are all minor peeves; still loved the movie to death and definitely going to watch again.

      • Pretty much everyone I saw the movie with agreed that the Starkiller cannon was rather stupid. Someone also argued that if the solar energy was fired through hyperspace (which was the only way it could hit a distant target in a short period of time), there is no way that it should have been seen while it blazed across the galaxy. Also the general lack of technological differences was rather silly but it was rather emblematic of the whole film and trying to recreate ANH. TFA was very close to being a stale rehash of ANH but there was just enough new stuff that it wasn’t entirely the same movie.

On the lack of equipment for the good guys, that can sorta be explained by the terminology. Rebels are generally considered more organised and have better equipment and supplies whereas Resistance implies that they’re underground and making do with what they have. I imagine the remnants of the Empire and the Rebel Alliance merged together to form the New Republic while the hardcore elements (New Order and Resistance) battled it out on the fringes.

I was disappointed by the lack of other spaceships though. No Y-Wings, no A-Wings, no TIE Interceptors. It was very lackluster in the space category as all the dogfights bar the escape happened in a planet’s atmosphere. There was not enough space stuff in this Star Wars for me.

    • But how would they give Mark Hamill top billing if he didn’t spend a few seconds silently staring?
      cc @beeawwb

    • You know, when …
Han died, it got me in the feels, even though I pretty much knew it was coming (Ford looked way too happy when promoting the film), but I realised two days later that in my mind Harrison Ford had died, and I started telling my wife how it is a shame that Harrison Ford had…. then realised. Man, I guess the film really ‘felt real’ to me πŸ™‚

  • Greetings All,

Just wanted to say I hope you all have a great Xmas and have an excellent time at whatever you get up to! πŸ™‚

  • Anyone else working over xmas? I need to know who not to add to my ‘silently hate for the 4 working days over the holiday period’ list.

    • Me, I’ve only got the public holidays off. Though I did get the 29th off as “personal leave” so I can move in to my new apartment. But that’s not really holiday.

      • Ditto. I’ve got 2 international trips next year, much rather take the time off then than fight the crowds and extravagant price gouging over xmas.

Edit: Plus, you’ll never be on my hate list, Techie. Necrons, represent!

        • \o/
I am a machine, I prefer leading other machines, even if they are slaves, can’t trust meatbags! πŸ˜›
I’m planning on a potential overseas trip for next christmas or next August, depends on what happens.

          • Spoilerising it cuz it’s personal:
Up to Greece to spend Christmas with a long distance girlfriend that the relationship recently rekindled after a really rough patch that happened last year that almost ended it. So this way, I spend christmas with her and I also get to meet her family finally. If it’s next August it’ll be her coming here to spend two weeks here with me, either way we’ll be seeing each other again

          • For a heartless machine, you are too cute.

I did long distance with my girlfriend a few years back – she was in Jakarta for what was meant to be a couple of months, and it ended up being over a year. It was the worst – commiserations, brother. But yay for getting to see her!

    • I was supposed to be working this week, but uhhh, not being allowed into my work has put a bit of a dampener on that.

    • I have the public holidays off but otherwise will be working through. I like to take my leave in the less busy expensive periods too πŸ™‚

    • I volunteer as the TAY Christmas break hate sink!

I have afternoon of the 24th off, coming back on Monday the 4th. None of this time is counted as annual leave and I get paid my full wage.

    • Self-employed and moving into a new apartment. I’m going to be pretty busy from now until about the 10th, but for the most part I choose my own hours and a lot of urgent stuff can be put off and blamed on couriers. I also don’t have to deal with people directly at work, which is a bonus all year round that offsets the annoying periods like this.

      • Also I just realised I’m running out of clean clothes and I won’t be getting a washing machine sorted anytime soon. Welcome to sink town…

        • I source machinery components and then sell them globally. It’s not very interesting but I get things cheap enough that I can make good money while still offering great prices, it doesn’t take much effort, the hours are flexible and I don’t have to deal with people face to face. I really lucked out in that it’s something that’s tailored to blending my particular skill sets that offers me the freedoms I need to be able to work efficiently.

