It’s a tradition as old as… well, probably a few years, anyway. A game’s beta drops, and PC players crack it open in hopes of suckling out sweet morsels of information. Respawn’s seen it happen, and they have decided it’s just not worth the risk with Titanfall 2.
Betas, while limited in content and scope, invariably contain more game code than what’s directly accessible to players. PC game datamining is all the rage these days, and leaks are inevitable. That’s one of two reasons why Respawn’s elected to skip PC for Titanfall 2’s rock ’em, sock ’em beta bash. In a news post, they explained:
Because the single player story has some wonderful secrets that we really want to preserve for launch, we also have to worry about leaks. Our wonderfully curious PC players have proven in the past that they will dig out anything they can, and there’s a risk that they could spoil some of our single player.
The first Titanfall’s story was a few presses of the backspace key from being non-existent, so it’s a little weird to see things like single-player and story take precedence over a multiplayer beta on a video game platform substantially larger than any console. But hey, maybe single-player will be really good. Here’s hoping!
The other big issue is that Respawn doesn’t feel like the PC version is where it needs to be in terms of optimisation yet. They were refreshingly frank in admitting that Titanfall 2 still needs work when it comes to supporting wide varieties of hardware configures, especially where low spec options are concerned. The question, though, is whether or not it will be buttery smooth in time for the game’s release. The original Titanfall ran decently enough on PC at launch, but there were a handful of server issues, and matchmaking was a heap of smouldering mecha butts.
Titanfall 2 comes out on October 28, and its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One beta will likely kick off within the next week or so. The game looks pretty snazzy, though. Here’s hoping it will keep me hooked longer than a few weeks this time.

Everyone knows that PC versions of multi-platform games ‘just plain work’ better than the console versions, so it’s not like it needs any beta testing, anyway.

Hey look! Kotaku’s gotten so big it’s started attracting Batman Arkham Knight devs as commentators!
Sarcasm aside, I’m cautiously optimistic for this game. I know TF was a bit bare bones, and it didn’t hold my interest for more than 2 months.. But good god did I play the shit out of it for those 2 months, unlike COD Ghosts and BF4 which were just all around fucking meh.
The article two steps below this one is ‘No Man’s Sky Data-Miners Discover Some Weird Stuff’, so it’s not like they’re wrong about PC.
Well thats gonna end well. I hope they do some open beta testing so people can test their rigs.
Damn. I was hoping to get some sweet Robot Jox action soon. Now what’s going to keep me satisfied until launch?
