With a cancelled Kickstarter under its belt, First Wonder, Rogue Rocket Games’ spiritual successor to Giants: Citizen Kabuto, was already on unstable ground. Sadly, things appear to have finally caved, with the developer informing backers that the game itself has been canned.
In a post on Reddit, user “kleep” provided a text dump of the email explaining the situation to supporters. According to Rogue Rocket, the game wasn’t able to “attract new [fans]” and was likely “aimed too strongly at Giants fans”.
The end result is that the developer couldn’t get enough funding to take the next step and rather than overreach, has chosen to issues refunds and close up shop:
For now Rogue Rocket is going dormant. [Richard Sun] and I [Nick Bruty] need to focus on other projects and jobs. I’m keeping my claws sharp contracting as an Art Director on an external title while I plot my next move and Rich has taken another Job in the games industry.
There is a small upside however, wrapped inside a hard learning experience:
I remain undeterred but it’s clearly been too many years since Giants and MDK and If I want to build games like First Wonder then I have to start off much smaller, simpler and grow a new audience. I have such a game in mind.
While First Wonder‘s Greenlight page is still up, the official website is essentially defunct. A sad end to the project, but there’s not much you can do about reality.

That article title’s pretty inscrutable as it stands.
Hah, yeah. I didn’t get it until I read the first sentence. At first I thought the game was called “Giants: Citizen Kabuto Successor First Wonder” and was thinking it seemed like a mouthful.
It’s a real shame about the Giants successor…. Citizen Kabuto is one of the best PC games I have ever played. Obviously it’s a bit lacking today, but it’s still brilliant!