          • I try not to bring it up because I get excited and it comes off as bragging, but it really is awesome. I wish I had of figured this part of my life out when I was 20.

          • If you enjoy your work, then you should be happy. I asked, so it’s not really bragging. I don’t understand it much, but if you like it, then I’m happy for you.

          • Am I the only one that imagined you saying this into a phone…

‘What I do have… is a very particular set of skills. Skills that offer me the freedoms I need to be able to work efficiently. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you’

    • I love them all, except the yellow one, something doesn’t feel right about it. Maybe too much fine detail?

I also don’t know who they are, but think they look great.

        • I think it is more a lack of detail in the head/hair maybe. It is just kind of a big round black blob. Although that might be what you mean, it is straight on so you don’t get any nose/chin definition to break up the face.
That said I haven’t played persona so could capture that character perfectly

        • Just took another look, that is exactly it.
I’d kill for some Bob’s Burgers or Archer ones like that, do you take commissions?

          • Never! =P

I’ll add it to the list. I’m currently working through the games, I’m moving to animation eventually. (I’ll get there). I had some issues with Archer when I initially tried it, but I think that’s because I got really hung up on the face. I think I’ll either silhouette them, or minimalize.

    • go steal another pizza and listen to its “a wonderful world” while walking through a park with pizza thief.

      • Doesn’t entirely look like park-walking weather outside… would be nice if she could break free from her family though πŸ˜›

        Also WOO EARLY MARK!

  • Holy shit I think I just nearly got hit by a car, they went straight through the red light at the crossing. Stupid dickhead.

      • Green lights basically just mean you’ll have the moral (and legal) high ground if you get hit. Grew up around roads where indicators were “optional extras,” so learned to never trust that a driver will do what they look like they’re about to do.

      • The pedestrian signal had gone off a good three seconds or so before I got to the crossing. I’d jogged over to catch the light while it was still green, and just stepped out of the first lane into the second when this idiot ploughed through the lane behind me. Totally came out of nowhere, the light had been red for her for ages. There was a big truck in the second lane too, so if anyone coming from the other side had been going any faster they would’ve been collected before she had a chance to see them.

Wish I’d chased after her and yelled at her, since she just got stopped behind traffic at the next set of lights all of 30m down the road.

  • You know who’s awesome? You guys! You guys are awesome
(Haven’t had one of those for a while)
Honestly just want to say thank you to each and everyone of you who’s part of this amazing community… I know i’ve been a bit glum(Whiney) this past year but you guys have helped me deal with it… Also you guys just rock, and it’s awesome knowing there’s one place where i am always welcome… so yeah… Taypreciation time!

    • You know what i find funny, pretty much all the friends i have made since leaving school have been from this place. I can’t even fathom that when i was 19-20 i decided on a whim to write hey on here. Back then it was like Just @chuloopa , @fatshady and @ strange talking to themselves and then we grew so big and started meeting each other and being parts of other people lives, memories were made, relationship forged, secrets exposed and all through that i have grown up so much. I cant even imagine how different i would be if it weren’t for the encouragement and acceptance i have found within our little community.

      SO thanks to everyone,
I have so many good friends who although i dont get to see all the time i know i will be friends with for many years to come. Looking at you @ blaghman

      • Man, i lurked for so long before i had the courage to speak up… And when one of you guys started talking to me i was almost star struck every time because you all seemed so cool and i wasn’t worthy of you guys talking to me XD
Also i should be social with you guys more (online/IRL) because it always brings out the best in me!

      • My first online community was a chat thing. Made a few friends. Still in contact with a couple of them. Then I was involved in a few mailing lists, starting in the late 90’s. The friends we’re spending Xmas with I know from one of them (populated mainly by petrolheads as it was a spin-off of the Subara Impreza club…), and I met my first wife and a lot of other people that I’m still in touch with on another list (nominally the Iain M Banks discussion list).

So TAY feels a lot like those other communities, and the people I’ve met thus far both at PAX and in PSN chat (or text chat in Elite, Pixel…) are the kinds of people I like to hang with.

        Online communities are communities.

