Wonder which shooters folks in Japan like best? Here’s a poll that might shed light on that question.
[Image: Activision | Rare | Blizzard]
As with the previous polls (here and here), each person was allowed to vote for up to three titles (though people could only vote for one or two if they wanted). Famitsu then calculated these votes as “points”. While the game titles have been localised for clarity, the hardware platforms are as listed by Famitsu.
Unlike the previous polls, which saw over a thousand people participate, the number of Famitsu readers who cared enough about FPS and TPS games to respond was significantly smaller.
Only 307 people replied (90 per cent were men and 10 per cent were women). Out of that, 15 per cent were in their teens, 39 per cent were in their 20s, 30 per cent were in their 30s, 13 per cent were in their 40s, and three per cent were 50 and up. No doubt these folks really, really love shooters!
As with other polls, participants could put whatever games they wanted in their replies.

Honestly, I’m rather surprised not to see Halo in there! The game has a hardcore following in Japan.

Goldeneye 007 in anything other than first place is a goddamn disgrace. You’re wrong, Japan. You’re just wrong.
Fight me, I’d place it behind Doom.
I can’t fight you. I’m too busy choking on my own indignation!
Goldeneye wasn’t even that good a game. People just look upon it fondley with nostalgia.
It was a brilliant game at the time and pioneered a few staples of the FPS genre. Time hasn’t been kind to it however.
It’s a benchmark of the genre, for good reason.
The real crime here is RE4 being up the wrong end of the list.
(and Doom too)
Yeah that’s fair enough. There’s definitely a few titles there that could bumped down a bit for RE4 … I don’t understand why but the RE series has gone a bit on-the-nose the last few years, I still enjoy it. Just downloaded RE zero to do an achievement run on … might slowly make may my way through them all again.
Goldeneye has aged terribly.
Fake news!
No you have!
Meh, people just have Nostalgia goggles for GoldenEye. It had an IP people recognised and liked and was essentially the first of it’s time on consoles. So people played a lot of it. It was behind and not as good as what PC titles such as Quake were doing at the time. But yeah it’s James Bond, a good game and all the console peasants had at the time. So they remember it as being some unique and stand out game. When it was just a decent FPS among many, but the only one they could play.
Your comment suggests you never actually played the game, especially since you’re actually comparing it to Quake. Both are FPS games, but you just can’t compare them for how different they are.
Perhaps being a little less one-eyed towards PC’s might actually be good for you.
Yours faithfully,
A PC and console gamer.
I played it at the time and it was fun for consoles. It was only good for the social sitting around with friends aspect and James Bond theme.
Also sounds like you’re also only talking about it from a multiplayer aspect.
As I said in another comment, it was a benchmark in the genre.
Love it or hate it, it did more than tickle the fancy of a few console players.
Saying it’s the greatest of all time is loaded I agree, but it is oneof the greatest games of its time.
There was nothing like it on any platform and it had a lot of little firsts that have become standard and expected from any shooter.
From a cultural standpoint it had a broad and facinating impact on gaming in so many ways, from the experiences it offered, to how people played games.
Don’t get me wrong, I was hitting the local computer store after school to Quake LAN, but Quake and its contribution to gaming was unique in its own right and hardly comparable to Goldeneye.
In many ways for me, Quake reigns in its technical contribution to PC gaming, long after its time.
Siege, EDF, MAG and CoD4.
Hey Japan, thats some fine taste in shooters, I dig it.
Why are the two completely different Goldeneye games lumped together as one? May as well add the turd Goldeneye Rogue Agent to the mix.
I think I remember playing that.
No, no I should say that I don’t remember playing that at all…..
