Built for speed and not exploration, racing games like Mario Kart like to keep players confined to a set track. Since developers always know what the player will be looking at, it’s easier to hide things away, until a YouTuber like Shesez starts using camera tricks to explore beyond track borders.
In the latest instalment of Boundary Break, Shesez explores the off-camera world of Mario Kart, where the trees are much taller than they seem, the unseen water is coloured purple and the backsides of buildings are left bare. It’s an interesting look at the shortcuts developers take when they don’t expect players to go nosing around everywhere.
