Harry Potter and the gang have come together to celebrate Dumbledore’s pride in the series’ official comic book debut, and author J.K. Rowling herself has given the inclusion her stamp of approval.
Love Is Love, the benefit comic to help victims of the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting, features LGBT characters and allies from various comics and series. One of the most powerful contributions is a single illustrated panel of Harry, Hermoine, and Ron, raising their wands up to create a pride rainbow in solidarity with their headmaster, Dumbledore, who is canonically gay.

This might actually be the first time we’ve seen Dumbledore openly confirm his sexual orientation on the page or screen. Rowling revealed in 2007 that Dumbledore is gay, and his relationship with Grindelwald may be explored in the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them series. However, we haven’t really seen Dumbledore discuss or display his queer status before. It’s been more informed and implied. So it’s really cool to see Dumbledore sharing his pride with his students and community. Apparently, Rowling thought so too.
The author allowed the comic book to use a quote from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, serving as a caption to the illustration from Jim Lee, a co-publisher of DC Comics. It reads: “Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open.” A beautiful quote from a beautiful character. Love Is Love comes out December 28. It retails for $US10 ($14), with all proceeds going to Equality Florida‘s fund for victims and survivors of the Orlando shooting.

Oh, JK Approved of this. So does that mean Hermione is white again?
