Humble's Back With A Pretty Solid Bundle

Flame in the Flood and Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide are a couple of fun, but overlooked games. Fortunately, you can now get both for the sweet price of bugger all.

Every now and again Humble Bundle throws up a surprisingly good offer, and the latest offering fits very much into the surprising category. There's no major AAA titles in the mix, but there are a bunch of solid smaller games on offer for about the price of a wanky smoothie.

Let's start with the first tier.

Tier one: Pay $US1 or more

  • Human Fall Flat
  • Infested Planet
  • The Flame in the Flood

A pretty decent offering here for less than a Mars Bar. The Flame in the Flood and Human Fall Flat are the two games that stand out the most, although it's actually Infested Planet that has the best user rating out of all three.

Infested Planet is basically a squad RTS where you command five members against an alien horde of 100,000, which sounds like stopping your own Zerg rush. Human Fall Flat is a physics puzzler that's funnier than you'd expect, and Flame in the Flood is a survival game about voyaging along the river, foraging for supplies as you go.

Tier two: Pay more than the average ($6.11 at the time of writing)

  • Verdun
  • Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide
  • Samorost 3

Worth noting that you get the Drachenfels DLC with Vermintide, which is one of the two costliest bits of DLC for the Left 4 Dead-style shooter. The loot mechanic has been vastly improved since launch, as well, and if you're after a co-op game with mates, the second tier is worth it just for this.

Verdun is more for fans of Call of Duty 2 and the old Battlefield games. It's billed as a "realistic" multiplayer WW1 shooter, one that tries to emulate a lot of trench warfare. That might not be for everyone, but there are plenty of people who will look at this and be thrilled that it does all the things Battlefield 1 didn't.*

Samorost 3, on the other hand, is a puzzler from the makers of Machinarium and Botanicula. It looks stunning, but point and click adventures really aren't for everyone.

Tier three: Pay $US10 or more

  • American Truck Simulator

It's not Euro Truck Simulator 2 in multiplayer, but most people have that already. Needless to say, ATS is already on Steam for $US19.99. Chances are it'll be half that come the next major Steam sale, so if you don't have this game already and you're not itching to buy it, you can probably skip this tier.

So like I said, no big blockbuster games in this pack. But some good hidden gems, particularly with Vermintide. Human Fall Flat can work as a neat party game as well, if you pass the controller around. And Samorost 3 probably deserved more attention than it got at release, but with the amount of games coming out every week, that's bound to happen.

See anything that takes your fancy? If so, let us know! And if not, what games are you holding out for a discount on?

Update: Provided an a) accurate and b) more proper description of what Verdun actually is.

I thought Verdun was one of the only WW1 trench warfare games. Am I confusing it with something else

Yeah, I fucked up on that part and hit 2 instead of 1. Fixed it up, and then redid the description to add a bit more. Cheers for pointing it out.

Infested Planet is one of my favourite Tower Defense'ish games. Really solid progression system, with interesting unlocks and a campaign map that gives real choice about advancement in a kind of X-COM'ish territory-grab way. It is outstanding value for anyone who's even remotely interested in the genre.

i had nfi what i was looking at when i saw the clip on the site lol

      so ty for the description

Is it anything like Defence Grid (if you've played it)? That's the only tower defence game that has really sucked me in and I was really disappointed with it's sequel.

Nope. There's no path-building, and there's a high reliance on active abilities. It's only tower defense-ish. For like a buck, though, I highly recommend it.

You guys have been forgetting to actually link to the subject a little bit lately

If you were already thinking of tier 2, then an extra $4 for ATS is a bargain - but probably not worth it if you were getting the bundle just for that 1 game.
