Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s Director Shows Screenshots Of The Game’s First Boss Fight

This is what fighting the giant scorpion tank guarding the Sector 1 Mako Reactor at the beginning Final Fantasy 7 will look like in the game’s remake. If it ever comes out that is.

Tetsuya Nomura, the game’s director, revealed two new screenshots for the game at this year’s Magic Monaco 2017 event. The above image shows Cloud and Barret unloading on the security drone a firing clash of gun-arms and Buster swords. For a quick point of reference, here’s what the fight looked like in the original game.

Interestingly, the new screenshots also offer a glimpse of the game’s battle interface, at least as it currently exists. I’m not sure why there’s a slot for both magic and Materia, or why Cloud and Barrett both have hit points north of a thousand. The HUD look’s simple and sleek enough, and hopefully it doesn’t fall into the same traps that snagged Final Fantasy 15.

Beyond the two quick screenshots, Nomura had nothing else to offer, noting that while he had wanted to show an entire video at the event, that decision had been vetoed by his colleagues. Square Enix had nothing new to say about the game at the series 30th Anniversary Celebration either, instead just showing off some of the game’s new artwork. 

Nomura also offered a quick peak at Kingdom Hearts 3, a game that’s been in development for several years having first been revealed at E3 2013.

Neither game has anything close to a release date yet.


  • …still not feeling good about this remake. I mean, who asked for FFVII to be remade as an action-RPG anyway?

    • I never hype for anything. Because, unlike some people, I have basic pattern recognition skills.

      As long as it’s at least FUNDAMENTALLY still Final Fantasy VII the eventual game cannot be actually BAD- but I’m saying at least 2/3 odds the non-eye candy-related aspects of the game (combat system etc) are going to be less fun than the 20-year old original.

      • I’ve read really vague comments from Nomura about how there is supposed to be a lot of new story.

        It’s really hard to know how they will deliver this.

  • That combat system on FFVII screams of Kingdom Hearts with the way they’ve set up the menus.

    Consider the hype train active as balls.

  • Unless I win an XBox Scorpio from a competition that I will never enter, I will just hang out for the Vita port

  • I’m interested to know more about the battle system now. There are multiple levels of ATB bar which may mean some attacks can be boosted or only activate at higher ATB levels, sort of like BP abilities in Bravely Default. It also looks like there may be positioning involved given that Cloud’s hiding behind cover in one pic and in the other it looks like he’s moving to flank the scorpion. If it’s anything like Xenoblade Chronicles/X’s combat system then I’m all for it.

    • If XV was anything to go by, combat will go through sweeping changes multiple times.
      It ended up being a much different beast to its demo counterparts.

      Although I already entertained the premise that the combat in XV is an Ubi-esque prototype for another title, VII for example.
