Hello TAY, did you have a weekend?
I did!
It was the first weekend in ages when it wasn’t raining the whole time. The sun was very pleasant.
Who’s that guy?
That sunshine is so good, I’ve been getting through as much washing as possible.
Melbourne Taybies, if there are any left in here. @dogman
Several taybies from interstate are down to see book of mormon. I’ve organised a lunch at 11am, at the Elephant and Wheelbarrow on Easter Saturday.
Lemme know if you’re interested, so I may forewarn the pub
Most probably got tagged on twitter (Or a personal message if they are very special) but here are the tay tags
@beavwa @budgieishere @chuloopa @coldcamv @crazyguy1990 @f4ction @jordi @mad_danny @negativezero @pixel_the_ferret_viking @scree @smurfydog @tech_knight @tigerion @tofu @trikeabout @zetrox2k
Neg included in case he is back for the easter break
But do any of them even come on Tay?
I blanked out when I was tagging people in twitter, so I need to do it again
I am here.
I have no plans during Easter Saturday-day so I should be able to make it.
Alright. So I’ll add you to the numbers. Thanks
always around if anyone needs anything! going through some pretty busy times at the moment with a lot of stuff, ie. work, looking to buy a house, website stuffs, podcast + tons more, so havent really been active on TAY in a long while. I’m hoping by end of May/June most of that stuff will be sorted….
unfortunately my whole easter is usually taken up by family stuff, which kinda sucks. to top it off my birthday is on Good Friday, and im away for work in Brisbane the week after for a work GPON thing.
I kind of feel like ive taken way too much on at the moment which is causing me a great deal of stress. once the house situation is sorted (fingers crossed) ill invite everyone for some board games drinks and BBQ 😀
hoping everything is sorted in next few months and ill be free to hang out here more often!
Miss talking crap with all you lot!
Most people have moved to twitter, monsters.
Thanks, Tigster!
I wish I was but the immigration people here are fucking around and haven’t given me the ID of the form they submitted and without that I can’t actually submit my own form and book my consulate appointment, and until that happens I can’t make firm plans. Probably looking at being back for two weeks starting in the first or second week of May.
That’s screwy but do let us know when you are back
I will, don’t worry. 🙂
So it’s all booked now actually. And I’m going to just miss the TAYLunch. 🙁 Getting in on the 16th, flying back out on the 30th. Will be busy in the morning on the 18th (Consulate) but no plans yet outside that.
Sounds like a giant headache
damn bureaucracy…
I should get someone to update that so I’m in the Melbourne group now.
Paging @powalen, paging @powalen
Hi I will go.
Thank you
I’m in!
I’d love to, I’ve been meaning to get tickets for ages, but unfortunately my girlfriend will either be in or about to be in surgery. She gets really anxious in hospital so I’ll be spending most of my time there. Thanks for the invite though.
I hope everything goes well.
Thanks. It’ll all work out, it’s just going to take some time.
Doesn’t stop it being scary
Just an FYI in case you didn’t get that from the message the invite is also just from lunch and a few drinks during the day. I’ll likely be joining for lunch but don’t have tickets to the show.
So if you need some down time or some stress release come on down.
Works for me, I should be there
Not a regular taybie but as a relative newbie to Melbourne i need to try and find some people to chill with that are not family members (sorry Mrs ftwstewieg and kidlets). Sadly Easter weekend usually comes around the time of my son and fathers birthday so i will not be able to throw my hat in the ring for this one, but next time you are organising one and if i am on TAY i will try and attend.
There’s always Pax meat
Happy birthday @cookingmama!
Thank you xx
You’re welcome! 😀
Some 50 odd hours into BotW, and still loving it. Really taking my time with this game, and I feel like I’m loving it more each time I play it. Beaten the four Divine Beasts and gotten the Master Sword, and now just exploring and also farming Guardian components to make the Ancient Armor.
I found myself spending a good 5 or 6 hours yesterday just wandering the world looking for… stuff. Korok seeds, shrines, anything I hadn’t seen before. It was most surprising because I haven’t wandered an open world like this voluntarily and nigh aimlessly in a very long time. Usually I’ll only wander to find collectibles/loot/stuff, but I was just wandering to have a look around. Nothing more. Was actually really relaxing. My housemate, who doesn’t even really play games outside of puzzle titles, even sat down and asked if she could have a go. She just picked up the controller and started walking around, no aim in mind, and handed the controller over whenever something attacked her.
Zelda gush/braindump over.
Man I’m 100 hours in and have only seen one divine beast 😛
Nothing wrong with that! I got to the first Divine Beast near the Zora, and then went off and spent 10 or 20 hours unlocking towers and the rest of the map.
Was anyone else playing the Splatoon Testfire this weekend? I spent about 3.5 hours with the game and loved it. I usually play support with a roller but really got into the Dual Splaties this time.
Otherwise, the maps were fine but not that great – one in particular was easy to dominate if you got the first 30 seconds right.
There seemed to be a lot of people playing the K/D ratio game and missing the objective, but I guess that’s normal.
TAY, everyone. Well, despite the bad hurdle I had at the start I’m finally getting into Breath of the Wild.
Two beasts down and around 40 shrines later I’m finally able to move about without dying from a bug bite.
Still sucks that I still don’t have enough hearts to pull the Master Sword out though. I have 11 and would have had two more but I had put two into my stamina wheel. Which has turned out to be wise as those annoying heavies keep popping up and I have to out run them least they eat all the fairies in my bag.
There is a way to ‘respec’ in BotW. i won’t say anymore for risk of spoilers, but there’s an NPC that can facilitate respeccing your heart/stamina containers. I was on 11 hearts, and swapped some stam to get 13.
just to add to @ynefel speak to the kids in Kakariko village.
I think I have spoken to all of them. Two that stick out are siblings who are doted on by their father more so since the death of their mother.
Will check again’ might find something the second time around.
God damn it Telstra suck. Went to change my DNS settings at the modem & it’s locked down so you can’t.. Why.. I find the Google DNS works better than the shitty ones you guys provide.
I know it is not what you would like but you can change the DNS settings on the computer itself.
