The upcoming Destiny 2 will be a total reset for your Destiny 1 characters, Bungie said today, confirming that you won’t be able to carry over weapons and gear from the first game. Your character’s appearance, however, will be retained.
“Sequels represent the start of a new adventure for every player, with new worlds to explore, new stories to tell, new powers to acquire, new loot to earn, and much more,” Bungie said on their blog today. “This led us to a decision that would enable us to serve both the game and the player’s best interests: Destiny 1 power, possessions and Eververse-related items and currency will not carry forward. They will, however, remain accessible to you in Destiny 1.”
News of Destiny 2‘s character reset shouldn’t come as a surprise to hardcore Destiny fans. In September, we reported that Bungie is looking at Destiny 2 as a fresh start for their shooter-MMO series, and that this strategy will mean leaving your old characters behind.
It is undeniably the best move for what has become a somewhat stale game over the past year thanks to skewed weapon balance and a lack of new content. Although Bungie originally marketed Destiny as a game with a “ten-year plan” in which your characters would remain with you for an entire decade, most fans would agree: It’s time for something new.
“We know that, just like us, you have grown fond of the Guardians you’ve created, so we do plan to preserve your character personalisation,” Bungie said. “We are going to recognise the dedication and passion you’ve shown for this world. Specifically, the class, race, gender, face, hair, and marking selections for all characters that have achieved Level 20 and completed the Black Garden story mission will carry forward. We also plan to award those veteran accounts with honours that reflect your Destiny 1 accomplishments.”
Bungie says they will also be revealing more information on the big Destiny 1 spring update over the next few weeks.

It’s been pretty much confirmed by one of their images, that old raids will be making a comeback in some way. Max level fatebringer to close out the end of the first game? Yes please!
The first games content roll out was so trash, I don’t see how anyone could ever justify getting the second unless they massively increase the amount of content you get.
I have 750 hours on maybe a $200 payout. If only more games offer that sort of value. A game is what you make of it, not just what the devs create. Why is it so hard for people to understand just because you don’t like something that doesn’t mean it’s all bad.
I do agree I wish there was more updates and events but I don’t see that negating all the good it does elsewhere
What good? You pay excessive amounts for very little content. You are the abused spouse that tells every one “But its fine, he loves me”.
I paid about $120 for about 1500 hours of Destiny (and still going).
Is that excessive still or do I need to play and enjoy more to meet your subjective standards?
Hilarious analogy btw.
Domestic Violence is not a joke. Don’t cheapen it by using it as a terribly inaccurate analogy.
Once again I point out what I wrote: just because YOU cant find any good, that doesnt mean there isnt any good to be found by OTHERS. An extension of that thinking is: Maybe the game just isnt for you. Thats not the games fault. Nor the devs. Nor other gamers. The game we got is not the game you wanted.
I bought Destiny day one and enjoyed it a lot…. up until they released the first DLC. I decided not to buy it (DLC) and it soon became apparent that I was being punished for that decision. If they were more open about the way Destiny was going to progress as a game when they released it, then I would have been fine with it, but I felt like I got duped by Bungie/Activision and it still stings to this day.
Been playing Destiny since day one and can’t imagine why people have a problem with it. It’s not like this game has more rpg where your character is really unique and it’s not like an mmo where your character development is long and complicated series of upgrades. Even if we could keep our stuff with an hour or so it would all be redundant.
i don’t find this surprising, but it will be a good litmus test for other MMOs
on one hand, assuming the ?rumours? are true it will be on PC so that should help with sales, on the other hand it will be interesting to see who is returning from Destiny 1
Had my time with destiny but gave up long ago. Will get Destiny 2 but give zero shits about character rollovers. Gotta say rehashing old raids sounds pretty desperate though. Its like bungie saying yes, we are done with this game but the sequel isnt ready yet so we will appease a huge part of the community by doing what should have been done months ago to stave off the obvious drought of content so you can farm the same raids for the same gear that you wont bother with ever again after the sequel releases.
The problem with carrying over the look of your Guardian is I’m fairly confident that like myself, many people hate the ugliness under the helmet of their characters.
It will be interesting to see if they add a memorial to the tower for the Fallen Guardians
If the tower has been destroyed, why wasn’t fellwinter peak or the vestian outpost used by the guardians as the new social space?
If I had the option to rotate my character when creating them I wouldn’t have ended up with a hideous space nazi cut.
That’s what I want from Destiny 2, immersive character creation.
over 1000 hours on D1 and am happy for a full reset, i want a sequel not an expansion pack, got 3 mostly great yeara out of the first game ans cant wait for D2
Genuinely miss playing Destiny, only regret from getting rid of my Xbox. Hopefully this ends up on PC.
I’m hoping for a Transformers movie level massacre to round out this game prior to the sequel. Time to destroy the last city!
