July was a whirlwind for new games. From a mobile phenomenon to indie releases, here are our favourite games from July.
Pokemon GO
The world lost its collective cool over Pokemon GO this month. Our first moments with the game taught us new things about the world around us, when we found pocket monsters in new and unexpected places.
It helped us get out more (even when we couldn’t hatch eggs), as well as think about the game’s implications for people who move through the world differently. Players waged war over the White House, found dead bodies, trolled each other and institutions and even sent nudes. We loved its team leaders, too. Check out our tips if you’re still looking to be the very best, like no one ever was.
You can get the game for iOS and Android phones.
I Am Setsuna
Despite the fact that this RPG lets you not name your character Setsuna, we loved this beautiful, well-paced game.
You can get the game for PC and PS4.
Arma 3 Apex
Apex, the new expansion for Arma 3, gave players a fancy new set of toys to play with, as well as a new co-op campaign.
You can get the game for PC.
Videoball
A new sports game by former Kotaku contributor Tim Rogers, we had a great time with this mash-up of Asteroids and Pong.

Song of the Deep
This charming, Metroid-influenced underwater adventure game by Insomniac is perfect for staying inside.

Rimworld
This sci-fi colony sim combines dashes of Dwarf Fortress, Firefly and The Sims to run characters through a meat-grinder of harsh conditions. You can check out our tips for getting started.

Lovely Planet Arcade
This deceptively charming speedrunning shooter hides a secret, hardcore heart.

Kentucky Route Zero Act IV
The long-awaited new instalment of this episodic point and click adventure game returns to the roots of what’s made this surreal series great.

Headlander
We had a ton of fun with Double Fine’s retro sci-fi Metroidvania about swapping heads to get through doors.

Ghost of a Tale
This Early Access stealth action RPG is Redwall in video game form, and it plays as good as it looks.

Riptide GP: Renegade
The newest instalment in this jet-ski racing series adds character and style to the genre.

Anarcute
This game about controlling an ever-growing gang of rioters is a mashup of Katamari Damacy and Jet Set Radio.

This mobile racing game improves upon its predecessor by giving players more control over prettier cars.

I’m rather addicted to Rimworld at the moment, despite being incredibly terrible at it.
Monster hunter generations is pretty rad, too.
My favourites are Odin Sphere: Lefthraisir and Furi. I am Setsuna came close but while I enjoyed it overall, the moment to moment enjoyment was lacking. If that even makes sense.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions! Most awesome embarrassing fun i have had in a long time!
I’ve never played a persona or shin megami tensei game, but i really want to give mirage sessions a go. The premise is nuts like the best “out there” anime.
I’m currently watching food wars. I don’t know why, but i can’t help myself.
I was the same. Never played either but thought it would be something i liked. Tokyo Mirage Sessions is definitely worth it for me!
Any news on I Am Setsuna physical copy? I can’t find anything on it.
The game I started playing this July was… Pokemon Soul Silver 😛
