Hi all! Hope your weekends were great, and that the flooding and lightning damage was minimal.
I haven’t picked up a game since Metal Gear Solid V, and I’ve rediscovered what it’s like to be a productive writer. It feels really good. Think a (long-overdue) break from gaming is mandated for the moment.
If you have to have a break, now isn’t a bad time. There’s some absolutely brilliant stuff coming up, but for the next few months I don’t think you’ll miss too much.
I’ve got a backlog of games, but I’m not really inspired to play them right now. I think the next game I play will be Dark Souls III.
XCOM 2, The Division, Dark Souls 3, Fire Emblem beg to differ 😛
My printer was boxed up waiting to be moved to Cathryn’s dad’s new place and it was left outside on the balcony in a box and the balcony flooded. I now have no printer
Aw no 🙁
Morning TAY! I did a thing! Bit rough, and really could use a few tweaks, but given my situation, it’s kind of the best I can do atm. Really just wanted to do something a little different to say thanks to all you lovely people who’ve been helping me out through these troubled times.
Some day I might get around to re-doing it with a bit more attitude, but hope you dig it in its current state anyway!

Oh Jesus, I hadn’t read anything about this! I’m really sorry to hear about your situation, here’s hoping that the waiting time isn’t that long. I’ve just made a quick donation, I’m sure there have been some very generous TAYbies who would help out if they hadn’t heard either!
wow! cheers man! much appreciated! Wait time for surgery is estimated to be around March at this stage. Fingers crossed it’s not too much longer than that. Well and truly tired of all these issues!
Anyone in Melbourne’s bayside area keen on a midweek session of Spyfall?
Hey Kotakians, I smashed The Division over the weekend, and am completely convinced it’ll be a Day One purchase for me – but now I’m torn which platform to get it on. Does anyone know if either Xbox or PS4 (yes, I’m a console peasent) is having any exclusivity (other than this week’s beta) with regards to missions and things, or is it pretty much open slather for both at launch?
As far as I saw when trying to pre-order so I could get the beta (which I didn’t 🙁 ) there weren’t any console exclusives that I could see.
PS4 and Ubi have previously had some exclusivity but if it’s not on offer now I don’t imagine it will be down the track.
I wouldn’t worry about exclusives. Go for the option that has more friends you can play with. Dark Zones really shine when you’re in a group.
Morning, TAY.
Had Thai for dinner last night, because the centre of Geelong was blocked off due to the bike race yesterday.
Been pushing my way through Euro Truck Simulator 2 whilst waiting for American Truck Simulator to drop… so…
If you were or are a trucker, what would/do you call yourself on the CB?
Ten Four
Sticky Wicket.
Tango Indigo Golf Sierra
or
Tig-Dog
Cold Train..taking this one off the tracks good buddy
I’m trying something new this year. I’m going to try and only buy 1 game a month (not including DLC) and work through my massive backlog of games.
I just had a quick look through what’s coming out over the next few months and this is what I’ve got:
Jan – The Witness
Feb – XCOM 2
Mar – The Division*/Twilight Princess HD
Apr – Uncharted 4
*Depends friends get it or not
Lets see how long this lasts…
…I feel like Twilight Princess might have to wait.
I’m prioritising The Division over Twilight Princess (seeing as I already own it on both GC and Wii). I really need to find out what platform people will be playing on. Having seen the interface, I’m kinda of leaning towards PS4 though. But then I didn’t get to play the beta…
Raygun Brown played the beta on both Xbox and PS4 and reported that, while it’s probably negligible, the game looks slightly better on PS4.
I’m mostly trying to decide between PC and PS4.
I’m on PC, and was playing with Rize and CJ for a bit there on Saturday.
I can say that PC didn’t feel like a port at all. The menus could be better for mouse use, though.
Probably goes without saying that I’ll be buying it on PC 😛
I’m leaning towards that too because I don’t want to also have to renew my PS Plus. 😛
I’m going with PC for my usual reasons (generally summed up as “I’m a PC gamer”) but it’s also so I don’t have to kick my wife off the TV if she’s using it. That’s still the biggest inconvenience for my PS4, and one of the reasons I still love the Wii U.
I’m on Pee Ess For.
Twilight Princess has been waiting for… *checks watch* 9 years as of last week for me now.
I should really get back to it 😛
So for us plebs who didn’t get a Division beta key, is it good?
Why is it good?
Are we getting it?
Can we shoot Pyrean in the back and steal his stuff? (This is the important one)
Gameplay is pretty solid. Gears of Watch_Dogs seems to be the catchcry. It’s an RPG so you start off which guns that spray tickle dust all over the place, but you quickly find better gear. There’s only one story mission, one side mission and a few random encounters (which mostly include clearing an area and releasing a hostage from a broom closet or finding some macguffin) which are fun. It seems interesting so far. As you level up and upgrade your forward operations base you unlock new perks/skills which you can upgrade on the fly, so you’re not locked into a set loadout. The game looks great and there’s plenty of exploring to do, which is probably my favourite part of the beta. Just wandering looking for things, the most interesting to me was discovering an “Echo” where you hold a point and your computer collects data from various sources compiled from the cloud, and reconstructs a still holographic image of a significant event, with audio recordings presumably from phones or radio transmissions.
It was hard to get a feel from the “purpose” of the game, since you’re thrown into this post-catastrophe scenario and all we’ve done so far is locate and begin upgrading the base. I’m hoping there is a sort of underlying mystery to resolve. I don’t know if content will be released id “seasons” which will drag out the game. Rather than restoring things, for instance, will be be constantly treading water in a static environment? These are questions I want answered before I make a decision.
The PVP is unobtrusive. The game constantly reminds you that the best gear is in the dark zone which is a free-for-all with rogue agents clearly marked as such, but I guess you don’t really have to go out there if you don’t want to.
How big is the difference in the PvP area between someone who’s been farming the dark zone for the best gear and someone who’s just about to venture in there?
In my experience you can get gear that’s as just good outside of the Dark Zone, but you can get gear faster in there and therefore have a higher chance to find an upgrade.
There was a store in the DZ that sold a couple of yellow guns that cost a tonne of PvP-specific money but weapon rarity seems to be more about skills and bonuses on weapons rather than outright damage.
Put it this way: I was headshotting people with 2-3 hits using a sniper rifle I found off a random garbage enemy in solo PvE.
I only went out there once and that was quite early on so it’s hard to say. You can expect players already out there are going to be a higher level and have better gear, and of course know the layout better. At first you get thrown in and don’t really know what to expect or understand what you’re doing. The NPC enemies will be tougher too, but that’s why the loot is better. I didn’t venture far – I killed a couple of NPCs, scored and OK gun and a cool jacket, joined in on an extraction (which was pretty cool – holding the zone while a chopper comes in and attaching my gear to a rope which is then whisked away) then had to plod back to the gate to get back into the regular area.
I guess the gear is better and drops at higher levels but the guns don’t completely make the game either. Again, if I pick up the game I don’t imagine I’ll venture in there much at all because I’m sure that regular gear will be fine for the story.
Apart from the actual starting area before you enter the game, and the dark zone, the only other players are those in your party. Presumably if you’re a level 5 and go into the DZ, you’ll probably get matchmade with other level 5s – but if there was any such matchmaking it was invisible to me. There is also matchmaking for the story. The mission I did was recommended for level 4, which is what you start at in the beta. I triggered matchmaking and joined a session in progress, wither two other level 4s and a level 5. I don’t know for sure but I think it dumped me very near to the mission start but probably not *at* the mission start so I recommend to (and will probably opt to) play though the story solo at first first run-through.
Weirdly after we finished the mission that group stayed with me in the game and continued to move as a group doing the open-world encounters. I guess I inadvertently joined a party and couldn’t figure out how to leave it without logging out, but since I was about to quit for the night anyway I didn’t really explore this further.
@rize as well; I guess I’m curious as to how the PvE component of the game works and if it’s intended as a single player game with a lot of solid content with a multiplayer optional component tacked on or if it’s trying to be more like an MMO with missions = group dungeons etc.
You wander the city solo unless you have a party. The single story mission available was rated at level 4. When I approached the mission I was prompted with a mission summary and I was under the impression I was supposed to matchmake so I did, but I guess I could have commenced it solo. With four of us we steamrolled the enemies. I think it would have been tough to solo but could’ve been done. For all I know the game added more enemy resistance to factor in that there were four of us, similar to Halo, but as I have no basis for comparison I can’t say for sure.
The area the mission took place in was a building interior that, as far as I can tell is not ordinarily accessible from the overworld, but once the mission was over I simply rappelled through a defunct elevator shaft and walked back outside onto the street so the “dungeon” certainly exists as part of the general game world rather than existing only as a separate space.
The other multiplayer is the PVP because once you go through the gate in the wall dividing the city from the Dead Zone, you can be attacked by other players. Again, I assume you are matchmade as you walk through the gate so you will meet players of your level but this is completely invisible and presumably happens automatically, assuming it happens at all. I came across about half a dozen other players, all between levels 5-7. Once someone kills another player agent, they are marked as rogue and presumably open season. I assume this is on a cooldown, or perhaps persists until a non-rogue agent kills you.
I didn’t die in the beta so I have no idea what happens if you die, presumably you wake up in the medical wing of your FOB with a money/XP penalty.
Dying in the Dark Zone you end up respawning at the nearest safe point (and you lose a bit of stuff, increasing if you’re more rogue), in the general world it either checkpoints you, or… I’m not sure actually, I think I only died during that mission thing.
The way being rogue works is it’s set to a timer, so if you graze someone you’ll spend 20 seconds rogue (resetting any time you shoot another player, probably doing the same when you get shot), then it ups to like 90 seconds, and further beyond that (Rize and I hit like 5 minutes and then we were =gunned down by like 6 dudes).
The beta was limited to a single group-based instance, but you could absolutely do it solo. I’m guessing future ones will be similar in that they’re soloable if you’re a few levels above the recommended.
Even without the group instance stuff there was still tonnes to do in solo, but I think you’ll get the most out of the game switching it up between solo, co op, and PvP areas (which doesn’t require attacking players).
Pretty good. Had some good fun in the beta and am keen to see what they do with the story (which was, as is the norm, kept out of the beta).
Solid gameplay, interesting and pretty environments, PvE is great and PvP was waaaay more fun than I was expecting.
Yes.
Absolutely. You could even wait until he thinks he’s secured his loot and then kill him, steal it, and secure it via his extraction request.
I spent half my time in the Dark Zone imagining how I’d kill Pyrean and steal all his stuff.
Bish, always asking the important questions
So Friday night my wife comes to the city (which was an ordeal in itself due to the storm power outage) and we get some body mods done. I finally get my Mass Effect Paragon forearm tattoo I’ve been meaning to do (my wife got her renegade wrist done two years ago) and my wife got her earlobes punched and 6mm plugs put in. She tried stretching the lobes last year but it went really badly and she ultimately took them out and let them heal. Too much scarring from previous healed piercings I think. So her piercing was much scarier, but she took it like a champ. When my tattoo is done, the guy slaps on what looks like a piece of clear contact paper and says “leave that on at least 24 hours, when it starts to peel take it off, put on some first aid cream then put on a new dressing. Once that dressing peels off, you should basically be healed”, My jaw dropped. I’m used to two weeks of putting on cream a dozen times a day. Hell my first tattoo back in 2004 Tony Cohen sticky-taped a paper towel to my leg and sent me on my way. Apparently “SaniDerm” is a dressing for burns and is a total miracle. Instead of letting scabs form it wicks away all the excess ink and plasma that rises to the surface, and it’s basically a miracle. I went through the first dressing a little faster than expected and didn’t put on the placement properly, but still, I think it’s basically healed and I don’t expect it to scab much at all.
Back to the power outage: my wife planned to drive into the city Friday night (because she’s insane) with an expected ETA of 50 minutes. 75 minutes later she was barely 2km from home because the traffic lights were out and they closed the Hume Highway. She ultimately diverted and parked at a train station, getting to the city half an hour late for her appointment (which was no issue). The power had been out since about 1:30pm and we got back to our place around 8:30… to find the place still in complete darkness. I went inside to feed the cats and rescue our chinese food leftovers and we went to her aunt’s to use her stove and hang out somewhere with air con. I spent about a hour trying to find updates on power outages and discovered our retailer has an app for that. At first the app insisted our area had no unplanned outages, which I considered unlikely Then it reported 137 unplanned outages. Half an hour later, our street seemed to be in the clear which we treated with some suspicion given that app’s early inconsistencies, but headed home and thankfully were able to relax. I would have preferred to spend the evening playing Witcher 2 or The Division, but we got there in the end.
Haha, oh man. Trying to drive then? Apparently a huge tree came down right across the highway just near my place, definitely wasn’t going to be getting through that way 😛 That night was crazy.
Did you wind up losing power? I know you’re near bass hill, right?
Somehow no! We’re in a weirdly good spot it seems. All the surrounding suburbs had power cuts or huge trees topple over or something. Nothing for us though. Just some extremely sideways hail, like it was hitting the window beside where I sit at home but to get that far under the awning over the verandah it’d have to be going shallower than maybe 30º to the ground. Absolutely mad.
Ah, February.
The only two good things about you are the fact that you’re only 28-29 days long, and you’re the last month of Summer.
Bring on March, I say.
Thanks for reminding me it’s a new month. I’d lost track of the days.
No! Summer can’t leave yet! It’s been all dark and cold and rain and this isn’t fair 🙁
Been playing heaps of Dragon’s Dogma over the weekend. I was originally playing a strider and then a ranger since I tend to favour agile fast attack combat in action games but then I ended up trying out a warrior just to see what it was like and I’ve stuck with it ever since. I think this is the first action game I’ve played where I’ve actually loved the 2 handed weapon option. Most of the time I don’t really find the slower style that accompanies 2 handers fun, but Dragon’s Dogma has the perfect balance of speed and power that I just love it. Altogether the combat in this game is just great though. I really wish more fantasy RPGs would have over the top action combat instead of the slow sort of realistic combat they tend to favour.
The great thing about Dragon’s Dogma is that it rewards you for trying out all the different play styles. Warrior, strider, whatever, their upper tiers all unlock passives that you can slot, for things like more stamina or carry capacity or stuff.
No wind, sun is hot…
I might have to get the baked beans.
I spent half my weekend pants shopping, half bedridden with horrible migraine, and half playing Halo with Cakesmith. No I don’t know how math works.
I also packed up all but one of my Assassin’s Creed figures because they were looking a little ridiculous. Had to think about which one to keep out, went with the Brotherhood outfit Ezio cos he’s my bae.
So, a Monday morning question; if you could display only one piece of gaming paraphernalia, what would it be?
I display only one piece at home and that’s my Darksiders 2 Death Mask =D
As in stuff to do with gaming that doesn’t actually involve the games themselves or the devices used to play them?
That’s… actually a really hard question. Partly because I mostly go for the actual gaming stuff in terms of purchases, and that’s where the majority of my big showpieces are. I guess I’d probably lean towards picking one of the more unique/uncommon things. So just quickly looking at a picture of my shelves from a while back probably either my set of little Viewtiful Joe figurines, or maybe the Star Fox Zero E3 pin and patch I grabbed last year. Oh actually, maybe the de Blob vinyl soundtrack. That’s cool.
There was a Hylian Shield up at Gametraders in Highpoint, so that’d probably be it for me.
I think my wife would object but I think the nicest piece of gaming tat I have is my 12″ FFX Rikku statue. It’s tall, nicely detailed, and she’s pretty. I should dust her off more often.
I think if I had to compromise with the wife it would be the Halo Reach collector’s edition Noble Team statue. Which I also should dust more often.
I think if my wife chose by herself she’d go with the Bioshock collector’s edition Big Daddy. She loves Bioshock nearly as much as she loves Mass Effect. Which reminds me, I should really buy one of those Normandy models some day.
For the record, currently on display from memory:
12″ FFX Rikku
Assassin’s Creed Altair perched on bell tower
