Nioh has some difficult bosses. They will shish-kebab you in the blink of an eye. What if I told you one magic spell that turns them into total pushovers?
I’ve played close to 50 hours of Nioh. I’ve slain brutish yokai and engaged in some pretty awesome sword duels. I’m a straight up ninja warrior. Until now, I’ve hardly touched the game’s Onmyo magic, which allows the use of special spells and items. This was a huge mistake.
After levelling up your magic points to level 10 and competing the first two magic dojo trials, you can unlock Sloth Talismans. These spells slow down enemies to a snail’s pace and make bosses a breeze to fight. Here I am fighting the ice spirit Yuki-onna without using Sloth Talismans:
Holy shit. What the hell? I blinked for a second and she stabbed me through the chest. Confession time: I spent roughly one hour and 20 minutes darting, dashing and dying until I finally managed to slay this nefarious spirit through judicious and well considered use of my spear. Then I finally listened to my coworker Kirk Hamilton’s tip and used magic. Time for a rematch. Here’s how it went:
Night and day difference. Those attacks would be twice as fast and require me to actually dash through her guard. Here? I just do a little dance before casually walking up and cutting the spirit to pieces with my dual tachi.
The results are in and nine out of 10 samurai agree: Sloth Talismans make teeth bright and yokai deader. I should know. I used to be a level one gaijin moron and now I’m a level 53 kunoichi. And if I can do it, you can too!

Can you guys please use a different gif maker.
Australian internet 🙁
Greeeat… i haven’t even looked at magic and am just pumping into body and stamina… and yes right now bosses are tremendously quick needing me to reload more than a few times or relying on my special to take them down. Arrrrggghhh.
Never fear, you can re-spec 🙂
Ehhh the use of sloth talisman on bosses has been floating around YouTube. Clearly where you found this. I’m sure it will be patched soon. Even if it isn’t, if this is how you want to vs a difficult boss then use it. I’m sure there are a lot of players who will choose no to.
Witcher 3 magic could be abused pretty handily too. Quen reflect especially
FF15 magic could trivialise a number of toughish encounters
Actually a great many Final Fantasy games had magic combos you could abuse
X Attack etc in pokemon can make a big difference but generally isn’t used often
Many games find themselves with one aspect that is only vaguely obvious in it’s usefulness that, with some thought can be incredibly overpowered.
Somewhat unrelated but why are the Kotaku US articles using gifs instead of video clips? Streaming video was invented so you didn’t have 30 – 40 MB 256 colour animated images in your web page…
Nice tip! Good article (except for the GIF animations, sorry guys). I’ll have to look into the use of magic, especially this sloth spell.
At the moment, I was focusing my stat points on body (for HP and spear), skill (light armor and dual swords) and heart (ki). I’m basically running around in light armor using spears and dual swords… very fun and fast character.
So basically the magician from Demonsouls lol. Get your cheese on!