I know. But Telstra still force you through theirs with the modem & when I change DNS settings I can’t gain access to the modem. How fucking stupid is that..
Dayum, that sucks.
That shouldn’t happen when you change the DNS but it looks to me there is a lot of rigging in the router.
Maybe Google the router, see what settings are needed to make it work with Telstra, then just get off the shelf router (last I checked, TP Link made good routers at good prices) and enter those settings in.
That’s basically what my mother and I eventually did over time as we got sick of the Telstra routers underperforming and breaking down faster than weapons in Breath of the Wild.
We got a lot better performance and longer durability that ways and were still using Telstra without a problem.
Eh, it’s not a real problem, just a minor inconvenience. I’ll probably end up just buying a much better less restricted VDSL modem when my NBN connection finally gets turned on so I can move to another ISP (when my contract is up next year) without needing a new modem.
Wait… am I misreading that, or does changing DNS settings on your PC prevents you from accessing the modem?
Yep.. I changed to the default Google DNS’ 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 & I all I got was an error message I went to login, that was via the web URL for the stupid thing. But it turns out I can just use the IP of the modem & everything is fine.. Why I didn’t think of that earlier, is beyond me.
But after Googling about these modems, it seems even if you do set a different DNS, the modem forces you to use the supplied one which is weird. But saying that I don’t think that is true, since I can now access sites that were previously blocked so that’s telling me it is using the public DNS by Google. Eh, it’s a telstra supplied modem, they’ve never been good. Well they were back in the Speedstream 4200 days.
Okay, that makes sense – Telstra’s DNS servers provide a name entry for the local IP of your router. Thought it might be something like that, just never heard of an ISP actually doing it. A minor boost to usability, at the cost of customisability.
It also probably explains why they won’t let you change the DNS settings in the modem – if you changed the modem to non-Telstra DNS servers, it wouldn’t be able to lookup the IP of ‘my-telstra-modem.localdomain’ (or whatever it calls itself), and would be only accessible by IP anyway.
I’ve been able to do it on their other modems i’ve owned/still own. But yeah.
that would only happen if you were using a URL to access the modem. because the modems DNS server is what translates the URL to your modems IP. Just use the Gateway address to log onto your modem.
what brand model? there are usually hidden settings pages, and even if not, you can usually SSH into the modem and do it via a terminal client… easier than it looks, and you can get the commands you need online.
“Telstra Gateway” also known as a Sagemcom F@ST 5355. Honestly never even thought of that.
ergh… that thing is a piece of crap… do urself a favour and buy your own… from memory that thing only supports 100mbps ethernet as well… :/
Nah it supports gigabit ethernet, I mean it’s by far the best modem Telstra have sent me though.. Every other one screwed the line every other moment. This hasn’t had a single dropout since I started using it which is amazing. But since my NBN connection is being activated today i’ll have to use it for the time being, until I find something I like as a replacement. Not really sure what to go with, but i’ll find something lol.
if you want a suggestion, go for netgear nighthawk r8000… its pricey (averages around $360, but you can find them for around $290) but its the best investment you can make. not a single dropout…. ever.
Holy shit. That’s a bit pricey lol. It is a nice looking router though 😛
yeah but you get what you pay for trust me… no more having to worry about constant dropouts, freezes, range or anything…. it just works. ive never had anything more reliable.
Yeah that’s fair enough. I’ll see how this one does, it’s been fine so far. I may need a access point for the 5GHz band though, cause of the stupid house & it doesn’t penetrate well enough.
So I tried Overwatch after the new update and I just don’t feel it anymore. It’s a good game but just that I don’t really feel like it’s worth playing anymore. Maybe that’ll change when the next event happens. However, I’ve really gotten back into Titanfall 2, that game is so much fun. Even if I do lose a Bounty Hunter match with a personal score of 3,000.
I finished the first part of Dawn of War 2. Great game, even if it felt like a lot of the mechanics was useless. Plus it ended up being a lot of wave defending. I started Chaos Rising but I guess since I’ve played through so much Dawn of War in the last few weeks I had major burnout. Decided to leave that game for a while.
While looking through my backlog I decided to finally get into Evil Genius. I played this back 10 years ago but a glitch prevented me from continuing. I got a real cheap copy for 4 bucks back in 2013 and decided to get back into it.
Looking forward to DoW3 later this year?
I doubt my laptop can run it.
Here’s hoping it scales well I suppose.
All Splatoon, all weekend. Riding the Ranked yo-yo between testfires, dropping to A+ then climbing back to S then tanking and coming back again. Woo. Not sure I’m entirely sold on Splat2 though. Despite all the fiddling with settings I could never settle on anything that would feel quite right with it, and the best performance I saw was when using it in handheld mode but it’s too damn uncomfortable. Painful to use after maybe half an hour.
I really want custom joycons now. Ones that are made exactly like the sides of the Wii U gamepad, nice curvature to wrap your hands around and better support the weight and joysticks both up top. The whole thing’s only served to make me hate the Switch even more – it’s hampered as a console by trying to be a handheld as well, the joycons are hampered as a single player control scheme by trying to be a two player control scheme as well, it’s all just hybrid upon hybrid and like all hybrids, rather than excelling at one thing it’s crap at being each of several things. Fuck the Switch. Long live Wii U.
Also finally finished off the game of TMNT with my sister and her bf from maybe a month or two ago now. Halfway through book 1, on to book 2. Sometime.
Welp, finished Nier: Automata on Saturday morning, a little earlier than I expected. Went into it with very low expectations – the genre wasn’t normally my cup of tea (read: “I don’t mind spectacle fighters, but I can never get into them because I’m terrible at them”), the “multiple playthrough/multiple endings” thing really isn’t something I’ve particularly liked in the past, as it tends to be repetitive and grindy for very little gain, and after Horizon I’d realised I was a little burned out on open-world games. It was a coin-flip as to whether I’d have even started my second playthrough, honestly, as the first playthrough felt so generic and, bosses aside, boring.
