The world of comics has been without giant, burly sci-fi soldiers carving bloody messes into alien hordes with their chainsaw guns for far too long since Wildstorm’s Gears of War comic came to an end in 2012. But good news for COG fans: the series is making a triumphant, gory return thanks to IDW.
io9 can exclusively reveal that one of the new comics being announced at IDW’s currently-running panel at San Diego Comic-Con is a new Gears of War ongoing series. The comic will be written by Rat Queens‘ Kurtis Wiebe (no artist has currently been announced) and be set around the events of the Gears games, which chronicle the struggles of the planet Sera as its human inhabitants find themselves under attack from a deadly species known as the Locust, requiring all the chest-high walls and hilariously over-the-top weaponry they can muster in a fight to survive.
“We are thrilled to be working with IDW Publishing to expand the Gears of War universe through comics,” Rod Fergusson, Studio Head at Gears of War developers The Coalition, said in a statement. “The rich world and characters that millions of gamers have come to cherish is in very capable hands.”Judging by the art making its debut in San Diego and on io9 below, while the series hopes to tell stories beyond those in the games, a few familiar characters could likely crop up to blast some bad guys in the new comics.
As well as the new Gears series from Wiebe, IDW will also be reprinting the original Wildstorm Gears of War comics in new collections, meaning fans unfamiliar with the past world of Gears comics can experience them anew alongside the ongoing comic. Gears of War #1 is set to hit shelves in January 2018.
