Briefly: Oculus announced today that Kickstarter backers of the original Oculus Rift who pledged for a Rift development kit will receive the final hardware — for free! It’s a nice gesture towards virtual reality’s biggest evangelists the day before pre-orders officially begin for the Oculus Rift. The biggest problem? We still don’t know how much it will cost.

The fact we still have no idea how much this thing will cost makes me think we wont like it when we find out. If companies are confident they generally have no problem giving out that sort of info. Well at least there are multiple VR units coming out which might help with a future price war.
Alternatively, it could be cheaper than everyone is expecting which will drive people into a buying frenzy.
I think they’re just creating a little hype, it will be about $400.
This is pretty awesome gesture to their first backers.
Predictions,
My guess is the $599 mark
I had assumed that the ‘audiophile’ grade headphones were included but having them removed ‘should’ help reduce the costs (logically).
They should remove the XBone controller too as thats stupid expensive on its own. (maybe at a later date they will just have the headset by itself)
I still believe that rift had best play it carefully since the Vive has made some very notable achievements of recent which will give them a run for their money.
Fingers crossed, but i’m defiantly going to be an early adopter of this since checking out the DK2 and Im super pumped to get on the developer bandwagon
I don’t think the headphones are removable from the purchase. They’re removable from the headset itself if you want to use your own, but they’ll still be included with every set. And the Xbone controller is negligibly cheap for them to include, they’re not going to be paying $80 each like you would if you went down to Big W or whatever.
