Justin Wong had a rough Sunday night at the NorCal Regionals. The fighting game legend endured a finals defeat in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 before coming within a round of the Street Fighter V final… only to be reverse-swept by Hajime "Tokido" Taniguchi. Wong lost the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 final to Christopher "NYChrisG" Gonzalez 3-2, and immediately went on to compete in the Street Fighter V tournament, where he'd already survived a long run through the lower bracket. Wong always seemed to be a long-shot at a tournament where Tokido and Lee "Inflitration" Seon Woo looked like the players to beat, but he proved deadly among the losers as he continued clamber back towards another final.
After crushing Martin "Marn" Phan, who was in the midst of his own shockingly successful tournament run to fourth-place, Wong took the fight to Tokido in the loser's final. Wong got off to a fantastic start, taking two quick rounds and jumping out to an early lead in the third. He was just a single successful super attack from getting the decisive KO on Tokido when he whiffed, and exposed himself to a counter that cost him the match… and eventually the series.
Seriously, this almost hurt to watch but once it started to go against Wong, I was powerless to look away.
Tokido seemed to figure-out Wong's Karin (with help from another player, Kenryo "Mago" Hayashi), and adapted accordingly. Wong collapsed before Tokido's Ryu, giving Tokido a reverse sweep and a finals rematch with Infiltration.
After the tense comeback from Tokido against Wong, the final itself was somewhat anticlimactic. Inflitration outclassed Tokido from beginning-to-end, taking an easy finals victory to become the NorCal Regionals Street Fighter V champion.