Assassin’s Creed 2 Ezio Auditore (it’s a white figurine but I don’t think it’s the one from the “white edition” of Brotherhood)
Watch_Dogs DedSec edition Aiden Pearce
Bioshock collector’s edition Big Daddy
Halo: Reach collector’s edition Noble Team
Destiny Ghost edition Ghost
Fallout 3 Collector’s Edition Vault-boy bobblehead
Fallout 4 Collector’s Edition Vault-boy bobblehead
The rest of these are the Pop! Vinyl figures:
Game of Thrones
Danerys (Mother of Dragons version, might have been bundled with Game of thrones season 2?)
Viserion (bundled with Game of Thrones season 3 Blu-ray)
Joffrey Baratheon (bundled with Game of Thrones season 4 Blu-ray)
John Snow
Arya Stark
True Blood
Eric Northman
Pamela de Beaufort
Lafayette Reynolds
Fallout
Lone Wanderer (male)
Lone Wanderer (female)
Brotherhood of Steel Paladin
Feral Ghoul
Deathclaw
Other
8″ Bioshock Big Daddy
Scarlet Witch bobblehead
Borderlands Mad Moxxi
Batman
I’ll make a list of mine when I get home. Too many things for the top of my head haha.
Ack! Migraines are the blurst! Glad to hear you’re over it at least!
Borderlands Loot Crate.
I don’t have too much. I’ve got an AC, a Batman, and my pip boy, but beyond that I’ve never gone overboard with the statues etc. I do have my maps, but they’re in the other room.
That canvas printed Witcher 3 map from my TAY Secret Santa was sweet though
If we’re talking about stuff we actually own then it would have to be my Noble Team statue from Halo Reach.
Oh actually – I had a large poster for Metroid Prime Hunters that I got from EB (along with one of those large cardboard cube things) when they were taking those down. It used to have pride of place on my wall til all the posters got taken down during the redecoration. But one of them still remains – my House of the Dead: Overkill poster, like this one. That one’s special to me too 😛
My Molag Baal statue from teh ES:O collector’s edition – truly was the best part of that game. 😛
10th Anniversary Birthday Pikachu plush from the Pokemon Centre in Tokyo.
With regard to gaming paraphernalia, if you include consoles themselves, I’d like to say my old Atari 2600, but I don’t actually have it any more 🙁
In terms of actual game related items, I’ve surprisingly got very little. I used to display my set of Street Fighter figures I got from China back in the days when I had shelves.
These days I have a Yoshi t-shirt I wear quite often, and also a Star Wars Angry Birds shirt my sister bought me, despite never having played the game.
Only other things I have I think are some Mario Shoe laces and face washers I got from the Stars catalogue, and if you can include game boxes, I’ve still got my Quake 3 tin box.
So, that said, I probably would go with the Street Fighter figures if I still had shelves to put them on!
I actually managed to leave the house this weekend to go to the Rocket and Nob meat! Was so great to finally meet some of you out of towners that I haven’t met before! (Including Rocket, even though he’s living here now obviously!) Even though I wasn’t able to stay very long, it was great to just to be able to get out and do something social for a change!
Thanks for the funzies guys! Also the pizza! Was the first time I’ve had take away food in ages, and it was yummp! Hopefully we can all do it again sometime! 😀
I just learned a fun fact about The Division: apparently (for the beta at a minimum) client data was stored locally and not authenticated against the server during login. As a result, people have been editing their characters files to give massive stat boosts and unlimited ammo guns etc. I feel like it’s a safe bet to say Ubi will address this before release, but if they don’t…there goes PvP 😐
Worth noting that I had zero issues with people doing anything cheaty but as this knowledge spreads it could ruin the game.
Kinda glad I’ll be playing on console – I hear this type of stuff is only on the PC version. Seen a few videos of aimbots, super-speed movement and infinite ammo, as well as a stream where people were dying to invisible players or being shot through walls. Not cool.
Based on my understanding of it it will affect all platforms, it was just much easier to do on PC. Only an assumption cause I haven’t done too much reading on it yet.
Well, true, but because consoles are a closed environment (and modding isn’t too prevalent… yet) it’s much harder to do, and thus far less likely to become a widespread issue. The worst I’ve seen in Destiny, for example, is lagswitching (though with Destniy’s terrible netcode, it’s kinda hard to tell at times :P). For PC it’s just “download this program and run it in the background as you play.” My hope is that it gets fixed, otherwise the PC community will be dead inside a month of release; but also that it’s too convoluted on consoles to bother with for the vast majority of would-be cheaters… at least until it’s fixed.
TAYpoll!
Web browsers. Fullscreen or windowed?
I figure I’m probably in the minority here, but I always have my browser windowed in pretty much a 4:3-ish ratio. Not just because I’ve got other stuff going on in the background that I keep switching to, but I also find it infuriating whenever the text on sites stretches out the whole width of the window instead of being confined to a column of a certain width. Just find it way too trying to read the entire length of one line, then pan back to the start and try figure out where the next line actually is, and for the most part there doesn’t seem to be any reason at all for having the window stretch the full width of the screen, save for perhaps if I’m looking at a screenshot of something and want to check out the whole thing at once.
It sucks that 4:3 and 5:4 monitors don’t really exist any more, I’d much rather have one of them as a secondary screen considering I basically never use those extra columns down the sides.
Fullscreen for me!
This should answer your question.
This image makes me terribly uncomfortable.
Does this help?
*breaks out in a sweat*
Alright, alright, I’m done now.
You can still buy 4:3 screens believe it or not! As for me, generally fullscreen, which may seem a little extreme considering I’ve got a 4k screen and a secondary which is 1920,1080, but I think it’s just force of habit more than anything.
You mean like… not by trawling around on gumtree?
yeah there’s places that stock new ones! They are harder to find these days, but a lot of business’ still use them, especially for Point of Sale machines
Windowed
Mostly because I have stuff going on in multiple windows and easier to just switch if the overlap.
And that habiot flows over for my personal stuff as well
Windowed.
Fullscreen has too much blank space.
Oh good, a sensible person 😛
At home: fullscreen
At work: windowed for inconspicuousness
Fullscreen homie
Windowed. Most of the time. I leave things poking around the edges so I can keep an eye on them for notifications. Sometimes I work with multiple documents applications and only the relevant browser data needs to be sitting on only a portion of my screens.
On my PC it’s usually full screen, on my Mac it’s usually windowed, cos, I dunno why 😛
I snap mine to the right half of my 21:9 ultra-wide.
Hope everyone had a great weekend. Friday night I started playing The Witness, which is brainbending. Just when I think I’ve got a handle on a puzzle’s mechanics, I get to the last one in the area, work it out on paper, present my solution and it turns out to be wrong.
At 11, I jumped into The Division beta with some of my Destiny raid team. PvE stuff seems alright – hard modes seem to scale to the level of the group leader, which is nice – can’t say if loot drops scale as well. Shooting/cover mechanics are standard, no issues aside from accidentally forgetting which buttons are which :P. Skills look promising – looks like the self-heal is almost mandatory, but that will probably change when more unlock. The sticky grenade is awesome, but dangerous in the DZ. Loot system seems pretty cool – huge potential for customising weapons, min-maxing loadouts… though still concerned about the whole “best loot is in the DZ” thing – I assume this will be a much bigger deal at the end-game, but in the beta, it seems like the best gear you can get is from the DZ vendor, which takes some of the risk out of acquiring it – get DZ rank high enough, get DZ credits, buy gun; no need to extract it like dropped loot.
We ventured into the dark zone once we’d all hit level 7. People seemed pretty content to not dick over others, for the most part. The PvE stuff in the DZ is pretty fun; the tension of not knowing if a random will attack you is cool (although far less so when they actually do). I want to try it out again tonight, now that people are familiar with the way DZ works… I reckon it’ll give a good indication of how people will act in the actual endgame. Anyway, we got some cool loot, hunted some rogues, went rogue ourselves a couple of times by accident (those sticky grenades will splash other players, and if they’re non-hostile when it does, you go rogue) and a couple of times intentionally (our parting action as we were about to leave the DZ to equip our extracted gear was to hit an extraction point with four sticky grenades as people were placing their loot on the chopper – they were downed instantly, and we easily finished them off – yes, we are terrible people – and almost immediately we got wiped out by another nearby group we hadn’t noticed). I can future teams farming other players’ loot – luring them with a ready extraction point, then killing them and extracting the loot for themselves… Anyway, by the time we left the DZ, it was close to 5am, so I left my group to get some sleep. Still haven’t touched the loot I got from the DZ… will look through it tonight, I guess.
Saturday I played some more Witness, started Rise of the Tomb Raider for a few hours (which is pretty cool thus far), then hopped into Diablo – my wizard, who was getting challenged by T5 (red-bars were no problem, but blue and yellows wrecked me) found a fifth piece of the Tal’Rasha set I was working on within about half an hour, and stupidly didn’t realise it – thought it was only the fourth as I’d been wearing a different chestpiece that upped my fire damage. Played through some bounties, hoping for more drops to be able to complete the set, then started a Crusader. Got him to 20 pretty quickly by running hard rifts and bounties, but couldn’t really find a skill combination that I liked. Was feeling pretty tired after the late night/early morning, so opted for an early night.
Sunday I started by playing Pony Island. That game is amazing. Don’t read too much about it, just go play it. 😛
Went back to Diablo, realised I had 5 pieces of Tal’Rasha’s and a Ring of Royal Grandeur – facepalmed, then equipped my other two Tal’Rasha pieces and got the 6-piece set bonus… T5 became a cake walk, so I bumped it to T6… then T7… then T8… Finally found my equilibrium T9 – could deal with everything but the elite packs. So I tested out my new gear in some Grifts – started at my previous high-point of 22. Facerolled thorugh to 35-or-so, getting a gem of ease to 25… finished a 37 with a few minutes left, then kitted a level 70 weapon with the gem, dropped my new crusader into T6, and whacked a few things. Once he hit about 40 (in about fifteen minutes), I dropped to master to be able to kill packs more efficiently. A few hours later he hit 62 and I called it a night. Still not sure about the skills… will do more investigation on proper builds once I hit 70, but I hear a Thorns-focus is pretty viable…
And holy crap that post was way longer than I intended. Oops. 😛
Keep in mind that you lose DZ exp and a fair bit of DZ cash if you die in there, even when not rogue.
Indeed – and I’d hate to go in there solo with no-one to revive me. But working in a group, we all managed to maintain steady progress, and all hit DZ12 with about 3k DZ credits in about four hours without attacking non-hostiles (though we did hunt down some rogues, and defend ourselves the couple of times we accidentally went rogue ourselves). Which is why I’m keen to see how the attitudes have stabilised tonight – now that everyone who’s in the DZ has probably capped out on their progress, what will they be doing?
My point was more related to having a pre-defined objective with a definite outcome (tho the vendors’ stock will likely cycle periodically) rather than having to a) hope you find something from a drop/crate, b) hope you can extract the bloody thing successfully.
The Division beta was so much fun. Going to spend so much time playing the full release.
Outside of Dark Zone is pretty fun, especially with a group.
Dark Zone is what makes the game, without a doubt. So many interesting, tense and fun encounters with other players. Might write some of them up later.
A thought that I’ve had for a while, and ask TAY is much more interesting than ask LH – if a worker who has a higher than normal exposure to contagions (certainly anyone frequently exposed to bodily fluids – doctors, nurses, childcare workers, sanitation workers, etc) falls ill and it can be shown, on balance of probabilities, that it is probably due to their workplace – could they make a workers’ comp claim?
My guess would be yes, but the condition would have to without a doubt be proven to be directly linked to any of the stuff they came in to contact with. Perhaps not a particular batch of fluid, but my guess is that if you’ve come in to contact with fluids that contain a contaminant, and you develop symptoms attributable to the contaminant, then I can’t see why they wouldn’t be able to.
I would always assume no but each workplace is different.
Workplaces with that sort of exposure generally have employees sign off on procedures to eliminate or mitigate risks for that kind of exposure which can give them a fair bit of legal protection. It’s essentially why OH&S standards exists; it’s not just about protecting people, it’s also about protecting the workplace from employees doing the wrong thing and then looking for a payout.
This is what I thought, it would be an issue for these workplaces if people could make claims. Then again, I compare my wife and I – I sit behind a desk all day, and I’ve taken one sick day in 12 months; my wife works in childcare and probably uses 6-8 of her sick days each year and they’re almost all from gastro bugs that go around daycares and preschools. The nature of her workplace means that it’s basically accepted that you’ll need to take time off because children are flithy blighters, and so you’ve actually got 3 or 4 sick days a year if you come down the the flu, or are pregnant and need time, or need to take time to care for children/spouse/parents.
In the case of your wife, there would be OH&S requirements on the employer to make sure that all the staff are trained in things like proper handwashing and other hygiene practices. Worker’s comp would come into play if, for example, the handwashing facilities weren’t available, or the nappy bin wasn’t being emptied, or if the director failed to notify staff of an outbreak of contaigious illness.
I do think that we should have better hygiene in australia when it comes to colds and flu. Wearing a face mask when you’re coughing and sneezing is a good way to protect others, but we just don’t do it enough here.
I certainly saw claims of that nature when I worked in Worker’s Compensation back in 2007/2008 but the legislation may have changed since then and I wasn’t actually in a claims role at that time, so I can’t say for sure how such claims were handled – only that there were open notifications to that effect.
I’ve seen people get away with some pretty stupid compensation claims just because employers aren’t inclined to make a fuss about it, you must have seen some great stories…
Not worker’s compensation claims no, I only ever worked in underwriting/customer service. However I do currently work in public liability and I see some doozies, which certainly keeps things interesting.
Edit: actually, I did see one worker’s comp claim that was interesting – a guy was murdered in his hotel room while on a business trip.
I wasted way too much of my weekend on Elite. Turns out that playing with others is actually loads of fun. Some guy who was hanging around Ch’i Lin in an Asp asked if I wanted to wing up, took his invite and we started plundering the combat zone together. Another friend of his in an FDL joined in too. Another night I was with the FDL guy again, and he brought in a friend in a Corvette. That was hilarious, he kept using it to deliver a killing blow via ramming. Especially funny watching him just plough into a Cutter.
There was this one guy in an FAS though who kept jumping in and joining the opposing side. He gave us a warning when doing so, not just going straight for kills or anything, we mostly kept our distance. But then he started stealing kills, by ramming ships from his own side to death before we could finish them off. Me and the FDL planned to take him down, though he disappeared before we could act on that. Luckily he reappeared later, and we managed to get him. My first proper PvP battle I think – at least, in terms of running to completion. Props to the guy for sticking it out to the end, unlike that combat logger the other night. Loads of fun 😛 And way different to fighting NPCs, too.
In non-gaming stuff, I started work on resurrecting another forgotten piano piece yesterday. Already through the first four sections, hopefully will be in well enough a state of mind to get through the rest this week. Going pretty well so far though.
You should play some Billy Joel, that’ll get you in a New (York) State of Mind!
That won’t do at all. My mind needs to be firmly planted in New Orleans 😛
Was fun. You should join us in Bok – we had Corvette/Python/Vulture wing last night and a stream of pythons, clippers and ‘condas, nice high value. I made 1.4 mill in about 30 mins, and it was really good fun. We might have 2 ‘vettes in the group tonight!
Not until Ch’i Lin is free of the scourge that is Emperor’s Dawn!
(I totally missed why they are bad and need to go but all the cool kids are doing it so)
2 days left on that CG?
Good question. Sounds about right though, I know I saw something like 4 days left at some point recently.
TAY RPG Pathfinder on tonight at 7:30pm AEST, 8pm ACDT, and 8:30pm AEDT. Starring:
@redartifice @tech_knight @freezespreston @beeawwb
Having fought off a giant squid that attacked their ship, the party makes their way further west to investigate the beached whales.
Edit: Also don’t forget that we’ll be switching to Roll20 tonight for a smoother experience and we’ll be sticking with it from now on. All that’s required is just logging into Roll20 and joining the game but I can always send the direct link once I’ve jumped in.
*Lightning intensifies*
Calamari for dinner.
hooray, more fish.
Mollusc! 😉
Abelas thinks everything in the ocean is a fish and wants no part of it. In fact he’s been complaining since we left the city because he’s a city elf and wild peoples have nothing worth nicking and fencing.
hey are we going through Roll20
Oh yeah, probably should have mentioned that. I will edit it in now.

