A few months ago, Mark Walhberg and producing partner Stephen Levinson announced Alien Bounty Hunter, a new series the duo hope they can help build from the ground up from the pages of a comic book to the subject of a blockbuster franchise. And now io9 has a look at the world that could one day come to a silver screen near you.

Vault Comics’ Alien Bounty Hunter — written by by Adrian F. Wassel and David M. Booher, based on a story by Levinson and F.J. DeSanto, with art from Nick Robles and creative direction from Wahlberg — follows the adventures of Ben Madsen who, unsurprisingly, is a bounty hunter. Who hunts aliens. That’s pretty much everything you need to know, really, but the series itself will dive into a bit more than just its simple title premise as it gets going.

Alien Bounty Hunter is one of those names where you think the title explains it all,” co-creator Wahlberg said in a statement provided to io9. “You think you know what you’re getting but once you strap in, you’ll realise ABH is so much more than you expected.”

“We wanted to establish a grounded story in which the characters and their lives continued past the page,” Levinson continued. “No matter how crazy our world or characters became, we wanted it to feel real and authentic to our story.”

Although Madsen’s journey starts out pretty simply, he soon finds himself in an outlandish world: a secretive alien city hidden on Earth in plain sight called Lustrum. “Our goal from the start was to create an authentic world with real characters,” series co-writer David Booher told io9. “Our hero Ben Madsen has some serious real-world problems. Even Lustrum, our completely alien city hidden on Earth, is divided into ‘Wards’ that take cues from familiar places like Shanghai and Brazil and the streets of Calcutta. No matter how crazy things get for Ben (and they get insane!), readers will always feel grounded in the roots of his character and the story.”
