Hypothetical situation. You’re about to be sent to a deserted island, where you’ll be stranded, cut off from all human contact for the rest of your life. What eight games do you bring?
That’s the premise for the Final Games podcast, a show by freelancer Liam Edwards that brings on various guests from throughout the world of video games and asks them to talk about the games that mean the most to them.
Edwards was kind enough to invite me on the show last week. You can listen to my episode right here:
For reference — or in case you don’t have time to listen to the whole thing — here’s my full list. I tried to put together a mix of games that mean the most to me and games that I won’t mind replaying over and over again:
- Suikoden II
- Final Fantasy VI
- The Last of Us
- Baldur’s Gate II
- Zelda: Link’s Awakening
- Final Fantasy Tactics
- Sid Meier’s Colonization
- Starcraft II
What do you think? What would your list look like? Chime in!

Edit… OK, OK, I’ll swap out Overwatch for something else.
Solitaire, Especially if i want to get off the island as 9/10 someone will appear out of nowhere and tell me i should have moved that last card to this other spot.
Or correct your grammar… Should HAVE. 🙂
That too. 2 things in life are guaranteed a person saying where a solitaire card goes and a grammar nazi :P.

2. World of Warcraft
3. World of Warcraft
4. World of Warcraft
5. World of Warcraft
6. World of Warcraft
7. World of Warcraft
8. World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft is a terrible game for being stranded on an island with no outside contact.
Any game made by blizzard in the last 10 years is pretty much useless without internet.
If we are assuming access to power, it’s only fair to assume an internet connection too
So the phrase cut off from all human contact makes you think “Yeah, they probably mean id have the internet and be able to play an MMO with other people”
There are plenty of ways you can have power and be completely isolated including portable camping solar panels with batteries.
Resident Evil 2
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Final Fantasy VIII
Donkey Kong Country 2 Diddy’s Kong Quest
Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast

Dawn of War Gold Edition
Spellforce collection (Spellforce 1&2 with xpacs)
Besides the gaming, there’s lots of potential to keep busy with modding.
I feel like singleplayer only is the only way this list makes sense, otherwise you’re not isolated at all.
1. Mass Effect (Over 100 hours in it so far, still having fun)
2. Half-Life (Same as above)
3. Team Fortress 2 (jump maps etc. are still fun by yourself, if multiplayer were allowed it would top the list)

5. Fire Emblem Awakening (Bloody hell there’s so much content to these games even ignoring the gindy aspects)
6. Gunpoint
7. Metal Gear solid 3

I got carried away
Wooooo! Yay for Link’s Awakening! All-time best Zelda game.
If I’m on an island and these are the only games I get then I’m going for games I can sink untold hours into, not necessarily my favourite games.
– Arkham Asylum
– Tekken 5
– Chili Con Carnage
– Momono Sweeper
– Time Crisis 2
– Burnout Paradise
– Worms
– And maybe I’d finally have the time and inclination to finally work out what Dwarf Fortress is
I’d only bring a deck of cards and play Solitaire.
Because sure as mustard, I’ll be 15 minutes in before I get a tap on the shoulder with someone saying “You missed a move.”
