If you thought the teens with attitude from Angel Grove were the first Power Rangers, Boom Studio’s excellent ongoing comic series is about to change all that, with the revelation of the original group: A groovy team of Rangers from the swinging ’60s.

Revealed by IGN, Power Rangers #20 — by series writer Kyle Higgins and artist Daniele Di Nicuolo — will be a standalone story that introduces the real original Power Rangers, who, judging by the cover, will be involved in the Moon landing. I mean, it makes sense: After all, Rita was trapped for 10 thousand years on the moon. Maybe there was a danger of her breaking out a bit early when Neil Armstrong took his giant leap for mankind?
Although there are no images of just what the original team looks like yet, the names and roles of the original rangers have been revealed, and it’s a pretty eclectic mix that goes well beyond the high school kids we saw in the show:
- Igor — 21, male, Soviet KGB agent
- Jamie — 24, female, British singer/songwriter
- Terona — 21, male, war veteran
- Daniel — 18, male, student/protester
- Grace — 21, female, head secretary at NASA and wannabe astronaut
Different ages, different nationalities, very different walks of life (how is a KGB agent going to get on with someone who works at a US Federal agency?), it’s definitely going to be a very different take on the team. The cover seems to imply that it will still be the same costumes, however, but even if it would be a couple of years too early, the Super Sentai fan in me wouldn’t have minded Power Rangers ’69 looking a little something like these guys:
That would be a pretty cool nod to the long history that gave us Power Rangers in the first place! Power Rangers #20 hits shelves this October.