Got my sixth ending (in order, W/A/B/C/D/E), and it’s currently my favourite game of this year. The story is incredible in its twists and escalation – every time I thought I’d figured out what was really going on, the game would subvert my understanding and replace it with something even more convoluted and tragic. The combat is not frustratingly difficult on “Normal” and extremely satisfying (although some of the later bullet-hell sections can go to hell), and the boss fights are amazing in terms of mechanics, spectacle, and backstory.
Cannot recommend this game enough.
Bought Rogue One digitally over the weekend and watched it again – saw it at the cinemas when it came out, and yeah, what a great movie. Just solid, all round.
Not sure if spoiler tags are warranted, but I will anyway – the part where
they show Darth Vader boarding the rebel ship and fucking everyone up still gave me goosebumps the second time around. I always hated we never got to see Darth Vader do much except have a couple of badly choreographed saber battles in the original trilogy. Considering he’s one of the most powerful Sith, or even force users that ever lived, was nice to see some action. It really was a stirring scene.
It’s funny because that’s sort of how the original fights with him felt to me at the time. Back then Knights were my go to sword fighters so the clumsy swings made sense, and Vader was like ‘holy crap, he’s choking his own guys, he’s such a brutal fighter’.In Empire he cuts Luke’s hand off and back then it was so hardcore. As an adult the equivalent scene would be Darth Vader using the Force to flay the guys.
You make a good point, which is interesting – I watched the original trilogy when I was a kid, like a bunch. (I’m 36 now) But I don’t remember being overtly impressed with Vader. Maybe it wasn’t until I got a little older that I appreciated him more, and by then the choreography was a little dated?
WHAT IS REAL, I DON’T KNOW ANYMORE
Started on the new season of Top Gear with just Matt LeBlanc as host with Rory Reid & Chris Harris as the co-hosts. Gotta say this is what it more what it should’ve been. Shows how rushed & poorly put together the Chris Evans effort was. Still gonna take them another season or 2 to find their feet, but I hope it works for them. I especially like Chris Harris he’s great.
Made chicken enchiladas for dinner. They smell awesome & should taste awesome, especially since I used a home made spice mix & are full of tasty things & a bunch of jalapeños!
Mid way through Mass Effect 3, on my replay of the trilogy. The ending really poisoned my memory of the third installment – it is, in fact, a really damn good action game.
The third game is amazingly good, right up until it’s not. I mean the way you go around resolving plotlines and meeting old friends is a brilliant yet subtle goodbye. It helps to think of the entire game as ‘the end’.
It’s basically great until the last 10 minutes or so. Some of the most memorable moments in the series are in there, like
Thane’s death, and shooting the breeze on top of the citadel with GarrusYeah agreed, that and…
Legion always hits me hard on its final moments“Shepard-Commander, I must go to them. I’m… sorry. It’s the only way”
Mordin’s death killed me. He was probably my favorite character. Think I’ve mentioned it before, but I used to go and talk him in his workshop on the Normandy. He was the only character I ever did that with. I loved his approach to things, and his random observations.=(
Had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong.*choke*
Side Topic: is anyone else getting redirected from io9.com to gizmodo? Have they gone region locked or something? I can access articles directly, just not the main page.
I’m getting the same thing
Yep. Gizmodo seems to be marking it as redirected from the US.
Which kinda sucks. They different.
I still can’t believe my dog responds to nap time/I’m going to lay down a while.
He comes into the room and gets into his bed
One of our cats always goes to bed with the other human in the house. When she gets up to go clean teeth, he appears from wherever he’s been lurking and follows her around ’til she goes to bed. And woe betide one of the other cats going anywhere near the bedroom. 🙂
It’s amazing how they know. They learn our routines so well.
My dog and later her pup used to wait until everyone had gone to sleep before going to bed. My dog was used to me sleeping crazy hours so she’d just follow me around ‘protecting’ me. The pup however lived with my sister, so she was used to bed by 9:30. I’d house sit and the pup would follow me around leering if I wasn’t in bed by 10. As cute as she was she definitely had a bad ‘you’re meant to be in bed’ face.
Woo, finally got Splatoon team sorted!
It’s been a rollercoaster. First I was already ditching my friends who don’t really play much at all, and felt bad about that. Then I was teamed up with someone from the Splats group I’ve been lurking with since the comp in January, since neither of us had anyone to group with. Found ourselves a third guy, then while courting a fourth I got approached by someone else with an ace team of three, looking for a sniper. And through further chats I discovered one of the guys was an old friend from a defunct forum. I was itching like all hell to join them, but felt like I couldn’t ditch the others. Then I found out that our third had ditched us, and this was only moments after my friend’s team had filled their fourth slot (with a non-sniper). And then the other one I was with was starting to say she was thinking of not playing at all. Just like they say, nice guys finish last hey 😛
Today, had someone else approach me who I played against (and got crushed by) back in the January comp. She was pretty serious about making a proper team which would continue on beyond this tournament, and was possibly going to bring another along from that team while also talking with some others to fill out the last place. That seemed pretty positive, but then it went radio silent. Got talking with another who was looking for a team, and she got onto the other one as well so it seemed like we might have three, or possibly a fourth and my original team mate could go to OzComicCon instead like she was thinking of doing. But then the serious one went pretty much radio silent, and the other group that we were originally in talks with for a fourth hadn’t said anything or materialised either so we said screw it, grabbed another who had come along looking for a team and just called it. Locked in 😛
Organising people is the worst. This is why I prefer to lone-wolf everything.
I seem to organise a load of things. I dunno why, just always seems to be me
Some people got people skills. I don’t consider myself one of them 😛
Neither do Ii =P
I imagine a lot of the folks who went radio silent will suddenly rematerialise again today, since it’s the last day for registration. Glad to hear you finally got a team together, though, good luck!
Man… Andromeda is really fucking with my sleeping habits *zzzzz*
Lucky it’s pretty amazing /)
You too eh? I’ve been loving it so far and I’ve still only just started, no regrets though on the changes to my sleeping habits 🙂
We all make sacrifices 😉
Exactly 25% and around 27 hours down, I consider it sleep well deprived, lol
Whee, we just had a blackout. It sounds like someone let the new person play with things they shouldn’t and blacked out from the border to apparently Grafton lol.
