Detective Pikachu sure is different from what we’re used to. Not only does the character solve mysteries, but he also talks. There are more surprises to be had.
Via the official site for upcoming 3DS game Great Detective Pikachu: The Birth of a New Duo, here are tidbits about the character that stand out:
1. Detective Pikachu has a weakness for beautiful women and even tries picking them up (note: the Japanese text on the official site says “to ask someone out for tea”, meaning “to ask someone out on a date”, the same as we say asking them out for coffee in English).
2. He is described as “somewhat self-important”.
3. He really likes coffee. We see him drinking it in the trailer, but this isn’t only a minor detail. The character not only loves coffee, but knows a great deal about it, has a favourite cafe and comments on what he likes about certain blends.
4. He walks on two legs. Unlike Ash’s Pikachu, even when Detective Pikachu is running fast, he runs on two legs. At full speed, however, he is not fast.
5. Detective Pikachu is no good at generating electricity. He also hates taking orders.
Not the kind of Pikachu we’ve seen before. But let’s be honest. The most surprising thing about this new Pikachu isn’t the coffee, the talking, or the picking up ladies. It’s this:

Maybe im just being cynical but this seems like they made a detective game featuring some lil critter that wasnt a pokemon and they realized it wasnt going to sell so they jusr re-skinned the character as pikachu. Which is why he cant use electricity, chats up women, runs on 2 legs n drinks coffee (!?!). And his voice. He sounds like a speaker at a japanese business seminar! Tho it would be great to have Danny DeVitachu. All these traits just seem SO unlike pokemon that im concerned if this game will be worth it. Theres a lot of love for pokemon in our family n this Just has a “lipstick on a pig” feel about it that has certain family members worried if its a con.
What makes me skeptical about this being a re-skin of another game is how protective The Pokémon Company is of their own brand. It’s like how they won’t let Nintendo make Pokémon-inspired skins for Yoshi in Yoshi’s Wooly World or even let the Pokémon Amiibo outfits speak in Super Mario Maker.
I believe The Pokémon Company itself made this game as well, and I (personally) can’t remember them being responsible for any games outside of the Pokémon franchise and would think it strange that they were working on some detective with some random non-Pokémon protagonist.
I will say, I’m skeptical about this game being anything other than a novelty though.
Is he a human-turned-pikachu, and the greatest mystery of all is how this came to be?
Or is he like anime meowth, learning how to walk and talk like a human?
The latter could explain why he’s not good at producing electricity
I get the feeling he’s a human detective who somehow got turned into a Pikachu.
I just wonder how Nintendo NA is reacting to demands for Danny De Vito to voice him.
I more wonder what the core mechanics of the game are going to be & how this detectachu solves crimes & mysteries.
But he’s got a new hat!