        • Yeeeaaahh I really need to get over that pathological shyness of voice chat and just jump in… I’m just absolutely terrible at small talk XD

    • It hasn’t been an easy year for a number of us, me included, I’ve had my ups and downs, but I’m always glad us TAYbies can lean on one another when one of us really needs it.

      • So much this. We’ve all had our share of smiles and frowns, and we ride through them together. TAY is family.

      • I know you’ve been struggling a lot, and i’ve often felt you and I need to grab a drink together one day!… then I remember that I don’t go out that often and the city scares me, but aside from that; We should grab a drink together!

        • Yeah we could grab a drink, play some warhammer 40k conquest at Good Games with some non-alcoholic beverages (Obviously I’m trying so darn hard to get people to play with on this game haha), only reason we haven’t been doing that is really cuz we’re on opposite ends of the city.

I don’t see how the city can be scary, I only got fully screamed at randomly by a most-likely-drugged-up woman last night, just suddenly “FUCK OFF!” as I was walking past an intesection, minding my own business. The CBD’s a lovely place! Now, please excuse me while I go check and ensure my stun baton is fully charged… πŸ˜›

          • Bahahaha oh god i would have crapped myself! πŸ˜›
I’m realising more and more that i’m definitely a country boy!
The city is just too damn crowded, waaaaay too many people… And don’t even talk to me about driving through it πŸ˜›
I’ll do it but i HATE it every time…

Also i’m keen to give Conquest a go, i nearly grabbed it at some point, the only thing stopping me was the price and that i’d have no one to play it with πŸ˜›

          • Yes I agree, the swarm of humans is too much, you creatures multiply too much. I’d almost want to be a country boy, if i wasn’t so dependant on internet now, playing LoL and all that. I never drive through the city, the closest I ever get is Westgate Freeway and that’s while I’m driving to Scree’s place.

As for Conquest, if I get enough people playing it I can get everything needed to make it tourney capable and you can design your own deck through my cards (I’ve already grabbed the tyranid expansion), while we all stick to a certain faction deck, and you know which one I’m waiting on. πŸ˜›

      • THIS GUY!
You know, i never really get the chance to actually talk to you when we meet up… This should probably be fixed in the future!

        • Haha! I’m pretty bad about that. Takes a few times meeting people before I properly interact with them. Perhaps next time will be THE time! But you know you’re my boi anyway

        • Well I was mostly channelling that Life Of Brian guy πŸ˜›

Though also I have been walking around with my head held rather high since that Christmas party. I am pretty awesome.

          • Oh… Erhm… I GET REFERENCES! πŸ˜›
            But yes, yes you are!
Also GLHF with Pizza thief… Are you seeing her over christmas at all?

          • Not sure, I think she’s pretty well tied up hanging out with the family while they’re down here. Been sending a couple of messages here and there at least. It’d be nice if she could get a night off or something at some point though.

    • Your alright Pixel frond! Merry Christmas to you and yours and everyone here! Hugs for all and too all let’s get inebriated

      • And to you my friend!
Inebriation will have to wait until tomorrow however as i need to drive tonight πŸ˜›

  • Woo, got my Star Wars ticket. Now just gotta wait til Sunday.

Got Mum’s present sorted too, saw Deadwood box set in JB and remembered a friend raving about it. That’ll do.

Still no idea for Dad though. Impossible task, he doesn’t do anything except buy random bike parts off eBay. Never actually seen any of them get used.

  • Oh right, while i remember: @blaghman and @f4ction sorry for hurting you guys’ feelings last night, blasting through TS like that πŸ˜›
    I was told people were LoL’ing so i didn’t want to disturb…
    Didn’t get a chance to explain… And i felt i needed to… for some reason…
    Please don’t hate me πŸ˜›

  • Taypreciation

You are all nice people. I have loved playing board games, going to dapper dinners, drinking too much gin and playing dressups.

Stay awesome taybies. More in 2016 please.

  • \o/ for cheap alcoholic products because the labels change lol. Just scored 10 cans of Castaway Pear cider for $9 from work, cause Pinnacle have changed the labels so they want to move old stock heh.
