The most intriguing Star Wars books coming out have been the ones that flesh out the extensive gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath was one of them, and now its sequel is going to tell us what Han and Chewbacca were up to after the destruction of the Death Star II.
Aftermath briefly teased Han and Chewie’s exploits in one of its side chapters — in the wake of the Empire’s defeat over Endor, the smuggler wanted to fulfil his life debt to Chewbacca by helping the Wookiee liberate his still-occupied home planet of Kashyyk. In a new excerpt, debuted by Entertainment Weekly today, Life Debt reveals that on the way to the Wookiee homeworld, not everything goes according to plan:
The galaxy is changing, and with peace now a possibility, some dare to imagine new beginnings and new destinies. For Han Solo, that means settling his last outstanding debt, by helping Chewbacca liberate the Wookiee’s home world of Kashyyyk.
Meanwhile, Norra Wexley and her band of rebels pursue Admiral Rae Sloane and the remaining Imperial leadership across the galaxy. Sloane, increasingly wary of the mysterious fleet admiral, desperately searches for a means to save the crumbling Empire from oblivion. Even as Imperial forces fight to regain lost ground, Princess Leia and the New Republic seek to broker a lasting peace.
But the rebel’s hunt for Admiral Sloane is cut short after the disappearance of Han Solo and Chewbacca. Desperate to save them, Leia conscripts Norra, Sinjir, Jas, and the rest of their team to find the missing smugglers and help them in their fight for freedom.
Uh-oh. Poor Han and Chewie! The heroes of Aftermath — the first in a trilogy of novels — are recruited by Leia to go find Han and Chewbacca, and help them liberate Kashyyyk once and for all. Which means yes, Temmin Wexley — AKA Snap Wexley, AKA “Greg Grunberg’s chubby X-Wing Pilot in The Force Awakens” — got to help Han Solo and Chewbacca free Kashyyyk. You do you, Greg Grunberg. But this is pretty cool, as we loved the cast of Aftermath — they’re some of the unsung heroes of Disney’s fledgling expanded universe.
EW also has an extensive excerpt that covers Norra’s first meeting with Han and Chewie, in which Han makes a suitably awesome entrance:
But then something lands in the grass in front of them — the thing rolls a few times like a flung rock. It beeps three times in succession. Then:
An implosive sound — foomp. The air lights up around them, a hard pulse of bright light. It concusses the air, too, hitting her like a thunderclap. Norra is suddenly blind and deaf, her ears ringing, her vision washed away in a tide of searing white. She fumbles for the blaster at her side — she whips it out, and it’s suddenly rocked out of her hand, clattering away.
A shape emerges in front of her as the white light begins to recede: a person-shape. Norra thinks: Aram has us. We thought we were watching him, but he was watching us.
She leans forward, starts to stand.
“Don’t move,” comes a voice. Quiet, but urgent.
Norra asks as her eyes adjust, “Who is that? Who’s there?”
The figure steps forward. She spies two blasters held aloft, one in each hand, and one pointed right at her. “Name’s Han Solo. Captain of the Millennium Falcon. Who the hell are you?”
Man oh man, this is good stuff.

Sounds pretty cool, but, ugh, the writting style on that excerpt is horrible :\
They don’t want the awesome Star Wars novelists in Tim Zahn, Mike Stackpole or Kevin J Anderson, they don’t want Star Wars.
My understanding is Han continued to build a crippling debt.

It honestly reads like something my grade 9 English students would write…
I was going to purchase some of the new Star Wars novels, but the reviews for them in the Kindle store are pretty abysmal. The general consensus seems that they’re just not quality stories.
I re-watched Force Awakens and found myself connecting with it and enjoying it a lot more this time around; I think the first time my enjoyment of it was marred by the incredulity of it destroying the EU and then Abrams piecing together A New Hope + the bones (so many bones) of the EU to put together his movie.
But I swear to God if Han and Chewie are flying around the galaxy partly due to mourning the “loss” of their son and this is the cause of Han & Leia’s disconnect I’m totally done.
Nah, Han shot off first.
