Original Gundam Composer Yuushi Matsuyama Has Died

Yuushi Matsuyama, the composer of the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime’s theme songs, died last week after his house caught fire. He was 79.

According to Sankei News and TBS, at 4:35PM on April 7, one section of the second floor of Matsuyama’s Tokyo house caught fire. Firefighters were able to rescue Matsuyama, but he was declared dead at the hospital. Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze. 

Besides composing the opening and ending themes for the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime, Matsuyama also wrote the theme for Heidi, Girl of the Alps, the 1974 anime written and directed by Isao Takahata.

Matsuyama also wrote the theme for the Tensai Bakabon anime, among many other iconic shows.