Hmmmm. Looks like there’s some PC parts available through that.
Who would that be through then?
Futu Online, whoever that is.
Ah right, cheers. I can get a Razer DeathAdder for $60 with free postage from them with that code, score.
Whelp, caved and got a Netgear R7000 router for $167. My dad has one and I was impressed with its performance the last few times I’ve been to their place. Been looking to replace my AirPort Extreme for a while now as I’ve had a bunch of issues with it (ie: the moment 2 things start doing things wireless, the connection shits itself).
I’m using an ASUS something or other flashed with dd-wrt.
Solid performance.
I think I’m kinda done with Fallout 4. I just wanna get through the story now. Except I have to now choose who to align myself behind, either the Brotherhood, the Railroad or the Institute. The best part about this is that’s it’s really not an easy decision. I actually find this better than New Vegas, every group has positives and negatives to their ideologies.
I really need to get back into Fallout 4 sometime. I put 30 something hours into the game but have yet to meet the Railroad of the Institute because most of my time was spent doing side stuff instead of the main story. When I do get around to playing it again I think I’ll just focus on getting the main story done and ignore all but the most intriguing side quests.
I gave up on my initial themantic run over the weekend and going to go back to a bog standard run with a new character and a jack of all trades mindset.
Main issue I had was low charisma and the focus on settlement building doesn’t really work well together
Division people: the beta has been extended by 24 hours. Should end around 10 pm tomorrow night.
Fuck you and your division.
I’m really sorry that this has lead to such a division between you and m-USER HAS BEEN KICKED FROM THE SERVER.
Brotherhood of Steel – Hates anything that’s not human, but they’re honest about it and work hard to create a safer world to live in.
Institute – They believe the ends justify the means, have a similar goal of making the world a better place.
Railroad – Working to give synths freedom and a place in the world. However, Desdemona is basically a tumblr user and believes anybody who’s not a synth is dangerous.
Neo could you spoiler Fallout 4 story content please? I’ve put my game on hold after meeting 2 factions however don’t want anything beyond that point spoilt.
HI TAY.
Shameless self promotion time.
For those of you who dont have me on twitter / facebook, heres a thing: http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/seansimpson
Edit: Worlds Greatest Shave. After having it for about 5 years, the beard is going.
I’d donate if I could, but kinda looking for my own atm, so unfortunately I won’t be able to.
no worries. totally understand man.
When’s shave day?
Officially between the 10th-13th March.
But I’ll be at my cousin’s wedding that weekend, so my day is the 5th.
Cool, I’ll throw some money your way before the end of the month. Nag me if there’s nothing in there by the 28th
So I just learnt that I sent out an email today to nearly every person on our database for an event we have next week. I have unwittingly given year 9’s the hope that they could start University this year, instead of waiting until they finish year 12.
I’m getting sacked in the morning <3
Edit: Turns out that in fact the email didn’t go out to ‘everyone’, because the content manager made a judgement call that I was wrong. THE SYSTEM WORKS :D:D:D:D
Oops! At least it wasn’t something nasty or private!
Haha that’s actually the defence I’ll be taking into the office tomorrow :p
Hahaha stupid year 9s.
Year 9s are generally my least favourite year group. My classes this year reinforce this.
Yeah, from discussions with teachers it that Yr 9 seems to be the year that most kids turn into hormonal little shits.
Random thoughts:
Ghost Recon : Wild Lands looks incredible. not many games i’m hyped for coming out this year, so I’m (im)patiently waiting to hear more about this one. sorta been a bit dead since the reveal at E3.
Rocksmith DLC is getting worse. Used to have rad packs that kept me going back to learn more stuff. the last few months have just been disappointing (in my opinion). Seriously. An Offspring pack? their music isn’t that interesting to play & they’re a bit on the irrelevant side of the zeitgeist now.
The Witness is fantastic. love the feeling when a puzzle clicks. No spoilers, but doing a section with some mazes last night, felt so good to just get it. Loved that epiphany of realising how to find the solution.
Hottest 100. just looked through the whole 200 to 1 list. I haven’t heard a single song on that list.
I’m officially an out of touch old man. & goddamn proud of it.
Edit: more random thoughts coz i’m bored at work.
i hope when australia ditches the monarchy they switch to a flag without a southern cross on it, so all the wankers will have to get their tattoos redone so they can reclaim their racist bogan status.
True Detective is pretty fantastic so far. only 2 eps in, but yeah… digging it.
You’ve got it wrong. You’re not an out of touch old man, you’re just no longer a stupid kid. The charts will always be dominated by teenagers listening to whatever they’re told to. Meanwhile everyone who grew up spread out into different genres and found good music that was actually worth seeking out.
So you’ve got like 10% of the people listening to music listening to music 90% of the people consider garbage, but the 90% has such varied taste that none of the music they listen to makes the list, even if they could all agree that it’s better than the stuff the 10% likes.
GODDAMN. PROUD. OF. IT.
seriously though. I just dont listen to radio anymore. most new music i come across is from watching live music in shitty pubs. never miss the supports. never know when you’ll hear something awesome.
I hate this comment so much. This kind of elitist attitude toward popular music is the fucking worst.
If you like popular music that’s fine. I’m not going to pretend to respect popular music but I really don’t care what people listen to. Enjoy whatever you want. I’m just saying that as a group this music is only seen as relevant because it’s the best of the music that’s heavily promoted and aimed at an easily exploitable market. There’s a reason that most of these songs are so quickly forgotten*. All being out of touch with this music means is that you don’t listen to the default.
*Not that music has to endure and become timeless to be good, but this stuff tends to fall of the face of the Earth right away.
Did you listen to Triple J this year? Surely you would have heard Hotline Bling?
I wish I hadn’t, all I can hear is the tune from the Wii E-Shop in the background…
I’m so very much looking forward to Wildlands. That E3 video totally did it for me.
I doubt we’ll hear much about this in 2016 except an announcement that it’s coming in 2017.
QUESTION:
looking for games like Ori and the Blind Forest. Metroidvania sorta stuff. Preferably pretty looking ones on PC.
any suggestions?
Slain! Coming March 24! Made by a good mate of mine Andrew Gilmour who goes by the handle of AlphaWolf! Can follow him on twitter for updates! @MrAwolf
Store page here! Apparently going to be around $13 when it drops!
http://store.steampowered.com/app/369070
I suggest replaying Ori.
…
From memory, some stuff Nifflas made (specifically the Knytt games) were Metroidvania-ey, and I think at least some of them are free: http://nifflas.ni2.se/ But they ain’t the prettiest around.
Also, Guacamelee is Metroidvania-ey, I think, and I’m fairly sure there’s a PC version of it.
But there’s always just a replay of Ori. 😛
What blaghman said, Guacamelee is a decent bit of fun.
GUACAMELEEEEEEEEE!
Also I remember hearing Aquaria was kind of Metroidy maybe? That’s going a ways back.
If you can get past the aesthetic a lot of people have been saying that Rabi-Ribi, just released on Steam, is a really good metroidvania. I’m not sure, haven’t played it yet.
Maybe something like Unmechanical, although might be a little linear for what you are looking for
Or Darksiders
I started my new job today. That’s Good
I nearly threw up due to being so nervous. That’s Bad
I didn’t though. That’s Good
I’ll probably get in trouble because I forgot to call a guy to set up my work email. That’s Bad
Everyone there is lovely and I get a higher wage. That’s Good
I get less days off & they wont be as reasonable about taking days off as my last boss. That’s Bad
Xcom 2 comes out this week. That’s Good
I won’t have the free time to play it or even pick it up. That’s Bad
I’m not sure how to feel about this post. That’s bad. 😉
Seriously though, congrats on the new job! Shame about the conditions, but yay for more $!
But how cursed is the frozen yoghurt? That’s what I want to know.
Pretty cursed
Good luck Cam, don’t stress too much, first days are always both you and employer finding your feet
Dear Microsoft & Windows 10, I do not wish to “rate” the calculator application. Please stop asking me to, it’s a fucking calculator application you twits, it does what it’s meant to.
Graphics are horrible on the calculator and framerate is pretty appalling.
1/10
They don’t even have predictive calculus, and how am I supposed to share my equations to twitter? There’s ZERO social media integration.
There’s no DRM on this one at least, that’s why I added 1.
1/10, doesn’t let me share to Facebook or Tweet my current additions, subtractions, divisions or multiplications.
Ignoring whether rating it is useful or not, it will stop if you rate it.
NEVER!
Rate it 1/5 and tell them to fix the fucking thing where the number entry field doesn’t have focus when you start the app up so you can’t just start it and then start typing, you have to click first. 😐
EDIT: Actually this might have been fixed in Threshold 2 / Redstone as my current build doesn’t have the problem \o/
Oh that’s a weird bug. I’ve never encountered that :/
It’s the way that it works in Win 8, 8.1 and initially 10 but my current build (I’m running an internal build, in-development version) doesn’t have the issue. So fixed it I guess.
No graphing options, no matrix operations, no ODE solver, no Zeta function implementation. Please fix or my score remains 1/10. 😛
I can’t turn it upside down and write ESSO, hELLO,or BOOBIES.
1/5.
Hint: Hold Alt and press Ctrl+Down.
Though, to be fair, the font kinda ruins it. Repeat, but replace Down with Up to undo. 😛That was one of my most frequent help desk inquiries during my years in purgatory. “My screen is upside down…”
🙂
Played lots of video games over the weekend. Well, lots of hours, not lots of games.
Played some Kantai Collection. Started grinding out expeditions to replenish my instant-repair buckets. Up to 30 now, but ideally need to have 100+ which seems unlikely with 8 days left. They confirmed that Graf Zeppelin will be a possible drop and I missed her last time so hopefully this time! Also really curious to see if they follow through on the promise of US ships as they’ve teased. May need to spend some cash to get the buckets back up. Decided there was no reason to keep Haruna at level 99 so I married my battleship and now have a single level 100 ship. Yay I guess? From now on I have to pay them 700 yen to break the level cap each time. 🙁 Luckily don’t have too many in the high 90s yet. Going to spend some cash anyway, I need more ship slots. Started working on leveling up Abukuma after a short stint on Kasumi before I realized there’s not much reason to level Kasumi aside from being able to launch landing craft – if I want to level another Destroyer I should focus on Akatsuki or Hatsuharu since they’re 3/4 the way there already.
Played a fair bit of Trails of Cold Steel. Finished chapter 1 and S-ranked it at the end. \o/ That means I got everything. Got a little way into chapter 2, left to go to the town and arrived but haven’t played it since then because my Vita battery died and that put a damper on my progress. It’s a great game but I feel like the structure they have doesn’t do it many favors. Each month being a sort of go to a town and complete a plotline thing means you feel like you’ve gotten a conclusion at the end of each chapter and then it has to start setting up a new plot and stuff. Trails in the Sky has this problem too, it takes 3-4 chapters before things start coming together. Given that the cold opening at the start of the game happens at the end of August, and it’s May in Ch2, I assume it won’t really speed up until chapter 5 or so. I still have some reservations about the dub cast too, though overall it’s good. I actually moved over to PS3 after my Vita ran out of juice but it just killed my forward progress. Will get back to it.
Started Rise of the Tomb Raider in the late afternoon last night. Then I started feeling sleepy and it was 4am. It’s very good. I was worried they’d make it too open-worldy but that hasn’t been an issue so far, it’s more Metroidvania than the previous one but it’s not really an open world. Some good platforming puzzle stuff but still feel like there’s not enough tombs. Played the Baba Yaga DLC and that had some good bits but holy shit that boss battle was a fucking nightmare to play through. I’ve progressed the story a fair bit too – progress meter tells me I’m at 30% but I don’t believe it. Arrived at
the buried city on the way through the copper minebefore I finished up last night. There’s been a few combat encounters that really sucked as well. The enemies have Uncharted 3 disease. You go behind cover – it’s a fucking cover shooter! – and they immediately spam grenades at you to flush you back out again. It’s insanely frustrating. I mean, fair enough once or twice in an encounter, but it feels constant and unrelenting. Now they’re also having fucking dudes that rush you and try and stab you (and fighting them means getting shot to pieces while you’re locked into a kill animation) and the last combat I had also had motherfuckers with shields which seem like they’ll be an amazing pain to fight when they inevitably appear in packs with normal dudes. Less of that and more traversal puzzles please. Still, it’s scratching an itch I didn’t know I had. Last game like this was Uncharted 3 and that was incredibly unsatisfying so probably haven’t played something like Tomb Raider / Uncharted since the first Tomb Raider in 2013.Incidentally my rig runs Rise of the Tomb Raider very well – used nvidia’s recommended settings then turned on the hair thing because the basic hair was creeping me out, so now no matter how dirty the rest of her gets, Lara looks like she’s stepped out of a shampoo commercial. Running at 1080p instead of the usual 1440p and at medium texture detail with some shadowing and whatnot disabled, but it still looks fantastic. I think I can wait on that GPU upgrade until mid-year when the next generation GPUs hit. People were saying that the game’s not as well optimized as expected from Nixxes, but I’m not seeing that at all – runs buttery smooth at these settings.
Maybe she’s born with it…
Maybe it’s better with the super awesome hair version activated instead of the standard billowing in the wind super silky version?
Maybe it’s surgery!
My hype level for the new Tomb Raider game has been like a 3 month relationship; first I was high at the prospect of a new Tomb Raider after just having finished off the last one, then I find out there’s going to be delayed platform releases and I was like “that’s ok I’m sure it’ll be a good game so I can forgive this”. Fast forward to now, I have way better options to play and I’m kind of pissed off I can’t play this game on the platform of my choice and have decided to only pick it up from the bargain bin at christmas this year.
Screw you square =@
I got it on Xbox One but then Microsoft too forever to get my replacement power brick out to me and then I was busy moving house and stuff and getting everything set up and then I broke my TV and by the time I had a setup I could actually play the Xbox One version on, the PC one was a week away. So I just ordered it on the cheap. Glad I did, it’s really good.
Fairly sure the exclusivity thing was Microsoft being like “shit, Sony’s going to cream us over the Holidays with Uncharted 4, how can we compete with them” and then paid a bundle for Tomb Raider and then Sony’s like “lol psyche” and delayed Uncharted 4 six months. So now you’ll get to play both games about the same time on PS4. 😐
I actually kind of hope that’s what happened. Games are rarely worse off for the extra development time, and if paying for exclusives (as in paying a sum to lock other platforms out, not funding a first-party studio) becomes an expensive marketing escalation tactic that can be thwarted by moving releases around, then maybe the assholes responsible will stop fucking doing it.
Exclusivity deals like with Tomb Raider had already gone the way of the Dodo. The impression I got is that Microsoft actually put money into the game’s development or marketing or both, because Squenix were making noise like they were pleased with the initial sales numbers. Same company that had a sook when the first game didn’t move 8 million at launch. 😐
Picked up Far Cry 4 complete edition on Xbox One on Sunday before the sale ended and spent all day downloading and installing the 32 gigs. Time got away from me last night (seriously about a billion chores just kept popping up every time I tried to sit down) and I ultimately got to “play” at about 11pm. With that much time gone I decided to watch the intro cutscene and then go for the “secret” ending that only takes about twenty minutes, which was pretty cool. I didn’t think it was possible but I already like Pagin Min more than Vaas, who appears to be an actual restrained lunatic instead of a bombastic edgelord. I might have to go pick up one of those cool figurines I’ve seen littering the corners of the nearby EB Games.
The best part of the “secret” ending was that it means I can not play the game anymore, and still consider it knocked off the list, since I reached an ending.
Ha, I suppose. I’ve been meaning to get into FC4 but I wanted a nice buffer after FC3 since they seem similar (but FC4 being bigger with more stuff). I’m looking forward to sinking some time into it.
I don’t know why I always buy FarCry games, since the only one I’ve actually finished was Blood Dragon. I had always get bored with the sandbox and missions, while still appreciating that they’re well made.
I tried to play Blood Dragon after finishing FC3 (which I loved, even with it’s dumb story) and just couldn’t get into it. I liked the vibe, just found playing tedious, hence the long wait until FC4 was out before jumping in.
I spent the whole game hoping for a jetpack wingsuit. Main reason I got through it was that it only had like 4 story missions, made it a lot easier.
Oh right, that Star Wars name thing is over.
That was so 2015. Gotta get with the times, son.

