Hi-Rez Studio’s hero shooter caught some flak last year for looking and feeling a lot like Overwatch, but it’s still managed to maintain a healthy presence on Steam’s most-played games list. We’ll see if the trend continues as Paladins launches into free open beta on PS4 and Xbox One.
The closed beta is over, and now everybody can jump in, dressing up fantasy heroes, customising them with card-based powers, and sending them off to die over and over again, and for what? Contesting points? Escorting payloads? Those poor people. Watch them hurt each other for our amusement.
To celebrate the open beta launch, Hi-Rez Studios has released a cinematic trailer in which the character that looks a lot like a World of Warcraft goblin in a mech chases after a unit of in-game currency. I am not sure I get the message they are trying to send.
It’s a pretty fun game, really, and though it shares similarities with other games, it has its own vibe going and is worth checking out. The game is available as a free download on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, with Founder’s Packs which unlock every champion that will ever be added to the game for $29.95 on PlayStation 4 and $26.95 on Xbox One.
As for the whole looking like Overwatch thing, don’t get so stressed. It also looks like Battleborn.

I got to play the closed beta through the Xbox One early access testing and it was pretty fun. Balance seemed to be a bit off though.
I played the character that looks like Ratchet from Ratchet and Clank, not sure on his name. The card set up I had meant that my attacks were as follows:
I had a heal grenade that filled most of anyone’s health bar. If I targetted anyone that isn’t me, I’d still heal for 90% of the amount. They’d also get a speed boost.
My ult turned people I shot into defenceless chickens. I know this is in a lot of games, but it was still a bit OP.
I had a jumpy dash that made me hard to hit. While the ability was active I’d heal for about 50hp per second which is about 4% of my max health I think and it lasted for about 7 seconds.
I don’t remember what the last ability was, I think it was just a high damage grenade.
All those together though meant that I was really difficult to kill and since I was support, most in my team had a really high chance of staying alive. I think I played about 4 games, one was against bots and I won them all. Only quit because it didn’t feel challenging.
That being said, I’m no pro. I felt like I should have died a bunch of times but our teams had way too much survivability.
Pip, is the character
This was an awesome game, till they introduced the last few characters that totally unbalanced the game, my lads and I actually stopped playing it for that reason, if they rolled it back to before Maeve and every character since was introduced, we would come back
Biggest problem though is the character lock, you cant see the other team when choosing toons, and once you have chosen its locked for the whole game, meaning if your counter is on the other side for your spec\class, your fucked and you cant do anything about it besides bend over for the entire game, were as with Overwatch, if your getting rolled, you can change toon on death or by going back to respawn
been playing Overwatch ever since, its less unbalanced, even with its oneshot ultys
