As revealed by Target yesterdy Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is getting a sequel on August 23 called Shadow of War. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, here’s nearly two and a half minutes of standard Middle-Earth cinematics, with the promise of gameplay on March 8.
As expected, players will be wielding a new Ring of Power against iconic foes like Sauron and the Nazgul. The trailer description notes that the Nemesis system is expanded for the sequel, with player actions shaping the entire world. Neat!
In Middle-earth: Shadow of War, players wield a new Ring of Power and confront the deadliest of enemies, including Sauron and his Nazgul, in a monumental battle for Middle-earth. The open-world RPG is brought to life through the expansion of the award-winning Nemesis System. The robust personalisation from the first game is now applied to the entire world where the environments and characters are all shaped by player actions and decisions, creating a personal world unique to every gameplay experience.
Considering this week’s leak, it’s a possibility this trailer was rushed out the door. Maybe it was supposed to be released alongside next week’s gameplay trailer. As it stands it’s a pretty bland example of paint-by-numbers high fantasy fare.
I guess now we wait until March 8, unless Target wants to show us gameplay earlier.

Nice. Shadow of Mordor was a pretty decent game, despite the repetition endemic to the formula. I actually picked it up again a few weeks ago since I never finished it the first time around.
I just hope they’ve smoothed out the difficulty curve, you were pretty much an immortal god of destruction once leveled up in the first one.
As I never finished it the first time around, I restarted Shadow of Mordor last night after Target’s early reveal yesterday. Gee this is a good game! I ended up playing into the early hours, I haven’t enjoyed a gaming session this much for ages!
Very much looking forward to Shadow of War.
All I want to do is tame a Bal-Rog!!!
Absolutely loved the first, and will pick this up day one for sure.
Now I just need the other killer game from 2014 to get a direct sequel…….Black Flag.
Easily my favourite AC since the original.
That reminds me, I need to go back and take down those legendary ships some day!
So the end game for this would need to be put sauron in the eye and throw yourself into mt doom with the new ring, right?
Basically… It’s hard to get surprised or excited with stories told within the past.
“The age of man is ending” – Ooo scary… Except, that’s not what LOTR showed me.
Pretty sure the first game was quite liberal with the canon – maybe it’ll diverge in a way that could be surprising?
I dunno about paint by the numbers, and I didn’t care one bit for the story of the first game, but I thought that trailer was great! One of the best games this gen even still, definitely deserves a sequel and am so keen to jump back.