I am laughing so hard at this guy.
My first(!) immediate grievance with that post(!) is the friggin Exclam(!)ation mark(!)s in parentheses a(!)l(!)l over the place.
(!)
I didn’t even notice that. Now I can’t(!) not notice it.
Deleted now but assume entitled little so and so claiming that they bought dev kit 1 so they are entitled to the consumer release. But of random delusional ramblings with long bow justification.
Going to guess it ended with some form of ultimatum, saying they will go to court or ombudsman or police or similar. Bonus points if dad/uncle/brother/sister is ‘really high up’ in whoever they are going to take them too.
I saved some screenies of it 😛 But yeah you’re pretty much bang on the money there. Except add copious amounts of wank with how smart/mature/special this guy thought he was.
Something along the lines of Oculus changing the deal so while he thought he was buying something equivalent to what the kickstarters got it is now unequal and somehow this violates his rights? Idk. Surely must have been a troll, but maybe not.
He is probably just upset that the Rift costs twice as much as most people were expecting, which probably puts it out of his price range, and the kickstarters getting a free one probably feels like salt in the wound.
I think it would have been a better PR move to offer all DK1/DK2 owners 50% off the consumer version rather than giving away the units to the Kickstarter backers, that way everyone that paid up for an earlier model could have bought the CV1 for the price they were expecting, and the cost would have been about the same to the company.
But hey, they didn’t have to give anyone anything.
Hnnnnggg X-Com 2 reviews you’re killing me :@
I can’t wait anymore!! 🙁
How long till the holiday feeling wears off? I think it might be gone by this afternoon… ah well… 2 days of holiday feeling at work isn’t too bad.
Started playing Fire Emblem Awakening today because I finally have a commute to play in. I know that sounds weird enjoying a commute instead of driving. But my god – I get 90 minutes a day of uninterrupted time.
I started on ‘Normal’ and picked ‘Classic’ so dead people don’t come back. I can’t tell if I’ve made a mistake or not… Open to any tips/suggestions.
It sounds weird to think that sounds weird.
The roaming packs of monsters that you can grind for experience only tend to spawn once per play session. If you’re looking to grind, be sure to smack them around.
You can buy an item that summons more, and it costs less than the reward for beating them.
Unlimited grind to max out all the relationships 🙂
Welp, last night has pretty much convinced me Division’s endgame will be a shitshow. Went back into the DZ with my group – no openable chests, and ended up in an instance with about six groups and a couple of solos, everyone DZ rank 11-12. First thing my group came across was a rogue solo attacking a pair, who downed one person and got shredded as we arrived; then came back a few minutes later during an extraction, told people to “chill out,” then proceeded to sticky-bomb the extraction as people were attaching their loot – and got shredded again, having failed to kill anyone.
Every group went rogue at one point, and it turned into a game of 1v5 team king of the kill as each team found their ideal hill and lured other groups. Occasionally one of the solos went rogue, killed someone and took their stuff, then booked it and we spent a minute and a half chasing them around the map until his timer ran out, because if the rogue runs away, there’s literally no way to catch them – you might be able to do minor damage (which you’ll have to slow down to inflict), but they can just heal themselves without slowing down and keep running. This is somewhat exacerbated by the fact that they can just leave the beta zone to get ported back to the safe house to wait out their timer. Also exacerbated by the fact that they can run through a pack of AI, aggro them but not take any damage, and let them slow us down as their aggro transfers to the pursuers.
Essentially, all indicators point to the endgame being filled with bored teenagers. Oh well, I hope the PvE content is good.
I had a bit of that in the 30 minutes of was on last night too. I got the last laugh though, as after being reamed by a rogue group of three I stalked them till we were separated from the main population, then killed the first guy with a double headshot before he could react, took the second out with a grenade while he was reviving the first, then beat the third guy in a 1 on 1. Walked away from it with some nice blues and 5 DZ keys 😀
I think it won’t be as chaotic after release as your beta progress doesn’t carry across so people were playing the last night of it knowing there was no real repercussions to their characters. Could be totally wrong, though.
But that’s exactly what I’m talking about – once people are happy with their loadouts and get tired of searching for and failing to find a worthwhile upgrade, they’ll start to prey on other players, purely out of boredom. You’ll see the same thing we saw last night – people with nothing left to lose screwing with those who still do. It won’t happen straight away, but give it a week, a month at most.
Based on what I’ve seen, dying while rogue has zero repercussions to an end-game character. You lose a little DZ-Xp, some cash, and a few keys; XP would only be useful for matchmaking with others of your rank, so arguably losing XP/Rank would match you with newer/less-geared players, at best matching you with players unaware of your history, and at worst giving you a gear advantage against them; cash and keys are basically useless at this point, too, as there’s nothing left to acquire.
If there were a persistent reputation system, whereby the more you went rogue, the more you were marked as “untrustworthy” by the Division (this being visible to other players in your DZ instance – hypothetically, this “distrust” could be reduced by hunting down rogues yourself) then there might be a disincentive for preying on less-equipped players… but there’s not. No lasting repercussions.
I don’t think your rank is lost/degraded on death, it was just progression to the next rank? I don’t remember losing any ranks which would mean you don’t drop back against lower levels players.
I remember reading something about longer lasting marks against players but wasn’t sure if that was a future feature or something that would be a part of the game on release. A quick Google search aaand I can’t find the thing I was reading…
Ultimately, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens on full release. A lot of things can be adjusted in a month and a lot of stuff wasn’t included in the beta so it may be a far better (or worse) game than either of us are expecting.
I remember dying as a rogue and getting dropped back to Rank 11, so it definitely can revoke your ranks – looked like XP was continuous with arbitrary points marked as rank boundaries, so losing 300 XP will do just that, even if it means putting you back a rank as a result. The higher your rogue rank, the more you lost, too. Not sure if you lose rank if you die without rogue status, tho… can’t recall. You definitely lose credits and keys regardless of rogue status, tho.
A lot can happen in a month, but adding entire systems, even one as conceptually simple as this? When they haven’t even acknowledged the feedback yet, despite the earliest record of such a suggestion that I can find being a comment on a feature article on PS-EU’s blog last July? I’m not holding my breath, sorry.
Not sure why you’re apologising, you’re allowed to not like the game and be pessimistic about it 😛
Uh…no, wait, I mean…um…YOUR INTELLIGENCE IS LESS THAN THE ESTIMATED MEAN INTELLIGENCE OF THE HUMAN RACE. ALSO, I FIND YOUR SEXUAL PREFERENCES QUESTIONABLE.
IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT THOSE PREFERENCES ARE, JUST THAT THEY ARE YOURS, AND THUS TAINTED BY ASSOCIATION
“Sorry” was stupid shorthand for expressing regret – I’m allowed to feel bad that I don’t share your optimism, dammit. 😛
I mean… *cough*
This is exactly what happens in psychopath-simulators like DayZ, Nether, EVE Online, Rust, etc.
Initially, the game is partially PVE survival, with other players for PVP seasoning.
However, once some players get suitably established, they learn the patterns of PVE, play enough to grind up enough wealth/resources/knowledge so that death is a relatively trivial set-back compared to a new/casual player, and the PVE holds no additional challenges. They can go grinding for more gear, but without PVP to lose it, there’s no point to stockpiling it.
In pursuit of challenge, the game’s veterans turn the ‘world of survival’ into basically a PVP deathmatch arena lobby sprinkled with NPC enemies and KoS ‘matchmaking’ (ie: you see it, you’ve been matched with it and PVP with it), and expect everyone else to be OK with that. (Or better, for some, not be OK with that, so they can feed on the schadenfreude. Hence: psychopath simulator.)
Oh, that’ll definitely happen somewhere along the line. The difference here is that it’s super easy to avoid the majority of those issues cause the PvE-only area is significantly larger.
Also, for all Ubi’s talk of putting the best gear in the PvP area I bet that there’ll be comparable gear in PvE, either on release or as a result of user feedback.
Yep. Well, I’m kinda biased, as I tend to see things that fit my theory about games that encourage dickish behaviour – the game gains a reputation that scares away new players, while the existing playerbase scares off current players who don’t fit the psych profile. The playerbase then faces a choice – accept that all they have left is fighting amongst themselves, or leave for greener pastures and let the game die. Most of the time, it’s the latter… which is why you see that boom every time a new survival game gets released.
Aside: Tho, I’ve got to respect EVE Online – they’ve brought inter-arsehole PvP to a whole new level.
I’ve seen more than a few games die because of this, and I can’t help but think they’re made with full knowledge that they won’t need to be supported or maintained for long.
EVE’s dick moves are on a completely different plane of existence.
Those escapades are amazing reads.

Lincraft half price fabric sale starts today for members. I was able to buy fabric for the squid hats. IT’S HAPPENING!
They should be called squid lids.
It’s technically “hair” but it sounds a bit weird
Sweeeet!
Wingman just told me she’s been roped into going to a dinner with Pillowmaker, Sketchbook, a girl in the year below us who I can’t remember if I had a name for but apparently it came up at one of the Friday night drinks that she had a thing for me (despite displaying no signs to corroborate this afterwards), and my second year teacher from college.
I can’t imagine a more perfect nightmare scenario, were this to take place two years ago.
*grabs popcorn*
Less than 24 hours to American Truck Simulator…
Just purchased Steam keys on GMG for XCOM 2 and the new Naruto game.
How much was x com?
US$60. I then used a 20% code, but they now have a 25% code.