Destiny 2 teaser’s out, proper announcement scheduled for Friday.
Cabal attacking the last city. Looking like last September’s leak is getting slowly confirmed, piece by piece… and if so, should be a huge improvement from D1. XDGonna pop in to Rise of Triump? I haven’t played for a few weeks, I guess a last tour round things would be good.
Showed my wife the D2 logo. She said “You’ll have a new tv by then…”. Can she read minds?!?
Hoping to get enough peeps together for a crack at Crota-390 tonight or tomorrow. Otherwise, will be online and keen to see what’s changed. Keen to try the nightfall this week? Rainbow burn with Daybreak modifier (ie. Mayhem) sounds amazing, but also incredibly intolerant of minor screw ups, so feel like soloing may be a little frustrating. 😛
Nightfalls for sure. Really just feel like a blast round the traps. Last look before it goes away.
Rainbow burn, you say. Feels like void warlock with gally and an arc shotty then. Woop…
Oh. Queens of the Stoneage are headlining Splendour in the Grass. Neat. Also King Gizzard The Lizard Wizard are on there, those guys strange, but cool. Paul Kelly seems a bit left field, thought he’d be more a Bluesfest act.
Probably can’t organise a festival for a few weeks after we’re expecting a baby… probably. QotSA though… she’ll understand, right?
Totally will. But I would assume they’re gonna do a tour since the festival isn’t claiming them as their own.
Ooer, Royal Blood are on there too!
Woo. My NBN service is due to be activated today, sometime by 2pm. Hopefully means a faster internet connection than the shitty 5mbps i’m currently getting..
Update, I get 23.5mbps down and 4.9mbps up, basically the 25 down & 5 up I signed up for. Not bad for FTTN.. Ping sucks though, 36ms where as I got like 15ms on “ADSL2”. Still not bad.
We went from about 3-5 on ADSL2 in Sydney to a flat 10/1 using a Vividwireless modem once wed moved to Melbourne. Sadly it’s capped at 10/1 and the ping sucked when I tried to play BF1 over it.
Wireless is capped at 10/1? Man that’s a bit shitty, I thought it would adhere to the NBN tiers of 25/5, 50/20 & 100/40.
It’s not NBN fixed wireless, it’s a a plastic box with a 4G SIM card inside. Unlimited data, uses the Optus network. Works fine for the two of us streaming Netflix/Stan etc.
Oh that’s pretty cool then 😛
It’s one of these;
https://www.vividwireless.com.au
Does the job for a few months while we’re in a sharehouse, hoping to move somewhere with FTTB later in the year, or NBN if that’s not available.
HAHAHA OH MY GOD
The dude who was our third, and abandoned us for another team – turns out HE WAS THE ONE TO TAKE THAT FOURTH SLOT THAT WAS BEING OFFERED TO ME!
It is on.
There is now a nintendo switch in our house.
I have to admit, it’s a very cute little machine and I think we’ll have a lot of fun with it, when, you know, there are some actual games available for it.
*click* ^_^
A lot of fun with Snipperclips, Fast RMX, and Snake Pass? Maybe a bit of Shovel Knight?
Splendid.
I just read an article on Female-to-male rape. I don’t understand how people find it impossible to believe it’s a thing.
I feel like anyone who has been raped deserves support, no matter what sex they are
#heavypage2
I did something lighter on the previous page but that went into moderation
…wow the hash symbol is weird as in this font.
*whistles*
Hi everyone
Hi Alex! *goes back to enjoying new PC*
What did you end up putting in it?
i7-6850, 16Gb Quad channel ddr4 (2400MHz), 500Gb Samsung 960 M.2 pcie drive, and then a couple of weeks later, got a 1080ti! 😀
Yowza!!!
😀 Indeed! It’s bloody lovely! 4k gaming at over 100fps!
What’s that in? My monitor is only 60Hz so most games I set that as a limit. I’ve only got a small ITX case though, so I don’t want my 1080 getting too hot and pumping more hot air into the case if I can avoid it.
Doom and Unreal Tournament (UE4 version).
Both run around 120fps average with all settings on maximum.
My monitor is also max of 60hz at 2160p, but I find leaving the vsync off still tends to lead to much smoother gameplay in many games.
Btw, I have a comment that’s been sitting in moderation since yesterday… https://www.kotaku.com.au/2017/03/the-big-question-what-isp-do-you-have/#comment-3795945
I stupidly decided to edit my comment, which for some reason always puts them in to moderation now, even if I don’t add links or anything.
Oh ffs (that’s been approved now).
I found another one yesterday in a different article that was also awaiting moderation. Can’t recall where though. Possibly the one about Ultra detail settings?
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah I’ll go fix it up in a bit *gets gasoline tank*
hahah having issues with moderated comment alerts?
Everything is awesome
Hi Alex!
Last blast round the traps in Destiny this weekend? Think I’ll be Nightfalling with @os42 at some point and we might even go back through a raid…
I’ve moved house and have no internet T_T
I made it back from the Facebook wilderness!
haha welcome back!
Hi! *waves*
Hmm… Destiny 2 gameplay reveal is precisely 4 weeks before the middle of E3. Guessing they’ll open the beta with their E3 presentation then? E3 will probably be something like “Preorder to get access to the beta now, or wait until we open it to the public on Friday.”
Man this east coast low we’re copping here has done some serious damage. Holy fuck. Murwillumbah flooded last night with levels higher than the 1954 floods, which until then were our highest recorded flood levels in the Tweed. A lot of roads have been washed away, or are advised not to be driven on because they could collapse at any moment without warning. More towns are bracing for major flooding today.
Lismore is completely inundated with water too, it’s not unusual for them to flood, but like they did is just heart breaking, worst they’ve seen in a long long time. Likewise a lot of the Gold Coast. This is the 4th major weather event that has incurred major flooding i’ve seen here in the past 15 years. Before that, never really saw anything bad. We’ve been relatively lucky where I am, at most just torrential rain & a lot of puddles with some wind.
