Actress Carrie Fisher, who charmed the world playing Princess Leia Organa in the Star Wars films, has died following a massive heart attack. She was 60.

In a statement to People Magazine, Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd confirmed the news: “It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning. She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”

The iconic Star Wars actress had been in critical care as of Friday night, when she was removed from a plane by paramedics after going into cardiac arrest.

Outside of her role as Princess Leia, Fisher had a vibrant career as an actress and author. She even popped up in a few video games, including several Star Wars titles and the 2012 stealth hit Dishonored.

  • As much as 2016 has been a horrible year (in the media and personally as I lost two grandmothers) I do wonder if it isn’t the new state of affairs. The 70’s was the real birth of the blockbuster (and therefore more and more people becoming “megastars”) and honestly… we’re hitting the age when they will depart more and more.

God I hope I’m wrong. But regardless… RIP Carrie Fisher. 🙁

    • Was about to say the same thing. It’s no cooincidence that all the hard living of 70’s/80’s is starting to catch up with people. I have friends who went way too hard in the 90’s who are suffering health issues now as a result and they’re only in their late 30’s.

Very sad news 🙁 Vale Carrie Fisher.

  • Fucking hell 2016, how much more do you want to do to us?! What the fuck is your problem?! Less than a week left and you take George Michael and Carrie Fisher in quick succession! God, and they were still making Star Wars movies with Princess Leia in them too…

I think this may be the worst year I’ve ever lived through, or at least the worst one I’ve ever had enough awareness of the world to realise how shitty it is. There may have been some when I was a little boy, when the Cold War was still going on, but this is the year that just made me give up on the world. I think we should go with that idea The Goodies had once and all agree to just blow up the entire planet at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. Save us all further trouble.

    • Pretty much with you there on 2016 being the worst year based on my increased awareness of events, but not because it actually was. There most definitely have been worse years throughout history, be they years heavily effected by atrocious wars, deadly plagues, etc. But this will be the first year for many that makes them understand the concept of getting more cynical with age.

  • R.I.P Carrie Fisher, you will be remembered as more than Leia Organa for me and many others, you are hope and inspiration that drug abuse can be overcome, and that mental health can be persevered. The world has lost an icon.

  • Sad all those prayers and shares on social media couldn’t reverse the effect years of drug abuse has on the body.
