Funcom’s supernatural conspiracy MMO recently got a reboot, and now it’s getting its own television show. Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil and G4C Innovation have teamed up to produce a live-action TV series based on The Secret World. Or Secret World Legends. Whichever.
Set in the modern day and revolving around a power struggle between a trio of shadowy organisations battling for control of the hidden supernatural world that only a select few can perceive, The Secret World‘s had television series written all over it since day one. Scandinavian producer Gudrun Giddings of G4C Innovation optioned the rights to create a series back in 2012.
“It is one of the most character-driven and well-developed games I know of,” said Giddings via official press release. “Hence it naturally lends itself to fantastical storylines with intriguing characters, a thrilling, and binge-worthy international TV show.”
The show has a pilot script, written by James V. Hart (Hook, Dracula, Contact) and Jake Hart. Johnny Depp, Christi Dembrowski, Sam Sarkar and Gudrun Giddings will produce, with CSI-NY’s Pam Veasey running the show.
It’s a pretty amazing TV concept, and while it can’t hope to capture the magic of those first hours in the game back in 2012, it will be cool to see all that creepy shit come to life.

I completely forgot about Secret World…did it ever go F2P?
I think it went to a single purchase model where you still have to buy the game. However it just switched to F2P with Secret World Legends. It’s sort of a re-release with a new combat system and more of a action RPG than a MMORPG.
Secret World Legends is F2P and I haven’t hit any situations that made me feel gimped by not paying for the account (yet). I should note that I was originally a founder or whatever it was called for TSW, unsure if any real benefits came over from that.
For what it’s worth I’ve been enjoying it.
I’m actually reasonably excited for a TV series, the story/intrigue was definitely the strong point for TSW and I think they could get some good storylines out of it!
So I joined up right before work this morning. First limit I saw was that I could only make 1 character, which sucks because I wanted both a gunslinger AND an assassin. (Honestly, I want a gunslinging swordsman, hopefully I can do that).
Graphics seem supppeerrrrr old, but I’ll give it a pass if it has a good story.
Yea the graphics are what they are, it’s been out a while now. I wouldn’t say they are terrible but they certainly aren’t on par with some of the modern asian MMO’s and given the lack of stylisation they haven’t aged as well as WoW or GW2 for example.
Don’t worry about different characters for different classes – you can do any “class” on one character as all you need to do is unlock/switch weapons and then put points into those skills you want. The classes at the start (assassin, warlock, etc) are just there for convenience sake to give people an easier place to start from 🙂
The only reason you would need more character slots is if you want to try out the different factions, but be warned they all follow the same quest hubs.
Yeah, since completing the tutorial, I see that I can spend Marks and get new weapons. How easily acquirable are Marks of Favor?