Worst thing that happened to me was, work got cancelled & I wasn’t able to take Chilli for a walk. We didn’t lose power, or have water come into the house or wash away our car, or have any trees fall down and wreck stuff. Unlike a lot of other people in the region.
We did get evac notices & orders from the SES but turns out it didn’t apply to every one, just those who immediately lived next to the river. I felt that was poorly communicated, because we had a few neighbours ring up asking us if we were evacuating. They eventually fixed their text message service to say in low lying areas near the river, rather than the entire suburb.. Which would’ve been hard since the only evac centre would’ve been cut off to us, because you have to go through flood plains to get to it…
And here I am complaining about the cold in Melbourne… (It’s not that bad tbh, about 10c when I wake up, not too bad by the time the sun is higher up)
Hey, the cold sucks so that’s fair enough 😛
Welp. Just saw pictures from Murwillumbah where a mate has his factory, water is at the top of the roofs of the cars in the car park. Far out.
I saw they were issuing orders to evacuate west and south Tweed last night. Wasn’t sure if that included you or not. Glad to hear you came out of it ok though!
Worst I copped up here was some ankle deep flooding in the vacant lot outside my back door, and last night at around 5:30, I lost internet for about 3 hours.
Yeah, all the low lying areas. But saying that the tweed river will probably breach here today at some point, since it’s lapping at the edges. Got called into work early too, not looking forward to it with 26+ pallets coming in and bugger all staff available :S
oh my! That’s gonna be fun….. poor fella!
Meh. I’ll be at work from 3pm onwards and we’re high enough all will be fine. Even the house is 900 above the ground and our yard is another 200-300 above the road. Haven’t seen our street flood before either, so we should be fine.
I meant the 28+ palettes! Eep!
Oh haha. I only had 2 chiller pallets to do. Despite another 4 rocking up, by then I was in online so I didn’t have to worry about anything other than taking items off the shelf 😛
hahah lovely! 🙂
789mm at Upper Springbrook. That’s more in a night than Melbourne gets in a YEAR, and about half of Sydney’s annual rainfall.
Stay safe. 🙂
I’m all good. But far out, so many places are fucked here. My mates factory in Murwillumbah saw about 6 foot of water through it :/ Haven’t heard from another mate if his hardware store got flooded, doesn’t seem so, but he did get cut off from getting home to Tweed yesterday it seems.
But the stupidest thing is, they were letting semis down the M1 to get deliveries in for Woolies & I assume Coles. So we got 2 days worth of deliveries for the supermarket yesterday, which was bullshit since we had 3 decent staff filling another 3 who are kinda useless & everyone else couldn’t make it in because of flooding. So 26+ pallets of ambient & at least 4 for chiller.. Don’t think we got a freezer load, so that was nice.
I’m relieved to hear you are ok!
Thanks! It sucks how many people and businesses didn’t come through this in a state where they could get back to where they were before. I also don’t like how the NSW Premier & the PM handled things when they were here yesterday, no word of helping the communities affected. He did say we were “well equipped” and would “bounce back from tragedy” bit of a cop out. Considering it seems a fair few businesses in Murwillumbah may not return.
Melbourne TAY: I’ll be dirtying up your city with my filthy presence from the 16th through to the 30th, and currently have no plans except for the 18th. We should hang out!

(Also anyone else that’s not on the Taytags list for Melbourne)
Cool – let me know what you’re thinking. I’m in Canberra on 18/19 but other than that moderately flexible and always happy to hang out.
heck yeah friend! I’m free most nights after like 7
I should be gainfully employed once more by that point, so should have sufficient finances to join in on any shindigs, hootennanies or general mischief.
i feel like I have no idea what’s happening in my life, so I’ll let you know closer to the date?
I don’t work in the CBD anymore so it’ll be best for me on weekends and I’ll plan accordingly, just let me know when and where and I’ll try to be there 🙂
Weekend CBD meeting is probably the best-case unless someone is willing to host. My parents place is tiny and not great for having people over. CBD is at least fairly central.
Not sure what my transportation situation will look like, apparently my sister’s car crapped out completely and isn’t worth fixing.
Ah okay, that sucks 🙁 hope that can get sorted out
I’d definitely be up for a CBD meetup, maybe on the 22nd/23rd
Yes let us do the thing
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/cms/.114154 welcome to streaming fragmentation. Now you will need a third subscription in addition to Netflix, Crunchyroll and Animelab if you want to watch streamed anime legit in Australia.
Could be worse though. It’s split roughly six ways over here 🙁
Hello TAY, remembering that I’m trying to say hi on this thing sometimes.
Work has gotten so busy they are hiring me another developer for a month or 2 to help out. Learning all sorts of weird things like how to interview developers, important questions like “are you going away next week for a month, because we kinda wanted you to start asap” and exactly what a full stack developer is, apparently (allegedly), me. Realizing I have a strong case of impostor syndrome going on with my work is also a startling thing to figure out. Going to have to figure out how to fix that one now. I’ve also been moved to a different floor, so cant start work early as I dont have an access card to that floor yet. Yay for distractions like TAY.
Also, I have spent the last 5 months building a planet system for my game that would allow my ship to land on a planet using level of detail and procedurally generated terrain. On the weekend, finally got it good enough to put it on my mobile, got 50fps on my old note 4. Super happy with that. But now I’m looking at the gameplay and noticing how clunky the rest of it is. Think I’m finally beginning to notice what difference framerate makes to gameplay. So back to the drawing board and basically cutting out large sections of code to get the rest of the fps in line with the planets.
Have you come up against ooptimising for different mobile chips yet? Though I suppose if you’re cranking 50fps out of a Note 4, should be easier and easier out of Note5/7 & Galaxy S6/7/8 right?
Not yet. I’m using Unity, which is pretty well mobile optimized. The last test I sent a mate on a Sony Xperia was getting about 30fps against my 10 on my note 4 before I optimized to all hell. But yeah, need to benchmark is against more modern phones. And put it on an iphone. I have an iphone, but I haven’t spent any time figuring out how to post too it.
Well I’ve got a Huawei Mate 9, but that’s totally different to Samsung (I believe Huawei developed their own SOC for it) but I’m happy to give it a try if it will help.
