We’ve had a month of Switch games looking slightly better and running slightly smoother than their Wii U compatriots. But Mario Kart 8 already looked fantastic on the Wii U, and ran well too. So how does it run on the Switch?
Direct Feed Games on YouTube has a pretty simple direction: direct feed of games from the consoles themselves. Their latest comparison is Mario Kart 8, specifically the Wii U version against the Deluxe re-release on the Switch.
The main differences that stuck out were some improved sharpness, better contrast, a little more detail on the karts themselves. Textures in general are a little clearer, especially in the distance. It’s best appreciated in motion, however, so check out the video below.
Nintendo Life has a side-by-side comparison as well:
Personally, super keen for 1v1 tournaments against Tegan with this. And we’ll be in Tokyo when it launches, which should be fun to witness.

Little typo there mate
Should be a great experience in Japan at release for this, you lucky so and so!
Yeah, nice one….
Yeah, it’s a typo. Fixed now.
If you told me this was a comparison between a wii and gamecube, I wouldn’t have known any better.
You’re more on the mark than you probably expected. The difference in power between the Switch and the Wii U is honestly about the same as it was between the Wii and the Gamecube. Yes there IS a difference there but it’s by no means a significant leap forward. Apart from the slightly higher resolution there isn’t a lot else that’s different.
LOL, what a joke having washed-out colours on the Wii U version. Deceptive much? Just turn up the colour saturation on your TV and you’ve got the Switch version…
The Switch outputs full RGB whereas the WiiU generally doesn’t.
I wonder if the washed out appearance on the Wii U version is due to the Wii U only being capable of outputting the limited RGB colour space?
who is tegan
My partner!
