Overwatch highlight intros are just one small part of a very big game, but that doesn’t mean they’re an afterthought. This one Mei animation, for instance, took four days to make.
Highlight intros play, well, before highlights — for instance, when you’ve gotten Play Of The Game. Artist David Gibson, who we’ve featured before, recorded himself making one and turned it into a timelapse.
It’s some damn intricate work. The posing, positioning, and expressions are done pretty much entirely by hand. Gibson even made sure to get the movement of Mei’s glasses and nose just right.
All in all, I think it’s pretty…
I’m not sorry. Mei is annoying as shit. This is exactly what she would have done if she was a writer for Kotaku dot com and I was a scientist girl who recently emerged from cryostasis to save the environment by annoying all of humanity to death.

That timelapse is incredible. I’ve done a bit of 3D modelling/animation (just enough to know that I suck at it) but this… I have endless respect for these guys. The finger-drawing thing just ends up looking so natural but I can’t even imagine trying to replicate that properly ‘without a lens’ as they put it.