Yeah, definately if you’re willing to give it a try. I was going to try and figure out how to message the link too you but nah I dont care, people are welcome to give it a shot. Just let me know framerates, I think I put my email on the app somewhere.

Also, might as well share the youtube channel, what the game actually looks like. Still early, but hey

I need more gaming people/friends to torture, I mean test, things on anyway 🙂
No worries, I’ll grab it and load it after dinner.
Congrats on getting the game to the point you can load it on a device!
What are you using to build the game? Unity? Something else? Totally custom?
All in Unity. Been focusing on c# for years, so finally at the stage I can produce something cool(ish)
Cool! It’s so satisfying when you get to the stage where you can actually start to “play” your game 🙂 I used to work for Krome Studios many many years ago as an artist. I’ve done a bit of coding in my time too, but mostly c++. I remember the first time I managed to get my own game running. It was a very joyous occasion!
That weekend was one of the good ones.
Crashing a bit today!
Got a bunch of stuff done on Sunday, then looked at the clock and it was only 10am. Too bad we can’t add an extra hour into every weekend…
I hink I may have borked my PC.
I tried formatting it after trying to get my BD ROM Drive to show up in My Computer, but after successfully formatting, found out that I couldn’t install Windows 7.
-_-
Fuck.
Any idea why you can’t install Win 7? Is the Blu-Ray drive not showing up in the BIOS or something? I’m happy to help you try and figure out how to fix it if you want. Can reach me on twitter or skype if you want a more real-time responsive chat.
Spring Anime Season is upon us, so…
NegativeZero’s Anime Impressions
Suffering through the new season so you don’t have to
Not much has started yet. Also this season looks to be pretty shit so a good time to go back and watch stuff from previous seasons you might have missed, like Anime of the Year Kemono Friends. Anyway…
Attack on Titan Season 2
It picks up exactly where the previous series left off without even a preamble. Straight into the action. It’s been several years since last time so I was initially a bit confused – it might be worth digging up the last 2-3 episodes of season 1 before starting. It’s still all grimdark and edgy, visually consistent… so more of the same. Which is okay. I probably won’t be watching this weekly as I’m honestly not super into it the way some are.Boku no Hero Academia Season 2
Again, more of the same. I initially didn’t like this show at all – the main character still irritates me – but it really improved once it got going. Fairly standard Shounen Jump action show. Visually a bit mixed up, but it hits the right highs and lows and just generally works well. It’s no One Punch Man but it’ll do. Second season is apparently slated for two cours rather than one like the first season, and looks like it’ll focus on some kind of Hero Olympics, at least initially. Will probably be a regular for me depending on when it comes out and what else I’m watching.Gin no Guardian
Haoliners came out of nowhere a little while ago. An animation collective based out of Shanghai, they seem to be producing several anime every season. And it’s all trash. It feels like they’re taking concepts straight out of the bin at the planning room of mid-00s Gonzo. Pedestrian animation and utterly cliche concepts. No redeeming value. It almost feels like a cargo cult, going through the motions of the other anime studios and producing a facsimile but completely missing the point. Anyway, this was shit and I didn’t make it more than 5 minutes in.Granblue Fantasy: The Animation
Granblue is a popular phone game with really nice art and a Nobuo Uematsu soundtrack. This is basically just a tie-in. Despite some questionable decisions (such as using the Male player avatar, Gran, as the protagonist rather than the vastly more popular Djeeta) it seems like a faithful adaption of the plot presented in the game. Well executed, great character designs, solid cast. Only issue is it’s only 14 episodes. Also I watched the first couple of episodes back in January because they were briefly available for preview, and I haven’t re-watched so I don’t know what if anything has changed. I can’t see it going backward though. Cygames seem to be pushing Granblue hard at the moment, we’ve also got a full ARPG coming up from PlatinumGames, so I don’t think they’ll drop the ball here. Expect this to be a regular watch for me, especially if they expand the cast the right way.Alice to Zouroku
I was intrigued by the premise of this. A girl with incredible psychic powers escapes a shady government-run research lab and ends up encountering and falling in with Zouroku, who is a curmudgeonly old grandpa that kind of reminds me of Hayao Miyazaki. Sadly the production is pretty sloppy and the action really poorly done, and that might hold it back. Still, it seemed like it had some potential so I’ll be giving it some more episodes. Will post more impressions once more stuff airs – by the end of the week the bulk of the interesting stuff will have premiered and we should have a better idea of who is streaming what and what stuff if any will be fansubbed.
I watched Alice last night. I enjoyed it a lot, but the CG was rather jarring
Yeah, it really was. 3DCG seems to be the new hotness in anime but a lot of animation studios seem to struggle with integrating 3D and 2D effects together and not having it feel off. Ufotable seem to be the only ones that can consistently nail it, but they’re an absolutely top-tier studio and everything they do has a ton of digital compositing, lighting and effects already so stuff like for example Illya’s bird shikigami in Unlimited Blade Works look seamless because they were already handling the lighting and everything digitally as part of their process anyway.
If you’re going to half-ass it might as well go full 3DCG. Kemono Friends proved that good 3D animation isn’t necessary to be a cultural phenomenon. That series is so stupid but so great.
Ajin was all 3D and that was pretty good. I quite liked the way they were able to bring certain character mannerisms to life easily. I know a lot of people didn’t like it, but I enjoyed the style.
As for Alice, it was weirdly lit. So the cars looked really shiny and made the 2D animation look flat. I enjoyed it though. The 3D effects of the mirror gate don’t look out of place, so I don’t really understand how they stuffed up the cars so much
Cars might have been outsourced to another studio? That sort of thing happens all the time.
I guess that would make sense
I really need to post in TAY more often.
Hey all! I had a pretty spectacular weekend. Did so many things. Went to a Final Fantasy concert in Brisbane on Sunday night. It was called “a new world” which is different to the more popular “distant worlds” concerts. Main difference being that the one I went to was a lot more low key with a 11 person orchestra. The songs they played had very little cross over with what they’ve played in previous concerts. The exceptions being the big big songs like One Winged Angel and Zanarkand. Whole thing was amazing and would recommend it to anyone that’s even the slightest Final Fantasy fan.