My cousin made a post on Facebook about how he’s worried about a friend of his, who spends all their time yelling at their computer, not socialising with real people. My Mother’s response was “Friend, or cousin?”
If you need me, I’ll be applying this steroid cream to all affected areas.

I shouldn’t get excited because this will probably be something disappointing but OMG!
PSA: don’t buy Tales of Symphonia on Steam. It is an absolutely horrid port.
– Contains multiple text bugs, mistranslations and typos which weren’t present in the PS3 or Gamecube versions
– Locked to 30fps
– Locked to stupidly low resolution (to the point that you can run the GC release in Dolphin and it’ll look significantly better)
– Has invasive, stupid DRM attached (VMProtect) despite being a decade-old game sold at a budget price.
EDIT:
– Seeing people complaining about a long load time whenever you go into the menus too. 😐

Durante should just set up his own PC porting company at this point. He’d actually do it right.
(Also I would love to see Gust games get PC ports too)
“What the hell is wrong with you guys? You released a shoddy, sub-standard pile of shit that a community modder fixed in three hours.”
“Sounds to ME like that’s three hours we didn’t have to pay our porting team for! That’s like a quarter of our budget, saved!”
Cheers I was actually considering this purchase but good to know!
In other news:
http://www.siliconera.com/2016/02/02/black-rose-valkyrie-announced-compile-heart-playstation-4/
Sounds interesting. Compile Heart’s stuff is often a bit crap but they’ve been getting better over time. Maybe this will be a bit more serious? I’m liking the concept of a JRPG where one of the party members is a traitor but the traitor changing depending on your playthrough, since it sort of suggests a game where you’re encouraged to play more than once or which is fairly fluid in the way it reacts to your decisions.
Also holy crap, Kousuke Fujishima doing the character art? They teased this a while back saying people would be surprised when they saw who was doing the art for their next game and I didn’t believe them. For those that don’t know, Fujishima is the character designer for two big Japanese games franchises, Sakura Wars and Tales.
PSA: If you’re on Windows 7, 8 or 8.1, you’re probably going to get Windows 10 thrown at you via Windows Update as it’s now recommended rather than optional (you can disable it though):
http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/02/ready-or-not-here-comes-windows-10/
You should upgrade if you can. It’s a big improvement.
(Standard Disclaimer: I work for Microsoft as part of the Operating Systems Group, so any advice I give to upgrade is going to be biased)
I like my windows 10
I am planning on Windows 10 for my new PC build… hopefully I don’t end up regretting it as I did hear some bad stuff about files getting deleted, among other things I’m worried about but apparently I can turn off.
Files getting deleted?! That’s news to me.
To be fair it was probably due to some strange complication of upgrading a Windows 7 laptop to it that may have not been spec’d for Windows 10.
What did it delete?
If I remember correctly, entire folders saved in the user’s Documents’ folder, files that were saved locally and downloaded.
Have not observed this happening myself. I’m going to say they were holding it wrong. Probably moved to a microsoft account while installing and the files are still there under the local account.
What’s actually improved over 8.1?
The big-ticket bullet points are:
– Start menu instead of start screen (though you can bring back the 8.1 behavior if you want)
– ‘Modern’ (formerly Metro) Apps (from the Windows store) now exist in windows like normal apps, instead of full-screen only. The not-allowed-to-call-it-Metro stuff is way better integrated with the shell in general.
– Cortana if that’s your thing.
– DirectX 12
– Continuum, which basically lets you use your machine like a tablet if it’s a tablet, or a PC if it’s a PC, or toggle between the two if it’s a hybrid device.
– Ability to use fingerprint or facial recognition to log you in (Windows Hello)
– Xbox stuff that enables built-in game streaming, screenshots and things, and IIRC lets you stream Xbox One games to the PC but sadly not vice-versa
– Virtual desktop support (!)
– Action Center (thingie in the tray that collects system notifications in one place, it’s super useful)
– A bunch of security improvements under the hood.
– Much quicker, non-destructive rollout of new updates (I’ve upgraded my OS version a dozen times over the top of itself now without issue)
Really though Windows 10 is an incremental step over 8.1. There’s too much in it to say that it’s 8.2 (it’s more like 8.5 if you consider the amount of features that go into Windows service packs & point releases normally), but it’s not as big a jump as say 7 was over Vista. It’s also free at the moment. If you’re going from 7 to 10 it’s a huge jump though since you get all the improvements in 8 as well.
The menu bar is black now.
You can actually make it sync the color to your desktop background. Also technically it’s ever so slightly transparent, about 90% opacity.
For me the biggest thing was probably the startmenu and the fact that the metro apps are no longer all obnoxiously mandatory full-screen.
Windows… windows everywhere!
I love Windows 10 – but my upgrade on my Win7 desktop has become progressively screwy over the last few months.
I used to use a local account, no password, just boot up and drop straight into desktop. When I upgraded to Windows 10 thought I’d use MS account I’d been using on my 8.1 laptop. Now things have gone weird:
– Entire directories are flagged as belonging to the old local account (which I can’t remove?) so need to “administrator” approve access.
– Settings don’t sync between PC and laptop (ie. start menu) despite settings sync being on for both machines.
– Both machines are not in the ‘Homegroup’ but apparently one is available. However, I can access shared folders via network on either machine.
– I can’t make my desktop skip the login screen which is a pain when it installs updates, restarts and then gets stuck at the login screen instead of keeping everything running.
Just about ready to move everything I want to a different drive and nuke the SSD… but time and patience is lacking with a newborn in the house.
For the permissions problem you just need to make yourself the owner of that directory permanently. Right click the offending directory. Properties. Security tab. Click advanced. Change the owner of the directory to your new account. That should stop UAC prompts to access that stuff I think.
Settings sync is a bit weird and often syncs stuff you don’t expect. Make sure both your machines are logged into OneDrive (sync is enabled through it). I personally don’t like it syncing that much, because there’s no way to designate one machine as the ‘master’ so it will override my settings on my main machine with, say, my laptop’s settings sometimes because it assumes that the last machine you were on is the master machine. Very frustrating.
Homegroup sharing just makes things easier. You can always share via SMB as well which is what you’re doing. One of your machines has got an account that has been homegroup-joined at some point. You should be able to create a new homegroup and that should make the others go away. It’ll ask if you want to just join the existing one but tell it to fuck off and make a new one. I think. Homegroups are stupidly complicated for something that was meant to make things easier.
Skipping the login screen especially on a laptop is a terrible idea and is a massive security risk and you shouldn’t do it.
WinKey + R, type netplwiz & hit enter. Select your username, then uncheck the ‘users must enter a username and password to log into this computer’ option. It’ll ask for your password and then it’ll be set.To stop it asking for a password when you log in after it’s gone to sleep, Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, change Require sign-in to ‘Never’.
To be fair Windows 10 is amazing. I love it. Never really enjoyed an OS as much as I have Win 10, well I really did like OSX 10.5/6 Leopard/Snow Leopard.
OSX Leopard and Snow Leopard felt like the peak. All started to go a bit sideways from Lion onward IMO.
Couldn’t agree more. I dunno what happened with Lion but I never liked it. Ended up reverting to Snow Leopard on my MacBook in the end too.
Lion was where Apple started going full walled garden in a big way. App store, iOS-like shit everywhere, Gatekeeper and stuff.
Yeah I hated that. As much as I want a MacBook again, I don’t think i’d what has happened to the OSX ecosystem :/
Edit: Which is weird because I actually quite like iOS & it’s ecosystem, I guess I just think it doesn’t belong on a computers operating system.
My last purchase I migrated away from Macbook Pro back to Windows and am so happy I did. High-end laptops with decent build quality and aesthetics finally exist in the Windows world. If only I’d known about the trackpad in the MSI GS60 though, urgh.
Yeah, a lot of the laptops now available with Windows are really nice. I like the build quality of the Razer Blade, they’ve done a great job on that, minus the price 😛
So far the only difference I’ve noticed with Windows 10 over Windows 7 is my PC seems to be taking a bit longer to shut down. Honestly though I’m just glad I don’t have to deal with Microsoft spamming the upgrade at me anymore. It’s worth a slightly slower shut down speed just to not have to deal with that.
It should boot faster though? 8 has some big enhancements to boot up time which carried over to 10.
I think it might be booting faster. I couldn’t tell if it was 10 or the fact I’d cleaned up by harddrive a bit that was causing that though. Good to know it’s 10. On the subject of boot ups, is there anyway to disable the splashscreen that pops up at the start before the login screen? On 7 it’d always take me straight to the login screen, but now I have to click to get the login screen to pop up.
That’s odd, it should take you straight to the login screen.
EDIT: Oh, the splash screen, I get what you mean now. I’ve been using 8 and 10 for so long that doing that is second nature. You don’t have to click. Spacebar also works. I think any key works.
But you can turn it off with a group policy change (may be impossible for a domain-joined machine) or a registry hack:

Thanks for the heads up. Will get it eventually, but not yet. Stupid Microsoft. Worst was when they put in a shitty Skype upgrade as one of the important/recommended updates. Such a PITA to roll back and get all the update paths blocked off whenever a new one slips through. Arseholes.
What’s wrong with upgrading skype?
The vomit-inducingly awful changes to the interface, mostly.
I guess I never really used it a lot before but the UI seems fine right now, not sure what the issue is.
They keep making it uglier whilst also increasing the amount of wasted space on screen, stretching things out so they take up more space while presenting even less information and keep trying to hide more and more information and functions that were previously present. Also fuck the cloud. I think it was the update after 6.21 or something like that, it was just awful and each time I see it on friends’ machines it seems even worse.
My Win10 laptop disagrees. I was reading that news on the train – got to work and booted my laptop to a “checking disk for errors,” followed by an Automatic repair that proceeded to bluescreen. The last few times it’s tried to install updates, it’s bluescreened into a boot/bsod loop.
I never thought I’d say this, but they can pry Windows 8 from my desktop from my cold dead hands.
That sounds like hardware problems.
It does, doesn’t it… but they only presented after updating to Win10. I never had anywhere near this many issues with it when it was running 8.1.
See if it still happens after you roll back.
It could also be dodgy drivers, especially on a laptop. I’d be going to the manufacturer’s site and grabbing latest Win10 drivers for everything, they don’t necessarily appear in Windows Update properly.
But yeah, that sounds a lot like the weird creeping issues I had with a machine I built ages ago that had a faulty SSD that would randomly corrupt bytes by toggling a bit. Took a while but over time certain things would just die or go weird and then eventually windows would do an automated repair and ‘fix’ it for a bit only for the rot to recur.
I had so many issues trying to get Win10 to install correctly that it ended up being a fresh install after three days of trying (and two fresh installs since then to resolve bsod-boot-loops after failed updates) – I’m not particularly enthused about nudging that house of cards again any time soon.
Unfortunately, the manufacturers’ site doesn’t list drivers for win10, so S-O-L there. And given the headache I had installing it, it doesn’t seem like it’s (at least, entirely) due to creeping errors like you describe… Oh well, it works, mostly, as long as I don’t try to update anything.
Have you spoken to MS support on twitter or anywhere else? It seems like your case would be interesting. I reckon it’s definitely something hardware related. You could try force-installing Win8 drivers even. Some of the drivers that WU has for Win10 are bad. The standard network drivers that Win10 installs for my laptop drop nine network packets out of ten. :\
Nope. I’ll try a fresh reinstall closer to their “free upgrade” offer expiry, and if it’s still an issue, I’ll try installing it on the HDD, but until then I’ll put up with the mostly working system. It’s not like it crashes randomly – it’s only ever on boot, so as long as it recovers it’s not much of an issue. There was a point where every BSOD would take out my NIC until I rebooted a second time (ie. boot-to-BSOD-to-reboot with no wired network card detected until I reboot again), which was fun – thankfully that stopped last month. C’est la vie.
90% humidity by 9am, ugh, and I have to go mow the lawn, fml.
American Truck Simulator is now available on Steam!

