The Weekend In Esports: The Smite World Championship Returns To Atlanta

2017’s only just started and there’s already a ton happening in esports this weekend. If you’re snowed in or just looking to completely ignore the world around you, we’ve got you covered. Here’s when and where you can watch the biggest events happening in pro gaming this weekend.

Smite

The World Championship for Smite is going on this weekend at the 2017 Hi-Rez Expo in Atlanta, Georgia. The top teams from the around the world have been duking it out since Thursday to see who will claim the largest portion of the tournament’s $US1,000,000 ($1,371,880) prize pool and be able to declare themselves the best team coming out of the game’s third season.

Play resumes today with the first leg of the semifinals featuring Team Eager vs. Team HAPI, followed later by NRG Esports vs. Luminosity Gaming.

The game’s console finals are scheduled for tomorrow at 12:30 PM EST, followed by the PC finals at 5:00PM EST. You can watch all of the matches in the stream below.

Paladins

If the name Paladins sounds familiar, it might be because of how much it was compared to Overwatch when the game’s beta released earlier this year. Months later, the game is getting is getting its first major tournament at this year’s Hi-Rez Expo with the Paladins Invitational. The tournament began on Friday Australian time, and of the eight teams who started out, only half remain. Those that are left will be fighting over a $US150,000 ($205,782) prize pool.

The semifinals take place today at 1:30PM EST and 2:45PM EST, followed by the finals tomorrow at 10:00AM EST

You can watch all the matches here.

Dota 2

The good news is that, barely a week into 2017, we’ve already got a pretty big Dota 2 tournament to dive into as some of the game’s best teams struggle with the 7.00 patch and try to sort out the meta before the next Major. The bad news, if you’re in the States at least, is the ESL One Genting 2017 is being held in Malaysia, leading to all the games being played at the most ungodly hours.

Direct invites Digital Chaos, Virtus.pro and Wings Gaming all made it out of the group stage, along with Chinese qualifier Newbee. The teams will now face one another in the semifinals tonight, followed by the best-of-five grand finals series early Monday. The prize pool is $US250,000 ($342,970), but more importantly, there’s the prospect of a TI6 rematch between champions Wings Gaming and runners-up Digital Chaos should both teams make it out of the semifinals.
