New Steam Game Gives You Achievements For Speedrunning

High Hell is by no means the longest game ever, but it can be really, really short if you want it to be.

While the stylish first-person shooter should take most people a couple of hours to beat, there’s an achievement for sprinting through it in 20 minutes. There’s also one for beating a level in five seconds. Basically, if you’re a speedrunner, this game is rolling out the red carpet for you.

It’s an interesting approach to take on Steam, a platform notorious for hosting hordes of players who refuse to cough up more than 99 cents for games that won’t last them until the end of The Age Of Man. So far, though, reviews indicate that people are mostly receptive to the idea, even though the game costs $US9.99 ($13). Short, focused games rule, so this is a good thing.

The game has a number of amusing achievements, such as one whose description reads “beat Professor Meth without killing any chimps” and another that’s simply titled “BURN EVERYTHING”. At its core, though, High Hell is a first-person shooter about scalpel-like precision and the-amount-of-time-it-takes-me-to-start-crying-any-time-I-see-a-scalpel-like speed. You kick down a door and demolish everybody in a flash, or go out in an inglorious blaze yourself. I’ve only played for about 30 minutes (no achievement for me), but I like it a lot so far.