Also, the guy playing the piano was freaking AMAZING! He made me want to learn all the Final Fantasy songs on piano.
HI NOB!
*waves awkwardly*
That sounds awesome. I wish they did that more often. One of the best events like that I ever went to was one of the Eminence orchestra’s performances. Took my parents. It was great. So sad that they decided not to do concerts any more because of the cost.
Oh man I used to go to those. Though none were ever quite as good as the first one I went to.
Um I think you forgot the best part of your weekend.
Hanging out with YOUR BUDDY RED
Took the Mrs to hospital last night, she’s okay, but after 100km of night driving and 3 hours of sleep I think I’m doing an excellent impression of someone who is working.
I am not working – I cannot brainDamn dood. Sounds harsh. Glad to hear your Mrs is doing ok though! Always rough when you have to take your significant other to the hospital :\
Happy birthday to that @sughly guy & also old man @freezespreston 😀
On the phone to Telstra, because they added a 2nd plan to my account when I was under the impression I was changing my mobile plan. Asked for complaints didn’t get put through to them, FUCKING HELL.
and they fucking hung up on me. Useless pack of pricks.
lol sure you weren’t talking to centrelink? Sounds an aweful lot like them! 😉
They texted me back saying it was done and left a voicemail. I should listen to it I guess… I was in a shitty mood all night at work cause of them though lol.
Also they didn’t fix my plan or give me the NBN speed boost that I went in store for the other day, fucking hell. Even though I watched him do it, god damn it. Cause my new billing month just started today and I wanted to get in before that. Guess that wasn’t happening.
Damn… That’s kinda shitty :\ Hope they get it right soon!
Ah well. I’ll go back and see someone competent there >_>
I wouldn’t rely on store staff for competent. You probably would have better luck speaking to someone in tech support who can actually do something about it right away.
Unless it’s the complaints dept, I find them highly useless and unhelpful lol.
Yup, they’ve done the same to me too. I just don’t know how they can be so incompetent.
The young girl in store was heaps helpful today when I had to go back, she sorted everything out for me in regard to my mobile & hopefully my NBN speed boost. If I have to go back in a few days time, then oh well, they’re all pretty pleasant to deal with there especially since I serve a fair few of them at work lol.
So there was a teaser trailer posted for the upcoming Cardcaptor Sakura anime coming next year and I cannot describe how hyped I am for this.
The fuck Fanta. Jelly Fizz Fanta is wtf.. More like Jelly Jizz..
So… VoG’s still pretty damn fun, but oh my god, Atheon’s challenge mode… holy crap.
Templar’s challenge mode is basically what everyone expected – “block all of his teleports.” Nothing too crazy there. Atheon’s, tho… it changes the focus of 90% of the fight. “No-one can kill more than one oracle between damage phases.” There are six oracles total, so everyone needs to kill one. If an oracle is missed, it’s a wipe. If someone kills more than their allotted oracle, the challenge fails. If anyone dies, there won’t be enough people to cover all the oracles on the next teleport, so either Atheon dies or challenge fails. Meaning, the three on the outside need to rotate inside to kill an oracle each, but if everyone is inside at any one time, the team wipes.A lot of fun when everything goes right, but it took us a good hour to get into a workable routine.
That’s insane.
I feel it’s still simpler than Aksis, as there’s a lot more that’s visible to everyone without the need for callouts, and there’s only really two necessity-defined roles (relic and anchor). Which portal people are in can be seen on the minimap, who’s killed an oracle is in the kill-feed, etc.
You strictly only need a couple of extra callouts – one to pick who’s “anchoring” outside to clear supplicants and prevent the wipe; and a callout when the first person leaves the portal, so that the anchor can rotate in to kill their oracle. Beyond that, everyone but the anchor go inside, shoot oracles until their name shows in the kill feed. Relic bearer stays inside to cleanse people as they leave; people leaving head to the middle asap and clear as many supplicants as they can before they go blind. Last oracle dies, everyone heads to the middle if they’re not already there, bearer cleanses and everyone damages Atheon as normal.Only real requirement is that everyone have decent oracle-killing weapons, and have a little more awareness with what they’re doing. When everyone gets into the new rhythm, it’s a super fun encounter – everyone has something they need to be doing at all times, so there’s no downtime at all. Plus, there’s a lot of room for role optimisation for the really coordinated teams.
eg. splitting three per side before teleports maximizes the odds of opening the portal quickly; prioritising a nighthawk GG to anchor outside so the last oracle can be taken out quickly if need be; have a bubble titan prioritise the first oracle, so they can be out first and put down a bubble at the back of the middle platform to shield oracle killers from supplicants until the relic bearer arrives…None of that is strictly necessary, but it can help mitigate time lost due to the random teleports or supplicant behaviour.
Started sharehouse hunting a few days ago to secure a place by May. Feels like a trap waiting to be sprung.
Ugh… that sounds hellish. I don’t think I could share a house with anyone but my family or significant other anymore. Spent many years living with my (ex)wife, and when she bailed, I lived on my own. Have been doing so for a long time now, and i honestly don’t think I could handle sharing with some random. Too used to having total freedom!
Hope all goes well for you in your search though! House hunting is bad enough, but I can imagine that doing that as well as having to factor in whether the other person is someone you can actually live with would be a nightmare!
I’ve had the good fortune of living with a friend for the past few years, but we’re parting ways and rando sharing is the only option on the table. Trying to leverage it as a good opportunity but past experience reminds me that randos are weird – myself included.
Living alone would be the dream life. Well, living alone with pets would be.
So, it’s a small news story really, but I’m feeling so happy today that Barry Manilow is happily married to his husband of 39 years and able to talk about it in public.
Predictably, twitter is full of smug morons declaring that “everyone like knew already” and “it’s not news”, but let’s not forget – he was at the height of his popularity in the early 80s – the same time that the AIDS epidemic began to hit the US. He would have lost a lot of friends, lived with a lot of fear and if he’d come out publicly at that time, it could have killed his career. You can’t blame him for keeping up appearances.
