The last we heard the Zelda Wii U was delayed, which is something Nintendo always does. Wondering how things are going? In the most recent issue of Famitsu, series producer Eiji Aonuma was asked just that. “Busy,” he replied.
Continuing, he said, “When we did Skyward Sword for the Wii, at the end stages of development, I was in charge of the characters’ dialogue and the in-game text. And, now as well, it’s like it was then. I had to work on text today, too,” he said with a laugh.
“But, the game has really taken shape, and things have gotten easier. That means things are progressing well.”
According to Aonuma, the keyword this time is “something new”. Ocarina of Time was a huge leap for the Zelda series and since then Aonuma explained, “I think the base of our secret sauce has always been Ocarina of Time. But this time, the change in flavour will be like going from Japanese food to Western style food. Perhaps, players will be surprised.”
“Please look forward to it, because I think we’ll be able to make ‘something new’ like Ocarina of Time was,” Aonuma added.
Previously, Kotaku reported that the new Zelda will be open-world and might not have the puzzles players have come to expect.

Awwww yeah.
If they do to zelda what monolith did to xenoblade with XCX, then by all means add some Western food!
Also, Japanese cheeseburgers are surprisingly amazing. They go a bit far in regards to adding cheese to things, but they naill the basics.
Zelda, with the good bits of a Bethesda game, without the bad bits of a Bethesda game.
Going to Japan next week….. Tell me more of these cheeseburgers! Where is the best place?
As with ramen, just join a queue, you can’t go wrong! I can’t remember any names, we just stopped randomly.
The Japanese culture of mindful pride in their craft extends to fast food. Every bit of American food I’ve had there was better than anything from America, by a wide margin.
But you’ll see what I mean about the cheese overload. It’s like the fashion here of putting avocado or pesto on everything, except they haven’t worked out when to say no.
Interesting times.
I’m going at the beginning of April. My wife is so very picky with food but i want to try everything! It’s going to be difficult!
I’m so torn between buying it for my Wii U, or waiting until it comes at launch with the NX. I don’t want to play the inferior version but at the same time I don’t like buying consoles at launch…
Get it on the WiiU for sure. I played twilight princess on the Game cube and it was marvellous!! The WiiU will be able to handle the new Zelda just fine.
There is NOTHING to indicate the NX will be released anytime soon – nor anything to suggest Zelda U will be on the NX console. The internet is full of rumours. Don’t be surprised if the NX isn’t released this side of 2018.
I wonder why Nintendo even mentioned the NX at all if this is the case. I’m sure there a lot of people in this boat (I know I am) of holding off on buying anything Nintendo related until we know more about the NX release.
They merely mentioned their next console, codenamed “NX” is in development, and that more details will be shared with us at E3 2016. Nothing more. Anything else you’ve read is speculation/rumour. It’s not surprise their next console is in development – Sony and MS would be working on theirs, too.
Given that the future WiiU lineup includes Zelda (if it ever comes out), Starfox and…………?
Anyone who’s ever seen a console die knows the writing is on the wall for the WiiU and has been for a year or more. It’s going to be a pretty boring couple of years if the fairly substantial NX rumours are completely untrue.
If the NX isn’t out by March 2017 I’ll be extremely surprised.
Paper Mario was just mentioned in a direct the other day… so we know star fox, zelda and paper mario are on the way… We are also only a couple of months away from E3 where no doubt a half dozen or so new titles will be announced. Not sure how this is different to any other year?
Have they officially said it’s going to be a dual release like Twilight Princess was though? Given what Wind Waker looks like on the WiiU, I have no doubt this game can and will look fantastic on the WiiU. But, I will be buying the NX when it comes out and if it does get released on both, I would most likely get the NX one anyway.
Just so long as it actually comes to Wii-U. If it doesn’t come out until next gen I’ll be pissed.
I hope it skips the WiiU to be honest, I’ve seen this game’s trailer running on a television and it doesn’t look the best.
I can’t imagine how hard it’s been for Nintendo to build and “open world” game running on hardware roughly on par with that used for Skyrim, on an engine that hasn’t had several iterations (like the slow transition from Oblivion to Skyrim), that comes out over five years later than Skyrim and more than a year and a half after the world has been playing the spectacular Witcher 3 on current-gen hardware….
And they have the entire gaming world expecting that it will be an amazing title that looks great and runs smoothly. No wonder they delayed it and have barely shown it…. they must be shitting their pants at the situation.
I think they’ve dug themselves a massive hole. Their next gen system is strongly rumoured for later this year and this game may or may not be approaching the final stages.
They need a killer app for the next machine but they also need to minimise the burn for Nintendo fans who’ve gotten an adaptation of a 3DS Mario game, no Metroid and no Zelda on the WiiU. They also don’t want to launch a new system with a meh-looking cross generation title that leaves Zelda fans waiting another 5 years for a dedicated new-gen Zelda.
It’s a less-than-ideal situation that’s for sure. They probably should have scrapped the WiiU version a year ago and started focussing on having a fantastic launch title to give people a reason to buy the new system, stumbling out of the gate went a long way towards the failure of the WiiU.
I guess from my point of view, unless the NX actually brings Nintendo on par, I wont be buying it until a few price drops later. I just cant’ justify full price on a first party single player only console, because that’s all I’ll use it for. In fact, even if it’s on par, I still wouldn’t touch it until a few price drops. Nintendo just don’t have their shit together enough for me to pay full price anymore. They don’t understand online, stores, online purchasing, any of it.
Add to that the fact that if they announce the NX and then release a shitty version of Zelda on Wii-U, I probably wouldn’t buy that either.
Hopefully they will make it a bit more Elder Scrollsy while still retaining the essence of Zelda games.
As much as I have a ton of anticipation for this game, I gotta be honest – I’m a little worried. I really hope they don’t just turn Zelda into the kind of game that we’ve been getting from Bethesda for a decade. Don’t get me wrong, those games are amazing, but… There’s just something special about Zelda, even without the nostalgia. I don’t want it to become just another western RPG clone :/
For me, I don’t care when it comes out or anything, just as long as it’s on the Wii U. As much as I’d prefer a Zelda game with a darker tone (like Twilight Princess), I have no doubts that whatever they do it’s still going to be good.