Argh, the Windows 10 nagging is getting out of hand, it came down as an auto update at my old workplac last night.
Chaos.
Got me some contract work for today though…
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3024278/windows/you-will-upgrade-to-windows-10-inside-microsofts-strong-arm-upgrade-tactics.html
I honestly wouldn’t mind installing it. Providing it would work! I get to the reboot point, see the win 10 logo and a spinny circle, then black screen followed by NOTHING. I suspect it’s something to do with my motherboard not having UEFI, as all the fixes that have fixed that issue for others either don’t work, or I can’t do due to not having UEFI 🙁
I had this happen to me with the 8 to 8.1 upgrade and it was caused by hardware IRQ conflicts which made me feel like I’d gone into a timewarp to 1996 or something. Completely removing an old unused WiFi card and clearing out its drivers in safe mode fixed it.
Yeah I’ve been through the whole remove all USB devices etc and wipe drivers. Never had wifi, which seems to be the cause for a lot of people. Just nothing I do seems to make it work. I’ve tried everything I can except for removing all but the c: drive, but I don’t really want to go down that path as it’ll break the links to the software I have installed on the other drives, and I’ll be damned if I’m gonna re-install all that shit again. I’ll just wait til I get a new mobo/cpu I think. At least then I have a really valid reason to go through all the hassle 😉
It’s funny, because I wanted to upgrade to Windows 10 from 8.1, but sat on some invisible waiting list for months after its launch, and that made me grumpy. The only thing that shits me is that cortana only talks to you if you talk to her first, and not type to her. Also, the hassle of getting a proper voice pack (Jen Taylor) instead of the horrible localized ones is too much. It should just be an option, not something you have to jump through hoops for.
iOS upgrades, on the other hand…
It’s almost amusing how the conversation with my iPad goes, now.
“Hey, an update to your OS is available! Do you want to download it now to install later, or just install it right now?”
“No, neither, I’m good thanks.”
“OK, so are we going to schedule it for a specific time, or just get reminded later?”
“Uhm. Where’s the option to not do either of those?”
“There isn’t one!”
“Ugh. Fine. Later.”
“See you in a few hours!”
Pushy, pushy, pushy.
Wait, this already got deployed? I was wondering what ate a few extra gigs of my quota last night…
Feb 1st.
And I was wondering why my internet was running so slowly. Wife was on Netflix, and steam was auto downloading something – I can usually still load webpages, but not the other day – formatting problems, broken images and timeouts everywhere I went.
Help they’re trying to get me to do more work.
Boss is thinking of getting me to try and whip up some kind of a browser-based rhythm game to get some users to test out, and see how that goes.
Rhythm game with Fishgief singing Turbo Lover?
10/10 would rhythm pizza again. I mean thief. I mean you know what I mean!
But Fishgief hides his beautiful face!
With the recent increase in talk about Windows 10, I’m genuinely curious: who here has personally had issues moving to the new OS, and did you do an upgrade or a fresh install?
After a couple of upgrades and a couple of fresh installs (at home and at work) I’m yet to have any real dramas. Not sure if this puts me in the minority or the majority.
Only issue I had upgrading from 8.1 (which itself was an upgrade from 7) was configuring Cortana afterwards. Still haven’t got it right, have given up on the dream.
Upgrade; had AMD graphics card issues a while back and had to switch to Nvidia; upgraded when I did the swap.
My colour grading suite crashed constantly, and I had to go back to Win7, other than that and the forced updates etc. it wasn’t giving me too much trouble.
We are looking at switching to the linux version of our software now though, the Windows issues going forwards look like they will cause us ongoing problems.
Due to a complete lack of space on my C drive, after futzing around for a few hours I had to resort to re-installing Windows 7 from scratch, then installing 10 over that. Took a bit of time, but wasn’t really a huge issue.
My upgrade from Windows 8 was basically flawless actually. But then my computer was fairly new anyway at that point (around a year old) so that might have had something to do with it?
When I tried to upgrade my laptop from 8.1 to 10 some months ago I was unable to do it. The upgrade told me I needed something like 6 gig free space, and I had about 15 gig free, but after downloading 10 and trying to install it it told me I didn’t have enough free space to upgrade. That laptop only had a total of about 30 gig memory to begin with though so I’m not surprised it couldn’t upgrade properly. It was only a cheap thing I’d picked up so I had something to write on when out and about.
I just can’t get it to install stably on my laptop, no matter what I try. First tried an upgrade from 8.1 – the store wouldn’t let me authenticate at all. Forums told me there was an issue during install and that I should do a fresh install. Did so, same issue. Third install, I could use the store, but couldn’t install anything because Windows thought its updater was broken, and suggested reinstalling Windows. Redownloaded the install media (in case that was what was causing the corrupt installs) and the first fresh install lacked the taskbar and start menu – I could browse the desktop, context menu was there and allowed a roundabout way to navigate the filesystem, but it was unusable. A few install attempts later, I can use the store. Apps occasionally break for no apparent reason, but reinstalling them fixes the issue for a time. I can do most of what I’d like – tho it refuses to install Visual Studio cos something is still preventing an old .NET library from successfully installing… but after three days of constant reinstalls, I kinda just accepted it as “close enough,” even if it does BSOD every other boot.
By everything I’m hearing, I’m in the minority, but screw upgrading to Win10 on my main gaming rig after everything I went through to get my laptop even remotely usable. After all this, and the BSOD-causing update they pushed out on Win8.1 last year (or year before last), I’m having a real hard time trusting Microsoft’s OSs.
– Clean install on my Mum’s new machine worked flawlessly.
– Upgrade on my laptop initially rejected due to trying to force it to upgrade and then finding that it didn’t like me trying to install an en-US upgrade on en-AU.
– Upgrade on my laptop forced before MSI had officially added Win10 support caused all sorts of issues, WiFi drivers were the main problem however the WiFi hardware itself was faulty so I still don’t know if it was the beta Win10 drivers or the card itself. Went back to 8.1, then sent it in for warranty repairs, then upgraded to Win10 and by that point 10 was officially supported on the hardware and it works flawlessly. Threshold update came through fine. Now running latest internal builds.
– Upgrade on my work laptop was flawless, have been flighting Win10 builds since insider preview. Threshold update worked fine. Now running latest internal builds.
– Upgrade on my home PC didn’t happen until the start of this year because it wasn’t plugged in for months & I was worried about MSI motherboard compatibility. Upgraded fine, works perfectly. Because of timing I ended up going straight from 8.1 to the newer Windows 10 release (TH2) but now running internal builds.
– Work desktop in AU was pushed the upgrade at the start of 2015, upgraded fine and worked fine for development. Haven’t used it since November, assume it’s been reclaimed by now.
– Work desktop here in the US came with 8.1, did a clean 10 install immediately. Some GPU issues but that’s because it’s got an AMD workstation GPU and AMD’s drivers are shithouse. Works perfectly aside from that. Running internal builds.
Currently so confident in it that I’m running running internal Redstone builds on my home machines. Not on the fastest ring but on the slightly slower cadence, release branch which means I get a new build every week or two (meaning I do an OS upgrade each time!) So far aside from a bug that caused an error dialog to pop up once a day on my desktop I have had no issues. Did have a problem upgrading to a new build on my laptop but the install rolled back to the previous one with no issues. Win10 running on 4 machines I own or use, plus my Xbox One technically as well.
I’m pushing my update through today. Let’s see if I can be the first for something to go catastrophically wrong.
Upgrade. No issues.
I’ve had issues with my pc, but others I’ve done are fine. My PC is a complicated beast though, and old, so I expected no less 😉
I didn’t have a single issue. Went from a fresh install of Win 7 Professional to Win 10 with real ease, heh.
I did an upgrade from Windows 7 to 10. I have only had 1 consistent problem. If I power up the computer with an external hard-drive attached, I can’t access it. I either get an I/O error or it times out. However, if I power up the computer then attach the external hard-drive it seems to work fine.
Sounds like it might be identifying the external drive as a bootable device and trying to load Windows from it. Cleaning up the system files on it should sort it out, but a format definitely will 😛
The computer boots fine with the external hard-drive attached. It just has a spaz attack if I try to access it after windows has finished loading. Overall, it’s not a big issue, I just have to remember to unplug the drive after turning off the computer.
I just found it weird because I didn’t have this issue with Windows XP or 7.
Try going into Device Manager (right click start), locating the entry for the drive, then right click and uninstall, then go Action -> Scan For Hardware Changes to have it re-install the driver. Probably won’t fix it but the problem might be a faulty driver it’s bought over from 7 and sometimes flushing out a driver and reinstalling fixes things.
Thanks. I’ll give it a go tonight.
I’m thinking of having a booth in Artist’s Alley at Supanova Sydney this year for my 3D Printed Props, anyone interested in sharing a booth/costs?
It is $935 for a booth, table and electricity, if anyone is interested email me on originaltrilogy at the gmails…
wait, what? I read it was $330.
$385 (earlybird, $495 full) for a single table-width area with no power and I think a chair.
$935 is for a shell-booth (3 tables wide)
I’m just looking for someone to offset the cost a bit, not necessarily go full halvsies.
(Melbourne is cheaper than Sydney)
Ah, That makes more sense, but hell these booths are expensive as ****
3d printed, hey.
I think, and I could be wrong, but you also need public liability insurance.
Not sure if you can jump on Supanova’s policy for a fee or if you need to get your own. I had some for my production company and it’s not the cheapest thing in the world, especially if it’s for a one time thing.
@shane has experience exhibiting at Artist’s Alley. I’m sure he’d have better info than me.
I already have PLI, but thanks for the heads up!
Spot on.
@pixel_the_ferret_viking I was cleaning up some old screenshots on Steam and came across this:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=11371744
Maaan, I miss that game…but you just know if we jump back into it it’ll ruin the memory.
So much fun!… But i agree, having gotten used to “well controlling” games like GTA V i think the memories will get tainted 😛
I do wish more games would steal the customisation that game had. That’s a custom shirt I made and the Kotaku van 😛
Back when they had that horrible green
The Kotaku Van was fucking glorious! GTAV does have something similar with Crews doesn’t it? as in, you can put the crew logo on your car?… Not as great but still
Yeah, you can put the logo on your car for like $20k…and the logo looks massively out of place and a bit shit on all my cars 😛
Sigh. That was such a good game if you could get past the lag and had a crew to roll with.
That character creator and symbol-maker was out of this world. Hands-down the best character customization until Black Desert came along.
Ugh, that game jam article and talking with Wingman has got me on way too much of a nostalgia trip about college. I miss 2012. Things were good then.
*Sigh*
I wish I could go back to college, life was so simple back then. What would I give, to go back and live in a spurn with a meal plan again? I wish I could go back to college, in college you know who you are. You sit in the quad and you think “ohmygod, I am totally gonna go far!”
What?
Holy beans, you had such a different experience to me.
At uni, I’d just sit in the quad and be all “ohmygod I love chicken salt on this $3 cup of fries”.
Because by that point I already knew I had no future.
“Ah, 2012. Back when MSN Messenger was a thing.” – Gooky
It was thanks to MSN Messenger that I have my long distance girlfriend, we first really chatted through there rather than just mail back and forth, I’ll always honour MSN’s memory 🙂
…… This was my exact experience with MSN Messenger. OMG were we dating?!
You definitely didn’t sound like her in the Warhammer 40k RP sessions 😛
So what you’re saying is we’ll never really know…..
Techie: Say something sexy, baby
Girl: BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! SKULLS FOR THE THRONE OF KHORNE!
Techie: You always know exactly what to say
Mine also. Triplets!
*grabs popcorn*
Travesty of the highest order, No Sookie!!!
I can’t believe it. I mean, I get that it’s probably impossible to schedule with how much work she’s getting these days (and kudos to her for that! Even if I can’t stand her movies), but is it really Gilmore Girls without Sookie?
Also, everything I’ve been reading has been saying ‘reboot’. Reboot? Not continuation? Errrrrr. I am not as enthusiastic about that.
Wait what?
Here I was thinking it was just some kind of reply fail from Tigerion.
THIS IS A TRAVESTY OF THE HIGHEST ORDER AND DESERVES IT’S OWN POST
Yeah that word has been concerning me as well. And when they are approaching the same actors, I can’t see how it can be anything but a continuation. I think the mean reboot as in, it’s been 10 years since the final, and this is where things are at now.
You know what does need a reboot?
ReBoot.
Yes.
Apparently there’s one in development at the moment. Don’t know if the same people are doing it though.
Ubisoft Humble Bundle – is it worth dealing with uPlay for it?
https://www.humblebundle.com/
$1+
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger
Grow Home
Rayman Origins
Average+
Far Cry 3
Splinter Cell Blacklist
ACC: China
(+more, coming soon, as per usual)
$15+
AC: Rogue
The Crew
Pure uplay or steam through uplay?
That said Yes, I really enjoyed Gunslinger as long as you go into it knowing it is a story being told through a bunch of line em up shooting galleries.
Although I originally had a typo there of Ginslingers and suddenly had a number of taybies’ GOTY
It’ll be steam+uPlay. I’ll go all in if I do get it, AC: Rogue and The Crew are the two I’m keen for, and maybe Blacklist. I’ll happily play though Black Flag again if that ends up in the bundle, since I haven’t booted up the 360 in 18 months.
If it is through steam and they add black flag I’ll grab it. Otherwise might just grab grow home at the dollar level
I wonder if anyone has modded Black Flag to take out, like, 90% off the Assassins Creed parts. I don’t know why Ubi felt the need to attach the AC franchise to a perfectly good pirate title.
I haven’t actually played it yet. ACIII was the last game I played
That’s a terrible place to leave the series; I really didn’t like III. If you like the golden age of piracy, and thought the sailing missions in III we at least “alright”, then you’ll like Black Flag.
Well it wasn’t so much leaving the series as I don’t have a huge amount of time so I’ve been working my way through them. I only just finished ACIII last year, so when I see black flag on sale I’ll probably grab it. Have heard nothing but good things about it, and i didn’t mind ACIII
AC: Rogue is good but maybe not $15 USD good. Rayman Oranges is fantastic though and have heard that ACC China is good too. Heard only bad things about The Crew though. Find it kind of funny that even in a car game you have to find radio towers to reveal icons on the map…
Call of Juarez and Grown Home are Steam keys (probably launched through Uplay), the rest we know about are Uplay keys, by the looks of it. If it were all Steam, I’d pick it up just to try ACC:C and Rogue.
Quick peek at the site indicates most of the titles are uplay only, a couple steam.
Also, XCOM2 comes out on Friday, so this would just be an exercise in topping up my pile of shame.
XCOM 2!!!!
*ahem* I mean yes there were other words in this comment aside from XCOM 2. Carry on.
I’m suddenly reminded of 80s space guy from the LEGO movie for some reason…
SPACESHIP!
I think I end up posting a link to that every time Gooky and the gang start talking about Elite…
… so I post that link alot.
Sydney peeps:
Considering roadtripping to visit friends in Canberra over the Easter weekend, because that’s the only time we can. Is the traffic along Cumberland Highway/M2/M7/Hume going to super awful, or is it mostly heading in the other direction?
It’s the Easter weekend, so everything everywhere is going to be awful.
Disclaimer: I don’t drive anywhere, and I’m a jaded bastard
Easter this year isn’t in the school holidays, so while there will be some traffic from people taking advantage of a 4 day weekend, it won’t be quite as bad as school holiday traffic. Usually the worst traffic is just on the Hume around Narellan and Campbelltown as you get out of Sydney. Once you’re on your way to the highlands it should be ok (unless there’s an incident). Don’t forget to stop at Bowral for a pie from the Gumnut Patisserie 😉
Thanks! I didn’t realise that it wasn’t going to be school holidays, that should help a whole lot. I don’t think I’ve been to Bowral since I was a child, what’s so amazing about Gumnut Patisserie?
It’s won plenty of awards and they do wonderful things with pastry. The southern highlands is about half-way between Sydney and Canberra, so it’s a nice little detour on the way (My parents live in Mittagong, about 5-10 minutes from Bowral).
Sounds like a much better stop than Goulburn.
Okay, so I think there’s something wrong with me. I like Miller Chill with Lime. It’s only 4% but it’s not bad. It’s also $20 for 2x 6 packs at Dan Murphy’s this month for the ‘My Dan Murphy’ club members lol.
You’re a monster.
Yep. That’s me in a nutshell.
😛
Go log into a homebrewing forum and say that, you might cause someone to have a heart attack.
There are many many many beers better than it, but I agree, sometimes a Miller Chill goes down easily, like that hooker I picked up last night.
Boom. Yeah in the heat, those sort of beers are refreshing.
Ooh, I can now Click & Collect at my local Big W with eBay. Well this is handy since I work about 100 metres from Big W and am never home when Aus Post calls.
@mrtaco cheers for that eBay 20% off thingo, ended up getting a new Razer Death Adder Chroma for $60 free postage!
I’m still umming and ahhing over getting a graphics card 😛
DO EET!
which 20% thingo?
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/232735
Just bought my brother a life size darth maul cardboard cut out for his bday.
Why can’t everything be life size. I’m not even life size.
Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to have a life size wife, but I’m happy with my fun sized one.
EB games is having another sale. I noticed that Street Fighter 4 on 3DS was only 4 bucks.
That makes it almost worth it.
Hmmm…
Now I’m thinking of pre-purchasing XCOM 2 on Friday…
So psyched for XCOM 2.
XCOM 2 looks like it will be very, very good.
The reviews are tending to be: “So, they’ve solved 90% of my gripes with their first game. A few graphical glitches remain, camera perspectives can be a little wonky. But if XCOM was 85-90/100, XCOM2 has to be 90-95/100”. Considering I’m still replaying Enemy Within, that’s sounding like a pretty good endorsement.
Actually from reading the reviews I walked away with “Oh god this game is going to kill me and then beat me over the head with my own corpse”
I used to be a turtler in the last game which seems to be completely out of the question for 2 where you have time limits; dropped loot; and enemy reinforcements the longer you stay out in the field.
If you purchase it on Friday it won’t be a pre-purchase =P
True, but I can’t be stuffed changing what I wrote. 🙂
#Lazyguy1990
http://imgur.com/topRmlG I made a thing, again
I like the design.
Although personally, I think by adding extra complexity and detail to the design and increasing the number of colours, you’re starting to muddy the minimalist aesthetic that makes some of the others so striking.
Well, as there are two characters, there’s not really much I can do about it, unless I separate them. I don’t want to do that D=
I tend to have a rule. If the colour changes, I need to draw it. With the gradients, it’s less cut and dry. =(
I love, love, love it!
Woke up to the XCOM2 key in my email. I think I might be reminding my boss that they owe my a day off tomorrow. XCOM!
(@pupp3tmast3r)
Hoping the internets can average the 280kb/s required to have it all downloaded by tomorrow morning. I can usually get 500 from steam, but it was hovering at 220 when I left for work.
Have they started pre-loading on steam yet?
Yep
Nope. Hung around the 200kb/s all day. Couldn’t get tomorrow off work anyway, so that’s probably okay. Maybe there’s not very many mirrors available for pre-loading, and come 12am it’ll pick up.
@poita, just a heads up I’ve sent you an email if you haven’t seen it yet, sorry that I didn’t get back to you sooner. I found last night that my motherboard only accepts DDR4 RAM minimum so your RAM won’t even fit in the slots. I’m still definitely buying the GFX card off you though, just email me the details on where to send the dollerydoos.
Cool, I’ll get onto that tonight.
So, who wants to come to THIS with me on the Saturday night?
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/82751694/jan29th.jpg
I bought four tickets \o/
edit – tickets most likely now gone 🙂
I’d love to go to this but I have no idea how I’m actually going to get there with the least amount of hassle
Too far.
Also we were an Agro household 😛
That looks amazing. Really tempted, might have to see if I can get a night off
@trikeabout Did you see the CGs last night? The night before it was on like 60% tops for the first tier, then last night when I hopped on and checked out Ch’i Lin they’d cracked it. Nothing suss.
Saw some pictures of them from maybe two days ago, including the other two stations that have the same CG. Their ones were down at maybe 2-3%. Wonder how they look now.
I did see Ch’i Lin was still short when I was on, but these things usually end in a mad rush.
According to the CG thread here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=187372
Ch’i Lin is over the line and the other two aren’t.
https://community.elitedangerous.com/galnet/uid/56b0c6639657bafb6e00da32
Totally fudged it 😛
LOL “We’ve released lots of NPCs” 🙂 Or “We changed the tiers…”
So, last night, my python was winged with TWO corvettes…
We had an anaconda attack us… there was another behind coming in too. Turns out we had FIVE ‘condas. 4 were in a wing with an FDL. It got hairy for me and I had to run away. The ‘vettes were dented but victorious. I missed out on nearly a million in bounties.
Hardcore. I coulda taken ’em! 😛
Come to think of it I don’t think I’ve really tested out my DBS against any condas yet.
Wait were those NPCs or players?
NPCs. Even so, 4 attacking simultaneously is scary…
So new Archer, Neat.
Blah. Is anyone else getting “secure connection failed” when trying to access http://pccasegear.com in Firefox? I had this happen the other week, but it worked fine in Chrome. Firefox also won’t let me get around it, jerks.
I just had a browse around the site on Firefox and everything seemed to be working fine for me.
Weird. Might be the VPN I am using then :/
It’s because you should be shopping at Umart.
Well Umart IS 30 mins away from me & PCCG is like 2,000km away, so yep I should! I just like their site layout better for browsing stuff 😛 I wouldn’t really buy from them cause I personally would prefer to drive to either Umart or maybe MSY.
Page 3 on a Thursday 🙁 Where are all the TAYbies?!?!
Also in case I didn’t mention this before. XCOM 2!!
Separate note; any hearthstone players thoughts on the new standard mode? Should be good for the meta though probably not so good for my wallet….
Yeah, I might have to hold back my dad jokes this week in memory and hopes of a future #DadJokePage6. We must preserve and uphold the essential tradition and integrity, for love and country of #DadJokePage6!
To think when I first joined TAY page 6 would happen on a Tuesday or Wednesday 🙁
What’s wrong with kids these days!
I remember when we used to get up into the teens with page numbers.
Yes the glory days….. I guess we’ll never relive them =\
eh, there was a lot of filler posts. Also, most taybies weren’t on twitter then.
I blame Pez & his 300 different handles.
yuuuuup.
I’m still not on twitter because I’m old and I refuse to try anything new #oldmanhaggis #getoffmylawn
I’m not on twitter because social media.
I still consider myself as “not on twitter”, forgetting that it’s technically not true.
Been a busy week with little boy starting school and planning same little boy’s birthday party.
a) on Twitter.
b) Real life has intruded this week, I’m running an event on Tuesday and composing TAY stuff takes much longer than a tweet.
God damnit. I decided to stop playing HS a while back, and now I know there’s a new mode and oh god it’s already loading on my phone what have you done please send help
The new brawl is really fun; I keep going up against players using a reno lock and destroying them with a rogue xD
lol really? I saw the description and thought ‘how could any not be running rogue?’ Played one game, the druid I was up against played an ooze to destroy my arcanite reaper and I got a gladiator’s longbow, he instantly conceded.
Thank you, RNGesus!
Lol I love it when I proc into deadly poision, tinkers oil and have two blade flurry’s in my hand and destroying the weapon gives me a gorehowl blade flurry lethal. So much oom. So far I haven’t faced a signle rogue, 3 warlocks and one mage. What is wrong with people?!
Bungie asks fanbase: “Are you still having fun?” So tempted to respond with “Yep – Diablo is amazing!” 😛 I don’t think our team will even get one raid done this week – only three of us were online on Tuesday night.
Destiny is like a corpse the doctor thinks he’s brought back to life but just gives in and calls time of death.
Pity as there was so much going right for that game.
It had a 15 month run, that’s something.
I feel like it was more of a sprint at the start that petered off into a jog and then a walk =p
I think a lot of that time was people engaged in endless self-CPR, like those mountain hikers who are keeping their friend alive for days through CPR alone, waiting for rescue. The grind stopped being fun, but we did it anyway in the hope that actually achieving the reward would yield the satisfaction we hoped… only to discover: no, actually.
1400 hours, I think. I got my money’s worth.
I haven’t signed in since Fallout 4 launched, where’s my email?
I haven’t logged in since about 2 weeks after the expansion, where’s my email?
I’ve never owned it or even played it, where’s MY email?
What’s Destiny? Would I like it?
I haven’t touched Destiny since early October.
Yay, Lego tickets finally arrived. Next date set? 😛
Well, assuming I can get a hold of her at some point.
Tickets for Lego or tickets made of Lego?
BOTH.
Speaking of LEGO, I bought the Imperial Shuttle Tydirium set last week.
I opened it a couple of nights ago. Before I’d manage to remove all the bags from inside, Max (large old cat) was trying to get into it.
I may have to rethink this whole LEGO business until I can fix up the back room…
They appear to just be cardboard 🙁
Played my first ever serious competitive game last night – It was warhammer conquest at my FLGS.
I was playing an allied Eldar/Tau deck – Eldorath was my warlord.
Game 1 – Vs. Kith Dark Eldar – Loss
Not having played with my deck before I played all wrong. I spread my forces against several planets to try and get an economy going, lost planet one and two fairly quickly. Downside is that the first 2 planets both had 3 icons each… So once i lost those two there was no way of winning aside from taking out the warlord, but I drew poorly the entire time and had neither the cards nor the resources. Also, anything I put on the table he nullified with his DE trickery. He mopped the floor with me. He went on to win all 3 of his games.
Game 2 – Vs. Nids – Win
I actually won a game! And in an impressive manner.
To be fair i drew REALLY well. Took planet one and two, managing to draw 2 of my 3 warlock destructors, supported by black guardians. On the final planet I drew my third warlock destructor somehow, played a couple of extra abilities and that was it.
Game 3 – Vs Nids – loss
My previous oponant wasn’t using swarm tactics, this guy was.
I took the first and second planet relatively easy enough with my eldar and tau units, but my lack of area effect cards really screwed me. By planet 3 he had more gaunts on the board than i could ever deal with. He took 2 planets and I just had to comit everything i had to try and stop him, despite knowing it was completely futile. In the end game he committed his warlord and next think you know almost 20 units were in my face.
Damn.
Overall i had a great time, though.
8/10 – would lose horribly again.
In fact i will, in the next round in 2 weeks…
Finished re-learning one of my long-forgotten pieces! Got the whole thing down over just four days! Didn’t have time for anything on Monday so it doesn’t count 😛
I think it’s just about in a playable state too, only needs a tiny bit more polish. Gotta be some kind of a new record for me.
Super impressed by one of the guys in the departments, today.
Dude is basically the corporate IT version of Fallout’s Mysterious Stranger.
I’ve been running this project which has exploded into ‘definitely bit off more than we can chew’ territory, and struggling with some hurdles, and then this dude just calls up out of the blue.
He basically says, “I’ve heard you’re trying to do some of these things… I happen to know that this is going to result in some problems for you. I’ve got some time and I’d like to offer to help you resolve those before they become big problems.”
Uhm. Fucking yes. Thank you.
I know why you’re here, Neo. I know what you’ve been doing… why you hardly sleep, why you live alone, and why night after night, you sit by your computer. You’re looking for him. I know because I was once looking for the same thing. And when he found me, he told me I wasn’t really looking for him. I was looking for an answer. It’s the question that drives us, Neo. It’s the question that brought you here. You know the question, just as I did.
Did a little tune play when he appear? That’s how you’d know.
In my head, it did. (And then my coworker Nick said something hilarious about trying to catch him.)
…Nick Valentine?
In my head he is.
You had best start wearing a triggerman bowler hat around the office
TAY GIVEAWAY.
Tomb Raider (2013), Deus Ex and Counterstrike: Source sitting in my steam gifts pile. Who would like one or more of these?
Jumping on the bandwagon.
Still have Shadowrun triple pack (Returns, Dragonfall and Hong Kong) sitting in my Steam gifts pile, free to a good home.
I don’t have a good home, but I will take them if they’re still available. From the reports I’ve heard all the Shadowrun games are pretty good. Thanks in advance.
Done! Pretty sure I have you on Steam already. Will have to wait until I get home, unfortunately, which is pretty late today due to hockey after work, and being in Perth 😛
Thanks man. I’ll have to shout you a coffee or something when I’m in Perth next month.
Huh. Maybe I don’t have you on Steam? Let me know your Steam name and we’ll rectify that.
Well, I have a guy called The Cracks in my Steam friends list, I’m assuming it’s you, but just in case, my Steam name is carnhawks.
Ah, I do have you on there. Was a bit tired last night and must have missed it 😐
I think I’ve got a Broken Age to give away too!
Also, I have all of those already 😛
Woke up at 2:30am and bought XCOM 2 on Steam.
Now I just have to wait all day whilst it downloads… -_-
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee =D
MORNING TAY!
My poor ears… 😛
Got up this morning, XCOM 2 had finished downloading and also grab a 250MB patch, and it was ready to play. Yay!
Promptly got ready for work and left home for 8 hours.
I also got up this morning, let XCOM 2 download the patch. Had a shower. Got dressed. Started playing ‘Ride of the Valkyries’ in the lounge room to wake up a @blaghman sleeping on my couch and then left home to work for 8 hours.
I woke up, heard someone moving around, thought “I hope I don’t have to get up” and heard Ride of the Valkyries, and internally swore because that meant I had to get up.
…
Oh, and I started the XCOM 2 download yesterday, so I assume it’ll be done by the time I get home.
Apologies if it has been discussed elsewhere, but is anybody here going to the IGN black beta awards in Sydney tonight? If so, I’ll see you there!
Didn’t even know that was a thing! 😛
DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMM!!! Who else is excited? Looks like old school fun and since I’m old and it’s been a long time since I left school, I’m looking forward to it! 😀
I know a lot of people have been skeptical about it but it does look fun. That and there hasn’t been a decent quake like shooter in years.
My problem is that I’m old and not sure how I’ll handle the twitch based speed of that old school gameplay.
Watching the trailer it also seems liek they are pushing the gore for the sake of gore angle which kinda turns me off
Hey now, no need to play the gore card. We should be applauding all the members of id who sat down with Brutal Doom and said “Hey, why don’t we just make this instead?”.
I’m happy you’re excited.
I am anti-interested in Doom. Looks like exactly the type of game that I decided to stop playing.
Yeah, I’m sick of all the tricky stuff that FPS’s and things do these days. I wan’t to just shoot stuff for fun, not have to worry about abilities, perks, a cutscene every 5 minutes, tons of hud distractions, and hardly any enemies. I need DOOM in my life right now 😀 *fires up original*
I am so, so sick of faceshooting.
I’m kinda excited. Have many fond memories of playing Quake 3 on the school computers back in the day, but never really got into Doom beyond a short stint at a friend’s house. Doom looks like more of the same, but with a single-player focus.
It looks fun but I don’t know if it’s something I want to spend the usual AAA game 20-30 hours on. I’m assuming it won’t have an awesome plot and great writing to back up the oldschool gameplay the way Wolfenstein did.
Ah agreat. New payslip thing has been rolled out at work, it’s now 1000% more confusing to read my fucking pay, hooray for “improvements”
So, my internet is rubbish. Got to do some tests over the next couple of days and see if it’s internode or me, or if it’s just a case of connecting to some rubbish steam mirrors for XCOM2. Consistently getting 210kbps down from steam. XCOM is looking like it’s a 36 hour download. Might be done around 5pm this evening, after starting yesterday morning.
Xcom \o/
Everybody getting excited for x-com 2 and I haven’t even gotten around to playing enemy within yet
Ha!
I’ve played *checks* 2.2 hours of Enemy Unknown.
And I liked it… but… distractions… *stares into distance*
I’ve yet to finish Enemy Within myself, gotta get right on that!

