The X-Men's Iceman Is Getting His First Ongoing Comic Series

Bobby Drake's stepping up to the big leagues. After years of being a major team player across the X-Men books, Iceman will get a comic book of his own next year. Iceman's had a few miniseries to his name, but the new self-titled series marks his first regular series since the character's debut in 1963. Marvel didn't announce a creative team for the series or any story details -- presumably this will star the adult Bobby, not the teen Bobby currently running around in All-New X-Men -- only that it will arrive in autumn 2017, as part of the Ressurxion banner that the new mutant-related books will share in the wake of X-Men vs Inhumans. Sidenote: Having to type the word "Ressurxion" physically pains me.

Like the recently announced America Chavez ongoing, Iceman marks an important announcement for Marvel in terms of its LGBT representation, currently a lacking area in the company's overall push for wider diversity in its comics. As long as we can push the controversial nature of Bobby's outing last year aside, it's another positive step for LGBT representation in Marvel's expansive roster.

Not long after his coming out....Yay? Now it'll be based on the completely ridiculous plot twist rather than Bobby drake himself. I wish they'd done this when he started to fully realise his powers, making other doppelgangers of himself etc. As a long time x fan his coming out was a slap to the face. I have no problem with gay ppl of course, it just made Zero sense.

careful.. logic based arguments against scripting changes to established characters sexuality could attract a wild SJW commenter!

It doesn't matter anymore. We must know how hard it is to be a gay mutant. That's what sells these days... oh wait, it doesn't sell.

I've been an Iceman fan for years, but since his forced "outing" things have changed that it's no longer about him or his powers, it's all about his sexual preference.

This is pretty much what I expect as result of the upcoming Inhumans vs X-men. Marvel is finally going to stop skirting around the fact that they're not willing to support the X-Men brand any longer and give them an emotional but definitive end at the hands of the Inhumans. Once that's over, and the X-Men are done for, they can start exploring some of the most interesting (and surviving) characters such as Bobby here (I'm personally also hoping for Rogue) going solo or maybe incorporating them into one of the more eclectic Marvel teams (such as the already known addition of young Cyclops to the new Champions team).

I tend to enjoy Marvel's solo stories more than the group stories. Iceman has always been a fun character. As long as they have reasonably capable writers, and an absence of Greg Land, this ought be to interesting.