Also, thank god he was trending because was out, and not the other reason.
Hehe it always freaks me out when I see someone I like trending. Like OGM PLEASE DON’T BE DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good thing it’s not just me whenever I see that when I glance onto facebook every now and then 😛
That’s usually where it gets me too. I don’t see trends on twitter or anything. Funnily enough, I had a reverse one of those moments yesterday. Can’t recall who’s name it was, but I was like “Fuck… please tell me they’re dead?!”. I was disappointed to find out they had visited some shop…. i was like… that’s what counts as news now? Celebrities visiting a particular shop?!
@geometrics
Thanks for the Nightfall assist last night. 🙂 No comms didn’t help but you were NATed and the other guy lives in a studio with his partner was asleep in the same room…
Wasn’t too bad in the end but that first wipe was unfortunate! 🙂
No problem, thanks for the invite! Those mobs spawning at the end boss were insane, seemed like a whole heap more than usual. I think our mistake was getting too spread out, once we sat in that area where we stayed for the second try it was a lot more manageable.
That’s Nightfall for you. We nearly did the same thing on the second run but I dived round a corner and went invisible as soon as I was Last Guardian Standing… hehe. You’re right, that’s probably the best spot if the team doesn’t have the dps and coordination to take the boss out before the first curse… (which is what we were doing the other night when I was with @os42 and another regular not from here – arc rocket volley and then snipe boss in the eye ’til fall-down-go-boom). Still no Icebreaker though. Bah.
Oh yeah normally I don’t go in with any great plan to “kill them before x” or some massive DPS strategy. I get enough of that from my regular raid group, I use the nightfalls and strikes to have fun and try out weapons with burns I wouldn’t regularly use. I feel like too much of Destiny devolves into what you “should” do as opposed to what you want to do (Gjallarhorn / mandatory exotic in the heavy slot).
I didn’t even pick up the nightfall bounties on that character cause I was in a rush cause my team was waiting to start the raid afterwards. What a dummy. I’ve literally never had icebreaker and i’ve been playing since the Alpha. I have a hundred exotic boot engrams in the last month though, so that’s… something?
My current PC headphones are falling apart and I’m looking to get a new set and generally fix my sound setup altogether. My goal is to have a set of decent speakers for mostly listening to music while I work, and an external DAC to power good quality headphones for gaming. I can just switch between sound devices to toggle between speakers and headphones so I don’t need external hardware to manage that, though if there’s a DAC that supports both speaker and headphone out with a switch I’d certainly take a look at it.
Rambling story aside, I realised I’m way out of date when it comes to what the good equipment and good brands are any more. I’m looking for a good quality headset (no mic) in the $500 range (+/- $100) and a good quality external DAC to support it. And when I say good quality for the headset I mean audiophile level good.
I know we have some audiophiles here, anyone have advice on a good versatile set of headphones and USB DAC?
I don’t really know what’s what in headphone land as I don’t use them, but if you’re interested in decent speakers, and not afraid to spend $300 odd, the Logitech z906 would be a good option.
It’s like the new version of the z5500’s I have.
Reason why I recommend it for you, is that the control pod that comes with it, has headphone and microphone ports on the side, meaning you don’t really need a separate DAC. You can control which sound source to use via the control pod directly, and has all kinds of settings as well (like levels, Dolby, THX etc.)
Someone else might have to help out with the headphone side of things though. I know there’s one’s out there that offer 7.1 surround sound and stuff, but I’ve never used headphones really, so can’t recommend specifics.
Thanks, I’ll look into it. My plan is for the headphones to be the primary sound system and speakers to be mostly just for background stuff. I have an old 5.1 set of Creative speakers (no idea what model) on my desk right now and while they do a good job of immersive sound they also take up a ton of space and I’m wondering if I can’t get a similar experience with just a decent 2.0 or 2.1 set.
Unlikely you’ll get the same kind of experience with 2.1, but there are a few sets around that attempt to get you close. For saving space, you could go for something like the Logitech Z337. (RRP $99) It’s bluetooth or wired, so you could connect wirelessly if you chose to. It also has a wired control pod that houses the bluetooth pairing system, and it also has a headphone port in it for easy access. (That saves you actually switching sound devices in your PC, as it will automatically cut off the speakers when the headphones are plugged in.)
There’s also the Z523, which is similar, but has “360 Degree sound” which might help to give that 5.1 feel.
If you want to ;pay a little more, you could go up to something like the Z623 or Z625. ($149 & $169) which are 2.1 sets with THX certified audio.
I’ve added them to my research list, thanks.
I’ve been out of the loop for a while. Are there people in your vicinity who will be annoyed with slight sound leakage or do you live with a higher than average level of ambient noise? No to both, go with open headphones.
Avoid Sennheiser because their quality is all over the shop; Beyerdynamic can be a bit of alright. I’m a stickler for Audio Technica, and their ATH-AD900/X models are a solid option for around ~$250. I’ve had a pair of the A500s for about 8 years and they’re only now running into problems.
I record gameplay with voice sometimes and I’ve found open headphones get picked up by my microphone, makes it a little fiddly to filter out in audio processing. I usually go for closed headphones or ones that give the option to switch between open and closed. I know it gives a smaller sound stage but I’m alright with that.
I’ve had two Beyerdynamic headphones previously and while they were great audio quality, I found the build quality was poor in both cases. For one of them the internal wiring in the left cup would cut in and out (and eventually permanently cut out) and on the other one the cable itself degraded. I tried getting quotes from local audio shops for cable replacement or repairs but they all quoted half the cost of buying a new set altogether.
I’ll keep an eye out with the Audio Technica range. Do you know if they have quality $500 tier headsets with removable cables? With all the trouble I’ve had with headphone cables before I really want to try to ensure that part is easily replaceable if need be.
ATH-MSR7 are closed and have a detachable cable, around $300. Haven’t heard much about them so I couldn’t readily recommend. Word is they’re not the most bass heavy – a claim that’s pertinent to AT in general – if that’s a consideration.
I’ll put it on my research list, thanks!
