The Makers Of XCOM’s Long War Mod Are Making Their Own Game

Rather than occupy themselves with finding ways to make XCOM 2 even harder than even Firaxis imagined, the creators behind the brilliant Long War XCOM free mod are breaking out on their own.

The studio name and website is pretty honest about their beginnings: Long War Studios. It follows the release of the launch version of the Long War mod, which has a list of programmers, artists, contributors, voice actors and designers that would make many indie developers proud.

But the team won’t be making another Long War mod again — because they’re breaking out to make a new game, a game called Terra Invicta.

“Terra Invicta is a grand strategy game in which the player leads the defense of Earth during an alien invasion,” the site says. “The player must assemble a council of scientists, politicians, military leaders and operatives who can unite Earth’s squabbling nations with the ultimate goal of taking the fight to the aliens in the high ground of outer space.”

It’s listed as being in “pre-Kickstarter development”, meaning that it’s likely we’ll see a campaign rolled out some time within the next twelve months (but my suspicion would be within the next 6). Long War Studios only has two core members — John Lumpkin and Rachel Norman — from the Long War mod, while James Karlson is listed as a contributor. The site also reveals that Long War Studios has been operating since August.

The mention of grand strategy makes me think a little bit about Stellaris, Paradox’s take on space that will blend the 4X genre with their flavour of grand strategy. I’m hoping that the Colorado-based studio produces something a touch more accessible than the Europa Universalis or the Crusader Kings games though.