I needed to authorise some transactions so I typed xcom into my browser to get into my commbiz account
I won’t be playing XCOM until they add the ability to marry off your squadmates and a little girl character who is actually a 1000 year old dragon.
Poor “whoever I paired up with Nowi.”
Enjoy feeling squicky for your entire life.
I think I paired her with Henry on my first playthrough.
I paired her with Ricken, which now that I think about it is actually weird for the opposite of the same reason. I do like how Nah questions who father about it though.
I feel like it’s less that she looks like she’s 12, and more that she acts like she’s 12.
Tiki is the superior girl-who-is-actually-a-dragon though by far.
I won’t be playing XCOM because I have The Witness and Bloodborne and oh god it’s really because I sucked and wasn’t super into the first one please don’t hate me
Bit the same really. Played it for a night and thought it was pretty good I guess. But never had any desire to load it up again.
I played through Enemy Unknown and loved it but felt no desire to play it through again until Enemy Within – same deal. I love playing it but it’s so stressful and such a time investment that starting a new game is intimidating.
I want Xcom 2 but I’m not in a huge hurry. Will probably wait until I have a better PC, too.
That’s fine, that’s fine, people are allowed not to like thi- INTO THE SEA!
But I played Bloodborne!
And I appreciate that, and you get positi- THROWN INTO THE SUN!

