Tell Us Dammit: Best Video Game Soundtracks

Okay, I'm certain we've done this before, but let's do it again anyway.

Best video game soundtracks. What have you got?

I've got...

Secret Of Mana Everybody's Gone To The Rapture Donkey Kong Country Super Mario Galaxy Final Fantasy X

That's off the top of the dome. What are some of your favourites?

    Everybody's Gone To The Rapture

Can't believe I forgot The Last Of Us.

I'd like to nominate Rapture for most mind numbingly dull walking simulator ever as well.

You must have been playing a different game from the one I played. GOTY for me.

I hated everything about it tbh. I knew what kind of game it was going in, it's just that I dgaf about what was going on as it was so sloooooooow paced. I know there are a lot of other people out there who are split into these two camps as well out there. You either love it or detest it.

I think the walking speed was slightly too slow. I think they were forced to do it that way though to stop dialogue from overlapping. Maybe a better way would have been to slow the maximum speed whenever dialogue triggered. I know they did that in certain places such as house interiors (where you can't hold R2 to run).

Back on topic, I agree with Everybody's Gone To The Rapture and Journey. I'd also add the theme song in Sora No Kiseki as well as Lisa Miskovsky's seminal Still Alive. Xenoblade Chronicles has a very strong soundtrack overall as well.

    Rhythm Heaven
    de Blob
    de Blob 2
    HotD Overkill
    Mushroom Men

Dammit I went and forgot F-Zero X again.

Was playing overkill recently, the soundtrack is better than tarantinos grindhouse efforts.

Edit: Also Splatoon. God damn that's addictive music.

Metroid Prime Trilogy. Yes, all of it.

    Hotline Miami
    Far Cry Blood Dragon
    Metal Gear Solid 3

Hotline Miami! Yes how could I forget?!?! man that M|O|O|N track....

One of the only details Freya and I have worked out for our wedding is that we'll be leaving the venue to Apotheosis from the Journey soundtrack.

I'd say that puts Journey's soundtrack fairly up any lists of personal music choices, let alone one for video game soundtracks.

Fez + Environmental Station Alpha off the top of my dome.

    Remember Me
    Mass Effect 2
    Killer Instinct (Xbone)

Wonder boy 3 the dragons trap, I find it easy to hum my way through most areas

    The Original Tomb Raider
    Halo: Combat Evolved
    Super Mario Bros.

    Anything else and you're wrong.

Also the Scott Pilgrim game had a rad soundtrack by Anamanaguchi.
The Max Payne 3 soundtrack was pretty damn good also.
      Anything by Jeremy Soule.
      GTA: Vice City.

I guess you could count The Kid's neckerchief as a scarf, so Bastion is almost as good as Journey. Except it isn't Journey. So you're wrong.

Nah but fo real, probs Halo or Halo 2 for i miss Marty O'Donnell...

    Chrono Trigger
    Final Fantasy IX
Pick any MGS, they all have great sound tracks
LoZ A Link to the past
    DKC series
    Banjo Kazooie
A few of the Mario Karts
    F-Zero series

    Monkey Island 2
    Curse of Monkey Island
    Grim Fandango
    Day of the Tentacle

    Chrono Trigger
    Life is Strange
... those are the 3 that immediately spring to mind.

Those first two were straight up for me, too. Haven't played LiS yet.

My third would be the Halo series.

The Soundtrack in LiS is as much a character as the rest of the cast. Half the reason I bought the boxed copy was so I could get the "official" soundtrack as well.

I think Transistor is the only soundtrack I have listened to outside of playing the game.

I came in just to sing Transistors praises.
Big fan of the FFX soundtrack as well

It's kind of hilarious/sad, but many games back in the olden times came on CDs and their music was CD audio tracks, from track 2 onwards. (Track 1 was the game data.)

I swear so many game CDs spent more time in my discman or my stereo than they did in my PC. HoMM2-3, Descent 3, Quake 1-2, pod...

not so much a soundtrack but the score to minecraft enhances the experience of the game a lot I think. really poignant and lonely

Ah, if we're talking about general sound design, then I'd say Half Life or HL2 - the sound design in those games was pretty much flawless

Solo adventure mode, if you're feeling a little nihilistic and that mournful, lonely tune starts playing... you wonder what the point of it all is and you just build a bed in a dirt cave and sleep forever.

    Tony Hawks 1 and 2.

Took a lot of scrolling to find someone who mentioned Tony Hawk pro skater :D so good

    - Xenoblade (wii)
    - Persona 3/4
    - Any game containing a little boy in a green hat and tunic, saving a princess from a pig/demon guy

    Rebel Galaxy

Oh god yes, I grabbed the spotify soundtrack playlist as soon as I heard the trailer for that game.

Heroes of might and magic games always have good music, obviously Halo

Edit: Doom, Doom legacy, Doom 2

Jet Set Radio Futures!! Can't believe it's been overlooked thus far.
All of the Halo score by Marty O'Donell, but then I'm a sucker for score in general.

Xenogears. Composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. Best soundtrack ever made.

    Persona 4
    Shovel Knight
    Phantasy Star 2
    Phantasy Star Online
    Chrono Trigger
    Castlevania Symphony of the Night
    Dragon Age Origins
    Mischief Makers
    Turtles in Time
    Sonic 3 & Knuckles
    Final Fantasy VII
    Super Metroid
    Outrun 2
    Shin Megami Tensei 1,2&4
    Silent Hill
    Yoshi's Island
    Streets of Rage 2
    Tekken 2
    Valkyrie Profile
    Bust-A-Move 2

Oh, hell yes. How could I forget the Katamaris!

You have a list that long and no Total Annihilation on it?

Dood, wasn't on consoles (was it?).

Also, I could of gone on & on, tried my best to condense it.

+1 for Shovel Knight (very catchy 8-bit tunes) and Tekken 2 (probably the best fighting game music ever with SoulBlade being a close second

I listen to a lot of game/anime/movie soundtracks - so it's hard to make a short list as such, but these guys get me through the day.

FF IX, XII, XIII, X (OST and Piano Scores)
    Bioshock 1/Infinite
Zelda Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time
    Fallout New Vegas
    Hotline Miami
