While Blizzard’s more recent releases haven’t exactly been modder-friendly, in the past the company was happy to bundle its games with powerful creation tools, with the Warcraft and StarCraft real-time strategy games being prime examples. But Blizzard hasn’t given up on providing players with ways to generate their own content, with Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan stating the developer is “open-minded” about the issue.
Overwatch has already taken — albeit tiny — steps towards providing players new ways in which to play, with the introduction of custom game modes back in February.
On Blizzard’s official forums, Kaplan mentioned the possibility of a map editor, however, such a tool won’t be coming anytime soon:
We are extremely open-minded about releasing a map editor for Overwatch someday. But because Overwatch was made with a brand new engine, this is not a small task or one which can happen any time soon. We have this on our long-term road map and believe heavily in user-made content. But there are many challenges ahead of us and it will be a very long road before our editor can be made available to the public.
We’ve already seen other developers put out user-friendly map creation tools, with the most recent instalments of DOOM and Halo showing what can be done. Really, all it can do is boost Overwatch‘s longevity.
