Modders Are Adding The Entirety Of Liberty City Into GTA V

OpenIV was used to start cracking open Grand Theft Auto V back in 2015, and now the Russian developers behind the modding tool have set their sites on bringing GTA IV‘s Liberty City into the series’ latest entry.

The group made the announcement yesterday, stating, “The Liberty City will not replace Los Santos or Blaine County, but appears across the sea. Using the power of OpenIV and openFormats, we was able to bring Liberty City right into GTA V map.”

Liberty City is one of the largest and most densely packed GTA maps, and adding it to the game will be no small task. When asked why they’re doing it, the OpenIV team responded simply, “Because, why not?”

There aren’t currently any screenshots available for the project and no set deadline, but the developers hope to have the mode available “as soon as possible”. It will also require a copy of GTA IV in addition to GTA V to work because the mod will work by converting the city from the previous game’s file and copying it over the latest’s. The converter tool along with some additional assets will create a “single player DLC pack which will then install itself in GTA V“.

The group explained their project further in a brief FAQ section:

Q: Does Liberty City requires unofficial multiplayer clients?
A: Of course, not.

Q: Will this tool work with Episodes from Liberty City?
A: Yes.

Q: Can I play with this mod Online with my friends?
A: No, you will not be able to play online because Rockstar Games does not allows mods in GTA Online.

Q: Will I get banned in GTA Online with this mod?
A: With a high probability, yes.

Q: How can I help?
A: In a future, we will need help with creating some arts, additional assets, testing etc. We will announce it separately.

Before the OpenIV tool set was used to mod GTA V and Max Payne 3, it was used for GTA IV, hence the name and why the trailer states this new project, “It is time to go back where it all started.” When exactly players will get to make that journey, however, remains to be seen.
