For nearly 12 years, children and trolls of all ages flocked to Disney’s browser-based Club Penguin for all sorts of kid-friendly (mostly) shenanigans. Today the game closes down for good, and players past and present are paying their respects.
Disney closed the long-lived and well-loved browser game at 5:01 AM AEST this evening. While they will be replacing it soon enough with a new mobile game called Club Penguin Island, that doesn’t make fans on Twitter any less sad to see the original go the way of the dodo.
Here are some heartfelt reactions in 140 characters or less.

With Club Penguin shutting down tomorrow I thought I’d log onto my account I created over 10 years ago for one last time. Thank you to the developers for creating a game that really helped me get through some of the toughest times during childhood.
Along with posting many pictures of their own soon-dead penguin avatars, players on the Club Penguin Reddit proper have organised a pair of final meetups, giving players one last chance to waddle together. Meanwhile, UltraZeroX7 made everyone feel a little bit more depressed about things with this rough piece of fan art. They say they took inspiration from the final scene of Metal Gear Solid 3.
Meanwhile, on the Banned from Club Penguin subreddit . . .
YouTuber Slywolf put together a rather grim sendoff for the game.
Finally we have frequent Club Penguin ruiner YouTube’s Cowbelly TV, who is livestreaming the death of the game in case you want to watch the penguin world burn.
Do not be afraid, Club Penguin. This is a good death. There’s no shame in this … in a penguin’s death. A penguin who has done fine works. Rest well.

Oh wow, that teen in the last pic. The club penguin ruiner. What great choices you have made in your life, hahaha.
The Purple Republic shall live on!
I was on there on the game’s final hour on the snow forts. As shutdown neared, me and the rest stood around the penguin circle, then we gathered together for a big group hug as the game ended. Quite fitting, really. Game made part of my childhood.
RIP Club Penguin. Waddle On, always!
I had been playing Club Penguin since third grade, and right now I’m in tenth, so I had been playing for half of my life. It’s really hard to just “waddle on” from Club Penguin, because the game has always been there to cheer me up when I wasn’t feeling well or was having problems in my real life. I feel like I’ve been able to meet so many penguins that I don’t want to lose connections with. It’s hard for me to move on, because I grew up playing Club Penguin. I usually was on the Blizzard server, and I loved to hang out at the Dance Club to listen to the music everyone made. I also loved to visit igloos, especially Betinha48907, because not only were their igloos amazing and inspirational, but the owners would sometimes be there and greet you, and it always made me feel welcome. I’m really going to miss Club Penguin and all of the penguins I met and my puffles and the creative igloos and the EPF and the music and everything else. I love Club Penguin, and I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. 🙁
