This Week In Games: The Flood Begins

Were you enjoying the lull in game releases over the last month or so? Well, I have good (or bad, depending how big your Pile of Shame) news. It’s over. Well and truly over.

Take this week as an example. There’s the console release of Sonic Mania. StarCraft: Remastered finally launches. There’s the Nidhogg sequel. Night Trap is back. Undertale is getting a console launch, as is Conan Exiles and Tokyo 42. Strap in, it’s getting busy.

Nidhogg 2 (PS4, PC)

What is it? Fencing gone mad.
Should you care? The original is still one of the best party games, provided you’ve got two people on the same level. The sequel is changing up a lot, so I’m keen to see whether it’s just as good with mates.

Super Blood Hockey (PC)

What is it? A game about beating the shit out of other players under the guise of ice hockey.
Should you care? If you lose your hockey team could be executed by North Korea. I could get into this.

Sonic Mania (PS4, XBO, Switch)

What is it? With the PC launch delayed until the end of the month, console users get to enjoy the return of the blue blob first.
Should you care? It’s another Sonic game – chances are you already know where you stand on that.

Cities: Skylines (PS4)

What is it? SimCity as it should have been, but on consoles now.
Should you care? Depends on how much you like city builders. Hopefully Skylines can get mods on PS4 somehow.

StarCraft: Remastered (PC)

What is it? The classic RTS returns, remastered with widescreen support, new online matchmaking and ranked ladders, and more.
Should you care? If it helps convince Blizzard to remaster Warcraft 3, then you bloody well should.

Night Trap – 25th Anniversary Edition (PS4, PC)

What is it? A remake of the iconic FMV game, where the player watches over a group of teenage girls as a group of vampires chase after them.
Should you care? Grab some mates and drinks and fire this up one night. It’s the only way to properly play it.

Troll and I (Switch)

What is it? An adventure between a Nordic boy and a troll, where both work together to survive.
Should you care? It’s a little Last Guardian, but with none of the charm. Avoid.

Agents of Mayhem (PS4, PC, XBO)

What is it? The makers of Saints Row return, featuring an open-world where superheroes battle an evil organisation keen to take over the world.
Should you care? Mikey likes it so far.

Tokyo 42 (PS4)

What is it? The PS4 launch of Mode7’s open-world assassination adventure.
Should you care? It’s fun, if you can get over the frustrations with the camera. Hard as nails too, I’d add.

Conan Exiles (XBO)

What is it? The MMO with a package slider comes to Xbox One.
Should you care? An option if you really like survival and Conan the Barbarian, but there’s a lot of work to do.

Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul (PSVR)

What is it? Paranormal Activity comes to PSVR.
Should you care? Do you own PSVR? Then you should have this. Why? That’s a silly question to ask.

Observer (PC, PS4, XBO)

What is it? A cyberpunk horror game from the makers of Layers of Fear, where you hack into the minds of the insane.
Should you care? This looks real intriguing, even as a horror game. I would consider breaking my rule on horror games for this, actually, provided I was with a group of friends.

The Pillars of the Earth (PC, PS4, XBO)

What is it? A three-part episodic series about the Ken Follett novel, set in 12th century England where a small town struggles to survive.
Should you care? Watch the trailer. This could be real interesting.

Undertale (PS4, Vita)

What is it? The indie RPG hit comes to Sony platforms.
Should you care? If you haven’t played it, and you like RPGs, then yes.

Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma (PS4)

What is it? Nine people wake in an underground facility. Three passwords are needed to open the final door. You choose who lives or dies.
Should you care? The Zero Escape games have a strong fanbase for a reason. There is nothing quite like it.

You probably fall into one of two camps. Either you’re breathlessly counting down the days until then, or you’ve never played Zero Escape.”]
