This Anime-Inspired SpongeBob SquarePants Opening Is A Thing Of Beauty

SpongeBob SquarePants‘s original theme song and opening sequence are a big part of the show’s long-lasting success. They’re catchy, fun, and explain the basic premise of the show every episode while somehow managing not to become too annoying. The only thing that could make them better? An anime makeover.

Yesterday, US-based animator Narmak uploaded a video to their YouTube account meant to answer a simple question: What would a reimagined SpongeBob SquarePants credit sequence look like if it were designed by an anime-obsessed Westerner? The answer? Pretty damned good, actually. The video plays on a number of visual anime cliches such as having characters dramatically stare off-screen moments before a moving into a fluid action scene. The video’s chock full of wordless, overwrought melodrama, but it totally works given how absurd SpongeBob SquarePants has always been.

Check it out and make sure to watch until the end.
