Valérian Comic Is Getting A Full Reprint Ahead Of Movie

One of Europe’s most-beloved scifi comic books will soon hit theatres as the heavily anticipated Luc Besson space opera, Valérian and the City of a Thousand Planets. To get audiences ready, Cinebook has announced they’re releasing a complete translated collection of the decades-long Valérian comic that inspired it.

Valérian may be one of Europe’s most beloved comic book series, running for 50 years and 21 volumes before finishing publication in 2010, but it’s never been a hit in the U.S. That could change with Besson’s film, which released its first trailer earlier this year and looks beautifully insane.

The first volume of Cinebook’s collection will feature books 1 and 2 of the series: The City of Shifting Waters and The Empire of a Thousand Planets. It doesn’t have the sixth book that the movie appears to be based on, Ambassador of the Shadows, but that’s expected to be released in a future volume. In addition to having extra pages and panels, the first volume will also include book 0, Bad Dreams, translated into English for the first time. It tells the story of the first adventures of Valérian and Laureline, our two main heroes.

The collection will include an interview with Besson about his upcoming big-screen adaptation, as well as behind-the-scenes art, sketches, and photographs. It will be available to ship from Amazon in June, one month before Valérian and the City of a Thousand Planets is released on July 21.
