Well, it’s finally happening. The Hollywood Reporter says that Stephen Daldry, the Oscar-nominated director behind Billy Elliot and The Hours, is in early talks to direct and develop a script about Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ewan McGregor, however, is not yet attached.
Disney would not offer a comment.
This has long been a film fans have been clamoring for, even though the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi between Episode III and IV have actually been explored recently in the comics and on Rebels. And though McGregor isn’t part of the movie yet, he has said time and time again it’s something he wants to do. If Lucasfilm and Daldry want him, it’s a good bet he’ll turn on that lightsaber again. Again, this is all in very early stages.
Star Wars films are on the schedule for the next three years, with The Last Jedi in December, the Han Solo movie in May 2018, and then Episode IX in May 2019. And though the CEO of Disney, Bob Iger, has said Lucasfilm was developing a standalone movie for 2020 — which most people assumed would be about Obi-Wan anyway — this is the first acknowledgement that something along those lines is really happening. BUT, to be fair, we don’t 100 per cent know it will be the next film. Common sense just dictates it is, since they are in the process of hiring a director and writer.
Update: We’ve updated with Disney’s “no comment” plus, though we think Obi-Wan will be the next standalone movie, Variety says it may not be, so we removed that from the headline.

The actions of Obi Wan have been elaborated on a lot. I thought Disney wanted to build a new universe and not make movies using existing stories? The Obi Wan/Anakin stories in the comics are canon and there’s heaps of them.
What is there left to explore in his story?
Tattooine trying to protect luke from the shadows after he dropped him off to his uncle.
Something other than he went and sat in a hut in a desert for 20 years.
Unless its him as a Padawan.
It would have to be prequel adventure (not covered in clone wars or movies) and he and Anakin were joined at the hip alot for that… or its post Order 666 but besides a confrontation in Rebels he was suppose to be hidden.
The character is so deeply developed I think its not a good fit, story groups going to have to get a crowbar to fit this load into cannon.
Well if it’s post Order 66, Bail Organa and Leia know where he is, and Rogue One seemed to imply that the rebels knew about him as well, so there’s possibilities for Ob-Wan to be recruited for some off-world adventure, or maybe the whole thing can take place on Tattooine.
If they can get Ewan, this would be great. I always loved his bits in the movies.
Oh shit!
oh…
So this whole thing is just clickbait then… Come back when you learn what “official” means.
how can they make this movie without Ewan?
they wont be making it without McGregor. he has said plenty of times he is in when they want to make it.