THE LAW OF THE INTERNET IS THAT WE MUST ALL LIKE THE SAME THINGS OR FORM UNDER BATTLE STANDARDS TO ENGAGE IN oh god it’s all so pointless I want to curl up into a ball and never Internet again…
You can’t quit now, there are still people on the internet that believe different things than you!
https://xkcd.com/386/
Holy shit, I literally had that in my head as I was typing my reply.
Great minds something something.
I recognised that comic based on it’s URL alone…
So Frozen Cortex is in the humble weekly bundle. Might be a way to get my superbowl on
Speaking of which, does anybody have superbowl plans?
At my old job we’d take the day off, drink American beer and have hotdogs and wings. This job I doubt they’ll do anything for it
Great so in addition to the stupid bullshit self-censorship practices, Nintendo’s decided no dual audio for Fire Emblem Fates without actually telling anyone until they sent out review copies this week.
Going to assume that means dub-only for SMT x Fire Emblem, which means I’m out. I may even not bother with Fire Emblem now.
(Yes, no dual audio is a dealbreaker for me, because it means only having a fucking horrible anime dub)
Fallout 4 question that I guess I could just lookup but guess I’ll just ask.
Should I just sell any of the books and stuff I come across? Or do you need to keep them in your inventory to get the bonuses. not much of an issue now I worked out how the sort the inventory in trnafer/trade screens
Pretty sure you can sell them once you’ve picked them up and got their bonuses. Which is worth it, early, because they sell for a fair bit.
(Unless you wanna keep some of the repeatable ones for duping… but who would dupe?!)
Try for yourself – you can always check your perks list on the status screen. Pick up a mag that gave like… +2% damage to mirelurks? Sell the mirelurk mag and you’ll still see it on your status page.
You’re free to sell them, probably better to build magazine racks and put them in your settlement, caps are so easy to get once you start doing purifier farms.
I built magazine racks, I find the fact I can actually use them so novel that I can’t resist.
Keep any library books, you can do something with them
eurrrgh. just logged on to check my bank balance & I see i’ve got a transfer from my ex paying an installment of a loan i made to her 6 months ago.
fuuuuuuck. totally forgot about it & i would’ve been completely happy to not remember.
fucking futile situation & i just wanna move on. now i’m gonna have these fortnightly reminders of all the bullshit.
anyway. hows things with you lot?
So I take it the breakup wasn’t pleasant? If not, take comfort in the knowledge that you’re draining her money away bit by bit 🙂
In all seriousness though, I had a friend who was in a similar situation – his bitch ex wanted to pay him back for something or other. Anyway, he stashed the money away, and used it to pay for a holiday for himself and his new girlfriend – apparently it was quite therapeutic for him to a good start to the relationship come out of such a shitty end to the last one.
ha! wasn’t fun, no.
she’s less a bitch, more self-centred.
but yeah. thats a good way of looking at it. use the cash to do something fun with someone.
hmm…. now i’ve just gotta find an interesting, fun, attractive, strange woman who digs beards, horrific jokes, live music, puppies & curling up on a couch watching anime & drinking wine.
:p
Horrific jokes? I’d like to get you and @haggis in the same room, and you two could tell bad jokes until reality collapses into some kind of superheavy awful dad joke black hole.
not ‘bad’ jokes. horrific. like joking about abortion while shopping for baby clothes.
i’m a terrible person.
You know what? I can’t wait for #DadJokePage6 this week (considering I leave work soon and don’t check kotaku over the weekend). My dadliness cannot contain itself. It must be unleashed. Someone help me!
You could – and this is only a suggestion mind you – but you could… post them outside page six?
guys. if you havent checked out the current humble bundle, have a look.
Splinter Cell Blacklist for $7.90. the rest is just gravy.

Uplay? Thanks but no thanks.
The weekly bundle looks ok as well. Looking at it for Frozen Cortex, LUX and curious about Chaos reborn
Chaos reborn is pretty ok. Very fast paced for a turn-based strategy game. Like, matches can be over in 2-3 turns. & its all about using summons right.
though in my time with it so far, it feels like they’ve c&p’d the RNG from the original pokemon games. (90% chance to succeed in something seems to fail 90% of the time)
I’m mostly curious due to the designer.
Played so much of the orignal xcom it isn’t funny. So figure I’ll give it a shot at some stage
I think I already have a cheap 360 copy of Blacklist I haven’t gotten to, but if I don’t might might as well grab it on PC.
7 hours left until I can play XCOM 2…
*Stares longingly at monitor*
6 hours and 58 minutes!
Went to the doctors because I think I’m shrinking, The doctor said they are really busy and need to be a little patient.

Some guy knocked on my door today and said, ” I have a parcel for your next door neighbor.”
I said, “You’ve got the wrong house then mate.”
My wife was so kind to me when I lost my coloring book. She gave me a shoulder to crayon.
I just saw two snails fighting brutally
I mean they were really slugging it out.
Teacher: “Johnny, I want you to explain the meaning of the word ‘burdensome’.
Johnny: “Well Miss, If you put 10 cats in a room with 5 birds and you close all the doors and windows, then come back 30 minutes later and there are no birds, but still 10 cats… You know there is a bird in some.”
How do you get Pikachu on a bus?

Several men are in the changing room of a golf club.
A mobile phone on a bench rings and a man engages the hands-free speaker function and begins to talk.
Everyone else in the room stops to listen.
MAN: “Hello”
WOMAN: “Hi Babe, it’s me. Are you at the club?”
MAN: “Yes.”
WOMAN: “I’m at the shops now and found this beautiful leather coat. It’s only $2,000; is it OK if I buy it?”
MAN: “Sure, go ahead if you like it that much.”
WOMAN: “I also stopped by the Mercedes Dealers and saw the latest models. I saw one I really liked.”
MAN: “How much?”
WOMAN: “$170,000.”
MAN: “OK, but for that price I want it with all the bells and whistles. Leather seats etc .”
WOMAN: “Great! Oh, and one more thing…
I was just talking to Margaret and found out that the house I wanted to buy last year is back on the market. They’re asking $1.9mill for it.”
MAN: “Well, then go ahead and make an offer of $1.5 mill
They’ll probably take it. If not, we can go the extra 4 hundred thousand if it’s what you really want.”
WOMAN: “OK. I’ll see you later! I love you so much!”
MAN: “Bye! I love you, too.”
The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are staring at him in astonishment, mouths wide open.
He turns and asks, “Anyone know who’s phone this is?”
There once was a man who loved tractors, I mean he absolutely LOVED them.
He had tractor models, tractor wallpaper, remote control miniature tractors and tractor board games.
The only thing that even came close to his love for tractors, was the love he felt for his wife. His high school sweetheart, who didn’t mind his infatuation with tractors one bit. She didn’t even mind the role play where she would dress as a tractor, he would dress as a farmer.
Sadly his wife was struck one day, a tractor fell off the back of a transport truck. She didn’t die until he was at her side in the hospital. Her dying words “don’t blame the tractor honey” and with that she headed to the big farm in the sky. Sadly, he did blame the tractor, he hated them now with all his mind, body, and soul. He went home and destroyed ALL his tractor related items, the toys and his wife’s tractor suit. He put it all in a pile and burned it in the yard. What ever didn’t burn enough to his liking was thrown into a woodchipper.
He then went inside, rarely leaving his home, for 8 years. Finally on the 8th anniversary of his darling wife’s death he decided it was time to get back out in the dating world, plus the cute cashier at the grocery store had been asking him out for a while now, he called her out to dinner.
The restaurant he choose ended up being quite nice, good food, good service, great decor. But there was one problem, it was EXTREMELY smoky. So smoky that his date, being an asthmatic, was having some trouble breathing. After noticing her displeasure, and trouble breathing, he started breathing in. I mean REALLY breathing in. Inhaling with such force that all the smoke quickly left the dining room, and went into his lungs. When the room was void of smoke he stepped outside and released it all into the night.
When he rejoined his date she asked “how on earth did you do that?” to which he replied, “I’m an extractor fan.”
*groans*
*stands up*
*applause*
I saw a girl at a costume party dressed as a frisbee. She seemed pretty desperate for attention cos she was just throwing herself at everybody!
Wait… you’re not Haggis!
So Paddy has been at the pub all day. The publican says. ” Hey Paddy, you’ve had enough to drink today. It’s time you went home”
Paddy mumbles under his breath some obscenities. Hops up from his bar stool and falls flat on his face. BANG face first on the floor, black eye.
So he looks at the pub door and on his hands and knees drags himself there. Paddy reaches up at the door handle with all his strength. The moment he turns the handle. The door flies open and again he is face first on the ground.
With one eye he focuses on his house across the road. Again on his elbows and knees, slowly drags himself across the street to his garden gate.
Paddy takes a few deep breaths, and wipes the blood off his knees and elbows as he searches for his house keys. Once again he reaches for the door handle. Drags himself to his feet and spends the next 10 minutes attempting to put the key in the lock.
Finally the key is in the lock and the moment he turns it, again BANG back on the floor with a blood nose. Paddy drags himself up the stairs to his bedroom leaving a trail of blood.
The next morning Paddys wife wakes him up and says ” Paddy, you must of had way too much to drink at the pub yesterday” With a dry mouth, in a grumpy tone he replies.” How would you know”
His wife says. ” The pub just called to say you left your wheelchair there last night”.
Sitting at the dinner table

That is perfect
Most people don’t know that back in 1912 Hellman’s mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after New York City.
Mexicans were crazy about the stuff.
The Mexican people were eagerly awaiting delivery and were disconsolate at the loss. So much so that they declared a national day of mourning which they still observe today.
It is known, of course, as … sinko de Mayo.
Well, fuck.
Apparently Dave Mirra died this morning.
🙁
RIP
Just saw that, apparent suicide, man that’s sad.
Friends! Today’s Friday the 5th. Got $5? Maybe you can do something nice with it.
I concur!
I would be motivated to donate (again) if there were stretch goals!
I mean, I’m gonna donate again anyway, but… stretch goals!
Yeah, when do we get upgraded components or multiplayer huh?
I’ll be getting my nose upgraded as part of the operation! Does that count? 😉haha ok. Not planning to crunch the numbers til tomorrow at least, but if I do add a stretch goal, I want to try and offer something in return, but not sure what I could do. I was thinking perhaps another song mentioning the names/nicks of people who’ve donated, but that could be slightly problematic when it comes to people like you (trying to pronounce that nick is hard enough, let alone rhyming it ;)), and I’d also be a bit weary about committing myself to something like that in case I get worse, or just don’t have the time etc. Not sure…. :SAlso, thanks @cookingmama! You’re totally awesome for this and many other reasons! 😀
Can’t wait for Kotaku’s article on the FE:Fates changes. At least one thing has been observed so far:
The face petting sequence is the same except for the removal of player interaction. NPC still comes to the meeting, still gets all stupid in the face, still makes annoying noises, and the player still gets affinity bonues. Only difference is the player doesn’t rub the NPC’s head.I imagine there’ll still be a bunch of shit from the same people who jumped the gun without any information.
Well we do know they cut dual audio. Game’s dub-only. Probably a Dealbreaker for me personally.
The rubbing thing was weird anyway. Looks like someone on the team discovered Live2D and had to include it for some reason.
I reckon they’ll have just straight up cut Soleil’s ‘problematic’ romance bit but who knows.
So it happened, Xcom 2 beat me, I reached a point of no return with 16/20 soldiers in recovery and I had completely screwed up my early game resource allocation.
Take two! :@
I got trounced on the second mission. :\
I’m almost at that point. Just spending all my resources on new recruits. =P
I swear this game is more difficult then the first.
I am on my 13th attempt, though it’s worth noting that most of those didn’t even make it out of the first mission before I restarted. No. 12 essentially ended after 2 full team wipes, and I had no units left, but I sat there until the end to see what happened.
13 is going well, for now. Very much just for now though.
Christ what difficulty are you playing on 0,0
I’m still powering through my second attempt thanks to much better resource management and building an AWC as soon as possible. Had some pretty close calls though and not even on the story missions but random guerilla ops =@
@sernobulus
Yeah it definitely is; mostly cause of the timers and the urgency that stupid avatar project creates. Which is funny because in the previous XCOM you had a similar time constraint but since it wasn’t communicated so directly you didn’t feel as much pressure. Also the enemies have a lot more health than in the first xcom, I’m probably halfway into the mid-game and almost all aliens take 2-3 hits to kill, even the grunts :@
Bathurst 12 Hour is on today, been holed up watching it for most of the morning, whilst playing American Truck Simulator, and waiting for Dragon Age Inquisition to download after I bought it last night.
Anyone thinking of buying ARK: Survival Evolved?
if you subscribe to Humble Bundle Monthly for $12, you’ll get the game, plust the next Bundle that comes up. Then you can cancel your subscription!
I did think about it! I saw @blackdahlianz play it on Saturday and the framerate and glitchiness of the game turned me off a little, I understand it’s in Beta but I would like to see it more stable before I bought the full version 😀
Thats pre-apha what you saw, got raided again early monday morning, I’m about ready to throw in the towel on this game.
